@John Dodo Say what u want about the combat, but calling it lazy is disingenuous. You use "woke" as an insult though, so there's no surprise there, lol
Played some of the opening sequence of this last night before bed, and I can definitely see where the intro is more "for the fans". As a longtime fan, I was really immersed with not only the bigger picture in simply going to Hogwarts, but some of the little details. Like when I saw the carriage seemingly pulled by invisible horses and knew, as a fan, they were thestrals. Then suddenly a tragedy happens and for just a few seconds you see them turn visible before your attention is turned away from it. That's attention to detail I love, since they only become visible when you've seen someone taken by death. But others might see it as simply a neat detail, if they even catch it at all, let alone why it happened. Alongside that, things like seeing the mechanics at work on their own in the background, when the floo powder fast travel thing greets you at each post, the introduction to spells before you even learn them, those are all definitely things that bring me back into that world and have me eager to play more and more.
The invisible thestrals in the intro were total fan service. To everyone else, it just looked like the assets didn't load. A bit of a risky move if you ask me, putting something like that within the 2-hour refund window.
@@alphabrainwave as a non-fan, I've watched Melonie's stream and just assumed they were invisible horses. I was like "what's pulling the carriage?" Then they appeared after the dragon attack and they looked like smaller dragons. As far as I know, Harry Potter is all about magic and everything I've seen has me impressed! I'm waiting for the April release
i think the setting being over 100 years before the movie timeline gave us the Harry Potter universe access without making us have a sideline quest rolling under the movie story line. Also, the game designers have really built a beautiful game that is a blast to play. I'm loving it.
I’ve always been more a fan of the world building in Harry Potter rather than it’s plot and characters, and this game is exactly what i’ve dreamed of. Brewing potions, sneaking around, getting up to mischief, broom flying, going to magic classes, solving puzzles, toying with spells, taming and caring for beasts, it all hits my spot. It’s *magical* if you will
Exactly the Wizarding world is so much cooler than the Harry Potter chosen one plot… I love the characters of star wars but some people don’t like the prequels because of the characters and the plot but most people that don’t even like the prequels can agree that it made the world of star wars so much more fascinating because it showed us there was so much more than we could have even imagined the galaxy far far away started to feel more like the size of a galaxy with a past and a future and endless stories to tell. That’s what Hogwarts legacy does for me it’s so much more than Harry Potter it’s what the fantastic beast has showed us as well but once again the characters are not as interesting as the world around them
What are your PC specs? I ask because what I've seen so far is that exploring Hogwarts can be a pain sometimes due to the loading screens doors, but the most annoying thing is that the whole place doesn't feel well optimized even for some very high end hardware. Hopefully it will be addressed in the next patches. Have fun, tho
mines running smoothly on a 16gb rtx3070 ryzen 5800 laptop. Im running it on 2k with medium settings but works well with high it just I don’t want my laptop to be hot and I don’t want the fans to be loud. ultra lags but is still playable. I have my fps capped at 60. Its capped on medium and high but ultra is around 50fps and can go down to 30fps at times.
Not a Harry Potter guy myself. Never read the books. Watched a couple of the movies only. But I do like sci-fi/fantasy. And I thought the lengthy introductory sequence was quite engaging. I think the strong voice + facial performances contributes to that a lot. Having a lot of fun with the game so far.
To be fair in terms of the sorting ceremony the reason they only gave 2 questions was because the official sorting quiz could be used and linked to the game if you wanted a proper measurement of what house you really belong to
Yep. They even remove the second question and just have the hat recommend your house. Connected my account, got ravenclaw, my wand was all set up and I’m going to hope if there is a patronus, it’s a Rottweiler
It is closest to Ubisoft in formula BUT i would say that because this is an entirely new to this level developer, it truly feels like its own thing. Even the collectible stuff...honestly is fantastic in this game because you almost always get clothes, or other unlocks. And the attention to every single inch of hogwarts and the world...just makes everything feel so unique. It is great.
Idk it’s like a ubi open world kinda but WB has kinda developed their own ubi open world style ubi feels cookie cutter copy and paste generic worlds with the exception of a few ac games where it’s just perfectly hand crafted (ezio trilogy) (France from unity) … WB games are great at making the fantasy open world games with plenty of unique mechanics and fantastic combat (shadow of Mordor series, Batman Arkham series)
@@filletmignon5221 Assassins Creed is my guilty pleasure. I have no problem putting 80 hours into Valhalla. I always described AC games as historical Forrest Gump which is love.
Matty I want to give you something on the sorting hat. If you did the Potter quiz online that the game links too it gives you more questions to choose your house, your wand, and your patronus.
You can tell the developers were really passionate about this universe and have put a lot of love into this game. I may not know a bunch about the HP universe other than some of the movies many years ago but this world is gorgeous. I keep taking all the scenery in. The castle is beautiful, with the ray traced reflections to the max they did a great job which makes it more upsetting that there's a group of people trying to ruin this game unsuccessfully thankfully
Im not a Harry Potter Fan, never watched the movies or read the books, but this game is amazing. On picking your house, do it through the website, a lot more questions.
Hardcore LOTR Fan who scoffs at Harry Potter but my gf made me watch all the movies and after playing a few hours I can say as a critical gamer this game is a decent open world rpg...It's well done and above average!
As a Harry Potter fan, the start reminded me so much of Half blood Prince that I was giddy the whole time. The attention to detail, the care, the RESPECT for the source material… chefs kiss. Didn’t even realize how short the sorting hat part was, but I guess you can just chalk it up to them having to get through 60 plus kids and you were already late. So you got the express lane
I wasn't a big Harry Potter fan myself before this game! Don't get me wrong, I watched a couple of movies, but this game really puts you in the role of the character in this universe! I Enjoy it!
Solid review Matty! As someone that isn't a Potter fan either, I found this super informative. Looks like a really well made open-world game that is true to the source material, and I appreciate the devs for delivering that to fans. Just not something I'll rush to the front of my backlog.
Agree with your perspective on this. Even as a fan, the early hours were a stretch. Finally breaking out of the castle was a real boon and put a huge smile on my face. 😊
Performance on PC is absolute garbage once you reach hogwarts. The game constantly drops from a solid 60fps down to 20 randomly and stays there until you reload a save. Even randomly in cutscenes.
Been playing for 7 hours now. My Rig: 6900 XT. 32 Gb RAM. 5900x CPU. Things I dislike: Lack of activities- For a world so large and open, and especially one like Harry Potter, it feels fairly boring. We get a few side activities, however the much hyped dueling cup only amounts to 3 side missions. (If there are more later I'm sorry but this is all I've encountered thus far). No quidditch- (flying around is fun, but feels slower than it aught to, Broom options are also kinda weak with no recognizable names from the movies). The common rooms- relatively boring, nothing of note going on inside even if they are pretty to look at, and their function basically gets stolen but the room of req. The wand customization is cool, but overall pointless and doesn't actually add any change in play style. Few Frame drops here and there. Nothing serious, but noticeable around hogwarts. Speaking of Hogwarts, it feels relatively small. I'm not sure if it's the scaling, however it feels beyond some iconic rooms, a lot of it feels unrecognizable defiantly doesn't capture the grand scale of the castle like the movies do. Wizarding houses mean jack and shit thus far. Very little difference in how the game is played. No real choice in terms of morality. There's a Weasley as a professor, and I just refuse to believe anything of good came out of that bloodline. Voice acting in general is mid to completely terrible. Peeves keeps terrorizing student and the Bloody Baron won't do anything to stop him. Atmosphere feels kinda static between day and night.
It's been an impressions series (outside of Elden Ring) for about a year and a half now. If I didn't communicate the game not being finished and pretend it's a review then feel free to slam me, but this is what it has been for a while now and will continue to be.
@@MrMattyPlays Ok, if that’s what it’s supposed to be that’s cool. I’m new to your channel so I just felt that it was a little misleading. Again thanks for the clarification and for what’s it’s worth I really do like what you do for Last Stand Media.

Wdym by significant role? Because I'd say being able to make potions, grow plants and learn new spell all to be extremely significant to the game especially cause u meet others through class to which they end up teaching u spells and u go on quests with them. In bully all I do is get a prize after classes if u pass all them
@@cmonbruh7139 has nothing to do with the classes tbh. It's essentially just a background for a crafting menu. That's really all they amount to, and that's dissapointing. Having actual quests or events tied to classes would have been so much better. As it stands hogwarts and the classes feel like an afterthought compared to the open world. Dissapointing really.
Mad respect for giving this a fair shot even though your not a HP fan. It’s interesting to hear someone’s feedback that isn’t a HP fan. The material can be hard to follow especially if you haven’t read all of the books. Great review!!!!
I feel like the opening sequence was amazing and very high energy, not sure how it could be considered slow, a man gets eaten by a dragon almost immediately, you teleport to an hidden ruin and delve into a deep vault with traps and enemies. I think what you mean to say is that it's cinematic and tightly hems in player agency at first.
@@richardsalazar121 it's slow. That's objectively true. You essentially have a movie and a half of busy work/cinematics. The very beginning of the game is pretty interesting. After that though it drags like absolute hell.
I used to he a HP fan. Read like 4 of the books and a few of the movies and played some of the games ahike back along with other little merchandise. This game makes me want to get back into it. Seems great!!!
No doubt about it, I'm getting this. I'm not a big Potter fan but I'm familiar enough with the story to know what's going on. It's the fantasy setting I'm after and it appears to do that beautifully.
About 17 hours in myself. Lots to like, and better than most recent open world games, and no Bethesda syndrome when exploring. There's an overall shallowness to the open world though, and still had an emptiness to it, so be warned. The veneer wears off quick, as it needs deeper activities, and ways to flush out hogwarts characters. We've been so far removed from God pen world games for so many years though, even with base oversights, then one is refreshing
While I understand why you mention Bethesda syndrome but thing is games like Skyrim at least gave you a huge world with tons of stuff to do. I remember a lot of stuff about skyrim like items, quests or world. In Hogwarts Legacy i will remember protagonist being OP, Sebastian best friend and Kraken liking toast.

Read the books, watched the movie, I consider myself a moderate fan, like it's not my all time favorite thing but I enjoy it. The game is a masterpiece and the male voice acting is pretty damn solid for a young man from the 1800s, dude's just coded to keep a lid on his emotions, it leaks out alot during combat and exciting / serious instances, like when you get the avada kadavra, some of the things dude says to his dying enemies are so damn cold and angry it kinda shook me the first time I heard it.

Well... Choosing your own wand doesn't make much sense in the universe, considering is the wand that chooses the wizard. I'll stick to what they sorted for me in the site.
Looks good. I'll get it on a sale once it drops to around 20 bucks or so. Were it a multiplayer game, I'd get it sooner. Because I know a lot of Harry Potter fans that are diving into this and I'd enjoy playing with them. So I am not in the position to argue against your opinion. Still... nevertheless... it's not the only place "real gaming" resides. Not for me and tens of millions of others. 😁 And it's not about being cheap, though. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) It's just that I recognize that there are various levels Single-player games. Not all of them are day-one plays for everyone. While I will play Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga and Spider-Man 2 on day one, you may wait a while because those games don't hit you like Hogwarts does. While Hogwarts is a day one buy and play for you, it will be different for other Gamers. That's just reality. I don't buy games until I am ready to play them. It's as simple as that. Besides... The quality if a single-player game does not decrease with time. (Hell, in many cases, the quality improves.) Multiplayer games don't have that luxury. Their quality is partly dependent on the amount of Gamers playing it. So the earlier you get on, the easier it is to find a squad to play with. Good Single-player games, however, are good no matter when you play them. And me? I take advantage of this fact. 🤷🏾♂️

I'm a huge HP fan, and this game is actually exceeding my expectations so far. To add to your points - 1) the game is linked to the official HP site that gives you the legit sorting quiz which is probably why there are only 2 questions. 2) At least in the released version, there are multiple voices for male and female characters. I've enjoyed the specific female voice that I chose. I'm glad that even non HP fans are liking the game.
Been playing since the early release for deluxe and now I’m just… bored. Game feels really repetitive at the point I’m at. Story is bland to say the least. Combat was fun and fresh at first but with the same enemies over and over it got boring quick. World looks alive at first but it’s really dead with the same enemies you fight everywhere. Bugs are big issue as well, got stuck at two points in the game so I have to save EVERY TIME. I most likely won’t play this game ever again once I beat the story. If I beat the story…
Been just exploring Hogwarts tbh, already level 7 and havent even touched the story, thought collecting armor and stuff was gonna make my character look silly then I found out there is a way to change appearance so that awesome, so far just entertained which is what a game should strive for

That’s not true about the gear, you can equip gear, and transmog the gear once you found it, therefore you can still keep your look and have high powered gear. It’s literally on the outfits when you find them.
Perfect review for me. As a none "Potter Head" or whatever, I was curious about this game but very hesitant. This was the perfect review for me. Thank you! Does Ansel work with this game?
Sounds like they nerfed the sorting hat process intentionally. They know how important that roleplaying element is to a lot of people and there has been a lot of promotion of the online house quiz, which requires you to make an account…
Dude I feel the same exact way about Harry Potter. The books and movies were HUGE when I was growing up and I just never cared. I’d rather watch Wizards if Waverly Place than Harry Potter to this day
Matty, if you link your Wizarding World account, it seamlessly uses the sorting results there for the game for your house and wand. You can still choose to change them if you want, but that's an impressive bit of development and forethought. Also, the sorting there is a much more in-depth questionnaire.
Good review but you skipped out a lot of features and things that you could do in the game. But you didn't even mention which I think are great. Like the ability to raise your own animals. The room of requirement all the customization. How you can. You have different brooms and on top of the brooms you also have animals that you can ride and use in combat and so much more. You know the underground dragon arena fights. There's so much to this game that you. I don't know if you just have an encountered it, but all that had so much more to the game like I'm not a big Harry Potter fan. I've seen the movies just because I like you know magic and fantasy and things like that. Never read the books. Don't care about them reading them but I look at this game as an RPG. Open world and is an open world. It's beautiful. The combat is great. The spells how you can use them in combat and outside combat for like puzzles the way you have to the little towns that they have in the open world how detailed they are. There's just so much to it that is missing from your review. Again, I understand you haven't completed the game so I don't know how far you're into it. So maybe you have an experienced any other stuff, but there's a lot a lot to experience in this game that you haven't even gone over. So I would recommend you finish it and do some more exploration cuz there's a lot that you basically had didn't even mention that makes the game that much better.

@@alphabrainwave Tbf, with a game about wizards and magic, I wouldn't be surprised if the average viewer saw it as the latter.
i think the setting being over 100 years before the movie timeline gave us the Harry Potter universe access without making us have a sideline quest rolling under the movie story line. Also, the game designers have really built a beautiful game that is a blast to play. I'm loving it.
14 hours in and I can’t get enough of it! Has all the aspects of open world games that I love and a great setting 😁😁
That’s what Hogwarts legacy does for me it’s so much more than Harry Potter it’s what the fantastic beast has showed us as well but once again the characters are not as interesting as the world around them
How great is it that this game is making new fans of the franchise. I NEVER imagined we’d get such a good HP game
Fantastic game!! I’m absolutely in love with the rich world they’ve created and nothing so far has bored me. It’s simply enchanting.
Rich? The NPCs stand around and do nothing! It's all fake and I can't see how anyone sees life in this

Ofc , on an really good gaming PC would look the best .
@@brSiRiuS what are your specs? And do you have a SSD?
3 hours in and I’m having a blast!
mines running smoothly on a 16gb rtx3070 ryzen 5800 laptop.
I'm not a Harry Potter fan at all either. But then again this open world Ubi style of game is my kind of thing so I'm very excited.
Same im buying it
It is closest to Ubisoft in formula BUT i would say that because this is an entirely new to this level developer, it truly feels like its own thing.
The castle is beautiful, with the ray traced reflections to the max they did a great job which makes it more upsetting that there's a group of people trying to ruin this game unsuccessfully thankfully
as a harry potter fan i am 43 hrs in got it for early access an been playing sense i am having a blast with it
Im not a Harry Potter Fan, never watched the movies or read the books, but this game is amazing.
He is wrong about thse beginning imnot a fan of hp but the game jumps straight into it

@Sketch2805 Studios Not the worst case I've seen lol.😜
I bought this for my wife who’s a big hp fan(not so much me). She’s played for about an hour, I stayed up all night playing…
I love the female voice for the protagonist.
Soft and sweet, right up my alley.
Agree with your perspective on this. Even as a fan, the early hours were a stretch. Finally breaking out of the castle was a real boon and put a huge smile on my face. 😊
Me on the other hand I left the castle like 7 hours in xd
Performance on PC is absolute garbage once you reach hogwarts.
The game constantly drops from a solid 60fps down to 20 randomly and stays there until you reload a save. Even randomly in cutscenes.
"Pack your bags and head over to New Zealand for a day" ya totally not a VPN.
You can link your wb/harry potter account to the game and in that process, you take a longer quiz that sorts you into a house.
I haven't watched the video yet, came here to say I'm about 5 hours in..... And it's absolutely fucking amazing. Can't wait to keep exploring/playing.
Been playing for 7 hours now.
My Rig: 6900 XT.
32 Gb RAM.
5900x CPU.
Things I dislike:
Lack of activities- For a world so large and open, and especially one like Harry Potter, it feels fairly boring.
Another Final Verdict on a game he hasn’t finished!?!? How the hell is that a final verdict?
It's been an impressions series (outside of Elden Ring) for about a year and a half now. If I didn't communicate the game not being finished and pretend it's a review then feel free to slam me, but this is what it has been for a while now and will continue to be.
@@MrMattyPlays Ok, if that’s what it’s supposed to be that’s cool. I’m new to your channel so I just felt that it was a little misleading. Again thanks for the clarification and for what’s it’s worth I really do like what you do for Last Stand Media.
This game has half price sale in 30 days written all over it. Huge initial sales, followed by a drop off a cliff in daily users. Bring on the deep sale.
I was kind of hoping that classes would play a more significant role considering it is set at a school
Disappointing to know they don't. I was hoping for Bully with magic.
Great review!!!!

never heard of someone complaining about character customization before but doesnt surprise me this dude is always nitpicking
Yo the default male voice sounds almost exactly like Daniel Radcliffe and it's honestly weird.
But also kinda awesome.
Yeah…. Dude is smoking
I think he means the following hours after that
@@ras6794 following hours after that were never boring. I actually find the Harry Potter movies boring

I just set up my character and played about 15 minutes and am in love with the game already.
No doubt about it, I'm getting this. I'm not a big Potter fan but I'm familiar enough with the story to know what's going on. It's the fantasy setting I'm after and it appears to do that beautifully.
Nerd
Great video. As someone who hasn't gamed in almost a decade, this game makes me want to play it so badly.

Personally, I think yes, it’s very worth it.
Not a HP-fan, know nothing about the world but.. the start in this game is great :0 What are you talking about? They jump into everything pretty quickly and still able to explain a ton around the world for those that want to know more. Everything comes down to taste, but this is one of those few few games i just can't stop playing (kinda like Elden Ring).
I think it's the fact it starts off cutscene heavy and is lacking in gameplay.

Were it a multiplayer game, I'd get it sooner. Because I know a lot of Harry Potter fans that are diving into this and I'd enjoy playing with them. But as a single-player game that isn't all that compelling to me (not compared to other games coming out this year), I'll wait it out and get it for cheap later.

"Single-player is where real gaming is at."
- It's one of the places where "real gaming" is at. Sure. I agree. Hell, all ten of my Top 10 favprite games of all time are single-player games. So I am not in the position to argue against your opinion.
Still... nevertheless... it's not the only place "real gaming" resides. Not for me and tens of millions of others. 😁
And it's not about being cheap, though.

I never saw, read, or played anything Harry Potter, but finding the story and world here really fun.
Boohoo
Been just exploring Hogwarts tbh, already level 7 and havent even touched the story, thought collecting armor and stuff was gonna make my character look silly then I found out there is a way to change appearance so that awesome, so far just entertained which is what a game should strive for

I played on Xbox, so I'm unsure. However, I'm glad you found the video useful!
Sounds like they nerfed the sorting hat process intentionally. They know how important that roleplaying element is to a lot of people and there has been a lot of promotion of the online house quiz, which requires you to make an account…
I am not a potter fan, but the game is fun.
I hear some Skyrim/oblivion tunes in the background ❤️
