    I work in pro AV and we've been using NDI for awhile. Lots of broadcast style cameras and switchers support NDI now as well. The is the first more pro-sumer hardware device that I've seen added it in. It actually fixes the major reason that I bought the Rodecaster Pro II over the Mackie DLZ Creator for my home use, which is that I've got two computers on my desk, and with the RCPII it has two USB ports, so I can run USB to both machines and have them come in (and out) as separate devices. The DLZ couldn't do that until now. Your secondary machine could just be setup with NDI in and out as your primary audio devices and you could control everything off the DLZ. Pretty sweet!

      You're right, it's huge in video. It's so cool to see it come to consumer and creator focused audio devices. I hope it's the first of many.

      I have a Q-SYS Core doing everything for my streaming setup. I'm about to integrate a Yamaha DM3-D into my setup so I have Dante feeding into the setup. NDI Is great but I like to take advantage of more robust AVoverIP solutions since NDI has a lot of latency compared to a solution from ZeeVee which zero frame loss. Thankfully ZeeVee has Dante options that can live on their 10G AVoverIp network. Thankfully I don't spec any Birddog equipment because I can't tell you how many birddog NDI devices I have in service right now...just sad.

    Looks like NDI is 50-75ms latency, which is VERY noticeable. Dante or AES67 does the same, but at 2ms latency. NDI is typically sending video and audio together, so the latency isn't a big deal usually, but once you separate video and audio with it, you will definitely see some lip sync issues.

    • @xzibit8614
      @xzibit8614 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      With NDI | HX yes. NDI (no video) has Dante like latency when used audio only, or NDI | HX3 when used alongside 4k60fps video

    • @seanp2k617
      @seanp2k617 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dante also requires dedicated hardware codecs, so it’s faster / more stable, but can’t be added after-sale unless it’s via a card slot or as a separate piece of outboard gear. I’m not sure if AES67 requires dedicated hardware or if it can be implemented all in software as codecs.

    • @lsdave
      @lsdave 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@seanp2k617 Dante does not require dedicated hardware. There is software based Dante, like their Dante virtual sound card for PCs as well as software based Dante in Q-SYS hardware.

    • @harrybilney9096
      @harrybilney9096 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not actually true. Dante can be added via software although you will experience more latency due to the lack or hardware encoding. The minimum latency for Dante Virtual Soundcard (as an example) is 4ms.@@seanp2k617

    • @seanp2k617
      @seanp2k617 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      they prob don’t want to pay to license NDI or Dante. Could still do AVB, I believe that one is royalty-free. It’s a niche feature that’s only relevant for a smaller amount of folks, and skews higher-end. These are prosumer devices for the most part. Pro production teams are going to use something like an Aaton, Zaxcom, Sound Devices, or Nagra recorder, and for installed or even touring sound, Dante is the standard.
      Another important thing to note: NDI is a software implementation while Dante has a dedicated chip. It’s also going to be less latency and potentially more stable, or at least more consistent, as it’s basically a small computer just dedicated to the task of converting to and from Dante. Dante also wants to be the only thing on a network, whereas NDI / AES67 can coexist. Venues with millions invested in Dante infra aren’t switching to NDI any time soon for audio, but it’s a nice option to have for stuff like they show in this video and I hope it gets more popular, esp given Dante’s recent issues with supply chain shortages and long time to market for stuff like this.

    How good are the preamps compared to an audio interface set up such as an 18i8 or similar? I wonder if it's worth the shot, dropping $800 and this being able to replace the audio recording for Streaming, TH-cam and Music Production.
    I know the biggest thing in this new set up is mainly the NDI feature, and it's a great new thing for Audio Mixers, but with all those features in the DLZ at that price tag I wonder if they had to cheap out on other components.

    Dude! That is cool. Big question? You talked about sending audio through the wan from one location to another. Can one person on OBS output to NDI and then send it to someone else through through the WAN so it can be used as a vid/audio source? That wayn having if you did a podcast with someone else they can use OBS on thei r subide. You use OBS on yourside and capture or live stream it to youtube. IS that possible? That way we would connect two OBSs remotely where the connecting is being done externally through NDS. IS that possible or am I draming?

    Hi Senpai, Just checking if u still recommend this mackie DLZ and if ur happy with the firmware updates since u bought it? Im intending to use in it in a church setting where there are only 3 mics used and am sending signal into an atem extreme. I am conscious that it doesnt have remote app control but I dont think thats the end of the world ad I will have the mixer next to me upstairs in the gallery at the back of the chapel where I have my two cameras and another underneath staircase. Thats for the great video. Im also interested in ndi but its just something I migt not use if I cant also control levels remotely. I forgot to say that someone else controls the in house pa mix so this mixer would only be for my recording. Im not live streaming but rather using atem as a quicker way to edit videos in post using Premiere Pro.

    This may be stupid question but can I use two separate PC's (a Windows PC and a MAC), have 1 connected via USB C and the other via NDI and be able to use the one mic across both PC's or is NDI output only? Use case is the Mac is used for work (mic needed for Teams) and the PC is for gaming. Would like to use the DLZ across both devices. This can be done with the Rodecaster Pro 2 but nor really sure what the full extent of NDI is.

    Interesting choice by Mackie to use NDI over something like Dante or AES. Don't get me wrong, NDI is amazing in the right use case and with the right infrastructure but also can introduce a fair bit of latency if not installed correctly. Obviously audio streams take less bandwidth than video streams so the latency with using this in a network with wired devices is probably not that noticeable. However if you start introducing wireless devices and/or devices in other locations as mentioned in the video, your latency will drastically increase. Also NDI doesn't really support any clocking, not a huge deal in this use case as a streamer but could become problematic in other use cases.

    NDI is great! I've been using it to share cameras, scenes, audio, etc between PC's for a few years now. Replaced the capture card awhile back with NDI and never looked back. Now experimenting with a triple PC streaming/recording setup to offload functions. Video feeds powered by NDI.
    I've also recently been using Dante audio with their virtual sound card software, as well as an add-in card on the Behringer X32 rack mixer. Semi-expensive setup, but the audio routing capabilities over the network are amazing. Just doesn't coexist nicely with NDI - so have to separate them out.
    Sorry - bit of a rabbit-hole there - but fun to geek out on this stuff!

    Is this similar to the Dante ecosystem used in music studios? Also I’m not 100 percent sure but couldn’t this be similarly achieved with something like the Tascam model 12 16 & 24 series through the dedicated Bluetooth channel either by using your other devices Bluetooth signal with an audio TX/ RX transmitter?
    I send things like this as well as MIDI from my iPad to my MPC using Ableton Sync and either my Model 12 or a small audio transmitter.
    Also curious why I don’t see many people utilizing MIDI controllers more often in their setups to map things to OBS for streaming an camera change purposes

      Its very similar but Dante has more flexibility and is much more stable. I prefer Dante and probably would have used that in this use case. DLZ I don't believe supports Dante so you would need a control surface that did if you really wanted a physical controller but its not needed can be done virtually.

    I though it will be Dante or Madi, NDI is great too, but for Audio, NDI is just a little kid, the big guy was Dante AVB MADI, or even the obsolete one by Roland call REAC, NDI is primary design for video, but like this scenario, it's better then nothing, and it is the first to have network audio in this newly market "podcast mixer", but really love to see if they can implement others professional audio networking protocol.

    Is it just the main output that can utilize NDI? Any NDI inputs? You also can't freely assign specific inputs to specific sliders right?
    Rode's Procaster series still seems to be the one for dual PC setups, especially if you need your mic to go two both PCs. Rode hinted at bringing networked audio to the Procaster mixers at a tech show a few months back. They also said the next update will bring more virtual channels to the USB connections. I feel like that thing would be busted with more USB in/outs & a few NDI/Dante in/outs.

      They hinted networked audio via Ethernet to me at its release, back in June 2022. 1 year, 3 months later it’s not there.

    I'm going to have to look into this cuz up until now I've been using a tascam digital mixer because I want physical sliders for my voice the music my switch my desk speakers another microphone etc and I want those physical sliders to be hardware controlling not software so there's no chance I reach for it and they don't work

    I'm having one of those moments where I've used NDI for the past 2 years and simply cannot figure out how you setup a system level audio output to an NDI stream. The link you provided is just for the OBS plugin. What ninja skills are you using to get this direct audio output on both Mac OS and Windows?
    Thanks for your awesome content, by the way. I deeply admire your work.

    • @Senpai
      @Senpai  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I found it a lot simpler on Mac, where I could just use NDI Output as my system level output. Windows isn't quite as user friendly and I could only use it as an OBS plugin, though they do have the whole NDI tools suite. See if there is a solution in there for you.

      @jnpetersen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Senpai I have the sam question though. You send it to your other machine, but are you running OBS or something constantly to receive the audio to play out the speakers or are you utilizing something like the NDI Video Monitor, so some other tool to make it play out your speakers on the other machine? That's where I'm confused. I can get the same thing to work with keeping an app open, just wanted to see how you were doing this.

    You should do a video on vivitar's line of streaming gear, idk if its walmart specific, but i've only seen it there. they have so much gear if ur on a budget- capture cards, mics, keylights its actually insane. it would be really cool to see how good of stream quality you could get from just walmart. would also make a really good title haha.

    What Microphone arm are you using on that desk? not the mic itself, you included that in your streaming kits, JUST the arm, as it's not present on any of the htree you have linked, ANd I've been looking for a low profile one like that to use with my Podmic (which I've been using since just after release, and will swear by to this day, but it's a heavy boy and broke the only Blue high arm I used to use.) so i need a replacement better attuned to the space i actually have.

    For a tech savvy chap with all the gear what amazes you makes me feel old. With my 2009 iMac that’s still grinding away as my main studio machine hammering out 4k stuff to this day. Anyway regarding. Perfection a pair of NS-10 are nothing compared to HS8. But the KEF LS50 METa makes a fair compromise as a pair of monitors and they are not but the specs say otherwise. Power then through a PS audio amp maybe an Audioquest dragonfly as is a necessity even if your not into sound and it’s not too bad anyway great vid. Good to see you involving the family I too am a bit Bandit Heeler when it comes to the future generation, that if we might be lucky, will be changing our nappies when we get older

      I use NDI at my church building to run multiple cameras and We have a setup where 1 camera receives the audio for that specific room and the other cameras don't have any audio source. In OBS I can grab just the audio source from that camera over NDI to use with whatever camera I'm displaying in OBS. There is no delay or offset from the video, has worked great for our live broadcasts.

    Live audio engineer here who regularly uses Dante, Audinates audio over IP, so the concept is nothing new to me. But this is still fantastic. It’s streamlined your setup and made everything much more efficient. Fantastic stuff!

      Do you have any tips for a home studio setup where I want to send USB midi for longer than 3m? I have a table with my USB gear (synths, drum machines, interface etc.) on one side of my room and my desk on the other. I have a mic and other equipment at my desk and I want to bring my interface over to my desk too, while still keeping it linked with the midi gear on the other side of my room.

  • @TheSakuraGumiLTD
    @TheSakuraGumiLTD 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My thought is I could use this to not only stream what I am doing in music production but when doing reviews so instead of using a digital coaxial cable to another interface but do not have the control this has and this NDI might mean I can streamline this process, have more control and also move a setup around the house.
    Not idea if this is possible to get audio from another interface as this was not answered and maybe this the failing and silence usually follows such questions as my last one did.
