      Wag Dawgwag it's ironic...also... Lucas early adopted on HD tech by shooting Episode 1 on 1080p...yeah...1K...because he thought he was being all cutting edge by going all digital...meanwhile...he locked himself into a resolution that is arguably FIVE times lower than 35mm film. Had he shot on film they could be doing 4k-6K scans of the negative today...but no...stuck with 1K for all live action.

    • @THEremiXFACTOR
      @THEremiXFACTOR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      John Mikulak I'm pretty sure he shot Episode 1 on 35mm film and then moved to digital for the next two prequels.

    • @jmfoggy
      @jmfoggy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      THEremiXFACTOR You are correct...my bad. But the other two...using CineAlta HD cameras...but still 1080p, I believe.

    • @THEremiXFACTOR
      @THEremiXFACTOR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Mikulak Yeah, I've heard they were shot in 2k, so the same kind of HD we get on BluRay.
      Thing is I saw those prequels projected on large cinema screens and they looked pretty good as far as I can remember. Also I'm sure there were plenty of other films shot with that resolution when the 'digital revolution' happened. But yeah, film looks far better and there's no where else to go with those movies when you're looking at 4k/8k.

    Excellent restoration! This brings back a lot of great memories. I got this toy for Christmas in 1979...used the crap out of it! Eventually carved up the cassettes and edited into one reel to project on my super 8 projector. I should never have done that. Trying to acquire the cassettes again.
    This absolutely made my day!

    "Generally regarded as the finest motion picture of all time, Star Wars opened in 1977 to screaming fans. But it was lost forever, ruined by this evil man (George Lucas). He betrayed and murdered the movie. He helped the bad people hunt down and destroy all copies."
    "We decided to... RESCUE Star Wars. This would require finding a print. We would leave no stone unturned. It became our quest, our destiny."
    "The projector... did not function. It was unable to... project... Star Wars."
    "When we opened the canister, we were shocked to learn that this copy... was NOT 70 mm at all. It was a rare format of unusually high quality."
    "Now we had to rescue... the AUDIO."
    LMAO.

      What makes this parody ironic and ignorant at the same time is that back in the late 70's movies/television shows were being sold and rented on 8/16/35mm film. And yes you could buy a Super 8mm copy of Episode 4 for $60. 16mm copy for $150 and 35mm copy for $250.
      One night my Father rented a Super 8mm copy of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. And it looked good.
      This idea that Super 8mm looked bad is based on ignorance. Unfortunately 8mm was not a pro format so most 8mm users didn't take good care of their films and/or ran them through badly maintained projectors. But FYI Super 8mm prints were over 400 lines of resolution. Just as good or better than your Laser Disks!
      And that is why I didn't find this video funny.
      O.k.....It was funny but remember what I said. A well maintained Super 8mm print of episode 4 would look just as good as 30 min per side 400 line Laser Disk set. And yes I find Laser Disk a joke.

      SMBComix new sound effects were added to the cantina scene in June of 1977. Harmy restored the May 1977 version of the film which is why the sound effects aren't in there. Also the shot where the Imperials blast their way into the Tantive IV is in the movie.

    • @breadman5125
      @breadman5125 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SMBComix I'm pretty sure that the rumble sound effect was apart of the mono sound mix which was the sound mix used for the June 1977 release of the film and the home releases of the film until 1997.

    Now that it's possible. We need George Lucas to scan his awesome inter-positive of the film entirely into the computer and then, use the magic of the computer to make the composite shots and optical effects look as good as possible, without altering the film grain and overall "feel" of the film. No chopping up or touching the timing at all, adding to or taking away. Just what it was in 1977. This film won Best Editing Oscar.

  • @Mrshoujo
    @Mrshoujo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    I realize this is a tongue-in-cheek parody of film restoration, but you could have taken this to a new level by removing the scratches in the Super 8mm film, fixing the colors, etc, and putting a not-recorded-over-the-phone but still from that 45 RPM single audio to it. It's nicely done otherwise!

    I have a DVD release of the original trilogy pre 1997 as bonus discs and the effects are still great. Anyhow if you really want to find true lost classics there are 97 lost Doctor Who episodes from the 1960s which were deliberately wiped by the BBC to be re-used and only foreign domestic sales footage survive but it is taking decades to find them as video recorders didn't exist with the general public!

    Just one more thing. I understand the 1977 original version of Star Wars has it's flaws in what could be done "by hook or by crook" It was innovative! It was a miracle to have ever been made in the first place, George made a masterpiece of art against all odds. It should just be preserved "warts and all" with all it's failings and shortcomings, in that spirit, perhaps "touched up just a little on WHAT IS THERE to make it look good as can be.

    This is so wonderful I can hardly stand it. This is totally fabulous. I would like to discuss a podcast I'm working on. I actually owned all of these Kenner cartridges when they came out. I recently opened one up and it contains different scenes then the one you presented. I have had mine transferred digitally as well. I also purchased the 200 and 400 foot color sound Super 8 reels from Ken Films which I've transferred as well. My transfers are really nice quality; better than any I've seen on TH-cam. Anyway, I'm starting a podcast that I believe you'll find very entertaining. I'm looking for others who want to participate as commentators. Regardless, thank you for this very funny presentation. I really love it!

      Hi Jon, thanks for the kind words. I too have all of the Kenner SW cartridges and intend to exhume and transfer all of them. I recently replaced my WorkPrinter with a more modern MovieStuff scanner, so of course I'll be redoing this one too. Based on what you wrote, you really should join the OriginalTrilogy group and start participating in the preservation discussions (if you haven't already). My handle there is "puggo", and one of my contributions was scans of the 400 foot Ken Films reels, called the Puggo Edition. I also did 16mm scans under the name "Puggo Grande". Those too would benefit from a rescan. There are some serious preservationists on the forum, the most famous probably being "Harmy", who you may have heard of. I met him when I traveled to the Czech republic a few years ago. If you'd like to reach me about your podcast, I'm easy to find by Googling puggo jar jar's yoda.

The way I did it was 1,use A Sony Digital 8 Camera and set it to 30fps, and 2. I used A HD Cannon camera at 24P and 1080p. This is for films shown at 24frp, for 18 frs,super 8 I used my friends Sony Fx-1 Hd camera set at 30 fps almost not flicker at all, but this camera flickers A lot when trying to transfer 24fps films.

    is it the digital effects you dont like?

    ( saw it in 1977) but it looks so dated now to me...this is only my opinion guess i cant talk you into thinking the same..
    on another note....lets wait for the new 3 movies coming out...
    maybe those will blow the others away..?

    Han shot first! ... 'nuff said!

      People keep getting this wrong. Han did not shoot first. He was the only one to shoot. Greedo nevered fired which made Han Solo a ruthless killer. Nothing got in his way! When George Lucas changed that scene, it now changed Han Solo from a Ruthless Killer to someone who was only defending himself. See What I mean? I don't mind some of the changes to EP. 4 but that scene with Han and Greedo should have been left alone.

    I'm not talking shit about the special editions. They're cool, but they were made from and with the original negative of Star Wars, which was all chopped up and the film stock restored (cleaned) and pieced back together into what physically exists now as the special edition. The 1977 Original no longer exists! That's okay. But please do a preservation of the film from the best source extant now. (George's own personal print), With the original Oscar winning edit and timing intact.
