In my experience, Torque converter is the best gearbox it doesn't have the rubber band effect of CVT(great on highways) and doesn't have the jerkiness of Dct on slower speeds. Also gives mechanical orgasm which the cvt doesn't have.

Very nice session, though I completely disagree with your views on IMT. I own a seltos diesel IMT model & am proud of my choice. Its ideal for Indians & the reasons are below
    1) Smooth transmission & no jerks unlike a manual or AMT
    2) Mileage is quite good even in Bangalore traffic
    3) It's fun to drive on highways as overtakes are quick..no lags
    4) Most importantly, your left leg will Thank you !!

I don’t think the IMT deserves the hatred it gets. I drive a Sonet IMT and for me it’s the perfect blend of having the clutch free comfort of an automatic and fun of gear slotting that comes for a petrol head.

e-CVT is actually a motor-generator combo. The engine is linked to a generator and the power generated is given to the motor via power electronics. Absolutely reliable combo.

I really appreciate these podcasts. Many a time these episodes take back to the memory lane and makes us feel nostalgic.. I would suggest AI Team to include real world mileage / Power consumption of vehicles in their vehicle test drives/ tests and also the cost of ownership i.e. from the point of view of service cost etc. (Because these days a vehicle is not a vehicle but a bundle of product and service offered) of each model so reviewed . This will set you and your reviews apart

CVT is definitely better than AMT as long as it is not made by Nissan, or Honda. Toyota's CVT is bomb sure, very reliable and well made. They use them in their lexus too. Between my wife's Toyota Auris cvt and my Mazda CX5 torque converter, I notice no difference while driving, they both are smooth and totally disappear in the background of driving.

I'm planning to buy next Honda Amaze (launching Jan 2025) with CVT, hence need your suggestion.

I came to know only today that M800 At came before the Zen. Infact it was only a few weeks earlier someone sent me a reel of an 800 AT, I never knew one existed. And the whole needing of a permit to buy an AT is also new to me. I remember back in 93-94, a lady in Madikeri used to drive a yellow AT Zen. I obviously didn't know head or tail about transmission back then. But I remember the gear stick was different than most car. I just checked with my dad and he did confirm that the lady infact had a physical disability. And by what you said, she probably needed that permit because this was way before 97.

This podcast was mostly 4-wheeler focused, and missed out some notable 2-wheeler milestones.
    1. Scooters used to primarily be geared till the 90s. It was the Kinetic Honda and majorly the Activa that wiped out geared scooters from our market. It was the CVT transmission that played a major role there.
    2. In 2009-10, TVS introduced the Jive bike with cluthless manual. Don't know why, but this model failed in the market.
    3. Honda uses the DCT gearbox in Goldwing and Africa Twin, as well in other models like the NX750.
    4. Most recently the Yamaha announced that the MT-09 would feature the AMT system.

  • @antonypaul6291

AMT is an under appreciated gearbox. Its gets the job done. It feels closes to deriving an MT. The shift points can be a roll of the dice sometimes and shift times can be higher in lower gears. But it gives the feeling of fixed gear ratios with minimal slip, unlike a torque converter(newer ones are better) or CVT. There is a lot of fun to be had in an AMT when driven hard.

    My simple method is
Fix a budget..with Flexi and then
    Test ride and buy
    Based on needs
    For our huge extended family
    It always boils down to
Merc Bmw toyo honda Kia hyundai
Sometimes it's not a fun car but then it brings comfort suspension or practicality which a beefier performance car can't slot in.
Engine performance and control transfered to the steering and or suspension ride
    Gets the priority
No one buys a car for a specific gear box

budget oriented customer - the thing that concern me regarding the automatic transmission is its longevity, and its repair cost.
Usually in India there is nothing called repair of automatic transmission especially that of CVT, currently the price for replacement of transmission is approximately 4 to 5 lakh. Though during purchase automatic transmission costs nearly 1 to 1.5 lakh over manual.

    • @Raj-g4l8t
      @Raj-g4l8t 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Irahhtan, OMG! So what you mean is that CVT rarely fails but when it does fail, the repair cost is exorbitant ?
But I think AMT can also fail in unfortunate cases and that also costs tens of thousands to repair, if not lakhs.
In my case I'm planning to buy between upcoming Maruti Dzire AMT (3 cylinder engine) versus upcoming Honda Amaze CVT (4 cylinder engine). Which one would you suggest ?

Considering our City traffic conditions I think iMT should be the 1st choice over MT. Best of both manual gear shift without pressing the clutch.
Followed by CVT, TC, DCT & lastly the unreliable & most expensive DSG.
You just cannot trust the DSG from VW-Skoda at least in our Indian hot constitutions.
Hats off to Hyundai & Kia for offering all options.

I love the manual transmission. It gives you much better feel and is far more engaging. I think ant auto enthusiasts would. But the current traffic conditions make it really difficult for onw to drive. More so if you have a big diesel engine you had it. The worst part is that the clutch progressively becomes harder as you log on kilometers in your odometer. What I would like to have is a power clutch. Could be similar to power brakes or power steering. Such that there is some boost to to your effort is available and the clutch remains as light as a new car. Someone need to work on this option too. 😊

    Fantastic podcast! 👏
This is the kind of highly interesting stuff 👌 I've come to expect from an ACI ❤ podcast (and NOT some celebrity interview - the glamour press can keep that for themselves!)
The future of automatics is indeed the single speed reduction gear of EVs 💯, but my personal favourite is the dual-clutch transmission.
However, all automatics are becoming more evolved & better suited for Indian driving conditions with every new launch.
AMTs & CVTs are the two most disliked autoboxes, but even they are superbly executed & calibrated in the Exter & Creta respectively (both get paddle shifters as well) 👍, for instance.
IMTs do have a place in India, as they are a very good inexpensive option for diesel engines (whose clutches are either HARD to begin with, or become progressively HARDER with age).

People have to understand that torque converter, dual clutch, AMT(single clutch), imt have gear and pinion gear box , torque convertor has fluid coupling and in dual clutch it has 2 clutch as coupling , while in cvt , it does not have gear box, only 2 cones and a belt with planetary gear box for reverse gear, making no loss in transmission energy to wheel as they are always engaged, while in dct , odd and even gears, one release and other engages with 2 sets of gears. Cvt with torque converter is good choice

From my experience Torque converter and CVT are the best auto gearboxes. DCT/DSG as is, is not reliable, and when put in Indias start-stop traffic is more problematic.. They are not meant to be used in our conditions. AMT is fine for short city uses, but again, it is not built for extensive usage.
