Never heard someone make so much sense on e-bike law , I’m 70 and my bike has changed my life to the extent my doctor 100% approves for many reasons ! Many thanks for such an interesting subject.
Here in Queensland Australia, I have a 26 inch 1000W rear hub bike for over 3 years now and I have never been pulled over by the police, but I don't attract attention to myself. The way the law is written in QLD, we can use power assist up to 25Km/h(15mph) then you can only use the pedals to go faster, this means I can cruise at 35Km/h(21mph) as long my legs are moving the police won't pull me over. For me the extra power I need is for hill climbing not speed.

@@slimdunkin117 1000w is the sweet spot in power. You don't need a ridiculous controller or battery to power it optimally and can go about 30mph which is more than fast enough on a push bike especially. It's also good enough for hills if you pedal a little bit as well.

the cycle manufacturers cheat and say the motor is rated at 250w but has a 'peak power' of 850w, or even 1250w in the case of the Bosch Cargo Line motor
Completely agree with you, UK law in general is excessively restrictive in a lot of areas under the guise of safety.

If they want all of us out of gas guzzling cars and onto electric vehicles and other things especially bicycles then ebike law needs a serious looking at. Allowing 20mph with a throttle would make 100x more people actually consider an ebike.
Teens on moped are menace enough, don't want them on fast ebikes and escooters.
It's the few that spoil it for the the sensible majority.
@@dereksmith6126 They can get unregulated ones easily regardless. The law isn't magic you know. You could simply make it lower restricted for people under a certain age if that was necessary. This was mentioned in the video from what I remember.

Make sure you pedal as well. If a copper sees you flying along on a bicycle at 30mph without pedalling they are immediately going to know it's not road legal. I've never had police be interested in my 1500w mountain bike.

@@EXPLORINGWITHMATTY get it fixed up and geared nicely so you can pedal it along at 25. When I'm not in a busy area I don't pedal but I do like to help my bike up some of the ridiculously steep hills near my house in Devon.
We need to get a petition together to get the laws xhanged. And start publicly accusing the lawmakers of corporate corruption.
And I would like to see you do some videos on ebike range, maybe while carrying spare batteries in panniers.

Many excellent points raised there Steve. It’s hypocrisy on steroids. Ditch your car, go green they shout. Soon as a credible alternative comes along they want to put restrictions on it. As as ever it’s about money. They realised that e-bikes can be a car replacement but that means less tax for them. America in the main allow 750 watt motors with speed limits in many states around 28mph. This does mean people can actually look at ditching their cars. This country has always been heavily on the side of draconian attitudes when it comes to allowing people more freedom. I agree a clamp down on morons on Surons is needed. These are in many instances the first choice of drug dealers and criminals. They also steal them from each other. This gives the rest who only want a credible form
of transportation a bad name. The 15.5mph nonsense came via EU law. Last I checked we are out of the EU.
We used to be allowed 15.5mph with a full speed throttle before that shit EU law came in. It wasn't good back then either but taking away throttles was dumb.
UK government like any western government gives alot of FREEDOM if you have money to waste like: PRIVATE JETS, SUVS CARS, UNLIMITED HOLIDAY ALLOWANCE ON FLIGHT for the rich.

I wish we were out of the E.U. The big problem I see is that kids and adults will ride E bikes and ordinary bikes on the pavements. In my opinion there needs to be limits for any vehicle travelling on pavements. Like my mobility device that attaches to my wheelchair I am limited to 4mph on the pavement. That is fair to me as the average person can walk at that speed so I am no more dangerous than an idiot in a hurry. On the road it's a different issue.

I tear past police on A40 50 mph speed limit and they don't do nothing as long as your legs are pedalling. I looked over to my right over My Shoulder into the police car and I see two beautiful police woman smiling back at me😅 i love my super fast ebike i built. It always amazed me when im pulling up back at home after a long fast ride!!! So impressive, its like having my own horse (🐎 /🚲)

@@LevelSports don't bother with 500w, I have one, it is not powerful enough, it is not 2x as powerful as a 250w. I have a 500w rear hub one one bike and a 500w mid drive Tongsheng that I installed myself, this is much better for hill climbing whereas the rear hub is faster on the flat.
I am looking at getting a CYC mid drive motor because they are small and can look like a 250w but are powerful for hills. I want to pull a trailer
My issue is with the range . Until it gets to over 100 miles and is throttle controlled I'll not be bothering 👍
It’s a load of old bollocks unless you are going at suspicious speeds that are over 30mph then I honestly don’t think the police have the time or resources to check every e-bike that is on the street, I have an e-bike and my top speed is 16.7 mph and more up to 20 mph if the wind is behind me with my own pedal power.
Totally agree with the CBT passed riders being able to ride up to 1000w and if you have a full motorcycle license..... no limit would be nice. Another issue with e bikes is the weight of the rider. A friend of mine is 10 stone while I am 16 stone..... makes a hell of a difference on a 250w.
That has been my view also cbt, maybe even some kind of licence.
But…… the points from these shouldn’t be shared with cars 😮

@@majordelays4909 you can use any power ebike with a license if you msva it and have it taxed+plated. you will need to follow guidelines so that it is road legal.

With CBT we can ride 125cc which can do up or over 70mph so why not also allow 1000w pedal cycles.

I've nothing against horse riders , but notice how free from regulations they are . Daddy makes the rules . 1 horse power per horse , no age limit, no poop scoop needed and go where you like 🤩

@@pcka12 Dogs have always been here too but there's loads of laws pertaining to dogs, even down to shitting! Horses are aloud to poop wherever and there's no laws on people having to clean it up. But let your dog shit anywhere and you've got 100 eyes on you until you clean it up and if you don't, these eyes will be phoning the council...

You obviously didn't grow up in the countryside, there's nothing like the smell of horse piss in the morning (second only to napalm as you would find out from the 'Cav' in the film Apocalypse Now!).
What you said at 15:00-15:30 about the "lurch" is bang on. I've found that making slow (less than walking speed) tight U-turns on loose gravel or wet grass is the most dangerous, with even minimum pedal assist and at the lowest gear. I'll either set my pedal assist level to zero, or don't pedal at all and use *only* the throttle (okay with Canadian regulations) until I'm back on solid terrain. I think it's the very slight delay before the pedal assist kicks in that messes up my timing and steering.
I'm quite happy with the 500W hub motor, half-grip twist throttle, and 32 km/h speed limiter, on our streets and groomed trails.

If the speed limit was 20mph i think it would be acceptable but any faster than 20mph and alot more people would choose to use an ebike rather than a car and despite the government pushing for greener transport the truth is they dont want people to really ditch cars etc as it brings in to much revenue.
exactly, if we all stopped smoking and stipped using our cars the government woudl be skint insidea month. they get tax from the car sales, tax from the fuel, tax on the makers of the cars, tax on the insurance and even get us to pay the european VAT that we should now not be paying at all... so imagine if no cars , all that money gone.. and gengis khan and his ulez cameras not earning a a penny... they realy dont want us out of our cars. its wh ythey dont want electric scooters. imagine londion with no traffic jams !!!

An ebike uses about 1/20 of the energy of a car, so widespread use of ebikes can do more to reduce emissions than switching to EVs until the grid is fully decarbonized.

I live in Australia and i own a Cube Ebike with the 250w bosch motor limited to 25kph (Volspeed v4 fixes the speed limit) however Bosch actually states it peaks over 600w so yes Ebike laws are stupid here....I also built an ebike with the Bafang 750w mid drive with a 52v battery.... but i still ride at the same sensible pace on either, comes down to how you use it not the wattage..
Just come back from a ride on my converted ebike. It has a 1000w rear wheel motor, a 46v battery, and a twist grip throttle and could be capable of upwards of 30mph, there is a wire which if connected restricts it to 15mph, but is disconnected. Rode a lot on roads but mainly on shared cycle/pedestrian paths. never did more than 17mph, and this was just peddling, I’m 80 so only out for a bit of exercise. Throttle used to get going from stopped and up hills or if a bit of wind. The trick is to keep peddling, even just slowly, just to give the impression.
Thanks Dude Stuff, I agree. I bought an Engwe Pro 2 at 750W. In my hilly area I get 15miles range on a £350 Lithium battery, I've reached 32 mph down a very steep hill. I seriously would not try that if I felt that would be dangerous of injury or death to me or others. It's just getting there quicker with safety in mind. The UK Law is set for pushchairs & prams by political parasites that know what a bike is but have probably never ridden one since 12.
A few years ago I had a work colleague who got so hammered one winter night that he decided to go sledging on a sheet of plastic in the pitch dark. His arm was so badly broken he was off work for three months. And, you know what? We were proud of him. That is the combination of bravery and utter stupidity that made this nation great and I applaud him. On the subject of the law, I try to not ride like a tw*t so as not to draw attention to my bike and that seems to do the job. However, I'm not sure Josh would be able to restrain himself.
Well said geez , 250w is not enough , it barely carries the weight of the bike . I have an Andy Kirby Kit ( 1500 w) which i fitted - its great - i mostly use level 2 and 3 but out on an open road at night when there is no other road users i use level 4 which is pukka - i rarely use level 5 but it is proper handy if you hit a ballbreaker of a hill - I often cycle from Barking to Southend in the summer and get the c2c train back but since i went electric i can make it both ways ( that is 76miles ) not bad ay - i dident half have a sore arse though !! I used a combination of level 2-3 on the way ( 4 on the hills ) and level 1-2 on the way back -The last few miles have very little power in the battery and that is with pedaling all the way - never throttle only- but in my eyes that is still impressive from a 58v battery that costs peanuts to charge . Bang for buck when you compare it to other forms of transport nothing can touch it - it has been proven that a human on a push bike is the most energy efficient mammal on the planet - add a bit of electric power and then we push theory even further - so why are the government so strict on us when climate change and emissions are so important? Its great that you made a video about it - it needs to be sorted - I am in agreement with the 22-25mph cruising speed - it seems to be the sweet spot and therefore a 750w or above should be legalized . I think the reality is that they will loose alot of revenue if more people take the roads on ebikes as they wont be buying fuel or paying road tax or train fares . We must hang on to the few freedoms we still have left and push for more realistic power outputs for the more experienced riders like ourselves . Keep up the good work geez
I rode a non-electric bicycle from Camden Town to Southend and back in one day. Today I can't even ride a return trip of 20 miles. (Mobility issues) and terrain problems. It's not the vehicle that's the problem it's the person in control. Safety Common sense should prevail something most Politicians and PUBLIC EMPLOYEES (CREATE A CRIME POLICE) ENFORCERS DON'T HAVE.
PRIVATE ELECTRIC fold up PUSH SCOOTER for last mile travel "that other public transport DO NOT reach". Should be allowed as they can be folded up just like a child's push chair and carried on said transport.

Good point but it wasn't always like that . At one time you had to have permission and a good reason to go walkies. The church usually controlled wanderers. I think that 1 horse power (750W) with throttle and no speed restrictions makes sense (it'd only do around 20mph) alongside a simple registration system like the rental scooter and a CBT for the riders safety and familiarity. Let's not forget we're on Clown Island in the UK these days with Sunak and crew I don't expect Starmer to do anything he drives an SUV in London......

I'd let riders with a CBT and very basic insurance legally ride a 1000w ebike with 30mph maximum speed. That's how it is in some European countries they just treat them the same as mopeds.

Only problem is that if you're in an accident and are using something that's illegal, I bet it could be costly. Could be caused by someone else, but you will end up paying for it.
Thankfully our overburdened law enforcement is stretched far too thin to enforce any such ridiculous laws.
Totally agree with you 100%. I have a cyrusher xf800 750w and I weigh 95 kg. This is ideal for me as a 250w isn’t worth it. When I’m on the road I take it easy, don’t go over 15mph and always keep my legs peddling even if they aren’t actually powering the bike. Politicians are idiots

If someone walks out in front of you and it's not your fault the law will be all over your bike like a rash, once they find out it's not 250w then the law will come down on you like a hammer, regardless if you didn't cause the accident. But like many on here I agree with 'don't attract attention'. I knew a guy in London that wore a cord jacket with leather on the elbows and a tank-top (imagine 1970's geography teacher) He used to go around London on his pushbike selling certain ''products''😉 it was a while before folks realised they hadn't seen him for some time and eventually we found out he had brought a mansion in Ireland and retired. When I was at school I used to race bikes. I would enter time trials and go as fast as possible reaching speeds in excess of 40mph. Now I'm much older and unable to pedal a bike due to health reasons so I would need a throttle operated bike but its against the law, why? I'm being prevented from doing something that I enjoy and am more than experienced in doing but the law says I can't. I also did motoX as well so I understand how a throttle works but I can't have a electric powered cycle because the law say that I can't. How dumb is that. Nothing would make me happier right now than to be able to enjoy cycling again, the fresh air, the breeze, just getting out of the house for a while, it would mean so much to me. The Government likes to be in control well I would like to be in control of my own life and be able to cycle again. CHANGE THE LAW NOW!
I've got a Giant fathom E Pro, with 85nm of torque, I'm just over 22 stone , and it shifts me of the start very well with a 250w motor.
That's because it's probably peaking at 750w or more to get all that weight of you and the bike moving. All the Bosch motors are peaking at 850w or more which is common knowledge if you just take one look at how many amps the controller is putting out
I have a 1500w ebike kit on my bike with pedal assist and throttle but only do 17mph all the time, only time i go faster is if i need more power on busy roads, the government say on thing but do another, ebikes are a nice fun ride out, but anything faster then 30mph is abit daft, why anyone would wanna do 60mph on a push bike is strange lol unless its a stealth which should require a license, i was lucky to try a 8000w stealth on private land and damm it felt good, reminded me of my motorcycle days

It should be electronic speed control to all cars so they can't do 50km/h in the EU cities preferably gps controlled. That way accident numbers will diminish. When on the highway sure do 130km as no pedestrians are allowed there. E-bikes should also be the same. limit them to traffic road limit 30km/h inside the city and 50km on urban roads. S-pedelecs do 45km per hour (28miles) which is plenty.

No never been pulled over .. they literally don't care.. they don't know enough about it and ATM they don't seem to care enough ATM... I have my ebike for almost 1 year and I ride it everyday.. no pullover .... Literally police have been behind me and nothing ... They don't care
i have a very high powered ebike but i use a cycle analyst controller and a 4 button remote keyfob that can down tune and lock the system into 250 watt and since theres no physical buttons for the police to see ,where it can be changed they have allow it as 250 watt legal ebike .i also have speed limiting on the road ,but can change to full power with one button on the remote ,although i rarely use full power as its faster than most motorbikes

15mph is stupid, get on a non e-bike, say a racer for example and easily cruise at 25pmh, it should be increased in my opinion, at this 15mph limit i have so many car drivers just sitting behind me creeping along when they can easily pass, its just absurd.

Get a 250w hub kit and stick a 52v 20ah battery on it. I doubt you'd ever be able to actually run it dead even if you rode all day long.

I can do over 20 on a road bike for a decent amount of time and I'm not even fit nor do I ride pedal bikes I let the electric do all of the work with throttle lol.
You can build high power light weight bikes these days, ten years ago I used to go out and have fun blasting past riders from the local cycling club, my bike could do 30 mph for 40 miles up hill or on the flat, no cyclist can do that up hills as well, ebikes are a superb thing they are just crippled by stupid legislation
As a bike enthusiast, you have to appeal to the whole spectrum of people. If you can get big fat Barry out of his BMW and onto an E-bike by making it look fancy and go fast, then you've won the game.
Agreed that 250W is too low for an assisted bike but there does need to be a crossover limit to what is classed as a motor vehicle. Perhaps 1000W+, type approval and registration would seem the sensible thing to do. There does need to be type approvals or SVA's for any motor vehicle capable of 20mph+.
the arbitrary power and speed restrictions on ebikes are quite silly. Its an overcomplicated solution to a problem we have already solved a long time ago with speed limits. When driving a car, the laws are in place to encourage safe driving behavior. Whereas the ebike regulations are based on arbitrary maximum power and speed. Thats like saying, "hey mate, if your car can go 80MPH its illegal, if your car uses more than a certain horse power its illegal." - with ebikes its not about behavior at all, its about limiting the technology and preventing mass adoption. If everyone started riding an ebike there would be entire industries going bust. Government doesnt want everyone riding an ebike saving money. They will figure out a way to try and take their slice of the pie through taxes or whatever. And they will limit the usefulness of ebikes by limiting the speed and power arbitrarily. Its all about money and greed and power
The most absurd thing about UK E-Bike laws is that anything that doesn't meet the EAPC criteria is classed as a moped. However, you only need a provisional and a CBT to ride a petrol powered moped but for some completely bizarre unfathomable reason you need a full uk drivers license to ride a 350W pedal assist E-Bike going 16mph. The government clearly just want to discourage e-bikes becoming a widely adopted form of transport, probably because the oil and gas lobby don't like the idea, and because they want to offset all their tax breaks for the super rich by punishing the little man. Anyone making good choices for the health of the whole society deserves to pay less tax.
In NSW Australia they have just increased the max wattage to 500 but the other states are still 250.

an e-scooter isn't far different from the electrical/mechanical design of a mobility scooter/electric bike/trike/kids toys. they turn a blind eye most the time for food delivery electric bikes. its just control! if everyone bought one, no one will use public transport, and the tax missing from the system. you're allowed to buy them all day long (lovely tax again).
the narrative police use is a statistical formula of accidents/deaths associated with e-scooters/bikes and they are nearly the same as a normal bike. I own and use mine regularly and responsibly. that's not to say the number of pullovers I've had over the years and successfully rode away. (Be respectful)!
Police are not the enemy here however if your taking the piss its going to expose you and create statistics for the government to start changing the rules of how we use these machines.
I don't know any manual bicycle rider who can peddle 50mph that has ever been caught for speeding without electrical assistance.
Its seems to be aimed directly on electrically automated vehicles.
The moment you find a little cheat code to save money, there is always some entity that creates finacial conditions on you when you try to save money.

I'm not a seasoned bike rider, but I rember doing a triathlon down the west country-much hillier than my home county. I was easily able to go over 40mph on the downhill sections. Terrifying but exhilarating at the same time. The bike was a 1980's Road bike, no fancy carbon frame/wheels. I agree with speed limit needing to be increased for e bikes. I think the age limit would be one step forward with managing e bike risk.
Age is bad a bad limitor - since when do children carry things that prove their age with them, they dont have licences or cards? Just allow it to be 20mph (32kmh) like in the USA, theyve not had problem with that, so why should the more orderly Europeans (generally speaking). :)
I bought 2 e scooters, loved em at first but after a crash and many many incredibly dangerous, idiots, that constantly try to kill me, cars, buses, BLACK CABS absolutely everyone drives past me extremely fast and extremely dangerously close. I did want an e bike but my experience, with both my e scooters, have massively put me off. I am a respectful, reasonable, safe rider but it don’t matter how safe I am, because others put me in danger.

So many people don't see the real problems about traffic, roads and vehicles. A bicycle, ebike, motorbike, car, lorry or bus they never controlled anyone. The way they are moving it is controlled by the person who is using it. If the person is an irresponsible asshole that's when the problems starts. Many fail to understand that public roads are a piece of land which everyone has to share for the use of getting somewhere. Its not there for idiots to race or have fun. Everyone who's using it should be considerate for others around them regardless of what they use for transport, it doesn't matter if you ride a bike, rolling cheese, wheelbarrow, car or a shopping trolley, it's very important that you know and understand the technical capabilities of it like knowing your acceleration and your brakes. So most of traffic problems starts from mentality.

I have a very old ebike with a throttle & pedal control .It is excempt from the rules due to its age .I think the motor is only 250 w but it will go 20 mph given enough time on the flat .I ride all types of bike but when I am on the ebike other bike users try to tell me it is illegal due to the throttle and get very upset when I pass them sat down not pedaling .Some people seem to have issues with e bike riders .I was shocked at first because I always found the biking community nice ,but on a ebike that changes .
My elderly mother has an e bike with a throttle ,she has brething problems and wouldnt be able to pedal ,but a throttle enables her to ride along with eveyone else .
I have a heavy 250w motor that I've been riding for a couple of years and I agree with most of your points. I find it is just about enough to get around, but the rules around power don't make sense. Why am I penalised as a large guy with 20yrs plus experience, riding a heavy bike for mainly cargo and commuting use. If I took my motor and put it in a road bike and I was a lightweight 16yr old with no experience I could potentially accelerate faster and be a more dangerous rider I have recently unlocked my speed slightly so it will go about 18mph as I find this feels much better when keeping up with traffic flow, I also sometimes lower the top speed when I'm cruising and or have the bike heavily loaded so it's more comfortable.

The problem is electric bikes got to the point where people used them as a replacement for small motorbikes. There was a guy I used to see on one going to work doing 30+mph barely pedaling, at that point it's just a motorbike and should require a license and insurance.
I mean what if it was a road bike cyclist doing 30mph or what if that same guy was pedaling is your view just about tax envy? My suggested law would be more along the lines of 20 - 24mph limit rather than power limit. Although only bicycle style not enduro electric motorbikes

To be fair the difference is the experience of the rider. A cyclist that can sustain 30mph unassisted is going to be used to the challenges that speed can bring from stopping distance to predicting other road users. Anyone, for the first time doing 30 everywhere on an assisted bike could cause problems.
But, you get idiots on both sides and regulation doesn't stop dumb people doing dumb things.
@@DudeStuff Your average cyclist isn't going to be doing 30mph constantly like a lot of ebikes will. I never mentioned tax and I honestly couldn't care less about it but I think people using the road should be trained and have insurance so everyone is covered if there is an accident.

Completely agree - ebike laws must be liberalized to save civilization and get off fossil fuels ASAP. It is a huge solution to our problems by reducing pollution, car use and ownership.
250W is pathetic. My homemade ebike is 2kW and does up to 30 mph. That's a sweet spot for me, and serves me well over the last 8 years. Luckily I don't live in UK anymore.
It is antisocial and irresponsible behaviour that should be outlawed, oh wait, I think we already have plenty of laws for that!
I ride with consideration and respect for other users of bike paths and trails and had no issues, but then I'm a responsible adult that loves his ebike, ditched fossil fuels and saving a fortune!

15.5mph speed cut out is dangerous for a 25kg ebike, I've been in situations on roundabouts that could have been avoided if the bike had a bit more top end. I'm not saying it needs to be a lot more maybe 22-25mph. It's what made me derestrict my old levo with a planetary gear for the speed magnet. Sold that got a different brand, which can be desrestricted with a chip. It's gotta be a reversable process that won't goof my warranty.
For off-road, hitting the limiter just before you hit the lip of a jump is also bloody dangerous.
Wouldn't have to put up with any of this with sensible laws..
Used to have cycling proficiency tests in schools, why not do them for e-bikes? The laws at the moment are insane, but that's not surprising. It's cheaper for me to use my car than travel by train, the government love the fuel taxes, they don't want people having an alternative.
i also find it quite dangerous to have to pedal when turning left or right especially after coming to a complete stop at a t junction or a roundabout then having to start moving again with traffic behind and to the left and the right and the fact that the electric motor without power going to it is adding resistance making it feel like your cycling through thick mud causing you to move very slowly it causes you bring the pedals dangerously close to the road surface it's happened to me quite a few times at a t junction and one of those times the pedal caught the road and caused the bike to swerve into the oncoming traffic it scared the crap out of me mainly because the pedal assist decide to kick in just at that moment when I was facing head on to the oncoming traffic
Totally agree I'm disabled and can't peddle and 12 to 15 mph you can't stay stable and wobble and cannot get out of the drivers who don't give us room top speed should be 25mph so u can remain balance and safe and move away from careless drivers u can't stay in a straight line safely when cars are 3 to 4 inches from your handlebars thats why motor scooter dose 30 to 40 mph to go slower is dangerous because traffic can't be bothered to wait at a slower speed and push past to close or knock you off your byke well said and well put
My controller is only 48v 20a. If I want to feed more to my hub motor do I need a different controller? If so what should I look at to upgrade to?
I'm old now but in times past I managed 50 mph on tandems and 40 mph on bikes. I used to commute 50 miles a day, average speed 20 mph in a hilly area, I could cover 180 miles through the welsh hills in 12 hours. I've tried an electric bike and was impressed but to buy one and restrict myself to 15mph would make me cry. I use the car instead but the thought of getting a 1kw electric one with 250w stickers on it certainly sounds an attractive position and hasn't yet been rejected.
Go for it.. I don't know what your definition of "old" is, but I'm pushing 60 and still riding up to around 100km per day around Europe with my 2kW ebike for the last 8 years.

@@afreeman1980 Pack as much as you can into it - I suffered a broken pelvis in a right hook with a taxi, bedridden for 3 months and all I could think about was being able to ride again.... Likewise in hospital with covid 3 years ago on oxygen for 6 weeks waiting for the end. I made my peace but missing my ebike and the sun and wind in my hair was tough, but I pulled through and am still keeping on keeping on - I wish many long and enjoyable miles for you too!
I'm 16st and I'm literally only holding off getting an e-bike because I can quite easily hit over 19mph with my legs. So not only will I have no assistance, but the overall bike weight is higher, for all the ebike equipment I'm carrying around while it's not doing anything.

I live in rayleigh essex im 63, and cycled all my life, the hill in my area are just to steep for my old worn out legs, so i brought the engwe 750 watt pro, i love the bike i can go to places now without worry about the hill, i still have it at setting 3, and do 15/16 mph only use setting 5 to go up really steep hills.
I have to use the throttle just to get going i would have no chance if i had to stop up a hill then peddle, the bike is so heavy, i think if everyone got more powerful e bikes, the police would give up stopping everyone as its to time consuming!
The thing is if im only doing 14mph and peddling my bike, they have no need to stop me, if they did what would they do?

Bosch publishes the max wattage (600w)of its "250w" mid-motor. This is widely used in bikes in the UK. As you no doubt ow know, the government has now consulted users and interested groups over changes to: increase motor power to 500w; and to add a throttle.

I would be very interested in a video on E-Bike range. I have been disapointed by the reality of range compared to stated range, also range should be based on average weight rider at max power and not on an anerexic doing 99% of the work on a flat runway with zero wind

Agree on all points, 20-25mph would be more sensible and 1000 watt motor would be more realistic. I tend to get the impression that the law was written by some midget riding a bike on city streets in some flat area of the country with no wind. Here in the NW Cumbria, the reality is, its hilly, you get strong head winds down the coast and I am a taller and so heavier rider, 250w isn't a realistic option. I have an e bike but tend to ride a non assisted road bike, also ride motorcycles so have a good idea about speed and the capabilities of power ratings, especially in this area.
I got my self a Fildo T1 cargo bike as i need a bike to get me up hills its a 750 w that only goes around 15mph that speed is ok for me i have Disability's and needed to get up hill i had a Fildo d2 250w that would not get me up hill i have server COPD just one thing from a long list of illnesses had a Tumour removed from my brain last September i love the bike i got it to get me out in the fresh air i did not want to get a mobile scooter as you can not go off road like up a canal or fields and i think it looks good i don't have to peddle i just use the lever i don' go on the road unless i have to we need bikes like this to help us get out and enjoy what life we have left hope this bike law will change as more people like me can still get out ATB This is a Fantastic video thank you very much if i get stopped and lose me bike not sure what i would do ATB
Voi hire scooters are capable of 26mph. (local authority approved e-scooters that are road legal)
so if it's ok for those to be that speed (bearing in mind, nobody rides them wearing a helmet) i don't see why e-bikes shouldn't be any different.

Now we have ULEZ in place, London Mayor Sadiq Khan should be prompting e-bikes with throttles. This would shorly get more riders/commuters on the road and further reduce air pollution.
Has to be type approved. They confuse people putting a spec, even if it meets the spec it not approved and not legal.
We need to improve the battery's and get rid of the li-ion to many fires people are getting the wrong batters over charging them charge them out doors cool down before using them .
