You have to remember that from the perspective of the great houses, Paul formed an army with a bunch of savages (the Fremen) and performed a military coup for the throne. If Paul had gone to the Landsraad and presented his case they may have formed a coalition with him but he went with a complete power move that bypassed any semblance of government that existed. This was basically Julius Caesar coming back with the Thirteenth Army to Rome and installing himself as Emperor removing power from the senate.

Too bad CHOAM wasn't a part of the movies because a lot of Great Houses had a huge financial stake in sticking with the emperor which makes more sense in reality. Like Octavian keeping control of Rome and in the end getting the supporters of Marcus Antonius to turn against him before the battle of Actium.

Plus, using atomics on humans was forbidden but he found a loophole by only using it to blow ip the mountain, allowing the worms to sneak in through the storm and blitz the emperor

Except Julius was a known and popular man. A lot of people welcomed him, which is why his death wasn't enough to return things to the way they were. The conspirators failed to recognize how popular he was and how the people would turn against them. While Leto was popular, Paul was but a child and he had adopted a whole new persona. So, even if people knew he was Paul Atreides, he was a complete outsider to them and a usurper to the throne.

And further to this, The emperor only maintains power above the Landsraad due to the Sardurkar, a massive chunk of which of which were wiped out in this battle. So, less of a reason to officially give Paul the position. Denying official endorsement may delay/prevent his ability to command and deploy the remaining Sardurkar against the Landsraad.

That's why in the movie's version of events, marrying Irulan doesn't make any sense. If you're going to impose yourself as the new ruler by the means of power, you don't need any political marriage to legitimize your ascendency. He could stick with Chani and avoid further drama. That's what happens when your try to deviate too much from the book plot, things stop making sense.

Paul remembers the lesson Gurney taught him while sparring in Dune Part 1: "I have you", "Aye, but look down my lord, you would have joined me in death". He directed Feyd's blade into his own shoulder to distract him for an instant and deliver the killing blow under Feyd's ribs with the forgotten knife.

I don't know how to explain it properly, but I really wish they'd done a better job of visually communicating that concept. Like, after you have a think about it, it's obvious, but the nature of how it played out on screen felt confusing. It didn't have to be an exaggerated affair or anything, but maybe a wide shot with a nod to the choreography from part 1.
A wide shot might have been less intimate/intense than the tight framing we were shown, so who knows. It just took me out of the moment slightly when I saw it live, but maybe I'm alone on that.

She decided to have a son for love to Duke Leto, and she decided to train him in the ways of the Benne Gesserit against their will.

Nice reaction - esp when Sam uses the Voice at 1:00:00 - she should do this again: "Watch our videos!" lol - I think it was a powerful choice showing this film so much from Chani's POV; is she the true hero here, as w Samwise in ROTK? She wants freedom for her ppl, and is fully on board w grooming Paul as a leader - but blind obedience to a cult is NOT what she signed on for - what do Bene Gesserit want? I don't think it's so scattered - Jessica was supposed to have Atriedes daughter to then wed to Harkonnen
    - I think they've been cultivating a super-powered Plato-style philosopher-king - combining omniscience of past-future collective vision w the omnipotence of political power merging these Houses on the Throne - with of course the Bene Gesserit behind him, pulling his strings, or maybe merging w his vision? Their problem w Atriedes wasn't their power, it was the independent spirit of the Atriedes - this is what's underlined here, how Feyd is easier to control - as a prospect, they'd see Paul as too much of a loose cannon now
One small disagreement I have w this film is how omnipotent they make the Bene Gesserit - in the books, they're very powerful, and the ones w their eye most focused on the Long Game of Humanity - but IMO the books also have a fuller sense of multiple players in the game, with various agendas, and more of a balance of power among them - so I thought this view of Bene Gesserit was a bit reductive - they have their vast web of power, and they're holding many of the strings, but they're also vying w other puppeteers
    - another area where I had mixed feelings was the emphasis on Feyd as "psychotic", as some kind of anomaly - in the TV miniseries, in contrast, we see the Harkonnens more as just representing this political culture in general, and we see Irulan is actually much more comfortable around Feyd than she is w someone like Paul - Paul being another princeling in the making, raised as one of them, who instead went "native" - I like this because IMO the more important fault line here is between Fremen vs the Ruling Class
The treatment of Chani is different from the book (I adore her love story w Paul, and I think the buildup to their first kiss is one of the best I've ever seen in a film) - and I think the film does a better job w her; she's far more independent here, in a way that throws clarity in a larger sense on what the Fremen represent, and on the implications of what Paul is becoming - the film does a better job of clarifying this aspect of what Herbert was warning us about - we're in unknown territory, but I hope she evolves into Paul's adversary

At the beginning, out in the desert, the sky is orange, and we can see a partial lunar eclipse. Arrakis has two moons. One of the "making" of features on the Blu-ray details that they did have a partial Lunar eclipse, here on Earth, filming in Jordan, or United Arab Emirates, both used for the desert filming for Arrakis. Much of the rock-locations, I believe are in Jordan. It's a now famous region, where "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Martian" and "SW 9: Rise of Skywalker" filmed too. At least that's what I understood after reading, don't give me spoilers in the replies please 😂❤

    - 36:57 - Yes, Jessica is the daughter of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. However, it gets weirder than that! In the later books written by Frank Herbert's son, Brian, we learn that Jessica's mother was Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, who tested Paul with the box. In the book, the Baron is gay, VERY gay, and psychotic like Feyd. In fact, he is extremely vain about his looks as well. Mohiam is sent to secure the bloodline. However, in the attempt the Baron has some problems and ends up sexually assaulting Mohiam. Unfortunately, the embryo was nonviable, and Mohiam had to go back and resecure the bloodline. When she does, she gives the Baron a nasty surprise. As the Bene Gesserit are trained to have the most minute control over every facet of their biology, which is how they can drink the Water of Life and survive, Mohiam uses this ability to create a very special STD for the Baron, which is why is is so grotesquely obese and has to use an anti-gravity suspensor to move around. His bones are so brittle they cannot support his weight.
    - Chani is different in the novel. She fully supports and believes in Paul as LIsan al Gaib and Mahdi, and continues to love him. The also cut a tremendously tragic part of the story. From when Paul and Jessica escape into the desert to Paul defeating the Emperor, about two years pass give or take. Paul's sister Alia is born with all of the knowledge of a full Reverend Mother. And Chani and Paul have a son named Leto II. Unfortunately, the young Leto is killed during a Sardaukar raid. When Paul overthrows the Emperor takes Princess Irulan as his bride, Chani knew. She didn't like it, but understood it. The final paragraph of the novel is Jessica comforting Chani, helping her realize that Irulan may have Paul's name...but only that. Irulan will have no children, no softness, no affection, nothing. Jessica says, "...we who bear the title of concubine, history will call us wives."
Paul is not a hero. He is, at best, an antihero and, at worst, a villain in a story filled with villains. Frank Herbert deliberately wrote the Dune novels to explain the dangers of charismatic leaders.

Small detail I think some people miss is that after Paul declares that he wants revenge and wants to use the prophecy to manipulate the fremen for that goal. He immediately after gets a vision of people worshiping a shrine of his father. It's a call back to the first film where Paul had the vision in the tent where he saw people killing and dying I. His name and worshipping a shrine for his father. So I believe in this moment Paul has a change of heart, wishing (at this point in the film) to avoid this outcome. So that's why I think in the first parts of the movie he doesn't like his mother converting and manipulating the fremen, even though in the beginning he said he would do as much.

    • @donny1960
      @donny1960 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I agree. Paul at the end of the book and movie is a reluctant warrior. He knows what letting the Fremen lose will do to the Empire. But is resigned to it as the only way to continue the Human Race. He sees that the Bene Gesserit put mankind on a path to obliteration when they created "The One". Hard decisions had to be made to save everyone. It eventually fell to Paul's son to undo the Bene Gesserit mistake. Dune is very complicated. It is not just the "good guys" against the "bad guys". We all can be both at a given time.

In the books, Paul uses it to shatter Feyd Rautha's body after he kills him, and it cracked the building foundation.
Chani in the books fully supported Paul without question, and already knew he would be marrying Princess Irulan. She accepted it. The movie version helps accentuate Frank Herbert's vision, though. He never liked any leader to be loved so much they became a religious figure. He had similar politics in real life.
You mentioned how Paul needed Chani to even have his power, but that was never the case in the original story. He was always more than competent in all ways without anyone's, let alone Chani's, help. One can assume that it has a lot to do with current political climate in the real world, as feminism does not like that kind of clear male dominance. But the books, and original movies, made it clear that the Kwisatz Haderach could only be a man, because only a man can handle the full access to all his ancestors (male and female), and fully see all possible futures. The Bene Gesserit Witches knew it was coming, as they saw the future and made the breeding program that would ensure that it happened. They just wanted to make certain they could control whatever man ended up with it. Paul and Feyd were the final products of their breeding program, but they disliked that Paul would resist their control. It should be noted that they had predicted that the generation after Paul/Feyd would probably be the Kwisatz Haderach, but it came a generation early in Paul. There's a lot more to that, but it could reveal spoilers for the future movie.
For the Bene Gesserit Witches, control is all that matters. They always knew they (women) would never have the full power, so they resolved to control that power.
Also, the Bene Gesserit planted the cultish prophecies throughout the empire, but they knew that the Kwisatz Haderach would actually fulfill those prophecies. So, technically, those predictions were not lies at all. And that would ensure that they would be able to control and manipulate the Fremen (and many others).
Finally, in the books, the great houses conceded to Paul and accepted his reign. They just turned around and started waging secret wars against him by starting terrorist groups and sending assassins after them. I'm curious how they will resolve Chani's issues in the next movie, and how they will deal with the holy war.

100% false about "sound" weapon. That was the 1980's movie. It took liberties. There was no "sound" weapon that shattered rock and bodies in the book. The "Weirding way" was the Bene Gesserit way of battle. Super-fast reflexes. Complete control of muscles. Not a "weirding module" or a Paul shout. If you want a very literal version of Dune. Watch the Sci-fi network miniseries. It was very true to the books.

@@donny1960 I never even mentioned the modules, just that he used his voice to shatter the foundation. And I watched the Sci-Fi network's mini-series. I liked it. It was far more literal, but a lot of people still hated it.

@@dustinwilson4815 Well people hate everything now and then. The Miniseries was a great telling of the Dune story. If you are a fan of Dune. What is not to like? As for the "voice" to shatter rock. The last scene had Paul do it without the "modules". A character says, " We will soon not need the modules". But still, all that was tacked on to the story. None of it was in the book.
