  • This is not just any 1960 Ford Starliner, but a very rare Super-Starliner with the 360 Hp 352 V-8. It was the highest horsepower engine Ford put out for 1960. It was a mid-year introduction and was not very highly publicized.
    Sitting since roughly 1970, this one is FINALLY coming out of hibernation! You can see this at the MCACN show the Fall of 2021 in the Barn Finds and Hidden Gems display.

    My first car was a 1960 Ford Sunliner Convertible. I bought it used in 1964. It had the 352, 360 HP and the 3 speed had been put on the floor. The shifter was by Anson. The throw or movement between positions was extremely short with the Anson shifter. Mine was red with red interior. Had the baby hubcaps like the ones in this video. Had lots of fun with it. At the time, we all thought it was pretty fast. I kept it two years and then traded it for the neighbors 1962 Galaxie XL Convertible with the 390 automatic. Kept it till just after graduation from high school in 1967 when I ordered a new 1968 Ford Torino. I still have the Torino after 53 years. I have learned that the heads on the 352, 360 HP engine were the best heads Ford made for the FE engines. Those old cars were tanks compared to what we drive today, but were lots of fun too. Great memories! Like mom told ya, don't ever sell that car!

      Convertibles were Sunliners, not Starliners. My Father had a white with blue interior and 353 with automatic transmission Starliner

      Beautiful car, and one of my favorites as well, although I prefer the the 61 Starliner. The 61 had more of a "Ford look", with the traditional big round taillights.

    I have a 1961 star liner. I bought it 27 years ago. I'm already 65 I can even drive the car. I wish I good but good luck with the cand I hope you live with your kids. Take care and God bless you. And I love the story about your father and your mother. Keep up the good work

      I had a 61 Starliner back in 68 when I was 19. Dark blue with blue interior. Beautiful car. 390 auto. Great running car

    Driven lots of column shifts. Just can’t believe you can really get on it with one.
    The throw on column shifts is almost comical. I do love the car. One of the best designs in the early sixties. This one is exceptional.

      You'd be surprised what us old farts could do with a three on the tree. Hey, it's mostly what everyone had back then. Yeah, 3 on the tree, mechanical brakes and generators. Well, brethren, we could work on our cars - and did. Driving was participation with the car, not just steering it down the road listening to the CD. We had one heck of a good time in those large rear seats. Uh, huh, un, huh!

    I had one when I was young and mine was the same super starliner with the hippo 360, with a 4 speed tranny, I loved my Ford so much!!

    When I was 9yo my Father showed me a one thousand dollar bill on our way from West Michigan o Dearborn and Daddy bought a new 1957 Ford 2-Door Custom. He traded it in Dearborn for a 1960 black Ford Hairline Sedan. I was given that car in 1966 when I lefty home for Ferris State College. The. Hairline had over 200k miles when I filled it with gas, and driving out of the station the gas tank fell off in the middle of the road. It was a standard column shift with overdrive knob you pulled out. What a car and memory for this 74yo Vietnam Veteran! Thanks for the video!

    Those 3 stars on the B-pillars are on all Starliners (hence the name Starliner) regardless of horsepower rating of engine. And the stainless steel/'polished tin' on the rear quarter panels was moulding standard to all Starliners and maybe even other models, but NOT to the Custom 300 or Town Fairlane nor possibly on a few lower-end Galaxies. The skirts are the removable 'teardrop' shaped stainless units which covered the rear wheels. Now the valve covers and air filter looked gold to me per the camera quality and lighting. "Gold on black" was the color scheme of the highest-performance V8s of the FE and 90°V families until and including 1965. My father had a Starliner with a 300 horse in it ("light yellow on black" scheme) The washer fluid bag was in a different location on inside of driver fender. That engine is correct from what you are showing, because it has cast-iron headers which was ONLY on the 360 horsepower. It should have a Holley four-barrel carburetor and dual point dustributor. It had mechanical cam and lifters in that engine and a higher lift camshaft than the 300 horse version. Make sure that the oil that you use in that engine has a lot of ZDDP in it.
    REMOVE the distributor and get a speed wrench (the tool that has an offset like a crankshaft) with extension and a 5/16 hex male bit, turn it counterclockwise to prime the oil in the engine BEFORE you ever CRANK that engine over EVEN with the spark plugs removed. The top of the distributor shaft underneath the rotor needs oiling as well, but not much. Remove the felt wick first then oil it until it settles down. If it never drains down there is too much in there afterwards. Reinsert the wick. You don't want oil slinging inside the distributor cap. But a little oil needs to be in there.

      Dan Correction: the "stars" are on the "C" pillars and fender ornaments. Starliners, Town Victorias and Sunliners are hardtops, and do not have roof "B" pillars. The stars appear on all Galaxie-series cars, reflecting the overall "Galaxie" theme. Roof stars only come in blue.
      For those who are interested, you can often find the original assembly line paper broadcast form tucked somewhere inside the interior. Depending on assembly plant, it can be found under the carpet, between the seat springs and fabric, inside the instrument panel or stapled to the back of a door or trim panel. Depending on the level of abuse the interior sustained over time, this 'birth certificate' can range from mint condition to crumbs.
      I once parted out a 1960 Fairlane that had a perfectly-installed 352. The data plate indicated it was a 292. I found a mint broadcast form inside the passenger door panel which indicated the car was a 352 and the 292 on the data plate was a typo.

    In 1960 Ford offered a factory Crome hop-up kit that included Crome valve covers, air cleaner, and radiator cover. it also has factory cast iron exhaust headers. Very rare. If you can find the owners manual you will find those options in the back pages. Those where the good old days for sure.       I had a 1962 406 car . The dress up kit was available then and following years. Never thought offered in 1960 . Could have added later as well as the mustang hood scoop ! Tell tail item is the Fuel Filter that was only on the hi po cars .....and very few people added afterward , unless they wanted to be absolutely as original and correct. If I recall the data code is the same for the 300 hp and 360 hp engines . Engine block and head codes could verify the engine . I am betting tat this is a real 352 hi po

      And from dyno testing on 550-600 hp cars, those iron headers do surprisingly well against aftermarket headers. You have to have 650 and up hp to really see big differences in power. Ford made good stuff for the 427. I wish they had done more for the muscle guys. It was embarrassing for regular cars fighting with one hand tied behind their back. I wish they had made a 390 CJ in 66 . The FE deserves more street cred than they got from Ford just shooting themselves in the foot. The CJ Mustang is a great story, but insurance was already onto them. I wish they had started a few years sooner.

      @@normanjones5167 Yes the original CJ is the GT “B” cam, there was a “C” cam that was available and the primary recipient was the SCJ. The B cam is pretty good. I can hear the difference between them though.

    I have one of these engines. In my shed. My father's friend was a mechanic and gave it to me for my truck when I was in high school. He told me that it came out of a talladega race car that was totaled. This was in 1978 when I received it. It had a spun bearing so I rebuilt the lower end and had the heads done. The machine shop told me these were special the exhaust valves were larger than normal. He said I had something special and yes in my ford sport custom it was fast it would eat 454's

    I once read a road and track article about stock 1960 Starliner, With the high performance 352 and 3 speed Overdrive running a 13.50 quarter mile and 150 mile an hour top speed

    My dad had one he bought new in 1960 with the hi po package. It had the gold valve covers, rubber floor mats, 3 speed on column. I think my dad said it had bigger brakes and maybe a slightly different suspension. He did drag race it some. Once he was protested at drag strip and they wanted to pull the engine down. Well, that didn't happen. I think he beat Ronnie Sox in the finals. I've heard a lot of stories on how fast it was. Dad did a lot of street racing back then, and I'm sure it was over a mile or more. I do remember dad added the bullet bumper guards on front and back. Funny memories. Mom would drive it to church on Sunday morning. Sometimes the hub caps would be off. I guess dad was racing on Saturday night. Dad traded it in on 1964. Oh I wish I could find that car.

    That is one special car. 1960's are hard to come by. Hi-Po's are rare as hens teeth. Thanks for the vid.
    I'm from that era. What I can't remember is whether it was the cast iron case all synchro 3-speed ( which I think was coded C5AZ ? ), or the earlier model non-sychro 1st gear 3-speed ...
    The C5AZ was a stout tranny that was also used in column shifted trucks. Sold behind 390's, and not broken very often. It would take all the abuse you could throw at it. 4,000 RPM side stepping the clutch was not a problem :-)

      Thanks, we all heard about these specials.. Interestingly, i settled fir a “61 Ford Convert/352/4. / auto”, that was junky, getting a nice LOW MILES,66 GLAXIE XL 500 /4 speed/352/4::: ( from local MOPAR DEALERresponded well to build ups( brakes, Shocks, COOLANT recovery System( FORD PERFORMANCE, then they went to AITO PARTS).. Always interesting with FORD HIPO, remember the three Dueces in trunk, fir 61/390 e fines, etc. (*& INTERCEPTOR STUFF.?

      It probably had the older with synchro only on 2nd and 3rd. I don't think any car had a synchronized 1st until about 1963, except for the 1935 Pontiac DeLuxe, for that year only.

    When I was a kid, the house down the street was owned by a young couple. One of their brothers lived with them and there were always 2 black '60 starliners in the driveway. Couldn't ride my bike past there enough!

    My favorite full size Ford. I recall seeing a blue one at a show that had a Cammer in it. Then it was in a Magazine at one point in the early 80’s. I’d drive it just like it is. I can see his old man throwing Hail Mary’s tossing it through the gears. Black and red. My god that’s a gem.

    Have a friend out here in Virginia that has one of these. It's red and mildly customized. And even he says the starliners of that year are rare as hen's teeth. This just proves his point.

      @@AutoArchaeology ... I have a bit of speculation about the puncture in the fender. Fan clutches were pretty rare in those days, and fans running at extreme RPM would occasionally release a blade that had more than one effect. First, the blade can go in almost any direction, and when it does, it has incredible kinetic energy. I experienced the effect in my old Dodge pickup. The blade went right through the driver side inside fender which was fairly heavy gauge steel in 1952. The fan threw the blade in '68 or '69. It also shook the bejeezus out of the truck, eventually cracking the water pump. I was a dumb kid, unaware that I needed to replace the fan immediately. I was only beginning to learn about automotive mechanics. At any rate, I remember that hole the fan blade made, and it popped in my head the moment I saw the hole in the Ford's fender.

      It is extremely rare to find a car in this condition it's only original once, you preserve what's there and this car has a lot to preserve, holes and all. You do not restore a time capsule.

    Fantastic ! Even more so since you knew the car very early on.......and it's still here. They are scarce with the 352/360 h.p. Just to add to Jerry's post below, from the factory, the car had the large( 3/8 " ) fuel line, big brakes, fuel filter/canister that's on it, and you see the engine code as ' Y ' ( 352/300h.p. ) there was no other code set aside for the 360 h.p. Fantastic !

      Thanks, ALWAYS A LOT OF INTEREST IN FORDS, since early 1960s, and I started hearing about DKRD INTERCEPTORS, ETC. I had lots of,Fords over the years.. Interestingly, my “61;Convertible/352/4BB/ Auto ,”was “ Junk in just a couple years”: unfortunately a 1956 Dord Fairlane/TBIRD ENGINE/ac/4 door / loaded Florida , *,low,low mileage Car was one of the best but got totalled early 1965,accident : had plans to KEEP THIS 56.. Anyways, always nice to,fingered out FORDS; ever since seeing those 3 Deuces in Trunks for59s *& Interceptor stuff in the 1950’s!!

    Magnifcent find. I remember a '58 Goldflash here in New Zealand with a tri power-ed 352. It ran 13.9s back in the early '90s, and was all factory parts. I was really surprised, as being tri power I'd thought it was a 390 !!

    The exhaust manifolds are correct and the distributor would be a dual point mechanical advance (no vacuum advance), that is also correct for the engine. The engine would have solid lifters and appears to be correct for a 352 hipo.

      Also alum intake 3”frt brakes frt trying. Bro line runs across front cross member at radiator. Kelsey Hayes stamped 15” wheels ,large generator pulley and it has the engine dress up kit. Donald Allen should be the person to restore this car. That is a true 352 hi-po

      @@opera93 No problem I have had a 63 300 q code I was the 2nd owner. When you checked the hi-po engine on the order form there were some things you got automatically like, bigger brakes,driveshaft,4 pinion rear end heavy duty springs,3/8 fuel line 15”k.h. Wheels etc,. Then some things you couldn’t get no matter how much you begged. But My dad worked for Carey Paul Ford in Decatur Ga. from 1960-1993 and my uncle worked for Al Means Ford in Decatur and I have been around these a lot. Then I met Donald Allen in the late 90,s and really got educated on the high performance cars of that era.

    3 speed with O.D. Underrated fun! Rust appears in some weird places. I don’t know how he can resist at least giving it a wash and a car cover, until there’s time to do more.

      There was a U-Tube video of a 60 or 61 with a 4 speed on the column with a lever under the dash for reverse. But 1st was where reverse normally is and you’d shift through all 4 put it in neutral and pull that lever and have reverse. That took some ingenuity . It seems like that would be a kit. Really 😎

    Friend of mine had one of these in purple with three on the tree. That was back in 1960 and the car was new. He drag and street raced and after a year of destroying multiple diffs, his grandparents who had paid for it got tired of the mess and took it back from him.

    I was 10 years old when my dad bought a 60 Black Starliner with the stock V8. In 1961 my uncle bought a red 61 with what he always called The Police engine. My uncle used to laugh about pulling his boat to the lake and out racing other hot cars from a stoplight. My brother always told me that our car would rub the rocker panels while negotiating a hard curve and not spin out. He was hell on wheels in that car and we were probably lucky it didn't have the police engine.

    There is a 1960 Starliner in a car show that's in my area is silver and light blue just like that that is an awesome car and that man is lucky to have something like that I'm good for him for wanting to keep it original

    The chrome is from the dress-up kit that dealers could install to give the car a little sales appeal. Factory would be gold. The beehive cover is priceless now, most were discarded.

      The "beehive cover" is the domed lid on the air cleaner.
      A lot of people ended up throwing those out and switching to a different air cleaner altogether... I guess all of them that were thrown away must be 100 feet down in landfills now😬

    Remember seeing something extremely close to this sitting on a farm about a mile or two north and west of a tiny town of Serena Illinois . quite a few times last summer . Definitely an eye catcher out in broad daylight .

    This was a huge car by modern standards, as large as a Lincoln. I used it to move and put my wife's ironing board across the trunk behind the rear seat! I learned why Nascar drivers installed hood pins and hood louvers when I drove it from Las Vegas to Reno. At the time there was no speed limit on the highways in Nevada and about 110 MPH the hood would rock from side to side letting the air out, all the time being held only by the hood latch. Of course there was no speed rating on the tires (7.10x15 Firestone 500s) and I've thanked the Lord for protecting me; it's one thing to hit 100+ MPH on a strip, quite another to do it for hours.

      It seems huge, but the Lincoln was bigger. MUCH bigger. Wouldn't fit in most garages, just like a Cadillac Fleetwood.

    I bought a 1960 Starliner in 1970 when l came home from Vietnam, it was light blue, my buddy had a shop and did the interior all white! looked sharp, wish l still had it!

    When I was a kid (1975-1980), right outside my bedroom window,the neighbor had a 1970 GTX parked in his yard. The engine was out but other than that it was complete down to the rally wheels and in good shape. Buckets and console, hood scoops, 4speed, yellow with black stripes. I always liked the looks of those cars. At the time, my mom was driving a 1963 Rivera with the 2x4 barrel engine. Nothing going on in the automotive world like we had back then. I’ve kinda stuck with the 68-72 Pontiac Tempest/LeMans/GTO cars as I grew up but had a few Chevelle’s also. My last “project” was a 1982 Jag XJS with a small block. It was fun but my butt was too close to the road and my face too close to the windshield, lol. Oddly, I’ve alway carried my parts around on Ford trucks for some reason. I had a clean 66 3/4 ton with a 352. I drove it for a couple of years with 7psi of oil pressure at an idle and it never complained. Freshened up the motor, drove it another year and it was still running good when I sold. Brutal but solid New Mexico truck. Now I’m rambling,,,,sorry.
    This Ford is SWEET!

      @@chrisjeffries2322 - I wasn’t old enough to drive but I knew it was something special. It made me think of Speed Racers car. The interior was sooo cool, even the back seats. I remember seeing the two carbs and hearing my Dad talk about it. I had a chance to buy a 1965. After I got out of the service in 1984 there was a used lot in Pascagoula Ms. that had TWO of them, one with the 2x4 option! Unfortunately just out of my budget by a few hundred dollars. I considered robbing a liquor store or something lol.

    As an owner of a triple black 64 and a diehard blue Ford guy his car is unbelievable . I don’t know how I ever got hooked on these full-size bars but I love them and this car is a real gem I’ll be looking out for it thanks Joey

    Despite the dust and rust, it's a super cool slice of history. A guy on youtube, company name ARMOR? details these cars, back to almost showroom new. Would be worth spending the money and have a professional clean it. The car deserves it. Pops would want it that way.

    Nice video, thanks for posting. I never saw engine chrome dress up until 62. I have a 60 hipo, restoration took 3 years, but that took 1 year of cutting and replacing panels after sandblasting. Things found unique: Block cast B9AE -6015B with "HP" suffix on the stamped pad at L/Front. Aluminum intake, dual point centrifugal advance distributor. Big cast headers, 3" brakes and 15" wheels. Front sway bar. 3 speed OD transmission. Hipo option cost $313.10. Hipo VINS did not begin until 62, so the 60s used the "Y" in the 5th digit of the VIN.
    I see the story of the fender damage, dubious at best. Would love to have heard it run.

    My first car was a '60 Starliner, when I was 15, in 1974. Mine had a 292 with a Ford-O-Matic - a real slug, but I loved it. Red, white top with a red/black interior like this one.
    BTW, the stars on the C-pillar were also blue on mine, so I don't think that was an indicator of the big engine.

      Too bad I didn't have it. I would have altered that 292 to 57 specs and had 212 horsepower, and would have replaced that 2 speed Ford-O-Matic with the 3 speed version.

    I had one just like that in 1965. Same engine and same interior. The color inside and out was the same. It would smoke the tires thru 1st and most of 2nd gear. Loved that car.

    Beautiful car! I was born in the early 60s and don’t remember seeing the Starliners until I started reading car enthusiast magazines. I have read that the HiPo 352 was supposed to be pretty quick per contemporary magazine articles, but the factories were all tweeting their cars before turning them over to writers to test. Great video!

    In years past,there was a hot rod magazine that did a story on a '61 Starliner with a 427 SOHC in it. It was beautiful! Also some years later, I watched a video of a nostalgia car show. It might've been the same '61 with the 427 SOHC at the show! ❤😎👍

    I have an original aluminum intake for this very year car hanging up in my garage on the wall.
    Took me awhile to figure out exactly what year it was.
    Firing order is on the rear left corner of the intake and there is no cast in part number, only an oval with FOMOCO on the right side next to the carb flange.
    Intake has a flat carb flange also not angled like on the later cars.
    If it had a cast in part number then it means it came straight from Fords foundry.
    Because it does not, that means it was cast outside Ford, in a jobber shop / foundry.
    Probably Offenhauser. I do not really know.
    My first thought was this was for a boat / marine application, because of the firing order location on the rear of the intake. Wrong.
    Then I remembered the earlier Fords had reverse open hoods.
    I seen a rerun of "Thunder Road" with Robert Mitchum.
    That helped me narrow my search down a lot.
    The intake is for sale if anyone is interested.
    I'm in Michigan outside Dearborn by the airport.

    My 1st car was a '60 StarLiner with a 390ci and a 3 sp.auto on the column, white 2 dr. with blue interior, and the ''stars'' on the back column were solid chrome, no color on them. Mine also was an Illinois car ( Aurora ).

      @@Draginknee could have been a supplier issue. Ford also known to make minor running changes through the model year. Sometimes for improvement and sometimes for cost-saving.

      @@hotrodray6802 But they don't have the low-end torque, they don't ride as well, they don't have anywhere near as much room inside, they have tiny hard seats, they are ugly, they are too small, and you can't fix them, you have to bring them to a shop.

    At first, when you said Starliner, during your intro, i got confused and thought that this might have been a Studebaker Starliner instead. But as soon as you mentioned 352, i new immediately that this was a Ford. Especially, when i saw the tail lights, on the rear bumper.     I can only wish I had not traded my hypo sunliner on the 69 428 torino ,though both cars are my all-time favorites. At 77 I've had some very fast and fun fords though I think the aforementioned one of a hundred sunliners is remaining my favorite. Having read one of the comments concerning shifting the T85 three speed I can assure you it did very well when racing without lifting my right foot.

    One of my favorite cars was a 1961 Ford Starliner. It had a Hi-Po 390, 375 HP, factory headers and 3 speed trans w/OD.
    I owned it from about 1967 to 1969.
    Sure was a beauty.

    My Dad bought a white Starliner new. Traded it for a new 62 Thunderbird. I saw Perry Mason driving a black 60 Skyliner (convertible) just last week.

    The three stars are on the roof panel, that's part of the Starliner package. The ceiling was supposed to have stars in the headliner inside.
    Thier were a few other features with the package also.

    This is a nice car and special among Starliner's. I hope whoever's hands this falls into keeps the car original as it should be, including right down to the three-speed column shifter. I owned a '60 Galaxie Town Sedan, and I've been a car guy my entire life. The decorative stars or navigation themed trim pieces is blue inside all of them. I recall only the Galaxie and higher models like the Starliner had these. The rust-through on the horizontal sections on this car is odd. I have the feeling that during storage rock salt inadvertently flew onto it causing that.

    I had one ordered in 1960 and delivery accepted in July 1960. The HP model number was Y in the serial # (0_53Yxxxxxx)Where _ is the assembly plant. The cast iron headers say this is the 360 HP.
