hearing the announcement of "The Reigning Champion: ROAD BLOCK!" and watching that iconic lump of a thing exit the smoke gives me a warm glow in my heart. Robots come and go, champions rise and fall, but that robot will always have a special place in my heart and my memories. It was also the first robot you EVER saw on Robot Wars too; competitor 1, heat 1. I actually knew that from memory too, Road Block was always my favorite and I was so pleased when it won, even though there were better robots, the one I backed had won the first series. Welcome home childhood. :D
This was the first episode of Robot Wars I ever saw. It was 2000 and was being broadcast on PBS in the U.S. I was seven and my dad had me stay up late so that I could watch this. I rooted for Roadblock all the way through. Eleven years later and now I'm a mechanical engineering major in college. I owe it to this show for helping me get into engineering.
Nice heat! Roadblock: Series 1 champion Onslaught: in the Annihilator final alongside with razer Killerhurz: came back later with Terrorhurz and is now one of the best bots still active Nemesis: Made Diotoir and gaind succes ROCS: came back with a new bot 4 series later an fought in the "crusher crunsh up" special Limped: the team came back later with 13 black
Onslaught was runner up to Razer in the 4th wars southern annihilator. Father Alan Wood was part of the Tough As Nails team in the 2nd Dutch wars which fought in heat 4/5. He lost to Scraptosaur in round 1 when he died in the arena.
I remember watching this heat and was so shocked Roadblock & Nemesis were drawn together again! I loved both, always good in the gauntlet. "I want to know have women been throwing themselves at you now? I don't wanna know about CVs!" Oh Philippa xD as someone from Cornwall most of us don't follow what's on and what's happening much but at least the reigning champions from Bodmin got more recognized.
I loved the design for Onslaught. Such a sleek looking thing. Shame it didn't have much power. Also loved Killerhurtz. Another great design and a lovely looking robot. Always will have a soft spot for Roadblock though. Proof you dont need a ground breaking design to see success. Simplicity is the key. Superb robot.
At the time we always laughed at nemesis for catching fire, we were so busy doing that we completely failed to notice that it still completed the course and through the trial as well if I remember rightly. They were actually one of the better robots in there and yet they will always be remembered as a joke, it's a shame in many ways.
Team Nemesis were incredibly good engineers, and good sports too - they were known for consistently helping other teams with repairs, and won a sportsmanship award three times for it
Wait, why the hell is Nemesis placed in the same heat as Roadblock, when Roadblock are the ones who knocked them out of the 1st Wars...? R.O.C.S' front lift can raise 75kg? What the hell use is that in an arena full of 80kg robots?! Ah, the Sentinel. The only House Robot ever to be controlled from inside the arena- because it wasn't a robot. The reason its body is so large is because it's actually a modified steam shovel and has a driver concealed in the cockpit. Always had a soft spot for Onslaught, one of the few robots to use car-style steering, but the 2m turning circle was catastrophic for events calling for precision control.
It seems like the producers were trying to make it look like the final was that battle between Roadblock and Killertron. When Griffon appeared in this series, never was it mentioned that Oliver Steeples was in the grand final with Cunning Plan. Just find it very odd that Killertron was seeded #4, I have a feeling they were trying to warp the actual turnout of Series 1.
Nemesis makes it to the finish. Jonathan Pearce: 'I think they've just done enough' I love Jonathan Pearce, but sometimes he really did talk out of his arse. That said, commentary must be difficult at times.
The firefighters of robot enjoy themselves. Then they see nemesis and are like... *UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH* That or... *WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!*

I actually have some of the Robot Wars toys. Roadblock is one of them. First one I got,
Did they make a Roadblock toy? One of the few I could never find...

MMmm Phillipa Forrester ♥♥♥
She was gunged in series 2 of "get your own back!".
Nice roster, two old stars and two beauty robots
Roadblock was in the heat.
This was a stacked heat. Roadblock, onslaught, killerhurts, nemesis. Not to mention robot wars veterans John Denny from limpet
Roadblock was 3rd in series 2.
WHAT THE CHRIST IS THE SENTINEL
BLOODY HELL
A 360 degree obstacle.
I went to the same school as the kid who controlled onslaught. I remember he brought the robot in to school so we could see it up close.

ROFLMAO!!! Ah, the 90s...
Dude, seriously! Couldn't believe he said that. Fail.
I know, it was so racist!
SolitaryHowl could you imagine if he said that nowadays!
3 decades now.
I love how Nemesis's Gauntlet run starts with a shot of Bash firing his flamethrower, as if to say "We all know how this is gonna end".
Sgt Bash hello mate
Nemesis ahh shiit not again
@@lloydnewman4158 The team were from Dublin.
Interesting: Under the fur is a green and red Nemesis. I wonder if they only put the fur on for TV.
The sentinel is awesome! And Onslaught's run was really fun :)

Enter The Sentinal!
god, seeing that intro with all the animated mechanics took me back to being like 3 years old. goddamn...
Old times.

@ulongkoror I'm pretty sure the whole point of the robot WAS to be set on fire.
@MicroGravity100 they've had time to test upgrades, I thin k they liked these results better.
they have gone out in flames at S1 I thought nemesis have learned.
He doesn't!.
THE OLD TERRORHURTZ AND ONSLAUGHT IN THE SAME HEAT!!!!!!!!
And diotor

@ 8.17 I have got a funny feeling this is going to happend.
Nemesis should have the ability of spontaneous combustion.
Unlucky in the main wars.
We're all here to see nemesis get set on fire. Admit it!
Sgt Bash was the guy.
Besides going into engineering for school, your story is identical to mine. I'd stay up until 11:00 PM every Saturday when I was 9 to watch this.
1998 this is in.
It's NEMESIS!!! BRING IN SARGENT BASH!!!
Nemesis turned into Diotor in seiries 3

WTF? Why would you change your armour from Steel to Aluminium Roadblock?! D'oh!
Nemesis AND Roadblock! The best team, and the first champion!
Roadblock.
Out of all the robot fight shows Robot Wars UK was the best by FAR
Series 2.
Roadblock & Nemesis were also drawn in the very first heat from series 1, would've been nice to have the pair meet again in an Arena re-match.
Didn't happen.
Ah Nemesis. Keeping the tradition I see.

ah, when you were a kid and didn't realise the sentinel was part of a digger and had a man inside.
When you think about it, Nemesis and Diotoir must've both been pretty resilient robots to withstand being set on fire all the time.

@ 1:17 the most epic intro in series 2
From series 1-4.
When I see Onslaught, I can only think of it getting completely owned by Razor later, along with Matilda getting owned!
Alan Wood, the team captain was part of the Tough As Nails team in series 2 of the Dutch wars. He died v Scraptosaur during round 1 in heat 4/5.
Summoning Diotoir !
