$3800 abandoned BARN FIND Chevelle, How BAD is it?

  • Finally back home and off the trailer! Our new #barnfind Chevelle Malibu is ready for a good look-over and inspection. We can really crawl around this #chevelle and evaluate its condition. Like most abandoned #musclecar of this era, we will have some rust to address on this car. Especially since this car was left forgotten about for the last 24 years!
Before Trevor and I jump in and start reviving this classic muscle car, we need to evaluate what we are starting with. At first glance, this Chevy Chevelle will need the quarter panels and roof to be replaced. The rust and rot on those sections are just too far gone. We have moderate rust in the trunk floor, rear seat pan, and main section of the floor. But the big question will be.... How do our rocker panels look? Is there any rust on our inner or outer rockers? What kind of condition are the floor cross braces in? Depending on their condition, these are the main parts that will dictate our options for the rust repairs. How much of a floor repair are we looking at? Trevor and I will inspect his new 72' Chevelle and make a call on how good it is.
We also need to get into the trunk. The trunk lock cylinder is jammed up. This will be Trevor's first real task on working on a car. I will show him how to drill out the trunk lock cylinder, and we will finally find out what lies within the trunk?
In addition, we will take a peak under the hood. We will assess what kind of condition this old small block Chevy 350 is in. We need to understand the overall condition of this Chevelle so we can formulate a plan to get this car running and back on the road.

Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute ‪@WyoTechAutoMechanicSchool‬ where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to “WyoTech,” I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the “Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards” for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the “Top Ferrari Technician in the World!”
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-3U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

What would you like to see Trevor and I do with this Chevelle? Keep it original? Resto mod it? Or go late 80’s-90’s pro street vibes? Let us know.

I'd like to see what he ends up wanting to do with it. But remind him that it can always be changed up later down the road.

I have shown him different genres and styles of builds. He has a few favorites, but I really want to get him to some car shows this summer so he can see the differences in person. Then we will see what his flavor is.

99% of these are either SS cloned resto moded or LS swapped… keeping it original would be the real rarity these days.

@@donrocket50 I completely agree with you. Rest assured that this will not have a LS swapped into it! And I did explain to Trevor that we could SS clone it…. And he was uninterested in that.

Spent my life bringing cars like this back to life. And one thing you will learn is that there is a reason for vinyl tops. When the hull were built sometimes the roofs ended up off square. So to fix them they had machines that would push them to where they needed to be. Doing so left behind small waves and blemishes in the roof line. The fix for that was vinyl top. Run your hands along the top of the sail panel and you should find some of the spots. They can definitely be fixed of course but I thought you should know to help aid in y'alls decision with what to do with the roof.
When I was 12 I bought my first car. It was in far worse shape than that chevelle. But its a 69 Camaro. I still have that one. My son's first ended up being a 69 C-10. 6 cyl and 3 speed on the column. He is now 21 and we are tearing it back down and building a pro touring style suspension with a turboed LS using the 3 speed lol. Y'all have some adventures ahead. Im glad to see others keeping this lifestyle alive.

When, and where I grew up this sort of thing was normal. All my friends did the same thing. It’s sad how much it has changed in such a short time. I do feel very fortunate that we found this car, and that I am able to bring him through this experience. You know first hand how rewarding it can be.

My vote is keep it as original as possible while updating a few things here and there like brakes and suspension to make it safer and more drivable. The world has plenty of full resto mods and SS clones. But whatever Trevor decides, it will awesome!

We will absolutely make some updates and changes. The 4 wheel manual drum brakes will have to go! We might steel some of the SS styling elements, but Trevor wants to keep it badged as a Malibu.

Thanks for the Sub!!! Excited to have you here on the channel. We have a rough idea of what we want to build the car to. But for now, the goal is to get it fully functional. Get all the mechanincals, and electrical sorted. Then we can cruise it for a while and enjoy it some before we tackle the rust..

I had a 72 I skinned the quarter very easy compared to full panels welded it on top edge clean up with a file something to consider depending on how ruff your window sill are fun with your son priceless

Unfortunately, the rust is pretty bad all the way around the perimeter of the quarter panels. I would rather replace a complete panel, over working in that many patch panels.

The more we have been filming, the more he is getting comfortable in front of the camera. The kid is oozing with personality, just wait for the next Chevelle video. It really starts to show on that one!

If Y'all want pin's, Might be worth thinking about old school, painted pin stipes.
I always thought they looked better myself.

Solid suggestion! I am also quite fond of hand pin striping and lettering.
