E28 M5 Restoration, Introduction and Project Overview [1988 BMW M5]

Actually, this project is one of the main driving factors to why I started creating here. So, we get to jump back in time and see my start...
I am excited to start sharing the build of this #E28M5 with you guys here on my channel. I have been working on this M5 for a good customer of mine for a few years, with periods of inactivity for various reasons. Recently I have been able to complete some other projects in the shop that were keeping me from this E28, so now it’s time to jump back on it. I am excited to have this M5 back at the top of the list and my top priority!
Since I started this build years ago, I have already done a fair amount of work on this M5 before I started my channel. In this and the upcoming videos, I will do my best to recap and bring you up to speed covering the work that I have already done to this E28.
This is going to be an extensive build. I would say that it will be 90% of a full nut and bolt restoration. Now I say restoration loosely… because we will not be keeping the car original. The car will be built in a Restomod / OEM plus style. We will keep all the looks and style of the car while improving its functionality and performance of it where we can. We will be mindful of our choices in modifications to try and keep the car looking like a car from 1988…
There will be a tremendous amount of work to do, and cover on this E28. I will be taking you through every aspect of the process to restore and rebuild this M5 to better than new condition. I will be going over rebuilding and tweaking the legendary S38 inline 6.

About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion to this day.

After a move back home to the PNW I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines, but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another 10 years as a Ferrari Master Technician, & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 I was selected by Ferrari as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the “Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards”, consecutively for 4 years in a row. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st. Winning the competition & earning the title of the Top Ferrari Technician in the world!
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

Congrats on the buy! As you mentioned, you finding out that these cars are getting pretty old, age, time and the environment are taking a toll on them regardless of mileage. That is really why this one is going down so far. The owner doesn't want to keep fussing with it when it's done. He wants it all new and ready to go!

I’m so looking forward to following your work on the M5. I just recently had some body work done to mine and currently putting everything back together. Eventually I’ll need to get to the 190k mile engine.
The S38 is quite robust. This car has pretty much the same mileage as yours, and it’s still running very strong. However it will all be new, as per the owners request.

Awesome! Can’t wait. What suspension are you looking towards? I went with an MCS 2WNR for mine. Looking forward to the outcome.
We will probably be doing something along the lines of Bilstien’s with H&R’s. The car likely won’t see much track time. It’ll be a street bruiser.
How do you like the ride with the MCS setup?

@@AutoTechNick Loving the MCS on my e28m5. MCS nailed it with the valving and spring set up. I had to go a couple rounds with MCS to get the correct set up in my e60m5, but we got it right the first time on the e28 for the street. On the track - they are 100% at home.
@EightyFiveHundred Did you purchase them directly from Motion?
@@AutoTechNick My shop, @oceansidemotorsports initially went through BW to purchase, but ended up working directly with MCS, as my e28m5 was the test mule. MCS should know my setup. My buddy @phopelain just reached out to MCS for his e28m5.

Great work! Where did you source the rear Euro valance?
We got that years ago. If I am remembering correctly I think I found it from a European seller off eBay. I am pretty certain that they are NLA by now. I have another buddy with an E28 M5 who was looking for one for quite sometime and was unable to find the full panel.
