I'm full grown man, 190lbs, 5ft 11inchs height. I routinely hunt pheasant with a Remington 870 youth model 20ga. "feel" is so much nicer, I can shoulder and swing with way more confidence and control. and I am about as effective as any other shooter on the field (aka average) .. would 12ga make me better? I really dont thing so. "fit and feel" of a firearm very important and it's easy for people to overlook this fact.
Man could you tell me if 5\8 oz has less recoil then 7\8 oz in 20 gauge ? I was welding farm equipment it slipped off the jack and crushed my shoulder I fear it left me permently recoil sensitive because my stoeger coach sxs is hard my pump action not a problem but for some reason this 7\8 oz Number 8 I think is ridiculous it sucks I really don't want to go to 410 I love that stoeger sxs it saved my life once when I was 9 I was tracking a hog that got out to try to get a rope on it and lead it back home and fix the fence so it couldn't do it I found my hog eviscerated right as I spotted a cougar coming down the limb toward me I shot it with # 2 predator buckshot 18 pellet that left it's intenstines hanging out then squeezed the back trigger which was a slug and killed it then went back to the ranch and called wild life who came out and determined it was a good shoot my point is I love that coach gun we got a long history the pump action is the exact same length I don't understand why one is manageable and the other not I'll rap this up by saying it's not like knocking me down or anything it just sucks to shoot and I try to hold on tight and learn forward to brace for it but wish I could find a lower recoil shell like those aguila mini mags for 12 wish they came for 20 gauge
So I’m not totally crazy! My father gave me an H&R single shot 20 gauge for Christmas 1980. The barrel is fairly short, and it’s a full choke. I always felt that it kicked harder than anything else I had! The smoothest and most accurate shotgun I’ve ever fired is my father’s Ithaca 16 gauge pump (probably made in the late ‘50’s. If you look at my most recent video, about half way through, my son and I were shooting my 20 ga.
@@hydro3028 Hi, I actually have not bought 16ga ammo in quite some time. We’ve got some old ammo dating from the 80’s and 90’s. I can’t even remember the last time I took it out to shoot. My father still keeps it loaded in his closet!
Good point, but a recoil pad on 12 gauge, and nothing on 20 gauge makes the comparison less valid
The 20 looked like it almost knocked you off your feet. the 12 looked much softer. Shouldn't it be the other way around ?
How the gun fits you largely determines how your body disapates the recoil energy.

You make the 20 gauge look like a 12 gauge
That's what happens when a gun doesn't fit well.
My son has a Rossi Matched Pair Trifecta (single shot); I shot using his 20 GA barrel and it kicked more than the 12 GA pump I have.
Guns can kick pretty bad when they don't fit the shooter. And a nice recoil pad goes a long way.

There are recoil calculators online. A lighter weight shot going the same speed has less recoil.

Not really. I like real-world comparisons. Both of these are average weight for their gauge. A standard 20 weighs less than a standard 12.

A 20 gauge game load has about the same recoil as a 30-06.
