Selena Movie Description:
The true story of Selena, a Texas-born Tejano singer who rose from cult status to performing at the Astrodome, as well as having chart-topping albums on the Latin music charts.
The film tells the story of the life of Mexican "Tejano" style singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez and the progress of her career resulting in her No. 1 US album.
Written and directed by Gregory Nava, this biopic concentrates on Selena's relationship with her family and her rise to fame, dealing only briefly with her tragic death. Abraham Quintanilla (Edward James Olmos) is a veteran musician who leads a family-based singing group, The Dinos. At a young age, he notices that his daughter Selena (played as a child by Becky Lee Meza) has a strong singing voice, and he works her into the act (her big number is a version of Over the Rainbow). However, as she grows older, Selena (played as an adult by Jennifer Lopez) wants to establish her own musical identity; while her heritage is Mexican-American, her primary language is English, and her favorite artists are American pop acts like Donna Summer. While Selena and Abraham sometimes argue about the musical direction of the group, he always respects and supports her talent, and her blend of Tejano roots music and dance-able pop rhythms soon sparks a revolution in Latin music. Selena later earns the wrath of her father when she becomes romantically involved with Chris Perez (Jon Seda), a rebellious and long-haired guitarist hired to play with the group, but when they elope and Selena convinces Abraham that their love is sincere, Chris is welcomed into the family. After a long string of successes on the Latin charts and playing to a sellout crowd at the Houston Astrodome and a crowd of 100,000 at a stadium in Monterey, Mexico, Selena begins recording her first album in English, which is expected to make her a mainstream star on the level of Whitney Houston or Gloria Estefan. Being Mexican-American myself, Selena was basically our Princess Diana. She was incredibly talented and supremely kind, But ultimately died young. She was only 23 at the time of her death.*

Unfortunately, Yolanda is supposed to be out on parole next year. Someone is going to unalive her when she gets out. I guarantee it. I'm surprised a fellow inmate has not already. I would be completely satisfied for Yolanda to remain in prison to the end of her days. No parole.

Respectfully, Abraham’s speech in the car about what it’s like to be Mexican-American is one of the most profound and relatable moments for a lot of us who weren’t raised to speak Spanish. It’s a very complex identity and can be painful when your identity as both Mexican and American is also rejected by both. Anyway, it was interesting to watch a young person who doesn’t know Selena’s story watch this movie 😊

Same! My grandparents never taught my dad or uncles because they wanted to make sure they were assimilated to America. Thus my sisters and I were never taught. I've tried learning on my own and I know some basic stuff but definitely not good at all lol
@@stuckinmyshow yes my Nana told me how they were punished in school for using Spanish (1930’s). She told me how she once almost got picked to give a speech in school because it was so good, but they let another little girl give her speech because that girl was Anglo. Out of my 4 grandparents, 3 were born here and they didn’t teach their kids Spanish, so by the time my generation came along were completely monolingual. There’s so much pain around our ancestor’s relationship with their language and culture, and it doesn’t help people like us when those who are supposed to be our people bully us over something we had no control over.
It’s the same for many Black Americans. Too black for white people and not Black enough for Africans. With an identity being stripped, sometimes it’s hard to find where you belong in America.
That is my favourite scene in the movie, because any diaspora group can relate to that monologue. Coming from a Pakistani living in Ireland.

Fun fact: that was actually Chris Perez playing the guitar during Chris' audition scene. Did you peep how Yolanda took the credit for buying her the ring when it came from money that the other ladies were going to use to get her a present? Also, the fans in the movie that were acting as fans and 1:05:11 onward, were real Selena fans.
“That’s all you got for me” after the Disco Medley ended… mind you the real disco medley is almost 8 minutes long and was the opening for that particular concert, where she performed for over an 1 hour, no breaks, no costume changes, no in-ear monitors, and dancing all the show with high heel boots. It’s exceptional.

Selena used to hold her mic very close to her mouth and was always tainted with her red lipstick, she would clean it with a little brush after every concert, but after her last concert, sadly she couldn’t clean it one last time. Now it’s on display at her museum in Corpus Christi, with the lipstick still on it.

Your reaction was so genuine. After watching your reaction to this movie I can see how the writers did get the message that this movie intended to get across. The way you felt when you saw in the movie that Selena was shot was the exact same way Selena's fans reacted to hearing the news and the sadness you felt when you found out that Selena passed away is the saw exact saddest Selena 's fans displayed back when they found out. When you began punching the chair when you found out that Selena was dead is the same emotions that many and most of Selena's fans felt back then. The fans were so sadden and out raged, truly . They were so mad at Yolanda and were actually asking for the death penalty for Yolanda. Dreaming of you was written for Chris Perez he never listened to it until after she passed he was supposed to be in the studio with her when she made that song but Abraham would keep him and her busy always so he wasn’t able to watch his wife make a masterpiece about him he ended up doing drugs for awhile then met his 2nd wife had 2 kids and then divorced he said no woman can ever compare to Selena she was his person and she was taken from him because of jealousy and anger they were literally talking about slowing down from doing music so they could start there own family and nope she was killed had Yolanda hit a little more up or down she would have made it but it got a main artery and she bled out her last words were “Lock the door! She'll shoot me again!" As the motel's manager called for an ambulance, she identified Saldívar as her shooter and the room where she was staying then said before her final breathe "Yolanda ... 158” she at least was able to tell them her murderers name also there’s a show for Selena but that one talks more about the siblings also Selena and my mom are/would be the same age and another lady was gonna play her but she passed so jlo got it instead

I'd also like to mention, Selena is one of my biggest heroes and inspirations, having motivated and inspired me to pursue my dreams and goals. I served in the US Army for 3 years (2009-2012). As I'm sure you can guess, there were several people who didn't want me to join because they'd worry and didn't want anything to happen, blah blah blah. But then again, you don't have to be in the military for something bad to happen. Selena wasn't in the military, and we all know what happened to her. 😡
