Worked on quite a few Y blocks over the years. You might want to remove both valve covers the next time you get her running. Check for proper oil flow to both rocker shafts. The Ford y blocks tend to sludge up and block oil passage way's in the cylinder block and heads. They used to sell top oiler kits for the rocker arm assembly that connects to the oil pressure sending units. The fix is to remove the heads and ream out L shaped oil passage in the block. Get yourself a dwell meter to check your points gap and for wornout bushings in the distributor. Dwell should show 27 degrees. Drop me a message if you need any advice. I grew up with these cars back in the 1960s and have a lot of knowledge on them. Most of the mechanics who worked on them are long gone.
Thanks for the info! Definitely going to check out the top end
The Y block was also bad to turn the cam bearings and hinder oil flow
@RepentandbelieveinJesusChrist0amen
@RepentandbelieveinJesusChrist0 Sounds a bit drastic, he only did not check rocker shaft oil supply.
1960 wing. Sharp car
my folks had a '61 Sunliner...I remember that car quite fondly. The car my father taught me how to change and set points. 352. Very unique style
Burton Antique Auto Parts is the only company reproducing 1960 Ford stainless trim. They reproduce the rocker panels.
Thanks!
Tenacious effort put forth in getting this car to run.The Ford stylists came out with a fine looking car that year. The roof line looks especially good as does the entire back of the car'. I hope you can continue to make progress with it.
New to your channel . My Dad worked at the Ford Dallas plant for 40 years till closing in 1972 . Probably saw this gem of a car roll down the assembly line.
I had a 60 like that in 73 I also had a 59 f100 with the 292 great motor
Like the Indian in "The Outlaw Josey Wales" would say
"Endeavor to preserve" . Nice job !
Persevere...typo above
Treasure..a real boat on wheels..A great find and a classic we don't see very often..good luck and thanks for saving history
Great find! I had one it took myself and my friend to Langley BC . to go to college circa 1973 fix and cruise
One of my favorite Fords. The 292 and 312 were the y block Fords I think.
And the cubic inches in order were 239, 256 and 272 before the 292 and 312.
Great videos. Ithink it is great you and your kids working on old vehicles together. Keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍
my uncle bought a new Starliner in 1960, black with white roof, red interior, 292, 3 speed column shift with overdrive
Terrific video and car…
You need to remember to put part #1 in the description.😊
I am originally from Ada, OK but lived in Missouri for several decades. We would drive down I-44 and go south at Stroud. Still going south, past the I-40 junction is the town of Seminole. For at least a decade, on the south end of Seminole was a storage lot with metal fencing and a metal gate. It was chocked full of 1960 Fords. No other year or brand. I often wonder where they went. That was a one year unique style as you know. My Uncle had a new one that I still recall in the mid 60s. Look forward to seeing this one cleaned up and on the road. It is definitely worth it as it seems to be pretty much rust free.
Love this project car. Your bright back to life it could be amazing
Awesome always cool stuff always thanks
Congrats on 1 million subscribers
what a GEM!
I love the Hillbilly compression tester.
What an awesome Shop you have. Great Car that’s worthy of Love. Great Video. I did Subscribe.
Beautiful car
LOL , I learned to drive on a car like that. Bot a Starliner but a '60 Ford 3 speed.!
If you pull the rockers off then tap on the valves to make sure there well seated, and pressurize each cylinder with a spark plug adapter to air line.
congrats on the 1M
Nice work!
As always. Nice video
Bought mine with same paint and interior for $35 from a local car lot in 1969 when I was 17 years old. It was gorgeous !!! Mine was automatic.Tom in Idaho
I had to pay a little more than that lol
WTG! Oldie but goodie. :)
Instant Subscribe! Quality hosting.
coolest car i've ever seen!!!
Just went to EBAY, looking of the rocker molding... They have some NOS at ... Ready for this... Just about $700 WOW!
But im sure you will find some out there
Nice ride! Mike
$$$
As always great american good old fun
Absolutely a nice car
iam new on your channel i really like the content and cant wait to see the starliner on the road
Well I looked everywhere and I could not find any merch for sale. I thought for sure you would have a "HEYDAD?" shirt or hat for sale
We will be opening the store soon!
You really need to get more info on the overdrive workings! The only thing the cable does is to disable the overdrive and make the transmission work as any standard 3 speed in any car! Due to my typing abilities I will offer this advice, get a '64 ford shop manual and it has a section on the overdrive trans! It will be a great help in how it works, how to check it's operation, an electrical diagram and etc. You may just have a defective solenoid that can be repaired
rock in back and forth in high gear with OD cable pulled out
Good luck taking out the distributor in Ford's is a mother
That pipe for the choke is called the choke stove-pipe & incorporated in the Manifold is called The Choke Stove. Those 292's were a dependable engine back then. PS, I had a 63 Galaxie that only had 25 to 35 psi in compression & filled cylinders up with oil & got it to fire up.
Wow! I can’t believe it fired
I have a photograph of me in diapers sitting on the hood of my dad's Starliner in 1961. FWIW, I was giving the Ronnie James Dio horn sign. LOL
Great you got it to run 🎉
Wow o huda! Best classic/ ford evö!!
always a good idea to spray some WD40 on the valve stems of a motor thats been dormant for years, assures no stickyness that could cause piston to valve contact... I've seen it where we have had to lube them, and whack them with a mallet as they would stick a little from varnish, takes a few cycles but eventually they free up.
spoke too soon, just got to 13:40 :D
my first car was a 60 sunliner with a 352 4-barrel. very fast . my commuter car from Shelton and McCleary WA. White with white convertible top. fun car to drive.
22:27 You're already way ahead of ol' Mortske! Every time he's gotten a Y-Block it's had no compression....
Nice project love to see more
Marvel’s mystery oil works great
When I watched this, it will least three hours ago
When i run into the same situation i use the highest Octane pump gas i can get No Alcohol and mix it with 2 cycle oil and you will not have the plug fowling issue. The 2 cycle oil will raise the coplression and help break the rings free.
That is a great idea. I was using 91 with 2 stroke oil
Hook 24 volts up to the starter for short bursts but fast spins run everything else on 12 volt
Got found son a Chevy nomad black white color Big block,427 Holly duly pump carb, four on floor, chrome rims, great sound Bluetooth FM radio.Jack super hotrod show car truck shows.
cool. just subscribed. hope the old Ford runs
My uncle had one in tan
Marvel mystery oil ,brake cleaner,...
Find a old Chilton manual that has a section on borg warner overdrive.
If I remember right they made them all.
It has a governor to set the overdrive with a electric ignition kill so it can go into overdrive.
Had one in a 57 chevy that would get 21 mpg on the road.
Hopefully I can find a manual
Not bad
Ran when parked. Sure it did. They all do.
The back kinda looks like a old Chevy impala
Once ya get the O/D cable freedup, ...with a little bit of practice, should be able to drive it as a SIX SPEED. Imagine a splitter in a truck. My father had an early 50s Victoria with a later drive train to include the overdrive. No real benifit to using six, cep't maybe when climbing a hill with a loaded trailer...but for shits and giggles, it's there.
Thanks! I can’t wait to try it
Bongo Solo😂😂😂
Glad to see you somewhere - will you be doing a tour of your new place
This is our same shop
Sounds like you were playing the xiliphone 😅
Had s 60 galaxy. It had ,,6 cylinders 3
Speed on the tree with overdrive. Black with white top. Lacked power for a car that heavy . My brother has a running two door 61 with a 352. It's for sale.
Some overdrive have an electric motor to shift into OD.
I have a nice used "S" for your trunk script. Can I send it to the PO box listed on your TH-cam page?
That would be awesome! Yes that is our PO Box
The 1960 and 1961 Starliners were never plentiful. The 1960 is very rare. Most have the 352 Y block in them.
BTW, Those solid lifters is what I think are actually called tappets IIRC. I know the old timers used to refer to lifters as tappets. I can see how those being solid like they are, not even a spring or any internal componets. Farily certain they're actually tappets instead of lifters. Of course we know the same exaxt function. One of those potato patotoh., Some new oil, A pint of Marvels Mystery Oil, and let it get hot. Some of those rings will come back to life somewhat and raise the compression a bit. If thermostats are cheap find a 195 degree thermostat for it so it'll get good and hot. I'd also try to change the oil with some HD30 NON DETERGENT if you can find it these days. All those suggestions will work best at trying to get the rings first of all, unstuck and freed up so they can do their job, and secondly, have them compression rings scrubbing the cylinder walls a bit better and possibly re-seat them. I'd get it running just to take it for a short spin just to say you did. Then I'd be yanking it out for a re-ring kit. Just rings, bearings, timing chain set, new oil pump and gaskets. Just take the heads apart, let Jack the Apprentice Mechanic clean them heads up real good, then, lap the valves and new seals and reassemble. Do the old concrete scrub or belt sander for a make shift re surfacing to make sure they're true as possible and all the old gasket material removed. Carb tear down, clean and new kit in it. After that, it'll run close to like a brand new one and be good for a Sunday drive cruise mobile for about 60-80,000 miles. You'll have to find some zinc additive or something for those heads. I'd imagine they're not hardened seats and was intended to run on leaded gas which we can't get these days. I like it, especially the powertrain. I"d kind of expect a Starliner to have been an auto trans. Of course, we're talking 1960 so.... If it did have an auto trans, pretty sure it would have just been a 2 speed. CruiseOMatic or something like that is what I believe Ford and Mercury did back in those days. Very Cool vehicle.,
Thanks for the info. I actually priced the re-ring kit and they aren’t too expensive
🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙👍
Ther he is hi jack
W
Do you have the car in neutral
Yes
First hey guys
CJ is a great little guy reminds me of my grandson. he's bright and observant. he knew what you were doing with the compression test and immediately got a system going where you didn't have to tell him "when" he started and stopped at the right moments. great moments with your boys they'll treasure
Mr Waddell, in a world simmering with craziness, it is good that we have people like you, Jack, and AJ providing us with such interesting and endearing videos. As usual, a great video from a great channel.
Owned that same year and model with red interior when I joined the USAF in 1971. Drove to my first assignment at Dover DE only to have it stolen a few months later. It was a beautiful high gloss black with chrome wheels! I would still own it today if it hadn’t been stolen.
Cool. Thanks for your service. I was in the Airforce also.
That awesome obtw thank you for your service..... it is men and women like yourself that allow every American to sleep in peace....... thanks again for your service....
Thank you for your service. I bet the red interior looked amazing
I learned to drive in my mom's 60 Fairlane. I think it is one of the best looking Fords ever.
Overdrive. It is operated electrically. When you shift int 3rd and want OD, you let off the gas and it shifts. The cable is to disable OD. Push forward for electric OD. Pull out to disable.
Y-Blocks are pretty great! Don't get talked into switching to something else, Ys can be very quick and they have an exhaust note like no other engine. Very much worth the eventual rebuild, built one at the shop and it is surprisingly fast and reliable especially with a good balance job. You may have issues getting oil to the top end- oil comes from the middle cam bearing and the bores can get sludgy. Both rocker shafts can be easily modified to get more pressure. When you rebuild, Iskendarian has a peach of a cam for the Y-Block, and there are new lifters out there. Do your research and have a ball, it is absolutely worth loving up this particular engine.
Thanks! I definitely want to keep it
U made my day! Neighbors had a 60 Starliner...what a nerdy girl, they had when I was only in Kindergarten. STILL a Ford Girl at 68. Remember those seats flipping when hit from a tar truck from behind. RIP for that one - they certainly are rare!
What a gorgeous looking car and I hope she scrubs up well. Very well done on getting it running and I cant wait to see it being driven.
My Dad had a Galaxie when I was a kid. ( I'm old) The Starliner is a beauty!
Nice ole Ford!, Always liked the Starliner!, My 1959 Ford Fairlane had the same powertrain when I got it minus the overdrive, The 292 was blown and I ended up putting a 390 with a C6 in it that came out of my 1976 F100!
When I was a kid my Uncle John had one of those Starliners. Light kind of mint green. Always thought it was a great looking car
You did it the correct way and took your time , one step after another!
Nice find and I look forward to seeing more videos on the car and what you guys end up doing with it. I love watching your videos because it brings back memories of the days my dad and I worked on my old cars and I used the same phrase Jack uses ( Hey Day ). My dad taught me a lot about about mechanics. You and your sons have something very special that’s not seen much these days and I hope you can hang on to that special relationship forever. Looking forward to seeing your future videos.
May want to check out cold war motors , another cool ch. !
Man, I'm jealous I've always wanted a 1960 Starliner ! You got a new follower here. I can't wait to see your next video on this car! Great video!
there great cars. im glad im restoring 7 of them and the sunliner
The sound of that starter cranking that engine over takes me back about 60 years.
Almost one million subscribers, very well deserved.
thank you
Thanks!
A little about the overdrive... The cable is only for disengaging the overdrive so it won't operate, for example if you are in the mountains & you don't want it to engage. To engage the overdrive you let up off the accelerator about 35 mph or above. You will feel a slight lurch, then when placing your foot back on the accelerator you should be able to tell you have slower rpms. If you need to pass someone with maximum performance, press the accelerator to the floor and the O/D will disengage for maximum performance. Afterwards let your foot back off the gas and it will re-engage. It is operated by a kickdown switch under the accelerator, a relay on the firewall, & a Borg-Warner overdrive unit mounted on the back of the transmission. There is also a solenoid and a governor on the Borg Warner unit. I had a 56 Ford with overdrive. Loved it! I enjoy the channel and hope this info helps!
Thanks Jim! I was wondering what that firewall switch was
I'm going to be happy for you guys when you hit 1 million subscribers
We are close!
Pops : “Ahh no starter”
Little man : “we’ll have to work on that”
Golden memories forsure👍🏼
I got three boys in their early 20s who never helped me with cars as much as AJ did in this video LOL
The Starliner was manufacture for nascar. The 60 and 61 Galaxie had an air lift at high speed. The Starliner had that sloping back window and a little difference in front end length to keep it aerodynamic. They produced just over 500 each year.so it could be a production model to run as a stock car. I owned a 60 with a 390 special order car w/ auto transmission. Mine was red with a white top and was 1 owner car by a lady in Galveston Texas It was her dead husbands car.
Take the broken door glass out, carefully remove all the metal, and bring it to a glass shop that has old guys working in it. They'll be able to cut you some new laminated glass. Then get some urethane from them that they use on auto glass, and reassemble it yourself. Take your time, take pictures as you disassemble, and you'll be fine. Don't pay the glass shop, cuz you'll pay fat money for something you can do yourself.
I've never been a fan of 60 Fords in general. However, I must say that Starliner in black looks awesome.
Nice find awesome video😊
Sleeper dude knows more about this car
That Starliner is nice. Definitely worth saving. I'm looking forward to seeing more of it!
Outstanding Video.....Technically the "FE" was a "Y-Block" too. So was the "B" and "RB" Chryslers. Y blocks are an engine design where the blocks side or pan rails extend down past the centerline of the crankshaft. For instance, a Small Block Chevy is not a Y Block....haha KUTGW
My first car was a 1960 ford, bottom of the line with no accessories except a heater . I Have always liked this one year design👍🎩
In great shape Kent. Can't wait till you show cleaned up. Good find
Awesome video Kent. Thanks for sharing, I have a question for you or anyone in the chat who knows about cars/trucks what’s the best way too clean a motor for a 90”s vehicle and a 2000”s vehicle without messing anything up. Appreciate any info everyone have a blessed day. Thanks again in advance
