I'd love to see a video that compares (3) barrel lengths (10.5, 16" and 18") shooting at 200 yards with 55gr fmj, 77gr otm, and 62 soft point.. It'd be nice to see what each barrel length would do at each target with each ammo.... targets would be ham shoulders.
I can tell you that the soft points will perform better than other options at lower velocities. A 10.5 inch barrel will not get enough velocity for a varmint style soft point to function. You will find no functional difference between a 16 and 18 inch barrel in terms of wound cavity creation with any ammo option. At 200 yards, a 16 or 18 will lack enough velocity for an fmj style bullet to cause much cavitation and you will see little bullet fragmentation. At 200 or greater, I would go with a heavy bullet, or a soft point. The heavier, longer bullets are less stable and cause more tissue damage when they tumble. The soft point will either fragment or expand at 300 or more yards, depending on the specific bullet used.
With softpiont I would still take a hart shot. With the 1/12 it limits you to HOW LONG a bullet will stabilize. The Barns are light but longer for weight.
Never hunting with a .556 but .223 is amazing within like 100 yards for deer I shot my first deer with a .223 and it dropped instantly and I’ve shot a deer with a 30-06 at maybe 150 yards and I never saw the deer again lots of blood but never found it
556 and 223 are the same caliber the only difference is the 556 has a higher pressure. And if the barrel of the AR ses 5.56by45 NATO you can shoot both rounds out of it. But that's not what I was saying, I was just saying there the same caliber because they are.
Looking at a 5.56 bolt gun as I am in my 60s and have a really bad back. I have a question and it may be in bad taste, why is the 5.56 considered a small game round when tens of thousands of men have fallen to the round in war? I can no longer handle a lot of recoil and want a gun for deer and varmints (50 to 200 yards). Thanks
Because it's much smaller than the traditional 30-06. It looks small, and the traditional rounds were all fmj or frangible soft point until recently. The father of the 223/5.56, the 222 Remington, was marketed as a varmint rifle with 40-grain bullets. That's also part of what gave it a bad name. If you use quality modern bullets, the 223 is a death ray. I'd go with .223 for a bolt gun, because the chamber specs tend to create a bit more accuracy. Look for Winchester Deer Season XP or Hornady GMX ammo.
Went 5 for 5 last yr on deer here in Oklahoma using a 72 gr bthp including a nice 8 pt at 156 yds and a doe at 202 yds all but one dropped within 35 yards one at 202 went about 60 yards the haters can talk all the trash they want the proof is in the pudding!!
Some states do allow fmj ammo for hunting. In Michigan, we can. In a lot of areas, fmj is commonly used for small game and varmints, and there is some fmj ammo that's designed to function as a defensive/ hunting bullet.
I have absolutely not a doubt in mind a .223 soft point makes short work of a deer. Im not using it because on lung shots the will absolutely run for a bit as they would with bigger calibers howerver they are much harder to track. The entry hole hardly ever bleeds much ive found generally and even much less from a .223. And the exit hole is often not existend or the bullet came out so slow the hole just closed right back up behind the bullet. .223 is just really hard to track plus there are no real advantages compared to other calibers exept low recoil perhaps.
That ham test showed how devastating that round is and the difference in bullet type...I would pick FMJ for hogs and SP for deer...Where I hunt I would have to use soft point for the hog also by law. Double lung or base of the neck/backbone 50 yrds in would definatly be my shot choices.
The real issue with 223 soft point bullets is that they are not bonded, or delayed expansion bullets. Those Hornady SP bullets are sold as varmint rounds. They do penetrate way more than modern varmint rounds, but are designed to fragment rapidly uo too 500 yards or so. Barmes had an all copper, delayed expansion hollow point 223 bullet that Remington loads. It's designed for deer.

Soft tip at 50-100yards. Only had one big buck run and it was only 30 yards. No exit because it got caught in the rib on the other side. But yeah 4 deer, 4 rounds. Can confirm
I admit I didnt watch every second of your video, so I may have missed it. I dont know the rules in every state, but I do know that its usually illegal to hunt with ball (FMJ) ammo, at least in the several states that Ive hunted in. Just my two cents.
Why are so many people saying they only use for varmints, coyote or that size? They use them in war for craps sake! If the .223 can take down a 350# hog or deer, why do they say varmint rifle?
Just killed 6 hogs today in Oklahoma With a ruger mini 14 55gr .223 only 1 shot each all the hog behind the ear and I aim for the ear hole straight to the brain drop like dropping acorn from trees .. Never hunting with a .556 but .223 is amazing within like 100 yards for deer I shot my first deer with a .223 and it dropped instantly and I’ve shot a deer with a 30-06 at maybe 150 yards and I never saw the deer again lots of blood but never found it
556 and 223 are the same caliber
@@elitepestcontrol3911 go shoot a 5.56 cartridge out of a .223😂 no they not
556 and 223 are the same caliber the only difference is the 556 has a higher pressure. And if the barrel of the AR ses 5.56by45 NATO you can shoot both rounds out of it. But that's not what I was saying, I was just saying there the same caliber because they are.
@@BrandenuzisDone it many times you don't know what the hell you're talking about like. Most people that say that stupid shit that you can't do it
I just got an ar 15 and that helped me alot thank you so much
Check out my recent Video on 223 for deer hunting. I tested out specific hunting ammo.
Nice review!
6 people in Venezuela felt sorry for the way that ham was dispatched
And one ol’ boy in Alabama is crying for the lost ham. 😂
Very good info 👌
Some of us a forced to buy cheaper options. How about a gel test on the Armscor .223 62gr sps round? Thanks in advance.
I've seen videos from Alaska of first nation people using 5.56 Mini 14 taking caribou with head shots. Crazy. New sub.
I've got some serious respect for those people.
@@GunTradition i have no words . Respect and Tradition.
Nice demonstration and explanation, thanks! Please share thoughts about the solids - like Barnes, GMX, etc.?
I love what I've seen of them. If I could just get my hands on them, I probably use them.
I like that ar did u paint it
That wound channel looks delicious!
A bif of a metallic flavor though.
Big Hogs broad side center of the neck.. they hit the ground hard
Now time for a ham sandwich! Nice vid!!
Ham and bacon, the two reasons I couldn't be Jewish.
Good video, but what did you do with the ham ? After you did the test?
Dug out the lead and made ham soup.
@@GunTradition good I am glad you ate it, I love ham.
Twice killed ham...MMmmmm, gooood eating!
how does 62 green tip do in heavy bone?
It penetrates a bit better but tends to make smaller wound channels.
I didn’t just subscribe because it was a pretty cool and informative video… I was thinking about how much those hams cost the whole time
Me too.
What happened to sound?
Love my fusion 62 grn outta my 16in.
What rate of twist is your barrel?
1/7
Actually have a 1/9 that shoot it real well also
Went 5 for 5 last yr on deer here in Oklahoma using a 72 gr bthp including a nice 8 pt at 156 yds and a doe at 202 yds all but one dropped within 35 yards one at 202 went about 60 yards the haters can talk all the trash they want the proof is in the pudding!!
223 vs 22/250. What would you choice be
Great presentation. Thank you for sharing. Is it legal in some States to hunt with a FMJ? In Florida Public Land it is not legal.
Some states do allow fmj ammo for hunting. In Michigan, we can. In a lot of areas, fmj is commonly used for small game and varmints, and there is some fmj ammo that's designed to function as a defensive/ hunting bullet.
You can in Texas as well, although it's not recommended. Fort Scott TUI ammo would be one.

Got a question to ask? , What length handguard is that on ur ar 15 ?
Think effective distance would increase with heavier bullets and a tighter twist (e.g. 1:7)?
Awesome video
Well thanks!
Just one thing to consider, you shot ham, where is the fur? Fat boar's fur makes a big difference in bullet penetration...
I may have missed it, what range did you shoot the hams at?
Is a soft point comparable to a v max? Is a v max a type of soft point?
V-max is a frangible, almost disintegrating bullet. It's much more drastically and more quickly broken up than any soft points you'll find.
Thoughts on 70 gr Barnes tsx from a 20"?
I'd use it as long as it shoots well from your rifle. The slower twist rate barrels don't like 70 grains.
That's true. It's really just the fact that if you have a 233, you could use it.
Thoughts on the 60 grain copper 223 bullets?
The all-copper bullets expand well and penetrate nearly twice as much as standard bullets. They are awesome!
@@GunTradition right on! I have a box of SIG copper 223 im gonna try out this season in northeast mn
What kind of ammo is the sp?
When I go hog hunting in Arkansas, I use 223. Works just fine.
Greetings From Russellville. Where are you hunting them?
@@Starcraft98marine hello friend, I have some family friend in Waldron. That's my usual, when I feel like hunting. But I do travels few areas, out towards Russellville being one of them but a bit further for me.
I always go for a heart shot on deer with my 223 . No problems yet . Usually destroys the heart . I use vmax .
I dont usually take shots past 200 yards with 223 . I think the longest was 220 .
Wolf or coyote hunting , I take longer shots .
We drive deer so most of our shots are at running deer.. I’m reluctant to use such a small round..
All about shot placement!
Soft tip at 50-100yards. Only had one big buck run and it was only 30 yards. No exit because it got caught in the rib on the other side.
But yeah 4 deer, 4 rounds. Can confirm
It works.
best shot is a headshot - period
yeah you dont always get that and hogs are hit as many as you can once they start running
I admit I didnt watch every second of your video, so I may have missed it. I dont know the rules in every state, but I do know that its usually illegal to hunt with ball (FMJ) ammo, at least in the several states that Ive hunted in. Just my two cents.
I have big hands so yes, the grip is small. Thankfully the recoil still isn't an issue.
Best Video Ever ! Thanks :)
I just got an AR-15 trying to figure out if 223 or 556 is best for larger game
They are functionally the same. There are more hunting options in .223
You need to use heavier bullets like 75 or 77 gr. Otherwise 55 gr are too light and short
A 55 grain is most common for hogs and deer. I do have a 62 grain soft points that I like. That's the heaviest I'll go.
I use 75 gr brhp and it works well for hogs any lighter and you're better off with fmj
I was stalk hunting a hog and I broke the shoulder with hollow point 223 fiochi just saying personal experience
It was a 3 foot long hog
Why are so many people saying they only use for varmints, coyote or that size? They use them in war for craps sake! If the .223 can take down a 350# hog or deer, why do they say varmint rifle?
Because bullets weren't as good in the past.
5 star video
AR-15 5.56 carbine with 1/7 barrel twist on 16in barrel what ammo would you recommend to hunt deer with? 100-150 yd range maybe less
68-80 gr
77 grain tmk
Just killed 6 hogs today in Oklahoma
With a ruger mini 14 55gr .223 only 1 shot each all the hog behind the ear and I aim for the ear hole straight to the brain drop like dropping acorn from trees .. I shot a smaller hog 50lbs hog with a armpit shot it ran 25 yards and collapse through and through from about 45 yard
Seems to work eh?
@@GunTradition it works ..
I said. 223 and 7.62x39 are perfect for whitetail deer and mule deer to wild pig of but I wouldn't shoot pass 50 yard with .223 but the round works..
Deer and Hogs are not large game 22 mag would do that
Right I wanna see this against brown bear/grizzly or moose
Works on a human it will work on a deer
Pretty good video except i take deer at 250 to 300 yrds easy.more often than not they never move.
Homie must got some damn food stamps the way he just buys hams to shoot smh
It like to see this at 100 yards
If 223 is more powerful then pistols then why is it worst for a bear?
It's lightweight and doesn't penetrate well, and it high velocity causes most bullets, even FMJ, to fall apart which further reduces penetration. Bears tend to require more penetration than deer.
@@GunTradition thanks the the reply. Would you say that 223 would cause more damage, as in width? Just doesn't go deep enough.
@@timbango2090 bigger initial damage but on thicker boned, skinned animals you need penetration more than initial damage bears are a bit thicker than people
