- Will this 1960 Ford starliner run after 54 years of setting abandoned in a field it was running when parked only reason it was parked was because the owner got a new 67 Chevy station wagon

Imagine all the millions of cars in junk yards that were still road worthy but were crushed just because people wanted new ones.
If the car is road worthy and worth more money than the parts and scrap. The yard will sell it as a used car.

Cars recycled for raw materials (mainly steel, aluminium, and copper) are still a whole lot better than cars sitting and rusting under some oak tree out there for decades.

@@kennethsouthard6042 it keeps me up at night to think of all the 1 in 500 and million dollar classic American cars that have been crushed or turned to dust because people just didn’t care back then. They saw those cars just like how we see a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu today
I prefer the headcam because the pov style really lets you see inside. I am willing to bet it is also easier to deal with instead of constantly mess around with a tripod while you’re trying to work

Hi greetings from Scotland UK love your channel, and your accent is wonderful, theres no old cars lying around over here they all got crushed for money years ago, plus the damp climate rusted most out I have 2 old Volkswagens from the sixties that I work on,American cars are rare ,love your enthusiasm keep up the good work.

First car i ever owned was a 65 Galaxy with that same engine - 352/390. Got it in 71 with just shy of 100k miles. My dad and I spent thar summer rebuilding the engine. Some of the best memories I have of my dad. Thanks for the nostalgia.

This would be a great engine to save, too bad the car is so full of rust. On a positive note, we all know that any items of trim that is in savable condition is in high demand for this particular model. Take your time when you think about removing any parts as just about every part on this car is very hard to find and are worth $$$. Even the wiring harnesses so long as it`s not full of mouse bites or other type of damage would sell for sure. This is one of my favorite Fords for sure.

Brings back old times. The cars I work on now days (my own) are so crowded you cant get your tools to most parts without pulling the engine in its entirety.
I've always wondered(besides some efficiency) why they made the engine bay so tiny and unworkable! I mean the less area only helps aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and speed/drag so much! Like id rather have a little more drag and not have to use a 2 foot long extension on a ratchet to get to the starter thats 4 unches below the hood and have to go in from the bottom! There is a reason all the old timers say they don't make thing as good as/like they used to. Its because its true!!! Plus everything is plastic now and shatters into confetti when u get in a fender bender going 4mph lol. Its kinda sad. That's why I prefer built or rebuilt older vehicles vs most moder stuff. In rare cases do I prefer a new 1 and if I do its prob a $100,000+ car i can't afford lol

Watching your videos make me feel great about my 1962 ford fairlane.. I checked gas.. it was gettin gas.. I checked spark plugs.. no spark.. found out one of my coil wires was grounding to the valve cover so I just fixed er up.. then cleaned all the plugs.. sanded the points and got here to fire without a carb. Wouldnt fire with a carb so I did a rebuild and now she runs like new. I also replaced my positive and negative wires as well as motors ground. I even managed to get the old horn working.
A tip: Use a deep walled socket and keep constant hand pressure on it and hit to top of the socket with a hammer to dislodge the valve keepers. Keeping hand tension on the socket it just to keep the keepers from flying all over. They make a tool similar to a socket with magnets already in it for this purpose, but a socket has always worked fine for me. A LOT quicker way to disassemble a cylinder head. Thanks for the video on this older classic. Good luck with it!

The 1960 352, with a 4 barrel was most likely a 300 HP, there was not a 390HP 352, it was a 360 HP and had special air cleaner and other Hipo parts. Your 352 looks to be a standard 4 barrel model. I did notice the side glass and window trim appeared to be in pretty good condition.

Yup as an automotive machinist I can confirm this.
I have a 60 thunderbird with the 352, no difference between mine and this one. The 352 360hp had special exhaust manifolds and a aluminum intake. But the 300hp 352 is still a runner. JS
I was told there were two versions of the 352. The thunderbird and the police interceptor the only other engine in the 60 ford was in a ford fairlane and it had a 292 but I have to confess I never seen one with a 4 barrel carburetor

These old Starliners only existed for 2 years-1960 and 1961. The top performance engine in 1960 was the 352 Thunderbird V8 high performance engine with a high flow 4 bbl, solid lifters and 360 bhp gross. 1961's top engine was the Thunderbird 390 V8 with 3x2 bbl, solid valve lifters and 401 bhp.
The 61 was better looking, IMO. Didnt have the odd grille or wonky taillights. And the bigger motor too.
I had a 61 with the 406 with the castiron headers 3 speed with over drive
There was a little over 78000 1960 made and over 27000 of the 1961 starliners made but you see way more 61 than 60 I owed a 61 black z code automatic probably 390 300hp or 330hp but was replaced with 428cj and a top loader 4 speed had it 7 years sold about 14 years ago miss driving it to best looking car ever made.
Ford Motor Company introduced its new power plant upgrades midyear. 1961 midyear came the 390 4bbl 375bhp and solid lifter 390 3x2bbl 401 bump top engines. In midyear 1962 was when FOMOCO introduced the 406cid power plant as 385bhp in 4bbl configuration and 405 bhp in 3x2bbl solid lifter form. In 1963 midyear was Ford's introduction of the famed 427cid in 4bbl form at 410bhp and in 2x4bbl configuration at 425bhp with solid lifters. The midyear introduction of these power plants did coincided with NASCAR time requirements to allow Ford to use these raw racing power plants on the NASCAR circuit the following year if put into production in the prior year.

Had one just like yours in 1972. Strong runner, but the valve train leaves something to be desired because of oil flow, outside Oiler thru the valve covers fixed that. Also the stock 91/2 inch clutch, that 352 has enough horse to tear it up. Truck clutch and pressure plate fixed mine. Damn thing ran 16s at the strip, doesn’t sound like much now, but the damn thing weighed 4000 lb. good drivin street car. Engine put out about 270 hp with headers open.

I'm not even a Ford man, but between these and 62-64 T bird I'd love to restore one.
HotRod Ray , yes sir, got the idea from a 1955 ford pickup with a 292 in it that my dad had. The whole deal was homemade out of copper tubing ran from side of the block where the oil pressure guage was tapped in the block, thru the valve covers. Fixed a 348 Chevy truck motor the same way.

I watch all your vidios, but I just had to watch this one. I drove a 1960 Ford in high school that I put together with junkyard parts. It had the 312 Y block with a 3 speed stick. I loved that car.

My Dad had one of these way back in 1970. Was a great car, and very fast. Then the engine went bad and he sold it to a friend because he didn't want to drive it all the way from Kansas to South Dakota. The friend ended up driving it up to South Dakota and used 12 quarts of oil in the 450 mile trip. He eventually sold it to a junk yard.
What do you do with these cars once you get them running?

Greatly needs to be restored. Ford only made a Starliner '60-'61.
That relay on the firewall is for the overdrive three on the column transmission. I had one of these cars for 30 years. It needed power steering and power brakes. Was a solid car.

Here is an old trick to get the valve spring retainers out. Take an old deep 1/2 inch socket. Place over top of the valve stem. Smack the socket with a hammer so that the socket pushes down the retainer plate but not the valve stem. Usually the retainers will pop out
Also both the headcam and the tripod are good just depends on what’s going on

Couple of things you might want to check if you haven't already. It might be a 332 ci. That was more popular for that year and it might actually be a 4 speed on the column as they did make them.
332s were only installed in ‘58 & ‘59 Fords. Both 332 and 352 were introduced in 1958, but the 332 was dropped for 1960. What he has under that hood is a very rare version of the 352. Solid lifters. 360 hp. And this souped up version was only available in 1960. And I’ve never heard of a four speed on the column. Unless you consider a three speed on the column with overdrive.

The 1960 is the rarest of all Galaxies, but that one may be too far gone. You may search worldwide and not find the rear glass. I've been looking for a 60 or 61 in decent condition and there aren't any in any condition.
Restore it, bud. It's just a hood, some glass and a LOT of tricky body work, lol. I like the head cam best, btw. I have faith cars in this bad of shape could look like new again, i've seen it.

I think you way overstated the HP of that motor. I believe the single 4V was around 300 HP. There was a super rare 6 pack version that was around 350-360hp. I used to run a lot of FE's when I was younger & you needed something really special to get close to 400 HP. To get 400 HP stock you had to wait a few more years to get a tri powered 390 & there weren't a whole lot of them. The FE motors were really heavy & it took a lot of money to get them to make decent HP. Still, a 390 4V - 4 speed Mustang was about the craziest thing a high schooler could drive back around 1980. Ahhhhhh..... memories. Have fun. Enjoy.

Some of the 1960 352's came with solid lifters and a 4 v carb which was factory rated 360 HP. I had one. It's always been said that the heads on those engines were the best FE heads ever made for the FE blocks.

@@DanKirchner5150 I think the y block came several different ways. 352, 360, 390, 406, 427 and 428. I had a 1970 F250 Camper Special which had the 360 engine. I remember one very cold night I worked 3rd shift and when i pulled out of the parking lot around 7:00 am to head home, the engine started ticking. It was windy and way below zero that night. I pulled into the drug store right next door to where I worked, opened the hood and saw oil everywhere. The filter case had split at the seam and was gone. That is where the oil went. Luckily, the store had a small area where they kept some auto parts and oil. They had a PH 8 filter and oil. It was what got me home that cold night. At one of our local auto parts stores, I was talking to the guy at the counter about the filter coming apart at the seam. He had a Fram book and in their tests, it takes 250 lbs to deform the end of the case and 300 lbs to break the seam. I ended up putting a new oil pump in because the pump has the relief valve built in the pump. The valve must have stuck on that cold night. I still have my 1968 Ford Torino. It has the 390 4 speed which was rated 335 HP. I have rebuilt the engine 3 times. The last time I had the machine shop get me a Bullitt Cam with the 427 grind and solid lifters. Had to get adjustable rockers and valve springs to go with the cam. The difference in performance is mid range, 2000 to 5500 RPM. I am very lucky to have kept the car. I almost never talk to anyone at car shows that can say their car is a one owner. I can!
The virtues of the FE, were mainly about torque, because if the meaty crank.They are quirky but neat engines.
352 hi-po engines were 360 hp, NOT 390 hp.
and if a standard 352 4bbl motor they were 300 horse and loved to overheat that is why the surge tank is there..
@@rorymunroe3771 That's not the reason for the surge tank. The radiator was lower than the top of the engine, thus tank was there as an expansion tank. Such tanks began in '58 when the FE engines were first installed.

I think with a sledgehammer and a 2x4 the rear quarter panels should iron out
1960 Fords were a much nicer design than the 1959, and the Sunliner was especially nice with its clean roof design. This one looks too far gone unless you are a real pro with a big checkbook, but it still has a lot of rare and useful trim parts.

That's ridiculous, this wreck is WAAAAAY beyond saving. It's strictly a parts car. Chrome, glass, engine and trans cores, rear axle, etc.

You could put almost unlimited money into a 68 Charger, 69 Camaro, or fastback Mustang, and get it back at auction (maybe), but a 60 Starliner? Only if George Poteet didn't already have one.
