Some of these professionals on TH-cam utilize some complex music vernacular when talking about improvement on the saxophone, I'm glad that there's Saxologic to explain these things more efficiently and a lot more simply
I’ve been playing sax for about 6 years now and I’m a highschool student. I have been struggling lately with tonguing quickly. Part of me thinks that my tongue simply won’t move that fast. This video did help a bit though. Thanks!
I've been playing sax my whole life, and have never had a teacher explain as well as you do. It will take lots of practice on my end to stop hammer tonguing. Sincerely, thank you for this video!
I find it crazy that you're so young and yet so helpful to so many people. I mean, you're creating your own resources! You're so far ahead of most people who became music teachers. I'm almost in college and I can't even imagine doing this kind of stuff right now!
That is a strange .... compliment? ... comparison? ... metaphor? I would never compare one accomplished musician with another unless I had a point to make. Wonder what it was?
Thank you so much! I am a classical flautist learning saxophone and I could not figure out how to soften the articulation for the life of me! It was driving me crazy 😤
I have been struggling with the "thud" for months, since I started playing again after 20 years. I've done little more than work on embouchure and articulation, because I believe the rest of it is irrelevant until you get into good mouthpiece habits. Today I took your advice, and FINALLY I had the breakthrough I've been waiting for. I even started to do some double tonguing! I can't thank you enough.
Great video! I do a lot of single tonguing studies for my students in lessons and in masterclasses to teach crispness and build speed. Your book sounds similar to what I have students do, so I decided to purchase and will try to incorporate it into future masterclasses. I will make sure to shout out your page every time I present it. Thanks and keep it up!
Me trying to apply what you said at 1:16 Alto: I guess I can do that, no big deal... I could get used to this Soprano: Easy as shit! This horn was made for this Bari: Surprisingly not that difficult Tenor: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuu...
Tonguing staccato will always be the bane of my existence! It drives me batty cause I can never get it consistently no matter how much I damn practice x3
Im not a saxophone player but man from scatting like a shizo to tasty solos, my tongie is a machine gun. I wanna pick up this instrument now hahahahaha
Hey saxologic can you make a video about how to play and stay in tune. And what to aim for while trying to play in tune. Especially i couldn’t find sufficient information about the latter on the internet. Thanks in advance.
Can’t talk a lot about it because I do not play nearly well enough. But I came to the understanding that instead of thinking about consonants you should focus on the movement of the tongue. Because whenever you thing about a consonant you will default to moving a lot of stuff, which is not what you want and will kill your embouchure. So what you want is to gain full control over your tongue alone. So I suggest: First tongue without mouthpiece and air, try to move only the tongue and keep everything else relaxed. When that works well you can try to add air at different speeds, again without moving anything else and keeping relaxed. Then you can try to add accents and stuff.
My teacher once tried to teach me how to double and triple tounge but I never fully grasped it😂.But with this video and the tips you tell I’m starting to practice how fast I can single tounge and I think I’m gonna get to a point where I can tounge just as fast as somewon who can double or triple tounge 🥳
2:46 is the best frame of the whole video lol Jokes aside, this part - as silly as it looks - actually helped me tongue a whole lot better and faster because it gave me a good visual for what should be happening while I tongue.
Cool fact: I moved from clarinet to saxophone and played the sax with a clarinet embouchure for years before having to completely relearn how to play the instrument. In my experience, moving the mouthpiece angle down to where a clarinet would be is very unhelpful
Thanks, I actually wanted to start improving my tonging when u posted this lol. Also I know u play smash so you hyped for Min Min?(out of curiosity who's ur main?)
The highest I can get my single tonguing for a whole minute at 16th notes is 188-120. I can do 140 for a measure or 2. I play trumpet though, don’t know if it’s supposed to be different or not
Everytime I am practicing this I stumble at the 6th or 7th note, and I don't know how to build up speed/technique in that. I've seen this video so many times and I have also talked with my personal teacher about this but nothing feels like it's helping; how can I improve?
I have a problem. It’s with Tonguing. Whenever I play a note it has a “ta” sound. Witch is what I have been playing like for years. But I was wondering if that’s the right way to do it. Because whenever you play I never hear that sound. It sounds like there is no articulation and you are always slurring. Can someone help me out? The sound of Tonguing is much more prominent when I play and I can never get it as quiet as you.
4:12 you and that bird were spitting facts
That sounded like a big bird.

I wish my backyard was far enough from my neighbors to serenade the birdies without bothering them.

I appreciate it man! It all happened so fast and I’m just riding the wave haha
2:07 when you take that first sip of McDonald’s sprite 🤤
LOL wasn’t expecting that
Your alto sounds like Coltrane’s soprano
Whoa I haven’t heard that before lol
Come on it's not as bad
Rude
That is a strange .... compliment? ... comparison? ... metaphor?
I would never compare one accomplished musician with another unless I had a point to make. Wonder what it was?
Rob Kunkel I was merely observing the similarities in the tone.
Me, never having touched a saxophone in my life: ooooOOO Saxologic uploaded, time to go study up on my tonguing techniques
Thank you so much! I am a classical flautist learning saxophone and I could not figure out how to soften the articulation for the life of me! It was driving me crazy 😤
I was just practicing my tonguing when this popped up. Thanks!
TH-cam recommendations got u
Google knows what you’re doing
damn... i realized i still have a lot to learn
Thanks for this because nobody ever explains how to tounge better when they tell me to!

Why is it so peaceful with him playing music out in the garden with the birds lmao
Don’t have a saxophone, tried it on my guitar. It didn’t work. Unsubscribed.
Keep trying it. It will work. Your tongue has to develop a callus for your strings!!
Saxologic This reply hurt my tongue. Subscribed and then unsubscribed again.
Mac Muggo, No pain no gain
Jimmy hendrix would approve of tounging the guitar
This dude's like a miracle right when I started my "stecatto etude"

Thank you so much i just started playing sax 9 weeks ago for my middle school band and this helped me soooo much
Legend. Really trying for that crisp detached sound and this video pops up in my subscriptions
Me trying to apply what you said at 1:16
Alto: I guess I can do that, no big deal... I could get used to this
Soprano: Easy as shit! This horn was made for this
Bari: Surprisingly not that difficult

Lol i thought I was the only one who thought tonguing on the tenor sax is hard af
Lol I thought I was the only sax player that looked into clarinet techniques thanks for the video!
haha funny, darude sandstorm articulation
very cool
Well it's good to know that I have some more benefit from playing clarinet
Thanks for this, I'll practice scales with different articulations from now on.
I like you backyard btw
Those are the holiest first 20 seconds of a video that I have ever heard
Knowledgable likeable and a legend. Who wouldn't sub. Quality content as always Saxologic!
Tonguing staccato will always be the bane of my existence! It drives me batty cause I can never get it consistently no matter how much I damn practice x3
Don’t lose faith!
My daughter is about to be thrown away from Music school because of bad staccato

Your tone quality always amazes me!
Im not a saxophone player but man from scatting like a shizo to tasty solos, my tongie is a machine gun. I wanna pick up this instrument now hahahahaha

Voxman Selected Studies
@@Saxologic That was this years 9-10 district solo, something tells me the sophomores taking lessons with you drilled it into your head lol

Double tonguing is going to save you, I definitely wouldn't shun double/triple tonguing!
@@TanishkKhetan def double tounging my guy

Does this apply to classical tenor saxophone playing as well?
