    Chaos was SO close to beating Cassius for the honor of performing the first Successful Self Righting in Robot Wars.

      @SonOfFurzehatt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      George Francis later admitted in an interview that he forgot to fit a tiny, plastic lug onto the back of Chaos designed to help it roll back onto its feet. No wonder he looks so despondent.

      If he had, Chaos could have beaten Mace and completely changed the result of the wars. They would have likely passed the Gauntlet and taken out Panic Attack, easily got a decent Pinball score and because they were in the same semi-final as Mortis (who basically gave up in the arena stage of that semi) would likely have qualified for the grand final. From then it would have probably beaten Killertron in the first round of the Grand Final, leaving a Chaos vs. Cassius fight for the title.
      But instead, we're in the timeline where Mace won and Panic Attack took the title, all because of a few missing bits.

    Wow, those walls looked really flimsy if they could be moved by a robot crashing into them (in later wars robots like Tornado would often bash robots into the wall without the wall moving at all)

    Craig makes such a big difference, it goes from laughing at the contestants for being rubbish to bigging them up, and the the whole show up.
    Little things like the ending lines - not sure if him or show writers but either way, changes the tone so much.

    House robots spoil every battle

      crimson bolt I agree. That is one thing I like about Battlebots. The hazards are a fixture in the playing field instead of being random. The house robots were the sole decider in some of these fights. Chaos should have been a knockout, and they revived him. It reminds me of the fight in season 1 where the house robots revived Bodyhammer off the grid. He actually went on to win the fight, and his opponent was royally screwed.

      +Steven Johnson Definitely in the early series the house robots had too much interference. Series 3 was better once they reduced their patrol zones to just the corners rather than the entire perimeter, and by 5 they generally bnehaved themselves a lot more and let battles play out more naturally (most of the time).

    What Chaos learned: Don't make robots with 2 wheels and large enough back ends to rest on. A design like that is just asking to be flipped.

  • @Texodus
    @Texodus 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Many had the idea, but it was so hard to make a flipper strong enough to self-right a robot of about 80 kilograms in the year 1998, when technology was very different.

  • @CrowwreakStevenson
    @CrowwreakStevenson 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They probably developed it together, Team Cassius and Team Chaos were best friends
    interestingly, Chaos 1 had a roll cage that they forgot to attatch that would have righted it correctly

  • @Texodus
    @Texodus 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm talking about their original, first appearance builds. Wheelosaurus didn't have a motorised weapon in Series 2, which was its first appearance. For example, Fire Storm (Series 3) had a rear spike, but it didn't in future wars. Atomic (S4) used to be made of aluminium that was too thin for Sir Killalot to grab properly.

  • @Texodus
    @Texodus 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    They did want the spike, but in Series 4 they wanted a bigger flipper. To keep in the weight limit, the spike was removed and the armour was made level with where the spike's hole was, then welded over. They were still over the weight limits in Series 4, but that was fixed. It took them a while to decide what to do for it when they were 1 kilogram over the weight limit in Series 7, however.

    actually the origanal axle-bot was The Master. It even had the electrics in the wheels, and was competing almost from the start of the sport.

    Whilst it may be no Chaos 2, you can really tell just how far ahead George Francis was in terms of damage and control by this point. Whilst Robot the Bruce was magnificently driven, it was Chaos and its battle with Dead Metal there which really showed the later success Chaos 2 were to have.

    3 easy judges decisions there, Leighviathon team must've been gutted they lost the heat semifinal after a successful trial again, Wheelosaurus had slick vintage design but was weak in battle. Mace won here and square but Chaos failing to self-right would give George a bright idea how to improve his robot for the 2nd.

  • @Texodus
    @Texodus 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Shockfactor22 No, I meant that Wheelosaurus is the original axle-bot. Stinger is the first full body axe.

  • @Texodus

    With George and Mick putting their feet up before the heat final, surely they could have used that spare time to attach the plastic ears on the back of Chaos to aid them for any possible self-righting.

  • @MarconyAnchovy
    @MarconyAnchovy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder how it would have turned out if Wheelosawus had thought to use the spinning fast on the spot tactic used in later wars by similar bots such as Stinger. It might have been one of the few bots in the early series capable of doing real damage in it's own right.

  • @RacingStripeAV

    That was almost a successful srimech from Chaos 1 there (7:05).

  • @gregoryatkin1509

    Interesting how the way that Chaos got knocked out is the way that Gemini got knocked out rather a lot. Chaos is a good design, but I'm very surprised that Team Mace didn't take that into consideration.

  • @TheStrongestBaka

    7:03 >tfw no srimech

    • @bojackhorseman5367
      @bojackhorseman5367 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      chaos actually did have a srimech, but it failed to work because they forgot to attach some rounded pieces of plexiglass to the back which allowed it to roll over rather than getting stuck on its back. I think the robot actually did have these pieces attached while the team were being interviewed in the pits beforehand, but for whatever reason, they took them off and forgot that they had to re-attach them.

    • @carucath97

  • @Texodus

    Stinger stole Wheelosaurus' idea.

  • @ArcaneAzmadi
    @ArcaneAzmadi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Well it was hardly Chaos 2, but be fair- this is barely Robot Wars at this stage. We ALMOST saw the first srimech here, but Chaos lacked the power and the right shape to flip itself upright again. Close, but no cigar. Still, that was the closest thing we've had to a legitimately great battle so far in Robot Wars.

    • @asdfghyter
      @asdfghyter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They had apparently forgotten to add a pair of rounded plastic plates to the back that was needed to make their srimech work. :/

    Sorry for being picky, but Craig Charles described the Victorian pram wheels as "18th Century", but the Victorian era was nearly all in the 19th Century

    Sorry, I'm just talking about BBC Robot Wars Series 2, not the show BBC Robot Wars is based on. The Master did do something all BBC RW competitors didn't do; they made an axle-bot with a motorised weapon. Stinger is/was a hitter and Wheelosaurus intended to spin around. Wheelosaurus looked so good, it's terrible that the ones with all the hard work put in lose in simple ways. Mortis may have looked good, but the robot itself was absolutely rubbish. It was too good to be true, in my opinion. :/
