- From trademark filings to impressions, we've finally made it and it's honestly kind of unbelievable. After sinking over 70 hours into Starfield on Xbox Series X, there is a staggering amount of "main content" still on the table for me to see. While I have yet to fall in love like prior BGS games, I could see myself getting there in due time. The quests, writing, and gameplay stand as a major improvement while some "BGS Purist" elements enter muddy waters. Ultimately, I feel Starfield has met the expectations I've set upon it.

The one major machanic that should have been included are vehicles. It makes no sense we have 1000 planets and a massive spaceship with no land vehicles or hovercraft?!?!?!
@@Ganderlowsome people are saying that on many planets the gravity is lower and you can use your jump pack almost infinitely
with the bags under his eyes, we could tell he wasn't sleeping. That was enough for me.

Probably, but it's still missing the "vastness of space" feeling that it should have had for a game with an 8 year development cycle. It's pretty underwhelming.

The only thing I slightly thought was spoilers for me was revealing that the parents would show up at certain times and specifically name dropping the ship you receive in the quest.

It is honestly the best open world game to date imo. It starts out kinda slow figuring everything out but all in all I'm impressed! The only thing I'm trying to get better at is the space combat, it can be hard af at first. Other than that the game just beats every world game to date bad. I think the negativity behind the game is because it's a Microsoft exclusive and ps fans has done their best to spread bs. For years Skyrim was my favorite game and fallout 4 was good but not witcher 3 good. Since witcher 3 open world has been mehhh honestly but this game imo after playing it all day grinding nothing has came close to what this game is doing.

@@TheKennyboy92I predicted mid 80s. It's currently 90 on PC and 87 on Series X but Bethesda seemed to be very picky with which outlets got review codes so that'll probably come down.
That's still not a bad result for Xbox, I think they'd take that after Redfall.
Not unsurprising considering (a) it's their first new IP in ages and (b) they've used basically the same engine (which is clear from the gameplay).
Hope that they'll switch to a new engine sometime in the future that doesn't immediately make it obvious that it's a Creation Engine-driven game.
I expected a solid 7-8/10, but then again I am a guy who, when seeing the first trailer for Fallout 4, went “oh cool! The mods for this game are gonna be sick!”
Bethesda games are always ground zero for modders. This game will go down as an all time great in a few years

I think prolly the problem with Starfield is that it focuses so much on destinations opposed to *the journey*.
Like in other games like skyrim or fallout there are things to come across on your journey, but with Starfield it kinda feels like there never is a *journey* and its instead just a huge pile of destinations.
That’s an interesting way to look at it, and although I’m very early in to the game, I kind of agree. Still enjoying it, though.

I can really see a potential mod adding more points of interest for whenever you land on planets. I know that will be one of the first I’ll look for is dnd random encounters if there is not enough things to explore in the game.
yeah, unlike Skyrim or FO4 there is like the same 6 recycled random enemy encounters with the exact same enemy placement on each of the Pirate base, Pirate abandoned factory, Pirate infested abandoned ship. etccPlease Bethesda don't add so much over the course of six little years.. You gotta have time to drive your exotic/luxury automobiles ( just kidding bc of the picture of their Maryland Studio parking lot. The absolute worst is all the fast travel and loading screens in this game. "LoadingField"See that mountain over there in the distance? You can load onto it! 🙏😂💀

I have to say that I have respect for this review. I'm not a player of Bethesda games due to time issues, but I do hope to get more into them. With that said, your thoughts and breakdowns gave me a good impression of Starfield and despite the mixed bag of the parts to the game, still makes me wanna try it.

Sorry to hear ACG said nothing of the dead planets surrounded by invisible walls and completely lazy recycled random encounters on them that make FO4's "I've gotten word of another settlement that needs your help" look like cleverly written dynamic subplots compared to this game.

I’m assembling a soundtrack playlist with the greats like Horner and Goldsmith as I think this kind of music will be able to help alleviate the tedium of exploring planets. A separate playlist will involve more synths. I’m glad that the story is excellent. That’s the deciding factor for me.
Seems like he was comparing way to much of his previous bethesda experiences and his emotions got him caught up in not fully knowing how to feel about it. Like being on the verge of dating a hotchick but your still stuck on a previous chick and are confused. I love Mattys info but ACG did a better breakdown of all the attributes of what Starfields got going on
Hearing you say that the quests are amazing is music to my ears. I’m the type of player that needs engaging quests to keep me going, I hardly ever explore off the beaten path. So for me, lackluster exploration doesn’t put me off at all since I’d planned to ignore that aspect anyways 😅

Your point about seeing an a object in the distance, wandering towards it and getting distracted 10 times on the way is such a salient point. Something I never realised I loved about fallout/Skyrim until you vocalised it!

The lack of exploration coming from going "off the beaten bath" is a complete killer for me. It's the main, perhaps only, reason I love BGS as much as I do.
Going from place to place, knowing there's nothing in between you and your destination, is just a huge bummer.

Yeah its my favorite part of these games as well so I was pretty bummed to hear it.
Well, New Vegas also kinda tries to stop the player from going off the beaten path in the beginning of the game and severely punishes the inexperienced players for trying to do so. It's only a few replays later when you actually learn of a couple of ways to get to Vegas/other locations early or simply cheese your way through.
I'm pretty sure that Starfield is going to be similar in this regard. The game heavily implies that you take a specific path in the beginning, but probably also provides certain shortcuts or branching paths for the most observant or experienced players out there.

Thanks for the clear take on Starfield so far. Based on what I've heard from others such as yourself, people may do well to adjust their expectations of Starfield and approach it on its own terms, rather than trying to relate it to past BGS games. In the vastness of space, it would indeed be incredibly rare to encounter some random event or lore just by happenstance. lol

I am definitely ok with the game being more organized quest wise with a focus on story as I tend to get lost easily in other Bethesda games and then I get frustrated. I tend to have a now what reaction to their step out moments, so for me this is good. I will be jumping into it soon! Lots of releases in September I'll be busy!
I’m the same way, sometimes the openness gets boring for me and I put down the game. I don’t know if I’ve ever finished Skyrim because there’s just so much to do, it gets overwhelming. I’m happy there’s a bit of drive to get into the quests.
I'm glad the narrative is strong, I need a good reason why I'm blasting the people I'm blasting, I hope there's tons of factions lore

The fact that you can chat up so many NPCs has me so so excited, that's something I've always wanted to see more of in bgs titles
In the next few years we'll have that in a lot of games thanks to ChatGPT AI technology.
Play Baldurs Gate if u wanna chat up NPCs…..cuz literally every NPC has unique dialogue, down to the animals.
The NPCs are trash. I seen a lady sweeping for an entire day. None of them have a routine or do anything.

10:40 this idea of vast isolation where it breaks the 4th wall is what I am worried about the most. I hate that feeling of barren empty planets where you *KNOW* there's nothing on them and it becomes painfully apparent it's just a video game. I really hope starfield can uphold the immersion to make going to places exciting and avoid that pitfall that alot of other space sci-fi games have fallen into.
At least we will know what planets are barren before we land on them so we don't waste our time If we like, also I hope these barren planets have some good reason for their existence

I think them pulling you to the main quest is a plus. It helps give you a purpose and direction.
Agree completely. New Vegas did that and I feel it's part of what made it so special.

This review made me happy. Thank you Matty. For me the biggest problem with past Bethesda games was the writing. If they managed to make the writing, narrative and quests (main line and side) good, then its an absolute win for me. If the exploration is parried with bad writing then its not worth it.
this isnt a review, this is like watching half a movie and being like im not sure if i can say the movies good because i only watched half (he says this in the first 2 min). Sounds like he rushed a "review" video off while slacking at trying enough to review it. not to sound like a jerk but this comes off as a initial impressions and not a review but he wanted clicks and views on day 1.

I mean it literally says it in the title of the video: this vid is Matty's impressions on Starfield after 70+ hours. There's so much content in this game that he's going to do a review after doing the quests for the other Factions like the Crimson Fleet and Ryujin. Matty said that the thing he loves most about BGS games are the Factions, and since he hasn't experienced most of the Factions in Starfield yet, he could see himself falling in love with the game once he plays thru that stuff.

Just finished the video, and I gotta say thank you for your impressions! I've been really anxious up until this moment, and this put my mind to rest, and I'm definitely more hyped than disappointed now! Most of the issues you bring up doesn't bother me so much in theory, but we'll see how I feel once I get my own hands on the game!

Good review. I didn't get the special edition or whatever so I still have to wait, but the reviews I have seen have made me really excited to play it. One thing that has stood out is that different people are loving or hating different elements and having very different experiences depending on choices made and characters created. I can't wait to dig in and experience it, which really is what you do with these Bethesda RPGs. I basically spent all of last gen playing Skyrim, Fallout 4 and NBA 2K on PS4, so hopefully this hits me just as hard on Xbox.
Almost gave in to the hype last night and bought the upgrade.. I’m glad I decided to wait and watch a couple reviews before spending almost $40 for a few days of early access. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but it sounds like I might get disappointed if I pay extra for early access and then it’s not the second coming of Christ.
Edit: With the multitude of loading screens it definitely sounds like the limited RAM pool in the Series S impacted the game’s design.
I mean it was more than just a few days early access... you also get the DLC and a few other things
I bought it because it includes the DLC which I'll buy anyway.

My favorite part about BGS games has always been the exploration, but I feel like this game wasn’t intended or marketed to give that same feeling. Todd Howard even said at the direct that exploration works differently from a traditional BGS game. He also knew that this game wouldn’t be for everyone. I don’t fault them at all for trying something new and unique for a BGS game, especially when the quests are as good as you say.

Todd himself even said in the GQ review that, like you said, Starfield's exploration is different from prior BGS games and not everyone would like it. Dude was being upfront about Starfield but ppl will still say he was a liar for some reason
@jimmythegamer2231 I dunno man, Todd saying "1000 planets!" every time he talked about the game inherently implies that exploration is a huge and interesting part of the game. "Exploration is different" in no way translated to "but the planets are dead and there's jack shit to do on them, and tbh they're the weakest part of the game".

I’ve been playing early access, and really loving it. I agree that when I applied my fallout 4 “let’s just wander around and see what happens” strategy, it didn’t work as well as when I decided to just follow the main story for a while. And the fact that you have to go to a map and pick a place to land your ship if you want to go somewhere else - that to me is very realistic as to how it might be if I was in an actual outer space environment. Anyway thanks for your take, Matty! I had to login and see what your reaction was cause I know you’ve been holding it in for a while!
yeah we already have self driving cars, it only makes sense the spaceships would be self-landing

Gonna be honest, I skipped to the conclusion part to avoid as many spoilers but it's nice to hear your thoughts in a gist. One thing I found is avoiding trailers and gameplay footage has made me enjoy certain games way more than ever. It's interesting how you say this game will be divided, I can't wait to play it and see for myself. Glad to hear you've enjoyed what you've played so far though, but I hope there's not too much discourse surrounding this. Yeah, I'm trying to stop allowing reviews to sway me as well. Unless they're all really positive like BG3 was initially. When I see neutral-to-bad reviews, I tend to avoid them because I don't want to taint my experience.
Yeah I watched ign review and stopped this one 5 min in. I'm not watching anymore reviews. I don't notice the bad things when playing but when I watch a review I'm looking out for them, and feels like I'm not enjoying the game as much. I can't taint my experience anymore. I hope I love this game.

Great impression video. Thankfully, many of the issues that folks will have can be fixed with mods and updates, which is very important for a game like this.

You gotta remember that a reviewers experience is so much different from our own. While he gets a view of everything I feel like the mindset of having to experience everything by a certain time makes thing more or less enjoyable. I guarantee as matt gets to play it on his time things he didn’t like will become enjoyable and maybe vice Versa. Good review man

Nah Matty has been overhyping this game on his channel for months and now it's here and not absolutely perfect he's disappointed. Every other reviewer ive seen who didnt follow this game like a stalker has had pretty good opinions on it its just Matty. (This is coming from a Fallout hater and a Skyrim enjoyer)

I have a feeling all these reviews are just takes from people who are barely scratching the surface of the game. anything less than 100 hours is just way too soon to experience everything the game offers. Even 200 might be too soon but time will tell as people play it.
Its interesting your take on the main quest and side quests - i heard the opposite with regard to how interesting the side quests are and how boring the main quest was for them.
In addition, someone said they came across a ship that had been hit by solar flares, making them extremely radiated. The player was taking burning radiated damage the whole time.

I always recommend never getting hyped, Which is not the same as being excited I've kept my expectations tempered. And so far it seems more like what I expected which is great because I'm not going to feel unsatisfied
You can still explore, just do like 50% of main story and it will be about the same. As the main story is where you unlock main gameplay features(probably lol)
The fact that they did a 45 minute demo and no story beats were present in the game is insane for an RPG studio.
Instead they focused on updated systems brought in from past BGS games.
When are people going to fucking learn!? This is Bethesda. You think Todd Howard is going to magically change? lmao the hype behind this game was just grasping at straws.
Starfield is the perfect definition of "As wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle".

Lacking linearity of ANY kind is exactly my issue with Skyrim. Im very happy they added at least some linear aspects, it keeps me invested.
Damn I was really looking forward to exploration and named rare/unique weapons and armor etc.

Everything is moving 1000 mph right now. Most critics have rushed through startfield to get a review for clicks. Fans are super hyped. Once the smoke clears and everyone calms down Starfield is going to become loved. Everyone is going to need plenty of time in Starfield before it grows on them.
I noticed that too. They all rush through main quest. This is not how you play a Bethesda game.

I actually think the honeymoon phase will pass and the game will be even more critically reviewed than it is already.

This is the kind of review I like. I am glad I watched it. It really sets my expectations to a more reasonable level.
Well I must say the review period cleaned up some of what you talked about. My enemies had me healing like crazy. They would flank and jump around. Hide and recover and sometimes sneak up on you. I think this is one of the best experiences I have had in awhile. I was passing by a factory saw a ship parked. I hacked the door, and I flew off into space. Now I have 2 ships, so I am seeing where exploring has it's perks. I need to see more of space but I have been having fun exploring one system. And to think there are tonnes more is mind boggling.
