I once saw a lady across the street and it is the most amazing experience I've ever had with fashion which is ridiculous because I only saw her from a distance and I didn't even get a good look at her. She was wearing a dark green, poofy (like she was wearing petticoats), Victorian-looking dress with a knee-length, dark green leather trenchcoat. Her hair was in a bun and she has a small-ish little vintage hat thing (the type you use as a fashion piece, not to cover the sun) and she had on old-looking heeled shoes with a buckle. Best of all, she walked with a cane.
I'm not sure what it was but she had such grace, she floated instead of walked and her posture was incredible. I only saw her for a few seconds and it was several years ago now but I've never forgotten her.

I was at the Koroneberg Fair the other day (my second fair in something approaching appropriate faire costume) and I swore for a moment that I had walked by Bernadette Banner in a red ensemble with yellow hat and girdle). I must say, the best thing about allowing myself to develop a personal style may be that I end up spending much more time around people with personal styles of their own. Seeing other people just... openly enjoy themselves... it's an absolutely fantastic experience.

I had an experience simular to. When I was at the airport, I saw a lady talking on the phone ans she was wearing a 1950's vintage outfit! She had those puffy dresses and her hair was styled as the 50's.

I dress as vintage as I can with little money (Im a teenager so im a bit tight on cash) and still it makes me really happy when old people smile or wave at me because usually I look 1950's. One old lady said I remind her of herself in highschool and things like that make me really happy and I forget all about any weird looks people give me. I hope I never change my mind about the way I dress, I feel great and look great and I'm not afraid of what people think, or if I "look like their grandma". I take that as a compliment
Edit: now im a goth but i still draw large inspiration from vintage fashion (especially victorian), if youre into any kind of alternative or vintage fashion, i still think thrifting is your best bet

Its a cultural trace I think. We are somehow hardwired to underestimate ourselves and undervalue our achievements. Coming to Britain was such an eye opener for me, so I kinda know where does it come from. I guess that is the reason so few Polish pp get successful in the West. Sad but true..

    • @hyzop3719
      @hyzop3719 7 ปีที่แล้ว +272

I agree that she's overdoing this a little... but generally in Poland it's in a good taste to do it. That means that you're not a snob and it doesn't necessarily mean that you feel insecure, it's just a social convention.

    • @ageofaquarius9841
      @ageofaquarius9841 7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

This is exactly what I am saying. Overdoing? Well, its downright putting herself down for no reason, really. She is absolutely nice nice girl as we judge by comments here which are mostly positive. We Polish people don't believe in ourselves, we have a very hard time thinking about ourselves : hey I am OK! But there is hope..we just need to work hard on that mental glitch to overcome it because hell WE ARE OK!

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1212

Age of Aquarius I think you're mistaking self deprecation with being honest. I don't like those looks and I find them funny, why should I pretend it's otherwise? Just so the viewers feel better? Polish people are, above all, an incredibly honest nation. When we say "how are you", we're actually curious to know. We don't say we're ok if we're not. We don't smile seeing someone we don't like. We don't pretend we're not tired or pissed when we are. Sure, it can be annoying, as you probably know, especially in day-to-day situations, but overall it's very refreshing and liberating, and something I miss here in the UK

Most the time if I 'try' or go half and half, I am called a hipster or something else derivative of that term by others. I could only imagine adding sexism to the mix of responses. I got into vintage style during late high school, once I had lost off my baby fat. I guess I really felt alienated from my peers and the "good old days" appealed to me, also because of my interest in history. I usually pin curled my hair but wore only vaguely vintage inspired clothes. After high school, my mental health degraded so I lost the energy to look vintage, though I kept the interest. Now that I'm done with university, I'm thinking about going back.

When I was 7-8 I only wore green, when I was 9 I was very goth for a 9-year-old. After that I calmed down for a few years and then went full goth at 12-13, then I went to hippie for a year and when I turned 15 I went alternative. At 16 I only wore whatever I found in my floor and at 17 I started finally finding my own style. Now I'm turning 19 and I wear whatever I want, mostly retro. It's funny how I went through all these styles and remember I always wore something retro, whatever my style was.

I live in Hawaii. The pressure to conform is pretty intense, I've actually had department heads tell me exactly what to wear to set, and instruct me to not wear something specific that I like because they claim I'll be too hot (like I'm just a silly lil woman who can't gauge her own body temperature) I ended up just converting my clothes to all black because I was so pissed off with the pressure of everyone trying to control me. I mean. I've even been sent home because my nail polish wasn't the color of natural skin pigment. Anyway, I eventually started wearing whatever I want and when they would send me home, I'd happily spend the time in my studio, leveling up my skill. Consequentially, I became so good at what I do that production won't send me home anymore, they just scold me instead. But I let them talk and just do what I want anyway because there's something far more powerful in embodying a "f**k you!" rather than saying it :)

Thank you for clarifying that it can take a long time to transform one's style and wardrobe to vintage because I'm in the same boat where I cannot afford vintage or vintage style clothes, and I am also insecure about changing my style suddenly. Also, I cannot just throw away all the clothes I have as that's wasteful, so its a very gradual slow change. You've actually given a perfect explanation of how I feel and where I'm at with my style at the moment. Also where I live, we do not have many thrift shops or any I know of at all, and it makes things difficult.

@infinityrose92 very true, I believe it's very important that adults allow their kids to find themselves through clothes and other ways even. The type of clothing a person wears I find is really good at telling u a lot about the person. A side note I even think the furniture a person chooses for their house often says a lot about them as well for some reason lol😂

I started wearing vintage my freshman year of high school. I was experimenting a whole ton and because I was starting in fashion, I looked ridiculous, so obviously a lot of people laughed at me. I ended up changing my style to more grunge chic (I guess?) for my sophomore year of high school (to try and fit in with the crowd) as well as the beginning of my junior year, but as my school career continued, I discovered the vintage again and decided to get back into it. I had a much better sense of style at that point, so I was able to study the look of vintage a whole lot more and now, people compliment me at school all the time. So it took a lot of trial and error, but I am a lot happier with it now.

That day came for me when I was 19 years old, and I'm 51 now, and I have yet to tire of being my own person. Keep dressing in vintage. You look great. Thanks for making the cool videos. Cheers. :D

Lovely honest video. I totally understand the struggle of long historical hair or shorter vintage hair, I recently cut my hair short and I don't know what I'll do when it comes to historical stuff now.
I have always loved clothes with a story, so that started as princess dresses, then when I was 5 I fell in love with Audrey Hepburn so I had black velvet dress which made me feel like I was her in Breakfast at Tiffany's, in my early teens then I liked gothic victorian inspired style so I used to wear edwardian blouses with long skirts and a top hat though because I was reading lots of victorian literature. I eventually started historical sewing and at the same time I started wearing more colour again and vintage clothes.

I'm on my third year doing vintage. It was always something I've wanted to do, but yeah I never thought I would be able to. Some life changing events happened and I just decided I was going to do what I wanted. I m far from fully there, still figuring out my personal vintage style, and clothes are expensive, especially for a college student. I've got a couple of reproductions in clothes and makeup, altered some thrift finds, and was lucky enough to find this cute hat from the 40s and a vintage pair of gloves that were hardly worn. Since I live in a small town I can't get away from the comments, but thankfully I have a few people who actually enjoy what I wear. One being a teacher, actually on campus I have several who wait to see what I'm wearing that day.

I am from HK and now in my year two of my university study. I hv been caring so much about how people dress and also myself, even now, and will get worried if I look strange that day. So I can somehow relate to your feeling back then. Before getting to vintage dressing, I was in a stage of wanting to dress with that, but daring not do it. And not until I met my girlfriend who dare dress in very colour-catchy way and loves to say “this is me. So what i am dressing represent me. Nothing to be ashamed of”, i had not dared to try on a vintage clothes. So now sometimes I still think I am not doing good enough in dressing in vintage style, but I will seriously look for the reason that make me look not good enough. In short, i think confidence+ acceptance to yourself who sometime fail in matching outfits+ serious examination on what’s wrong with the outfit= a strong mind that makes you on the track of exploring more possiblities in fashion while making yourself able to dress what you want or more

When I was growing up, within circles of Polish youth of the late 90s and early 2000s it was seen as a trait of a "poorer" (financially) person to wear vintage because of the incredible (and still persisting) focus on the west and "American fashion", which didn't embrace "vintage" and "retro" styles until the mid-2015s really. So because of that, people usually dressed in styles evocative of Hollister/AE catalogues and very rarely something more so like Urban Outfitters today. I liked a lot of older styles that were hand-me-downs from older siblings and older relatives, and I remember guys picking on me saying I got my clothes from the "PCK" (Polish Red-Cross; organization which helps the less fortunate).
I'm glad that now kids and youth probably don't have that problem anymore, but people in Poland are generally quite judgemental so I can understand how your transformation really did take years---because for others in other places (i.e. Berlin, London, NYC) it would probably be much faster of a transition, only because of the acceptance of "different styles" and plethora of great resources for experimentation (second-hand shops, specialty boutiques, etc)

Heya Karolina, thank you for sharing your vintage story - it really resonated with me. I've always had quite an eclectic style and started collecting vintage pieces from charity shops/second-hand stores since I was 14. I really related to what you were saying about how vintage clothing attracts a lot of attention and, unfortunately, not all of it is welcome. These days, I struggle to "dress down" (when it comes to style, I'm a more is more kinda gal) and I do get funny looks from colleagues, classmates, and strangers. Like you, I hate drawing attention to myself, but I also have this passion for vibrant prints and vintage wear that does exactly that. I find this particularly challenging because of some of the responses it triggers in people around you, especially when it makes others feel "underdressed". I hope that others in the world will realise that it isn't necessarily vast amounts of confidence, vanity, or attention-seeking that inspires us to wear vintage garments but instead, it is a love for beauty and creativity centred around an appreciation for by-gone times.
P.S. I love Edinburgh! I'm at a university that's about an hour away and whenever I'm in Edi I always try to squeeze in a trip to Armstrong's vintage on Grassmarket - they have such a great collection!
Love you and your channel - hope you are safe and well

Oh, why can I only like this video once??
Your style is amazing and very encouraging. I'm on that stage where I'm trying to stick to what we could call the classic stuff. I've always liked a little bit of this and that but of course (as anyone who's only 21 years old) I've never managed to create a consistent look. I'm getting rid of loads of shit (I had clothes from when I was 12 years old) and trying to get a gender neutral classic look. The problem is I feel way too akward wearing shirts, black pants and loafers instead of jeans, t-shirts and sandals unless it's a somehow formal occasion. Even though I moved a couple years ago from my hometown to the huge capital (I'm living in Buenos Aires now) where people is more used to seeing different looks and styles.
Summer and the warm temperatures of spring make it more difficult to achieve my desired look. Things would be different I guess if I lived somewhere with a colder weather 'cause I feel the look I want to get is easier during the winter. I am more into a kind of dandy look (if that's something) and very very slowly getting nearer.
I feel conditioned very often whenever I have the opportunity to dress up a little bit by the different look the people around me is going to have. I find myself all the time asking my partner how dressy is he going to be because I just don't want to be looked at as a weirdo. I'm glad you shared your experience. It's great to see other people's paths even if they don't have the exact same style you're looking for.
I've always felt some kind of admiration to the beauty you show and it's nice to see where the stunning person you see has started.

I don't get why this comment section was so sensitive when Karolina posted this video, y'all make it seem like she completely hated herself and I was waiting to be shocked but all I got was some funny reactions to cringey old pictures. Everybody's concept of cringe is different, she may have looked cute in her teenage years to most of you but she didn't like her style back then and has the right to it. I roast my teenage years worse than that so I was expecting this level or higher of self depreciation lmao.

I've not been studying History of Fashion in a systematic way but I am really passionate and got caught up by your videos, you're fun and I think you're also very competent. I wear vintage myself though I gave up on a "real" retro-looking style because it made me feel old. I started mixing up instead and now I think I got to have my own hybrid style, and I love it, I feel good and self-confident. Beside feeling unique there is also the sustainability issue, that I think it's very important: big fashion brands produce tons and tons of textiles every day and these clothes go everywhere and so often they only last one season cause after ten times you wear them they are stained and shapeless. I feel guilty about buying these clothes, I would love my wardrobe to be 100% sustainable and I'm working on that. That's also why I feel good wearing vintage, it's a matter of quality too.
Keep posting good contents, kisses from Milan xxx

10:00 / 10:45 I actually really love this outfit! To me, you look like a really powerful woman from the late 1960s/ early 1970s!! It’s a beautiful look! Also you are so gorgeous at 11:35, a fashionable 70s movie star on her day off💕

You're learning to be fearless in improvising your look and that takes time. Ultimately you want to please yourself and I greatly admire that. I'm not a vintage dresser (yet) but could see myself doing it somewhat even though I'm older than you.

I'm happy so many people pointed it out, but you looked completely normal & pretty in your old photos. The everyday outfit with sweaters and jeans? That's... the basis of most college students wardrobe, me included. The dresses? They were super flattering, imho! Your taste clearly changed and evolved which is valid, but honestly, the amount of self-criticism made me kind of sad!

I loved seeing you grow up! Loved the dress w/your Mother's jacket..very flattering. The photo with your hair inside the turtleneck is really pretty, the setting and the pose are great. I think you were very brave to live the most comfortable way you wanted. You felt most comfortable in vintage and you found the courage to do that. Not many people can do that and you did! Congrats!

I feel very connected with your story, I started changing my style in high school ( on summer holidays), with a kind of mixture with some of my normal clothes with another vintage pieces like long skirts. With the process I can naturally use whatever I like.

You are hilarious! I love your videos. ❤️I enjoy the evolution of your style and that you just do what you like. It’s refreshing. Although you really shouldn’t be hard on your younger self. Everything you did brought you to this point. It’s a great timeline. XO

Is weird men are attracted to vintage style where you live, 'cause where I live it repels them 😂

Classic, more exposure is boring, leaving less to the imagination. More covered is more exciting, imagination is everything.

Portret w sukience wygląda całkiem uroczo, wcale nie masz takich strasznych rąk :D Ja mam brzydkie ramiona i już to trochę zaakceptowałam. Świetny film. I pięknie Ci w takiej fryzurze :)

I went almost completely vintage over the summer before I began college. So I took a lot of vintage clothes with me to school. When I didn't fit in to my new social environment, I slowly gave it up, for the most part. I remember coming home for Christmas, with my vintage coat. My sister had gotten a new winter coat...and suddenly, I really wanted a new coat instead of my old coat. That's when I really gave up vintage. I'm so proud of you that you've stuck with it. Go YOU! Love your channel. Love listening to you.
I'm the one whose mother and you look exactly the same....so somewhere back in the generations, we must be cousins of some sort!

I just found your channel and love it! I am plus size 18 so have not dared trying on vintage because of fear I won’t fit anything. Instead, I buy all my retro style clothing from the various retro recreation stores like: Tiger Milly, Pretty Kitty, Lindy Bop etc. My wardrobe is stuffed full of retro dresses now. I still have a couple of items that are jeans in case I need it but I wear with cardigan and hair in headscarf so sort of retro ish. I am disabled and walk with a cane or four wheel walker which I crystalized because they are ugly. I am 35 but been disabled with spine injury 5 years and felt people staring at me when I used mobility aids. So I decided to give them something to look at by dressing and doing my hair and makeup retro. Then I can tell myself they are looking at my retro look and not the fact I walk with a cane. I do get stopped often which is nice with people complimenting my look. I wish I could wear vintage but instead I recently bought a sewing machine a lots of retro patterns or redesigned for modern figure retro patterns. I am trying to learn how to make retro / vintage style slowly with my sewing machine. Your videos have. Inspired me to explore more vintage looks :)
