Very helpful video. I used to be a trombone player and often used Triple tonging for brass. You’re the first person I’ve heard explain how to do it on sax. Thank you.

I’ve been playing for around 4-5 years and I just learned to not close the air flow lol

Thank you for visualising it. I am a trumpet player so I should be careful not to tongue on my clarinet the same way I do trumpet (right above top teeth)

Thank you for this in instruction. Great information for this beginner .
I tongue from the middle of my tongue.
I’m going to experiment with the different syllables you mention.

Hi. Everyone tongues a note differently. I have shown 3 ways to tongue in the video but I'm sure there are other ways of doing it. If your way of tonguing is working for you and you sound good then I don't see the point in changing your method. There is a video on TH-cam called 'David Liebman the complete guide to saxophone sound' watch around 1:46:38. He explains tonguing in more detail. He explains and uses my first method. I use the last method in my video. Also be aware that saxophone players will change the way they tongue for different effects such as doodle tonguing or playing ghost notes, or for slap tonguing. Hopefully if you watch David Liebman's video it will help. Thanks

I played flute and then brass instruments before landing on saxophone. As a result, I learned a type of tonguing that involves touching the roof of my mouth, and not the reed. It helps me build pressure which once released let’s me start the sound cleanly. I’m actually trying to learn to tongue conventionally, but it’s tricky to avoid slapping the reed too hard and making excessive tongue noise. I like the NA or NEE syllables, definitely softer that TA. Do you have experience with my “false tonguing” (as I call it) ?

Hi. This is the first time I have heard of tonguing in which you touch the roof of the mouth and not the reed. But if it works and sounds good, I don't see the reason for changing it. You don't have to conform to the way that others play. The only time I know of where a person starts a note without touching the reed or using a breath attack is when using a guttural sound as in double or triple tonguing such as da-ga-da or when starting some altissimo notes. Though having said that, you may have problems moving from the normal range to the altissimo range based on tongue position. Thanks

@@Saxcomprehensive It’s novel for my teacher as well, and it’s not bad. Right when my tonguing sounds super clean (no tongue sound), I often figure out that I have reverted to false tonguing. I also wind up doing this when trying to play very quietly as it has the effect of augmenting your attack to get the reed started with little air volume.

She came here for the childish tonguing comments. Very disappointed. He couldn't even find it.
