  • This is the Ken Films Super 8 home movie version of The Empire Strikes Back. It is in color and has sound. It was originally two separate reels. They are edited together here.
    Ken Films was located in Fort Lee, New Jersey and for awhile, they were the most prolific company. They secured large contracts with major distributors in the retail market, (for instance K-mart), while many of the other companies were limited to camera stores or direct mail order.
    In 1973, Ken signed a deal with Paramount to release a large number of 200’ and 50’ silent versions of some of their most popular features, starting with two parters of “The Greatest Show on Earth”, “The Ten Commandments” and “Samson & Delilah”.
    Ken Films made the big jump into color and sound in 1974 with 200’ versions of all 5 “Planet of the Apes” movies. That deal with 20th Century Fox resulted in a staggering amount of 400’ releases in early 1975, starting with “The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre”. Ken also put out a large number of 200’ color/sound American International product during this period.
    The highlight of the Ken Films story (and package movie history in general) has to be the Ken release of the 200’ color and sound “Star Wars” while the film was still playing in theaters!
    In 1978, Ken and MGM came to an agreement for Ken to distribute selections from MGM’s vast library, starting with “Dr. Zhivago”. This title, along with a number of others, was later released in 3x400’. American International also got the 400’ clamshell case treatment and in the case of “Meteor”, a 3x400’ release.
    “The Empire Strikes Back” (Part two) was Ken Film’s last 400’ non-MGM title. Ken released feature length prints into the early 1980's including “The French Connection”, “Casablanca”, “Gone With The Wind”, “Singin' In The Rain” and “2001: A Space Odyssey”. They also distributed the ABC line of features. In the mid 1980’s Bob Lane brought Ken Films to an end, with Derann receiving many of the Ken’s feature negatives.

    The relevance is that there was a time period, when there was only three networks, a smatter of UHF channels and the only way to enjoy these vintage home movies, was buying these digest version of the feature films! While it would be still YEARS (until the mid 80's or later) until people could actually enjoy these films on thier TV's, super 8 collectors could enjoy them as of the year that they came out and, as one of the people stated in these posts, this fellow appears to be lucky to have a good color print, now almost 40 years after this digest came out.

    • @AvengerII

      @@Dman425 I was going to say the same!
      Also, it wasn't THAT long before Star Wars debuted on pay for TV and HBO -- those were both by 1982 and 1983 (winter). The official "free" network premiere of Star Wars was on CBS in 1983.
      Sure, VHS players and video rental did not explode until later in the 1980s but rentals and purchases of pre-recorded VHS (at higher prices than much later) still existed prior to 1985.
      All the Classic Trilogy films were out on home media (VHS, laserdisc, and videodisc while that was around) by 1986. The "free" network airings of the original trilogy were disasters in ratings; I think by the time they aired, the films were played out for popularity in the original era (1977-1986). By the time the Star Wars films showed on CBS and NBC (I don't think ABC played any of them in the 1980s; Star Wars was on CBS and I think the other 2 played on NBC), people had already done the pay per view (yes, that existed back in the early 1980s!) route, HBO, VHS if they were available, or bootlegged them (VERY common)!

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @gecko 1968 $700?!? Unreal! They'd never get away selling a player that expensive now! They can't even push 4K Blu ray players that cost $250 US out of showrooms and I've been wanting to get one for a few years now. That $700 Australian in 1982 is equivalent to $2700 (Australian, not American; I checked with an online inflation adjustor) today. Shows how much the value of money's fallen!

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @gecko 1968 The first VCR my parents bought was a top-loading VHS model I think. I could be wrong...
      That machine didn't seem to last for long. Seem to be pretty fragile and it didn't survive me and my siblings!
      I still have my own VCR bought in the mid-1990s. I haven't used it in years but still have pre-recorded tapes with programs never re-released on DVD or Blu ray plus at least 2 partially blank tapes.
      I haven't seen blank tapes in stores for years now but clam shell pre-recorded (Disney titles and others) seem to be collectible again. Some of the used bookstores (and or course online) still trade in used or shrinkwrapped tapes. To be honest, I NEVER liked owning VHS and preferred disc.
      I'd NEVER go back to tape. Digital media is much better but I think it's a mistake to dump all physical media in favor of streaming. They've been censoring films and TV shows on streaming for years now and most people seem to be ignorant and accepting of that.

The more I watched this Reel, the more I realized, there is more than just a few words, sounds effects added...the scenes are not the same. We are quite possibly enjoying the majority of this with cuts practice scenes, that is why so much is different. These are not realized movie cuts, this is something more special and rare. This is what we *haven't* seen over and over, that's why scene after scene stands out to me as different, because it is, because they are. I have the original Box Set Trilogy on VHS. I realize this is an edit of the whole film, but they cut out the, "I am your father scene". WTF? Possibily the most pivotal scene in the whole saga.

    • @dartman71
      @dartman71  7 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      That was the biggest scene in the film. They didn't want to give it away to the people that would only buy this digest version. You had to go to the film in the theater to get that. It's pure marketing.

      Back in the days, it was not. Noone gave a shit about Star Wars until the 80s. I have Alien on Super-8, just one reel. Yeah, the "iconic" facehugger scene is not really in it.

      @@AmstradExin I have Alien digest too... but I think facehugger scene is in there. But maybe wierd-cutted like this star wars (I also have, both reels). I purchased many digest via ebay years ago. Must say, I have quite rare things too. Three-reel Star Trek: The Motion picture, whole film Poltergeist (both good color). Interesting this copy of Empire strikes back has so good color. Mine is very red :)

    It's almost like this is how the movies should be. Short, action packed and zero exposition, just like the old serials that inspired Star Wars in the first place.
    Imagine if this was how Star Wars was brought to the theaters instead of as 2 hour epics. I'd go every couple of months if that's how it were done.

      My father was an FBI agent and around 1981 he took 12 year old me to his office after work hours to get some extra things done, and he put a confiscated Betamax tape of The Empire Strikes Back in the player they had there for viewing evidence.
      I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I remember being amazed that it was even possible to see a movie that new on a television. Of course it was probably a crappy camcorder copy filmed in an empty theater because I remember the picture was good and the sound was terrible. It was probably the same version you had.

    Fantastic. I remember these being advertised in the Star Wars comic..never knew the condensed version would work this good. In my hometown on the market,they had a guy who sold old tech (this was late 80’ until mid 2000’) and he had tons of super 8 movies,including this and the other two Star Wars movies from time to time... thing was he sold them at stupid price’s. in 80’ he wanted £100 for each movie and £200+ for a projector. Our wages back then were shite,so never had enough after bills and stuff..plus the girlfriend at the time would of gone crazy if I’d bought them.😤😡

    28:42 Imagine this: It's the 1980's, you hadn't seen The Empire Strikes Back, but your friend had and has a copy of the Super 8 release, and they show it to you. You find a lot of the scenes cool, but the plot doesn't seem to amount to much.

  • @berendharmsen
    @berendharmsen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I found it interesting to see if they would be able to end up with a comprehensible story in half an hour. I would say they mostly succeeded. It's a 'best bits' version that still sort of makes sense. In several cases I was surprised how well they got away with skipping things. I found one scene that was flipped around and I was surprised they left out the 'I am your father' reveal. Perhaps that was a condition to release this?
    They also hid the fact that Luke loses his hand.
    There were a few audio bits that were different from the versions we know today. Leia sort of trips over her lines here in 13:23 in a way that's actually pretty cool and natural; too bad they replaced that later.
    And I really liked how Han cuts off the cloud car pilot when he tries to warn him again not to deviate his course at 21:45 here.
    Nice salvage, this. I wouldn't even have expected that Empire would have been released like this. I had a pirate copy of Star Wars on VHS before Empire even came out, so this must really have been the swan song of this medium.

Neighbors had a brand-new Betamax which cost more than $800 in those days, but few films were available on video then. Nice to finally see how the second reel was edited. Did they release Jedi in the super 8 format?
