For 20 years, I thrived as a Master Technician for Ferrari and BMW, earning the title of "Best Ferrari Technician in the World" in 2019. Now, I bring that same precision and passion to the channel, showcasing in-depth, meticulous projects like restoring a 1988 BMW E28 M5, my son’s ’72 Chevelle Malibu, and our ’79 Centurion jet boat. While I enjoy diverse projects, my true passion lies in servicing and maintaining Ferraris.
Expect to see disciplines such as engine building, fabrication, rust repair, diagnostics, bodywork, and painting, alongside the unique technical challenges of working on and maintaining Ferraris.
Join me, Roman, and Charles, the shop dogs, as I share my expertise, enthusiasm, and obsession with perfection on every project.

Unexpected SURPRISES on this FERRARI F355 Engine Tear Down
This is the last thing I want to find when starting a timing belt replacement....

I found myself in a situation I try hard to avoid-a significant increase in the scope of work after my pre-service inspection. In my first video on this F355, I detailed my preferred method for pre-service inspections, including checking for signs of failing valve guides.
The Ferrari F355 is very susceptible to valve guide wear, especially in earlier models with bronze guides. Even later cars with sintered guides can suffer this issue, making a compression test essential before any major service begins.
During this car’s compression test, I found a noticeable discrepancy between Bank 1 and Bank 2. I initially suspected incorrect camshaft timing, but that was NOT the case.
In today’s video, I tear down the F355 engine in preparation for the timing belt replacement, removing ancillary belts, timing covers, and cam covers. Here’s a critical step: I don’t jump into the timing belt service immediately. Instead, I leave the belts tensioned to check camshaft timing on all four cams. This step revealed the timing was spot on-a rare find.
So, what caused the compression issue? A leak-down test showed a 10% difference between Bank 1 and Bank 2, pointing to a worn valve job caused by worn valve guides.
This unexpected finding meant pivoting to remove the cylinder heads and send them to my machinist.
So instead of walking you through the cam timing procedure as planned, I will walk you through the steps required to remove the cylinder head from this 355 engine. It’s time to get to work!
Whether you’re a Ferrari enthusiast, considering a pre-purchase inspection, or just curious about the level of detail required to maintain a classic like the F355, this video is a must-watch. Sit back, relax, and geek out with me as we dive into everything Ferrari.

Good job 👏🏿 👍🏿. See, there is fun to be had without an Xbox 😊
It's pretty sad if you were the best Ferrari mechanic in 19
This is extremely painful to watch you work on a Ferrari like a f****** neanderthal
Maybe you should get a bigger pry bar to pry on a Ferrari engine you are not very smart
That second cam you loosen definitely moved.
Don't take your car to this guy it'll cost you a million dollars in labor. He will charge you 5 hour flat rate even if it only realy takes 10 minutes
I would attach the old cam to the end of the new cam. Balance point at the junction; slides right in , in less than a minute. Try it... Queasyrider
Refreshing to see professional. Thanks
170 ppm to 114 seems like a big difference to me
Old school the machinery and the match book trick
I recall seeing the timing-belt procedure in a factory service manual and the illustration shows to lock the cams using vice-grips.
are you serious? vise grips??!?!? oh my god
Ya me too but I put it in standing up the block so it's straight down on install
Lol another expert 😂
Yet again a morsel gleaned from the wise. I lament that the internet wasnt a thing until i was too old to care. Armed with the internet you are formidable.
Why didn't Ferrari use timing chains and avoid all the complex maintenance ?
Good old Italian engineering
Reminds me of working on my friends Pantera. It had a 351 Cleveland for the power plant😊
Reminds me of working on my friends Pantera. It had a 351 Cleveland for the power plant😊
Small block mopar has big holes in lifter valley
What a piece of unreliable junk, no thanks I'll keep riding my bike cycle to work.
Something would be really nice to do while it's out after you get your repairs done is to dry ice clean the engine compartment and the entire engine
I do this but for a different reason, in the event there’s an issue with your new cam bearings being to tight you don’t have to disassemble the whole bottom end to take it back to machine shop lol
Just popped up on my feed. Dude, you’re good. My favorite Ferrari being broken down. Love it. SUBSCRIBED!!!!
Pahhhhhhhhh......swap a GT350 Mustang engine into it. Bigger, still keeps the flat plane crank, and most importantly, TIMING CHAINS. Cheaper too. Or you could 458 swap it. No more timing belts.
Or, use a c9uple 5/16 bolts ande dont act like its a touch screen thats stuck and get to be a rammer
One of the manifolds has signs of failure
On some engines there are 2 spacers behind one of the belt covers also a line of centre pops will stop the gaskets coming out at the ends
The financial resources to purchase a vehicle such as this extends beyond the ability to park it in your garage.....the real cost is inherent to the amount you'll spend to make sure it is maintained properly.
I've used a Phillips head screwdriver that fits into one of the bolt holes for as long as I can remember. I've had zero issues
When did you install the core plugs?
Doesn't the secondary air valve stop the exhaust gasses reaching the pump if the non-return valves fail?
What a messy and unorganized shop this guy has! 🤣 It's nice to see someone take pride in what they do.
If a leak down shows both banks even as far as conpression goes, then I think the difference in cranking compression bank to bank very well could have been your throttle hitting the hose clamp. The linkage play/flex probably allowed one bank to be fully open and the other bank to be slightly restricted.
Note that the tension on the belts is specified for new belt installs. As the engine heat cycles and effectively gets larger, the belts will lose tension. This is by design. In the end, for the accessory belts at least, it is about running the least tension without slippage. If they aren’t slipping in the cold or in the wet and at high RPM, there is literally no reason to run them tighter, especially as frequently as they are changed on most Ferraris. It is much friendlier on all the accessory bearings and shafts.
I don't really get it: Let's assume the engine is working good before you mess with it, then let's also assume you can get a convoluted fixture that allows you to lock in place both the crank and the cams, why the fuck does it matter where the shit is, or is not? You just replace the belt, if you are able to lock shit in place, you don't give a fuck where is what... Shit happens only when you underestimate the power of the valve springs....that's it...
This man knows his stuff.
These are beautiful cars. Not many cars sound or look as good as a F355. I had one for 20 yrs and put 60,000 miles on it and I have to say they are money pits. Most are not driven much and are only weekend cars. As far as tracking them, I tracked mine 5 or 6 times and never saw a F355 street car on track. I saw 360, 430 etc but never a F355. Nothing is simple on this car . Unless you do your own work, it will cost a fortune. I have the receipts to prove it. Other owners will swear they never had a problem, but they do not drive them. You see many cars that are 25 years old with less than 25000 miles.Ask them if they would take a 500 mile road trip without worries.
Laughs in Hemis, with oil galley right in the way you have no access anyways.😂
I like to install my camshaft like a javelin throw. Works 0% of the time...every time 😊
@@ALW86 😂
Beveling cam lobes with burrs and angel grinder would prevent damage on bearings, duh..!
When you get this all back together I'd love to see working through the throttle balancing procedure. I've found it maddening dealing with the heat of the engine and exhaust fumes blasting you all the while the rpms fluctuating with fans kicking off and on... then not being able to really see the throttle stops dialing those in. Fighting manometers. It would be great to see how someone else approaches it. Thanks for these great videos!
super cool video! thanks for sharing. Please explain how the bank 2 pistons are all at the midpoint. I would have expected the same but opposite of the bank 1. What's the firing order?
figured it out..flat plane crank like you stated ..I thought I was goin to lose a night of sleep over that one. TDC on a v block = midpoint opposite bank. BDC = midpoint opposite bank. pretty wild. It's awesome to see inside a f355 engine.
Always fascinated about the five valve F355 engine, thank you for sharing this wonderful video series.
Imagine working on Chevy small block engines for 30 years and someone gave you this F355 engine to work on. You would think a madman designed it. hahaha
F355's 1 of my favorites
Dad tought me this way in the 90s thats and copious use of plasty gauge lol. Old school.
I salute you guys for keeping these old cars running. To me it seems questionable but compared to buying a new car, I guess it makes sense in some cases.
Newer isn’t always better. Especially when it comes to Ferrari. Believe it or not, the older the car the better in my eyes.
Nick. Best detailed service guide Ive seen so far on the f355. I am in the process of buying a 355 and plan on doing a lot of my own service work myself. Your content and video work is A1. I can't thank you enough. It is an intimidating process buying a 355 because of all the negative content about problems and expensive repairs that can occur. I am a more educated buyer now and look forward to the journey of ownership.
🙏 Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the content. Best of luck with your 355 purchase! They are outstanding cars. Unfortunately their reputation in regard to service needs is well earned. However I attribute most of that to unfamiliar and inexperienced technicians servicing them. I am hopeful that these videos will help others with the service and maintenance needs of these cars. When maintained and serviced properly I’ve found that they are great machines. Keep your eye on the channel, as I have a lot more Ferrari content planned. ~ Nick
Gotta say, tho everything on this engine is a work of art, the exhaust manifolds are particularly lovely
I couldn’t agree with you more! ~ Nick
Dampeners can slip on the rubber and give you false timing points
Correct. That is why I always confirm the TDC marks on my balancer before I install the heads.
