It's why I bought an EV motorbike instead of a 125cc. I've got 8000w peak power and 72v 48ah battery on my electric dirt bike and it's fully UK road legal as well. 0-30 in 2.9 seconds is what I've measured lol and it's restricted at 54mph sadly which is strange as it can maintain that even up a kind of steep gradient.

UK law on them sucks. The only good thing about it is that it's not enforced because our government have underfunded them for the past decade :). I ride my 1500w like I'm on a normal bike and nobody even looks twice. In a rural area like where I live you need to be able to get to the next town really quickly if needed and a quick ebike is perfect for that.

I’ve had the same sized powered ebike kit (not Kirby) on a Halfords pushbike for nearly 5 years and I’ve done 50mph only one time (on private land) just to see what it was like, it was ok but I honestly believe the sweet spot is 27 mph for this type of combination of ebike. Having so much power is great for the acceleration up to the cruising speed of 27mph and it’s very handy for getting out of a potential conflict with another vehicle.

I can get to 40mph on the flat, 45 down slight incline(15.5mph without special effects obviously) running a 52v 20ah battery, 45a peak on 1000w hub motor from 1000w Terradise kit & Risunmotor controller & display combo. Doesn’t sound overly quick but for anyone that isn’t familiar with the availability of speed on a 20kg bike, it’s too much or at least can be.
When I started on 500w with a 15.5mph limiter, it felt great, got up to speed with no issue, battery lasted ages at limited speed etc… that got boring so I removed the limiter and managed 24mph(was 36v at this time) I then shunt modded for more torque and went over the top pulling 1800w peaks which caused me to replace the battery fuse for higher amp as it kept popping.
I then went for a 48v 13ah pack, slightly better acceleration, wasn’t keen on the 7V voltage sag under load but it was fun nonetheless. Top speed at that point was 28mph which prompted me to get a better controller with field weakening which got up to 32mph. Upgraded to a 20ah 48v battery which gave more range and less sag. Then upgraded the controller to a 2000w one with no field weakening, dropped top end to 30mph. Bought the 1000w kit with a better wound hub motor which gave me 35mph top speed. Got the new Risunmotor controller and that gave a little more. Eventually ended up with a 52v battery on the 1000w hub and Risunmotor controller, shit torque for 2kw but nice top speed.
      My point?
If I was to jump straight from no power to 52v I would have definitely killed myself several times over. Start lower speed and work your way up once you’re fully comfortable and competent. My next step is gonna be a shunt mod on the risun controller for more torque; whether my battery can handle it, we will see.
Here’s a question for you though Dude Stuff; do you have any recommendations for low turn motors with a high top speed and maybe high turn motor with great torque but high efficiency and power at low speeds? (Non geared) would be interesting to test the difference at the same power levels.

  • @robintaylor3860

  • @bearmvp99
    @bearmvp99 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

People would absolutely buy this kit including me. Sometimes that power isn't necessary for top speed but rather for people who live in areas with a lot of steep hills. 1500/2000w is good enough for flat roads but when you approach 30° hill it just dies on you. Couple things for you to consider-you should try to find controller that's compact enough so it can fit inside the triangle of M/L frame. In order to do that you should sell batteries with smaller capacity. 24ah is amazing but for most people who commute to work/school etc 20 or even 18ah will be enough. Second thing is not for you to consider but rather for people who buy this kit. UPGRADE YOUR BRAKES. Top speed is not the most important thing when it comes to ebikes if you can't stop it properly. Shimano saints, magura mt5 etc are the brakes you need. Those cheap tektros, old avid brakes will be cooked after few aggressive "15"mph rides :D

    • @JudeTheYoutubePoopersubscribe

There's one hill on my commute where even with 1500w on full power + my leg power I still can't go faster than 14mph up there and it goes on for almost a mile...🤣. I feel like that's the only time where I think to myself I'd like more power.

    • @IDuBStepSZ
      @IDuBStepSZ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Tbh the problem with most of these cheap Chinese DD motors is that there are no options to have different windings.
I'm pretty sure if there as less windings the torque is higher, but top speed is lower for the same amount of volts and amps put in.
Also, where are you that 2000w is dying on you ?
      Must be steep😂😂

That one is definitely OTT. Insurance is really about liability to others particularly in terms of injury. If somebody stepped out of their garden onto the pavement that you were hooning down at a ‘loose’ 15mph and you hit them it would make a tidy mess of both of you so it needs to be mandatory for a machine like that. However, an eBike speed limit of somewhere around 25mph without all the regulations seems to be reasonable to me.

You're spot on with the analysis of 15mph is too slow, I have a 250 Watt mid drive bafang motor fitted to my mountain bike and it's not quick enough to get you out of trouble, I've had many occasions where I wish I had more power just for 10-15 seconds to get me out of danger. On the other hand I still like the 250 Watt because it still encourages me to use it for exercise. It depends what you want the bike for, I do agree 15 mph is too slow.

15mph is a joke, when you can pedal faster. I did well over 40mph going down steep hills in Wales, it feels so much faster. I don't cycle on the side of the road if there's potholes about, that's too dangerous. Drivers complain if you cycle further out, but they also complain if you swerve to avoid a pothole.

the QS273 with a bit of mechanical skill will mount to mtb if you find the right one.
    check out e-bikeguy
honestly a QS205 v3 with statorade and hub sinks for cooling is a real lot of power, will fit mtb just fine.
and Id argue that is enough sickeningly fast, 5T version is like twice as fast as sur ron. with a fardriver ND530 or 680
and those 2000W motors are great, and can get you to top speed.
But with a higher end controller and motor, the pull is strong.

I own a Rize Electric Bike (Blade 2), with a 1000 Watt Bafang rear hub motor and a really great on board programmable computer. In the special "Unlocked" mode, my bike can do 50 km/hr. Even at the locked in limit of 32 Km/hr, the speed feels rather dramatic - Especially down hill. Now, my Blade 2 weighs in @ roughly 90 LBS. They list it @ 85 LBS, but this beast of a bike feels closer to moped frame weight than it does to a regular sports bike. One of the concerns I have about going at high speeds on electric bikes is can the bearings handle such highway speeds ? If you go 40 or 50 MPH on a bicycle frame which was not designed for it, then what can happen besides the possibility of high speed wobble ? Is it possible your front or back wheels could fail ?

A few seconds into the video: No helmet. All dark clothing. Hands constantly leaving the handlebars. Small front brake disk. Untested load bearing capacity on a random donor MTB. Very poor road positioning with a car following. Every point can and will be used by "the powers that be" to ban e-bikes in general. E-bikes really need to be in specific regulated classes. Requiring different levels of insurance, speed rating, frames, geometry, brakes, helmets, lights, mirrors, suspension, etc. It's not all negative: The video was well filmed and recorded. With clear sound and very informative dialogue by an experienced e-biker/motorcyclist. Final note: The European 45kph/28mph "Speed" e-bike class, with pedal assistance and NO throttle is a nice performance level. When the machine is specifically designed to cope with this speed.

15mph is too slow and can be quite dangerous in stop start traffic but on the flip side common sense escapes a growing number of human beings these days. Just because something can do more than 15mph it does not mean we have to do it I consider it as a safety cushion to have more than necessary whether it be a bike/car or time.

How hot are the brakes getting?
It would be interesting to see stopping distances with current brake setup. Maybe take it somewhere out of the way and set up a couple of cones and brake down from 50/40/30. Then see how many times you can brake from say 50 to 40/25/10 before brake fade.
Also, with the bigger kits like this, what are the stresses on the frame over time. Is metal fatigue going to be an issue due to flex. Some might say it is a mountain bike, so OK. I am concerned this is may be too much for a standard frame.
    Stay safe, dude.

Just becarefull as to not shear off the back with that amount of power😂. As ya say mate bicycles arnt designed with a motor inmind.. aluminium is light and kinda strong but not really 4000w power strong, the motor will stretch the aluminium which in turn will compromise the strenth at the back..
So basically one day youll pull the throttle and the back end will snap and the wheel will be flying around erverywhere 😂..
Anyways great video mate 👍 appreciate it

My bike does 40, maybe a tad more with the wind in my back and a tad less up a steep incline. That being said, mtb's are actually made to go *that* fast, or more... the world record for a downhill mtb is 167Km/h.
There is a difference in quality of components, but he was using a stock frame. As long as you stick to the actual known brands, I wouldn't start worrying about the bike until I would probably double the speed I'm going now. Frame would hold that just fine. It's the brakes which would fail, since I'm using stock 2 pot xc brakes, not even proper DH brakes which would be fine.
Most importantly, the component which would fail is without a doubt me the rider. Bicycle infrastructure isn't made for high speeds, not withstanding the 'other traffic' issue. Just because the bike could do it when prepped correctly, and probably I would be perfectly fine riding at a place designed for it, it's absolutely going to put me in a hospital if had an ebike which would do those speeds and I would use it on public roads.
Mopeds due to their accident rate ( and consequences ) were forced to wear helmets here, when they are allowed to go only just as fast as en ebike. Hitting concrete or asphalt with that dome surrounding your brain. while not wearing a helmet, even at 40km/h can end quite badly. 40Km/h is plenty of fast when your bone's are the only structural part trying to stop all your mass from carrying on in the same direction.
Once you're reaching 100km/h, you're no longer in moped territory ( tuned mopeds can but most don't go that far ). I feel like: if I wanted to go those speeds, I should be on something which fits the infrastructure I'm using. I ride my bike with shorts on all the time if it's hot, I wouldn't get on a motorcycle without propper gear on.
Speed alone isn't an issue, it's the infrastructure and fellow users of said infrastructure and the gear you're using.
I actually think most people would be perfectly fine on a 20mph ebike, it matches better with local infrastructure certainly when our politicians finally change the max speed in built up area's to that same ~20mph. It would decrease accidents by so much if all users are going around the same speed as traffic will be much more predictable.
