I have a Honda with DCT (and I've driven many bikes) and I Love the DCT system! And I have a feeling that Honda will have the best "automatic system" for a long time. It is just sooo smooth and shifts within milliseconds, and you can be in automatic mode but still override it with the paddle shifts at anytime, or just drive it in fully manual all the time👌🏼
After owning a DCT AT for a while I can't imagine buying a manual bike ever again. The DCT is so great in the city and twisties or when I have to lower my legs in slow gnarly terrain. Also, so comfortable for a pillion rider too because the shifts are basically instantaneous so none of that head bumping sometimes haha.
Do you ever use manual mode or is auto that good you don’t bother? Very much considering an AT so be good to hear from an owner 👍🏻
@@timmo3351 No worries. Played around with the manual in the beginning but I didn't get any value from it over auto. What I do use a lot is flicking between normal and sport mode. You can do this easily on the fly and it is really helpful for different conditions. Like normal open road driving or in the city normal auto is good. You hit some twisties you flick to sport so it holds the gears longer and you get a bit more engine braking. Same in some thick sand or something just quickly flick to sport.
Now I will add I am not a red bull rider so maybe if you are Chris Birch you might prefer manual.
I'd wait a couple of years until any reliability issues are ironed out.
It's KTM. It'll always be unreliable...
@@nicomonkeyboy On my 2nd KTM, no issues. I know about the 790/890 cam issues but that is being addressed as I understand it. Maybe they can improve their customer service though.
@@nicomonkeyboy Stop spreading misinformation just because you cannot afford anything else than a suzuki. KTM's nowdays are even more reliable than new kawasakis..
@@sufeeb. My 14 1190 adv has been good too. No major engine suspension or transmission failures.
i think i saw the successor for my 2020 SAS in this video :)
Feels like KTM just went to Rekluse, especially given how many models are already supported by them. Work with what you know ? As Canadian, the use of centrifugal clutch makes my head hurt, as my bike suddenly behaves like a snowmobile, and it is both good and weird. Since the 390 family can be up-fitted, I might try it for longer then just the few times I borrowed friend's bikes so equipped.
I am not worried about a few kilo more here or there and love the idea of having the OPTION to go fully automatic. It will come down to cost as it always does, reliability (have to wait a few years here) and which system feels the best to use.
Banging up and down the gearbox is a big part of riding for me. Just like a love a manual gearbox in my car. I'll give it a try on a demo but I think I'll want to stay with the standard shifter style.
It will be interesting to see how it works compared to others.
Great video
They all used to say dct is bullshit but now everyone tries to copy . Honda is the leader....
Thanks for sharing your trip.
It will provide you great memories in future years.
I am looking forward to testride the KTM in 2025 😊 The old 50ccm moped from my father from the 60s has a centrifugal clutch and it worked OK without electronics.
Mashed Gearbox and Cheesy Cams anyone ….yum😊
Great stuff . I'm excited about the AMT. I had the same experience with a Recluse on a Demo MV Dragster . Not very smooth. Like your Veloce might have been in need of service as mine had zero rear brakes.
Still believe I would prefer any one of the systems that also has a foot shifter.
honda offers a foot shifter on their dct
@@Alex-if3srnot all they don’t. No-one was buying the footshifter so they stopped offering it.
@@jimporter well yes not all but definitely on the Africa Twin. I think the biggest issue is the price. It's over £300 for a shifter. Luckily my bike came with one
@@Alex-if3sr also available for the Goldwing. I think it is one place Honda made a big mistake by overpricing it.
actually the new ktm - whatever engine it eill have - looks bloody cool. and i guess the kronreif and trunkenpoltz crew just had to check in with their grandfathers to get some hints on the centrifugal clutch ;-)
This looks a lot like the ShiftFX system from 2016. Is it a co-developed project?
So they put on a Rekluse?
So basically it’s a rekluse centrifugal clutch? Same operating behavior?
good grief they can't get their normal bikes right let alone going auto !
No confidence in the orange team anymore.
Honda e-clutch is the best option!
Automatic mode will probably be only available as a monthly subscription :/
😂😂😂
Do you mean a free trial?
I m wondering whats R model looks like?
Centrifugal clutch have been around since the Super Cub basically, maybe this will mean less electronics to go wrong? Too early to tell though.
A scooter for people that don't want to be seen in a scooter. Its like modern crossovers prentending to not be minivans when push comes to shove.
I get why they want to throw these new systems on bigger bikes and more expensive bikes, it helps to offset the cost.. but to me these systems would be far more successful on smaller, more beginner friendly bikes where a new rider can make use of the automatic features while learning manual shifting or just decide they like the automatic and stick with it... people who ride most of the bikes these will be on are already experienced riders that can ride manual so it is just a kind of luxury feature that is purely for convenience or laziness or however you want to call it.
why learn buttons and modes - be distracted when I have a good foot? my 2011 XR650L shifts without clutch like butter anyways
Exactly!! If you ride a dirt bike you know this. Almost never use the clutch when up-shifting. Just a slight drop in throttle and it goes in easy and quick. I do this on my street bikes all the time. (FTR 1200 no less) With a little practice it is "like butter".
Isn't centrifugal clutch the same as in mopeds and scooters?
Yes and no. Honda Wave and Cub, along with similar offerings from Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, etcetera, use a centrifugal clutch, a one-way clutch, and a conventional clutch, to achieve clutch less operation. Scooters typically utilise a belt drive CVT transmission.
Asis slipeclutch ,auto bliper up and down is more fun
My first minibike had a centrifugal clutch, but it always started with the kick. I don't know if I could have bump started it.
Thieves can overcome a steering lock easily? A locking pawl might need cybersecurity.
It won’t make the slightest bit of difference to security, they’ll simply stick the angle grinder they used on the lock, through the chain as well. It’ll roll all day long then
How does it go with 0-100kmh runs? What if you want to put 5000 rpms on and feed the clutch in as fast as possible? Can it do burn outs? Coming to motogp soon? I like my clutch and quick shifter. I'm sure this system has it uses but I won't be buying until I'm ready for a scooter. PS I'm 66 and still ride sports.
Riding a motorcycle involves both hands, feet, eyes, and ears, all working in synchronisation. Taking away a function is, in my opinion, a distraction more than an asset. For the same reason, I personally have a disdain for vehicles with automatic transmissions.
It came from mv agusta to KTM bikes called scs
6:45 Thats not true. With the KTM AMT you can either shift through the gears with the buttons on the handlebar or use the dummy shifter with your left foot.
Automatic - I'd like that
Ktm
Bought a 1290 sas 2023 , never going to buy KTM ever again, abs pump issue causing panic brake randomly, started to have coolant lost 250ml in 4 days and counting , paint peeling everywhere on the clutch bracket and reservoir , battery drain issue , between 50-80km the steering will wobble uncontrollably , if you let go and will also go right instead of straight. KTM dealer said everything was "normal" . F them , i traded it and never looking back , lost thousands but that was better then keeping it. Dangerous bike. Believe everything you see in forums about KTM , it’s not exaggerated. Extremely unreliable!
Is it carved from Chinesium?
😂
I would buy it myself tomorrow if there were motorcycles that I want to have an automatic, and it's the same for cars, nobody wanted an automatic at the beginning and now 95% drive an automatic
I fear it would take away some of the fun of a MC. However, if it gets more people into Biking, the better the chance of your brand staying in business.
7:50 what is that bike?
I think all of these auto transmissions are designed to recruit more riders.... some that might have a fear for the complexity of riding a traditional bike.
Yes, all that complexity of pulling in a lever and nudging the shifter into gear. Some people should just stay on scooters.
@@NicholasNormile Cope and seethe.
Seriously? The only positive reason for the AMT to exist is for impaired riders who can't shift with their foot. Other than that, manually operating a traditional bike is down right easy as fuck. Sure they can fail a few times, stall a few times but in the end: it ain't rocket science, just remember the basic operation of the clutch and the rest is practice, practice, practice. Giving newbies a bike with too much electronic will dull their skill
@@NicholasNormile I can see both sides of the argument. While we experienced riders kind of scoff at the idea, the manufacturers need fresh blood to buy their bikes. This also means that they can make even more profit if they can sell auto transmissions on top of an already pricey new bike. Look how so many cars are only sold with auto transmissions now. It’s all about money.
@@phammanh2689 exactly, quickshifters have already substantially reduced necessary clutch use. If it's too much work to pull in a lever to go into first then you probably shouldn't be riding unless you physically cannot operate a clutch or shifter.
Why are we trying to turn motorcycles into scooters?
I dont get it.
Why not? Scooters are hella fun
Cope and seethe.
@@SimonRiley752 we get it, using a clutch is just too intimidating for you
Because you don’t understand the future of EU law.
@@NicholasNormile Is that why you use a quickshifter Nicholas?
After this, Triumph Tiger 900 and 1200 may or will get AMT in the next gen.
Just keep shifting, it’s not hard with today’s bikes ffs…it’s not like the Neanderthal hand required on a Laverda Jota.
if ktm can make scooter, AMT more power for KTM. 250cc scooter AMT, perrrrr❤❤❤
It feels like KTM is about to go under with their plummeting stock value and massive cutbacks
I would not be surprised if all of this new expenditure will only drag them deeper into the abyss 😮😮
KTM need to do a reset . Put their hand up and say sorry , they’ll pause all new designs and make their existing models reliable. It’s the only way people will trust them with hard earned cash .
@@nickclarkuk absolutely!
If you still have access to the clutch, then I'd prefer this system over the dct or other direct auto systems.
Having a clutch is vital. Accidental whisky throttle, a clutch can save your life.
I still wouldn't want an auto motorcycle. But I think it's good for people who have disabilities with their left hand, or left foot for that matter. It opens the market for more people.
But... honda discontinued the manual honda rebel 1100 for 2025. To me that was a stupid decision. Are they gonna do this to the Africa twin in the future? Hopefully not, and hopefully that doesn't become a trend.
More things that can brake and you will need to service and pay to manufactures
They (ktm) reversed the shift buttons .. why!!!???
I'm not too sure if this is really necessary... I mean yes there will be an odd Karen here or there or an old "biker" who can not ride a normal bike with clutch so they will sing songs about automatic systems. With the quick shifter on my 1290SAS I only need to use the clatch when pulling away I can literally ride without the clutch for the rest of the way if I wanted to. Anyway, this AMT makes more sense than the DCT on Shonda bikes, adding another 20kg weight to an already underpowered big bike is just stupid. Riding a motorcycle is engaging and part of that fun is dropping two geats before the bend ans being in control. :)
I thought KTM won't honor the warranty on the 790 and 890 camshafts that meltdown after a few thousand Km and is going broke? But now were just going to go on a trip up Denial and pretend everything's fine and this new AMT is wonderful. WTF?
I’m only interested in the Honda models for 2025
wait so they out a Rekluse on and atomated the shiting.
When I see a KTM I think this is one motorcycle brand I would never buy.
not everyone can have good taste.
@@jls.mp4 Go ahead and taste those repair costs.
Oh great...let's hope it's better than their camshafts and switches.
Dct has 2 clutches , here all stress onto 1 plate , means shorter life, EU bikes choose direction to empty pockets and forgotten quality)) so I ll stick with Honda, Japan is faraway but yet so close 😉 😀
India needs budget 200 300cc automatic bikes
Honda dct bikes are too expensive for everyone
there wont be any, cause if there is any, the price is gonna be high and no one gonna buy it. If you want something for lazy riding, buy a scooter
CVT is still going to be more feasible for budget bikes. 300cc-ish maxi scooters like the Honda Forza or Yamaha XMAX are pretty popular.
And the world went... meh
Disappointed with KTM, it's basically a Rekluse clutch with don't have the best reputation, in terms of user experience. I think Yamaha and BMW got the best solution, not full on DCT and not basic as a mechanical clutch or the e-clutch, which are stop-gap solutions.
Thompson Brian Garcia Mark Jones Frank
Automatic motorcycles are the future get used to it. First automatics, then next step hybrid or electrify. You can be stubborn and reject change, or just be open minded and try it out. People used to hate automatics in cars as well, now majority of people prefer an automatic gearbox in cars.
In the US, most of the world still uses standard transmissions on cars.
A motorcycle with an auto is for people who dont actually like riding. Get a car.
@@themok3rify I agree but cheap bikes 300cc don't have automatic transmission right now
Hopefully in future
Dream on. Electric cars are already failing, massively. With present technology electric cars and energy production outside of nuclear and coal is just a waste of money, resources and nature.
@@constantinosschinas4503 Electric cars are failing? Is that why Tesla had the top selling car in the world in 2023? Is that why millions of people are buying Teslas? Is that why every supercar manufacturer is putting a battery in their cars?

This AMT trend is a kind of shit for existing clutch user. I know this trend they want cater for new "political generation rider" or some one never ride a manual gearbox. But the truth is this trend are totally lame for 2 wheel's rider
