The Beginning: Making Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (Full Version)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 พ.ค. 2024
- The Beginning is a documentary on the making of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, originally produced for the film's DVD release. It covers the entire production of The Phantom Menace, from preproduction to casting to visual effects, editing, and theatrical release.
The Beginning starts with early production work on the film, as George Lucas (returning to the director's chair for the first time since Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope) and Lucasfilm plan how they will bring his vision to the screen. Jake Lloyd auditions for the part of Anakin Skywalker and is eventually cast in the role, joining Natalie Portman (Padmé), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn). Lucas leads several meetings with ILM, including visual effects supervisor John Knoll, in an effort to figure out how Episode I's many CGI effects would be accomplished -- Jar Jar Binks, in particular, was a challenge, as digital characters were still new at the time.
Other highlights from The Beginning include Steven Spielberg, a longtime friend of Lucas', visiting the set and getting a first look at a battle droid prop; McGregor choosing his lightsaber hilt; stunt rehearsals offering a glimpse at how The Phantom Menace's thrilling lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Darth Maul came together; footage of the first scene shot (Darth Sidious and Darth Maul's meeting on Coruscant); a look at the editing of the film featuring early effects and the splicing together of different takes; Frank Oz operating the Yoda puppet and working out his performance; and finally, the opening night release of The Phantom Menace in theaters. - บันเทิง

The actor is awesome and Jar Jar was a decent character, he wasn't half as bad as people made him to be and exaggerated him to be, as a character he didn't add much but I don't feel like he ruined the film either

Like he was BORN to play Obi-Wan. It’s interesting because his uncle was in the original films. (Dennis Lawson played Wedge Antilles)
Too bad it didn't translate into his character. Because his Phantom Menace character is totally different from his A New Hope character.
@@jimreily7538 I mean yes of cause there are different characters.
The prequels are in part about how he developed into OT Obi-Wan through losing his master, having to take an apprentice way to early, having to fight in the clone wars, losing everything he believed in all lead to his character changing dramatically between Phantom menace and A new hope.
@@jimreily7538 maan shut up.. you have no clue what you're talking about
This is my kind of "behind the scenes" feature; we actually SEE what happens rather than hearing about it from various sources. I wish more were like this.
WhiteBladeZero I agree but everything is ‘spin’ these days. There is no authenticity anymore as all of Hollywood is rehearsed and packaged to the public, This documentary is a window into the problem with the Prequels. You had a generation of adults in 1999 (who grew up with the Original Trilogy) now working for and in awe of George Lucas. So nobody was going to push back that Jar Jar was WAY over the top. Except Ben Burtt, as he was the only one who sort of challenged George.

He has mixed philosophy religion, politics and basic morals into a mythical story that has touched so many people all over the world. People have complaints about the prequels but only realise how great they are after the sequels came out. My childhood would not have been what it was without lucas and I most likely would not be who I am now without starwars.
This documentary in itself is a compelling piece of storytelling.
The guy who plays Jar Jar has the best attitude ever
OneRequiem123 Shame too. He seems like an awesome chap to hang out with in real life. Too bad he is playing an absolutely horrible character.
OneRequiem123 much better than working at McDonalds..
His attitude about the movie has changed a tad.
He litteraly almost committed suicide because of his role as jar jar. Glad he didn't.
Jesse Mole
It was because of the constant hate mail from overweight neckbeards that really drove him over the edge.
Jar Jar's the key to all this...
you have to admit he was the key. if they did him right, the movie would have been a bigger success. it didn't work though. they did fix that in the next two though.
+Ian Baker Instead we got emo vader.
Illuminati confirmed. Jar Jar is a Sith Lord
dcoy93 im thinking he was intended to be force sensitive but not trained by jedi or sith. He was just a pawn in the force's game to balance the force.
+Ian Baker that may be true who knows? But the evidence seems to point to Sith.
Man, this documentary is like a trip down nostalgia lane. Such a simpler and more joyous time - I miss my childhood.
True, people appear to be a lot more patient and sane back in these times.
Is that you Jake ?
I was 10 when this film came out, I too miss that time, the build up to it was such a magical time, it’s too bad the film wasn’t very good but oh well, this documentary is like watching a film about all the decisions made onboard the Titanic that led it straight to the iceberg. The scene in the theatre after they see the first cut is so full of dread, they knew but could do nothing about it
Being a fan of the franchise and watching this is making me emotional. Thank you George Lucas and everyone involved for this great gift .
26:44 lol
George: Natalie's great. She's great. It all came together. It was perfect. She really had it down.
George: Ian was lovely. Ian's always great. He's reliable.
George: And I learned a lot with Jake.

@@tomb4250 No he said Ian as in Palpatine.
@@dbreiden83080 cool 👍
It surprised me how ewan got his lightsaber, he just chose the one he wanted
And the one he chose was the best! That black base made it look analog - like some kind of old, out-dated technology.
When Ewan is fighting Park I think Park has a black eye from getting hit full force
Yeah, none of this "we designed each lightsaber based on the character's personality, where this style of hilt represents wisdom and the ball at the end represents the desire for balance"
Also, that was the first toy lightsaber I ever had as a kid, so I'm kinda biased
@@otaking3582 it was also my first lightsaber toy

Finally got to watch this all the way through and I got CHILLS when John Williams started that first run of Duel of the Fates
The music on this one is insane. John Williams is a god.
George seems like such a nice guy. I really think he had the best best intentions with the prequels.
For all the flaws of the prequels, no one can say they're derivative of the OT which is more than I can say for the new trilogy.
He’s a nice guy I think the success altered his focus, don’t think the passion and heart was there anymore
I agree with the altered focus, but the passion is still there with how he was pushing what he had at the time (the sound effects in the podrace). I think George's biggest flaw was the script writing and plot. His universe building was great though.
He's not a strong dialogue writer but I think he's a great visionary director. I love that in each of the prequels he added so many different worlds and amazing visuals, I'm sure he's a nice guy and I'll always respect him for creating something truly special for a lot of people
I think his problem with the Prequels was he didn't have someone to Reign him in and tell him hey this ain't working. Like he did on the O.T .

3:22 is the classic moment. 29:57 Wow, look at Ahmed's physicality! What a great actor that got screwed by the fan reaction.
What's kinda neat about this behind the scenes stuff is that it sort of feels like stepping back into the late 1990s.
Sebi's Random Tech It took place in the late 1990s so that makes sense

I watched this documentary featurette as a kid more times than I can even count when I was growing up. Gave me such an appreciation and even more curiosity about the making of films in general. I’m pretty sure watching this “Making of” doc caused me to watch like every single “Making of” featurette on every DVD I owned for probably the entirety of my teen years 🤣🤣
Watching this makes me wish once again that George had stuck around a few more years to do the Sequels, but he wasn't a young man by that point and didn't want to spend his entire 70s working on another trilogy. You can't be mad at him for that
They didn’t want him around. George complains that, when making the sequels, disney didn’t take any of his suggestions or advice.
@@austinbevis4266 I think they meant they wish George hadn't sold it to Disney in the first place, at least not until he'd done a bit more. But also that we can't blame him for choosing to sell it to Disney since he's not getting any ounger.
@@Lonadar1340 bob iger explains in his book how he deceived George into selling Star Wars. He basically made a bunch of false promises
I never get tired of the screening room moment where they were all horrified by the rough cut
Yes, Ricks look says it all really.
That is actually pretty telling. Even they knew it was bad. And when Ben Burtt talks about how there is too much going on too fast near the end, he was right. You have four "final battles" going on at the same time and each one has a completely different tone. The space battle is just hopeless and desperate, the whole Jar Jar thing is goofy, the attack on the palace was a political move that no one really understood the implications of at the time, and the Obi-Wan/Maul fight is really intense. Those are all spliced together and happening small snippets at a time. It's like watching a bad Christopher Nolan movie.
@@logicaldude3611 When is a rough cut for any movie ever good?
@@logicaldude3611 I mean to be fair this isn't the first star wars film to have different tones cutting back and forth between various battles. Return of the Jedi did something similar with the ground battle on Endor which was a bit goofy but still fun, The space battle with Lando that's very exhilarating, and Luke's intense battle with Vader. Although the tones feel a bit more consistent there than they are in Phantom Menace but I still don't think it's that bad.
@@logicaldude3611, it’s not as bad as you make it seem. Sure they’re all different in tone but they’re all fighting the same battle and all 4 battles mirror each other in a way. Towards the end of the battle, it seems they all lose but they manage to regain their footing and win at the same time and really, only the battle with the droids and gungans was tonally inappropriate. Everything else was find.
28:36 I love the fact that the Darth Maul actor is just casually helping out with something like that

So nostalgic. First Star Wars movie I saw in theaters as a kid. Will always be one of my favorites.
58:55 gotta give George some credit for insisting that they leave in the chorus.
You can tell the amount of care that went into this movie. I will always have a special place for Episode 1. Everyone did their best, and George has always been pushing the boundaries for technology and filmmaking.
YEP GREAT MOVIE !
Did their best? The script was sloppy and there are huge gaping plot holes. not to mention he goes against the lore he established with the first three. He stopped pushing the boundaries years ago and started to depend on CGI which more often than not looks terrible.
@@copheart It doesn't go against the established lore.
@@copheart no it didn’t
@@copheart sure, the movie had some issues, the script could've been better, but it doesn't contradict any pre-established lore, and he pushed the boundaries in terms of CGI
Not just an insightful documentary but a wonderful ‘fly-on-the-wall’ 90s time capsule.
Watching this and watching the Episode 9 documentary really do give you some persepective. The people who work on these movies love these movies. They're excited, they know what it means to be working on Star Wars. Opinions of the films aside, it's really sad to think about how demonized and tormented many of the smiling faces in these clips will later come to be. Especially people like Jake or Ahmed.
What about the docunentary behind episode 9, did people still love what they were making like the people behind Phantom Menance?
I was a child when the "prequels" came out. Maybe that's why I enjoyed them so much. I can watch any SW movie any day, anytime and enjoy it. I love these movies, all of them.
Man, so was I. Was seven when II came out. How can you not like any movie with Christopher Lee in it? The boomer generation is just cynical and jealous
Same. I even thought Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker were good despite having obvious flaws.

John Williams creating the Duel of Fates: CHILLS
This was my FAVORITE documentary as a kid. Expertly tells the story of what actually went into this major, major project.
Everyone dissing Lucas, he was ahead of his time with the thinking, is an auteur for sure. Amazing score John.
To be fair, I think George's heart was in the right place when he made these movies. A lot of people say he's just a heartless money grubbing hack, but I think he genuinely tried to make good films here, it's just that he lost his ability due to his extended period of time being absent from the director's chair, as well as having the experience of making the original Star Wars having scared him away from location shooting, making him prefer green screens and digital technology for comfort and ease, not to mention being surrounded by yes men.
+crazystairs712 Wait, how did you go from saying they didn't hold a candle to the originals to downright saying they are better? What?
+Alan Smithee I completely agree
+Alan Smithee The thing is, he only directed A New Hope. I don't think he was ever an artist, he just wanted to make Flash Gordon style adventure serials, like the kind he watched as a kid. People just expected way too much from the poor guy.
+FOX 12 Have you seen THX 1138 or American Graffiti? Those films showed that Lucas had the potential to be a great filmmaker outside of Star Wars. Like I said, if he didn't take such a long absence from directing in between this and the original Star Wars and having been scared away from extensive location shooting because of the troubles while making A New Hope, George may have continued to make great movies. I also think Lucas is a director that gets easily seduced by technology. I think part of what made the original trilogy work, was that they had a limit as to what they could show with the special effects technology of the time. This allowed George to focus on what really mattered in the story and concentrate on that as opposed to the prequels where he'd go overboard with overly long, flashy action sequences and special effects just 'cause he can.
Those films were decent, but hardly groundbreaking. I liked American Graffiti, but it's a light hearted teenage american comedy. A New Hope was a series of small, simple episodic adventures in the same vain as Flash Gordon. He was never trying to be Francis Ford Coppola. He just wanted to make fun movies. Contrary to popular belief, he didn't have the plot figured out from the beginning. They made much of it up as they went along. And marketing was just as important to him as story. Hence why he replaced Wookiees with cute Teddy Bares, and why he refused to kill Han Solo because "kids won't buy dead Han toys." He was a business man that people insisted on calling an artist. Then they got upset when he did businessman things. Lucas didn't change. People just misunderstood him. And I kind of feel bad for the guy.
Much respect for LucasFilm for putting the prequel trilogy's documentaries up for the ones who missed it.
One of the best, expertly crafted documentaries I’ve ever seen. Star Wars fan or not, the through-line is compelling and self-explanatory: A real film in and of itself. Not to mention how historically significant these digital innovations and practices were at this point in time which essentially set the stage for the entire standard of today’s working industry.
This is a top go-to whenever I need to draw editorial inspiration from.
I can't believe we're gonna see these people once again... This was literally my early childhood...
