  • We Dive into a fantastic 1960 Ford Starliner with a 360 HP FE connected to a 3-on-the-Tree transmission. This car was definitely build for drag racing! We found it at the Ray Skillman Auto Museum in Greenwood, Indiana. If you need a new vehicle, check them out at Skillman Ford and ask for my friend Jill. Tell her you saw her name on the REVan Evan Channel.

Wheni was a kid in the mid 70's, I tried to talk my mom into buying a black 61 Starliner with a red interior.,292 Y block, but she wanted a newer car so she ended up buying a 68 Fury lll instead. Loved that Starliner.

In the fall oh 1959 I ordered a new 1960 Ford with the 360 HP 352 cube engine, & three speed with overdrive tranny. At first, I was really disappointed. My friend with a 250 HP 348 Chevy could out run me, but later, after it had a few more miles & a good tune up, it made any 348 chevy look sick. Had 4.10 Equa Lock rear gears .

I've even heard these 352 hipo'swould give the 409's fits. In the early 60's with Ford's dedicated Total Performance they were whipping up on the gm and mopars like mad with cars like the Thunderbolt and light weight Galaxies were hard to beat.

Honestly didn't know Ford had ever offered a High Performance 352. Always thought the performance engines started with the 390 during this era, and especially in the Starliner. Such a work of art, nothing built today can compare to the older designs.

    • @EPstroker
      @EPstroker ปีที่แล้ว +3

Heck yes......they had a police interceptor 352 for the ford cop cars. I imagine that's what this engine is. A hot 352 will walk all over a 360 and keep up with a 390 pretty good.

What always stuck in my mind about the '60 Fords was it's unique one year style & was very different from the '59s & the '61s. Looks great in black. I remember a TV broadcast in the summer of '60 at Detroit dragway that featured a '60 Pontiac Catalina 389 Hiper, '60 Chevy Biscayne 348 tripower, '60 Plymouth Fury 383 hiper & a '60 Ford starliner 352 hiper. Back rthen 1/4 mile runs in the low 15s was a big deal.

First saw one coming at me while waiting for the school bus. What's with this thing. The solid lifter noise tipped me of this was different. Being a Ford kid, I wanted him to 'turn it on' after the corner. Yeah it was cool. They were to darn heavy at the drags.. Chevys were several hundred pounds lighter and every Ford I saw make a run was a one wheeler.
I later got to see one give the competition everything they could handle. I made way to the pits and talked with the owner wherein he said the original engine lost a bearing. The engine was then machined to Ford blueprint specs. He said the way it came from Ford, it was way off. Once he had it machined it turned into an animal. He welded the spiders in the posi and then it was a winner. Remember the 'Butel-air' Firestone gummy street tires ? He was never beat after he bought those. Seems as I remember 13:80 - 13:90 through the exhaust. Some of the Super Stocks could run better but his was simply a street driver with those clattering lifters. He didn't have a tach, just feel and speedometer to shift. It was really fun to be a kid then.

Cool ol car! My Paw bought a 60 Ranch Wagon new. 292 two speed auto. I believe the Ranch Wagon was actually based off the Star Liner or that body series anyway wasn't it? It had the fins. Was actually a pretty dependable car and he ran the wheels off of it untill there was hardly anything left. Even after I ran it in a demo derby, it still ran and drove. But finally it went to the junkyard. Its steel probably built a lot of Toyotas! Hah!

    A interesting foot note here.
In 1961 only ford did have a 4 speed transmission a borg warner unit but it still had a H shift on the column with a lever under the dash to engage reverse . goofy stuff
Till ford developed a shifter for the 62 model year. And very late production 61 Ford's in the 300 fairlane line did have a floor mounted shifter cause NASCAR insisted or ford could not race they had to offer one . guys actually tried using the 4 speed column shift and it was just getting hung up all the time linkage locked or bound . but there are a few hundred 61 Ford's out there with a 4 speed on the tree. I think a guy has one on you tube even .

I love those! The 361 PI Edsel 303 hp was really cool and some had the 360 hp 352. I wish you could drive it, you would fall in love! A wonderful driver! The police loved them! And those same engines were available in Fire pickups for the Chief and in ambulance service. I rode in a fire pickup a 58 with a 303 hp Edsel 361. 4.05x3.5 and a solid cam and the tach would pull to 6k in every gear. Put it in 2nd and floor and the OD dropped and SHIT! It was the E-400 in the Edsel they made 409 ft lbs of torque and man in a 58 short WB Stepside it was faster than the cars, and 4.88 gears were available. I reed once that a well tuned 360 hp E-400 ( special special law enforcement) in the small 60 2dr sedan ticked into a toe in the 14s with 4.88s

That is a rare Starliner. I have only seen one in live. All kinds of Starliners, but only one with the 360 horse 352. I was in love with the 58 Police interceptor as well, 300 horse 352, three on the tree, OVERDRIVE. That was my dream car when I was real young. In the late fifties and early sixties Ford had an edge on all others as far as engines, in my opinion. The 390, 406, and 427 all in place in the early sixties. The Thunderbolt, oh my God. That 427 FE side oiler R code was under rated big time. I always thought they put out 460-476 horse instead of the 425 horse rating. I bet the production numbers on that 360 horse Starliner were very low. They only made that 360 horse in 1960, plus they only made the Starliners 3 years.

If I remove correctly the comp ratio was either 11 to 1 or 11 .2 to 1 Comp ratio, a 750 cam Carter AFB carb solid lifter cam & a dual point distributor, also had better flowing exhaust manifolds. Most came with a holly carb, but I asked for the Carter AFB.

These cars with that engine also came with 15" wheels & tires & bigger brakes from the factory.

@@stevedolyniuk3358 Thanks for the info , I was 8 years old in 1960 and didn’t get interested in cars until the mid 60s . My dad bought a new 64 Galixe 500 with a 390 , great car . The only repairs I can remember are brakes and a water pump ( normal maintenance ) . My current baby is a 2003 Marauder with 29,000 original miles , just drove it to the store and back today . Love that car !…….

Tripower or 6v started in 61 on the 390. Increased horsepower from 375 HP to 401 HP. Was never used on the 352.

Beautiful car. In my opinion, it needs some Cragar SS or some old-style Chrome Reverse wheels with Baby Moons.

Holman-Moody grafted a Starliner roof on a '62 Galaxie,to try and aerodynamically improve on the 406's shortcomings..... they could not turn at a competitive enough RPM (bottom end failures were common) - they were phased out in 1963, with the introduction of the legendary 427, which would run at 7 or 8 grand all day ; Ned Jarrett lapped the field 14 TIMES in the '65 Southern 500 behind such a motor.
