so satisfying to see your tone + your flexibility of tone evolve from the early days of this channel when you were playing sick jazz lines but still sounding sorta classical. huge inspiration to me
im currently a middle school band saxophone player. i started in sixth grade and now its 8th. you are the soul reason why ive improved on sax. i cant say any less then thanks.
Love that you talked about drones in this video. Shedding long tones with a drone is the BEST WAY to improve your intonation. In addition to tuning the diatonic tones in the tonic key of the drone, I also practice tuning every pitch on the horn relative to the drone, so I essentially learned aurally how to tune all twelve tones in all twelve tonal centers. This helped me immensely, and because I strengthened my ears so much through this process, when I switched over to a vintage horn that many claim to have intonation issues, I had little to no issue with pitch because I just knew exactly what each note was supposed to sound like.
I love the way Nathan makes his tutorials extremely entertaining and helpful! Because they are not professionaly done, it makes you relate to the topic even more! keep up the classics!
I have literally been looking into this the past week and you release two videos (one from the Jazz Lessions channel) answering it. You are in my brain! Edited to say: thank you!
1:01 YESSSSSS BALKAN REP 🙌🏾 i remember one day i was looking up an articulation technique and a serb commented a link to a video n i went down a rabbit hole of serbian music it was awesome im still blown away by their articulation n trills
You are multiple gifted. You PLAY both styles professionally. AND you are a top rate TEACHER. Either of these attributes is rare in one person. You are blessed with both and have the work ethic and habits to go as far as possible in either or both fields. A doctorate might be the indelible mark on your resume that ensures making the most of all your beautiful strengths.
Hi saxologic, my name is Wyatt Landry, I’m a middle school alto saxophone player and I live in Louisiana. I just wanted to thank you for everything you do. You’ve inspired me to keep on practicing my saxophone ever since I got it. I started playing last September and I have gone to get many solos, duos, and trios in my band. Thanks you for everything you do and congrats for 200k subscribers. I will never forget how much you’ve inspired me and I even hope to meet you if I have a saxophone career.
The best exercise for my intonation was playing sop in my uni's concert band on a selmer series II, which is essentially an expensive kazoo (Also a great exercise is: play a note on piano - sing the note an octave higher - play the note (at the higher octave) - check against piano note. Repeat with different intervals)
So much great knowledge was presented here coupled with your natural awesomeness. You blew my socks clean off! This is a remarkable feat because, my shoes stayed where they were.
Another great exercise is to successfully play the chromatic scale down to low C starting on middle D. You leave the octave key engaged which means you really need to redirect your air. This works really well to create a sub tone.
Don't get discouraged if you don't hear quick results! No matter how much practice you put in, getting used to a change in tone or embouchure takes time. Consistent effort WILL pay off, and it's absolutely worth it.
The tongueing concept was a throw back for me back to highschool band camp days at UBC where the director would hammer down on that technique can confirm its the GOAT technique.
Mouthpiece remington is the move! It's actually something brass players are trained to do just because of how the mechanics of the instrument are. Never thought to try that on a sax mouthpiece!
bro not to d1ckride or anything, but I haven't tuned into your channel for a while and you are sounding really good! as an aspiring saxophonist it's a pleasure to listen to you play
Thanks so much for this, its so clear AND has a lot of room for me (an adult brand brand new sax player with previous musical experience) to experiment and find my own sound ❤ saving this to watch countless times
You always make me smile with your videos, also helped my playing with the tons of advice! You're a great person, thank you for inspiring me to play sax!!
Once I'm finished with 8th grade, I'm gonna be done with school band. I wanna switch over from classical to jazz, and im gonna use these video to help me with that
Thanks for those great exercices 👍 I feel like it is what I missed really since I switched from classical to jazz music with a wider mouthpiece. I moved from a lovely controlled sound to a ok klezmer - sometimes not really in-tune one And even if it sounds well, it is frustrating. (Same story with the flute... 😅)
I'm a little embarassed but I was player 2 for the longest time. With that out of the way, James Carter is a mother... I wouldn't listen to a whole concert by him but this dude's pushed the sax technique to an absurd level.
I'm a newby and have a lot to learn.!When you played the scales at the end, I noticed you took your lips off almost every other note. Is that a huff you push down for the next note or just a breath? Your sounds are fantastic; mine are all your bad sounds at the moment, so I think your video shows me how to achieve good ones in any particular piece. I am going to practice slowly at firs and with a backing track, do you recommend any?
Hey have you tried saxophone : Imperial Boosey and Hawkes Tenor Saxophone. Mine is like made 1942. If you see this message please could you try doing a review on it if should get a professional sax. I play jazz and love my sax but it’s not giving a dark type of tone. Is it just me or is it the sax.
exactly what i was looking for. thanks man! love your content; it strikes the perfect balance of educational and entertaining (loved the skit where zack punched you in the diaphragm lmao)
hey saxologic I have been playing for a few months with some gonzales (soprano) local 627 reeds, which have been working very well for me. I would love for you to try them, they are very good.
Neck strap, neck angle, mouthpiece type, reed choice, endless game. All of this are making sound and it's final color. Sound is primary in your imagination.
What a great solo from Kenny G 1:19 always showing his talent to this world
yup. Such a disgrace he's a respected player. Does circular breathing on 1 note with a shitty sound haha
Eso fue un bajo continuo
xD
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Leaving this for later me:
Exercise 1: 5:33
Exercise 2a 7:37
Exercise 2b 9:10
Exercise 3 10:46
Come back it’s time to practice
Have you practiced yet?
Helpful! Thanks.
And for me, too. Thanks!
get to practice
I honestly love the parts where he is just sitting in his room demonstrating the exercises. it makes it so relatable.
Nah cause holy shit that classical tone in the beginning was the best tone I’ve ever heard
i agree that was very good wtf
Just like he said we all have our tone biases. I to be honest hated the sound. I can acknowledge it was objectively good but I just don’t like it
Amazing video! Made me want to practice these exercises!
The legend himself!
Wow u are a great player

Gear. It's all gear. No matter how long you practice the French horn, you'll never sound like Coltrane.
The amount of confusion I had before I busted out laughing lmaoo
Won't sound good until you have a mark vi, best horn ever made
@@Jonathanhsax nah, a Yamaha YZF-R1M will literally crush any Selmer
@@c.l.4895 it's a meme

Great video Nathan.
Thanks Jay!!

Bro keep it up you can seriously go places if you stay saxophone in a serious position

Watching the progress... blossoming of musical abilities over the years has been wonderful

Bro that James Carter clip is fucking WILD
I love the way that Nathans's videos are extremely entertaining while still extremely helpful!

Me and Clarinet. Not big on classical clarinet but love jazz clarinet
The tongueing concept was a throw back for me back to highschool band camp days at UBC where the director would hammer down on that technique can confirm its the GOAT technique.
Jazz bro fro is 🔥
Jazz bro fro 😂
Just me, or is Nathan slowly turning into Bruno Mars?
Mouthpiece remington is the move! It's actually something brass players are trained to do just because of how the mechanics of the instrument are. Never thought to try that on a sax mouthpiece!
This intonation exercise you showed is a true game changer, for any instrument (the violin in my case)
bro not to d1ckride or anything, but I haven't tuned into your channel for a while and you are sounding really good! as an aspiring saxophonist it's a pleasure to listen to you play
😂😂
Fantastic lesson, Mr Graybeal! Thanks!
Man, I adore you: you are unselfish, unlike many other saxophonists, talented, creative, and, yes, humorous.
That Classical lad with alto in ✋️ 👦 VK
Wow, that was a great point and demonstration about intonation. I think I better check up on my own!
Thanks so much for this, its so clear AND has a lot of room for me (an adult brand brand new sax player with previous musical experience) to experiment and find my own sound ❤ saving this to watch countless times
I am getting back into playing saxophone, I enjoyed this explanation and the exercise recommendations
Never seen a sax youtuber be so funny while informative 😂
Hi Saxologic. This is a great tutorial, thank you so much. Also, you're 1k away from 200k! Nice job
i love watching this as a trumpet player
You always make me smile with your videos, also helped my playing with the tons of advice! You're a great person, thank you for inspiring me to play sax!!
Much respect and love from Romania ❤
Gotta have it. ❤ These three things are tremendously helpful! See you in JLV.
Thank you! Such a cool variety of examples (even including Romanian "muzica populara").
Once I'm finished with 8th grade, I'm gonna be done with school band. I wanna switch over from classical to jazz, and im gonna use these video to help me with that
You’re an amazing player! Thanks for sharing your knowledge
I was exactly like player 2, I feel called out😂😂
That tone is AWESOME 🔥
0:25 gave me hardcore bunky green vibes. Fantastic playing as usual, Nathan!
You are right, everyone is entitled to their opinion on a fav tone. Except for people who ask for the Lee Thompson tone on every song, they are wrong.
Thanks for those great exercices 👍

Fantastic lesson thank you. I am going to apply this to the leaf.
Love this channel man and I don't even play sax...yet
Thanks Nathan. This is exactly what I needed.
I'm a little embarassed but I was player 2 for the longest time. With that out of the way, James Carter is a mother... I wouldn't listen to a whole concert by him but this dude's pushed the sax technique to an absurd level.
this is one of my favourite saxologic videos and maybe even saxophone videos I have ever seen!
This was really helpful. You're the reason I started saxophone😁
Love your videos, always makes me laugh out loud. So many funny gems on this one. Thanks.
You got some good energy my friend. Thank you. ❤
That 5 seconds kenny g clip killed me instantly.
This was really helpful man! Love your videos!
Hi! Great video! Where can I find that exercise (11.48) you talk about and show? Is it in your course? I would love to learn it.
Awesome video. Good to see you’re somehow still improving. Wild.
Congrats on 200k!!! 🎉
You remind me of Bruno Mars but with wicked humour. Loved your video. Great talent. Thanks from the UK
your best video- so good - so applicable
Have a good day

That haircut is giving me serious disco vibes. Great skits.
Some guys play jazz on the Selmer S-80 D opening. It can work. Doesn't work for me; but, it could work for someone.
The flipnote legend
came here for sax advice, came out with a new philosophy on life

Great video you make the best videos
I'm not a saxophonist but that was fascinating and you're extremely funny and catchy
This is awesome!
Thank you for these tips!

What’s ironic is that I’m about to go to jazz practice🎷

I just realized what's in the intro of Atrevete - Calle 13 😅 Cool
Hey Nathan. Can you or Chad do a video comparing the Alto Nexus Select, Nexus One, and Mark VI, just like Chad did for the Tenor video?
tone is great but the fro is even stronger
