    Blood Pressure Control | How Carbs are Raising your Blood Pressure | Sodium Myths & Water Retention - Thomas DeLauer:
    A meta-analysis, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, looked at 7 studies involving more than 6,000 people and found that salt restriction increased the risk of all-cause mortality in those with heart failure (1)
    Another review, published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, found that sodium reduction resulted in a 1% decrease in blood pressure, a 3.5% decrease in hypertensives, but there was a significant increase in plasma renin, a 2.5% increase in cholesterol, and a 7% increase in triglycerides (2)
    The researchers concluded that the slight reduction in blood pressure was overshadowed by these antagonistic effects, and that sodium restriction may have net negative effects at a population level
    Sodium Overview
    Salt is composed mostly of sodium and chloride and we can’t live without either - sodium and chloride play vital roles in nerve conduction, muscle contraction (including the heart), digestion and blood pressure
    Our body regulates their concentrations so they don’t get too high or too low
    Sodium’s concentration in our blood is maintained by water and the kidneys job is to maintain this concentration
    Consume more salt and your kidneys will excrete it into the urine along with water to flush it out - Consume less salt and the kidneys will hold on to water to maintain the concentration
    So when we consume salt, the blood pressure goes up slightly as the kidneys work to maintain the right concentration and vice versa
    This has given us the belief that reducing salt in our diet will lower our blood pressure, which it will to an extent, but reducing salt in your diet has a minimal effect on lowering your blood pressure
    Because salt is so vital to your health, your body will hold on to it in your bloodstream so it doesn’t get too diluted
    *The only instance when salt can lead to hypertension is when there is an imbalance in the ratio between the salt and potassium in the diet*
    Carbs (Sugar) and Blood Pressure
    Hyperinsulinemia
    When the body produces too much insulin in response to a higher-carb diet, it causes blood pressure to increase
    Hyperinsulinemia raises blood pressure, in part, by decreasing sodium and water excretion in the kidneys, and directly vasoconstricting blood vessels
    Insulin resistance
    As insulin levels rise, insulin resistance eventually develops - if insulin receptors are blunted and the cells grow resistant to insulin, magnesium can no longer be stored, so it passes out of the body through urination
    When magnesium levels are too low, blood vessels are unable to fully relax, and this constriction raises blood pressure
    And this creates an imbalance in sodium and potassium (which increases blood volume) and calcium and magnesium (which causes arterial constriction), driving up blood pressure
    Nitric oxide
    100% of fructose is metabolized in the liver, and the byproduct of fructose metabolism is increasing the liver’s production of more glucose and the byproduct of uric acid
    Fructose elevates uric acid, which drives up blood pressure by inhibiting the nitric oxide (NO) in blood vessels - NO is regarded as the most important vasodilator and helps blood vessels maintain their elasticity and, as such, NO suppression leads to increases in blood pressure

    I've been struggling with stage 1 hypertension for years. I've had multiple doctors advise me to simply cut salt (DASH Diet) and walk more. Learning the truth in this video has made me doubt whether I can trust anything a doctor tells me. It's infuriating that you spend a small fortune to get bad advice from a false expert in the doctor's office.

      I’m just about to stop keto and try the dash diet… is it a waste of time! 6 months of keto and my bp has skyrocketed to dangerous levels!! My nurse thought I was having a “cardiovascular episode” and now dr has me on 2 high bp pills… only changes I’ve made is I’m doing keto, and increased sodium and potassium with lots of leafy greens. I’ve lost weight… how am I closer to death now than before I did keto?!!!

I first tried a low salt diet, but just like you said, it only had short term results. Then I digged deeper into diets and came across the Keto diet. My dad and I did the DASH diet, and we did see a reduction in his BP. But, I also did find some studies published on doing the low carb-high fat version of the diet, which cut out the fruit juices and such. Participants saw a greater reduction in BP with that version all around, and the amount of sodium expelled in urine was the same for DASH and the DASH LCHF diet.
    So what we ended up doing was reducing a lot of that bad sodium, upping more of the potassium, reducing the amount of fruit juices and smoothies we consumed. Dad has been seeing BP averaging around 120-130 compared to 140-150.

    The "how it works" presentations work very well for me, and as of November 2018, have helped me lose some 75 pounds since March of 2018. My take from this video is about hyperinsulinemia, and is outlined as follows:
    carbs increase insulin;
    insulin causes kidneys to retain sodium and water;
    additional insulin increases insulin resistance;
    insulin resistance prevents absorption of magnesium and potassium;
    carbs increase nitric oxide;
    nitric oxide increases blood flow;
    increased blood flow tightens arterial walls;
    heart rate increases, blood pressure increases.

    LOVE THIS VIDEO! I get so fustrated with working in modern clinical medicine sometimes; it is overall operating on old information and there is such a lag of new evidence and best practice being implemented as standard practice! Thanks for always sharing good info Thomas and for sharing references!

      Same here. I'm in Dietetics school right now, and my education seems only half evidenced based, the other half comes from real researchers and scientists on the internet. The things I learn for free are more valuable, how sad is that? I'm tired of the U.S. capitalist/ferengi model. LoL.

      Open your hand and look at it, that is a safe portion size to eat if you're spreading your meals out to 3-5 meals a day, the hand/palm size is a safe way to measure. If you're doing OMAD or IF I'd increase size just a tad-bit more. But most importantly, listen to your body. If you're getting tired after a meal, you might be eating to much.

      800 grams of veggies a day is ideal. :)

      I eat MASSIVE veggies and do OMAD 5x per week with gym 4- days per week (fasted). I am in CONSTANT ketosis and burning body fat like an industrial furnace. EAT ALL THE VEGGIES YOU CAN - its mostly good fiber to feed our gut microbiome organisms (that reward us with super good short chain fatty acids for gut cells and reward mood hormones to brain to signal satiation too). The veggies also are pretty dense source of micro nutrients and certain non fat absorbable vitamins. I eat 10 cups a day of veggies sauteed and reduced down in coconut oil. ghee and/or natural non cured bacon drippings for flavor. Totally ketogenic and healthy. You are doing the right thing. But if still not hitting ketosis regularly then do some morning exercise (walk, move etc to circulate lipids and oxygenate blood - super healthy). Even if you are not showing deep ketosis you are still burning LIPIDS predominantly not glucose.

    thanks for the explanation, now I need to watch it 10 more times. Complex? My doctor gave me blood pressure meds that had no impact on my blood pressure 144/90 higher. He added Metformin for blood sugar, eat less carbs, its great. Doctors don't tell you why or what happening, etc. I have a hard time maintaining perfect pressure and sugar. Hungry all the time. Seems like different things, but the related.

    Hypothetically speaking of course. Lol
    Several times a week I make a concoction of lemon, lime juice, and apple cider vinegar with a small amount of ground ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, cream of tartar, and pink H sea salt.

    Help please. How do I do a Keto diet to reduce my blood sugar without loosing weight? I'm 5"2' 111 lbs and I exercise. I'm not at typical type 2 diabetic, my family has MODY mature onset diabetes of youth. We were genetically tested and are all very trim. I started Keto, reduced all my tested blood sugars and got off my night dose of Lantus, which was only 10 units, because my blood sugar climbed at night. I'm just on one medication I hope to ditch too. Keto is definitely working for me, I just don't want to fade away. I'm also an RN preaching away to my family. Ha Thanks to all who answer.

      @Naveed Ahmed Thomas did a video on dry fasting, as a more advanced form of fasting. In it he said that during a dry fast don't even take a shower if possible try not to get water on the skin. So I dare say to do a dry fast you would have to do it on your day off and a day when you pretty much can stay in the house and do nothing.

    my blood pressure has gone up since going low carb/keto, coincidence? Who knows? I went my whole adult life not adding salt to anything, now add salt the last 1-2 years ago since really dropping carbs drastically (and upping good fats). My blood pressure was always good before despite a busy/stressful career. I retired 15 months ago, no worries whatsoever, eat low carb, some days strict keto, I IF about 18:6 5 days a week, very little alcohol (2 drinks a month, maybe), have great blood work including glucose, cholesterol, etc. yet the past 9-12 months its difficult to get my diastolic to around 80, mainly sits around 100. I am not considered overweight (177cm/77kgs, 54yo), I don't have inflammation (absolutely no pain or niggles anywhere), I rarely get a cold, I have clear skin/super healthy hair, I don't have severe menopause issues (Id say very mild), I am not Insulin Resistant, I take quality bioavailable mag and pot daily, so I am really at a loss as to why my blood pressure is high. Any ideas?
