      I question the dodge mechanic, because in the Last of Us there was no dodge mechanic. In harder modes of the first game if you were spotted you had to either run away and hide, or try to fight your way on limited resources where either you die or you come out with depleted resources, then have to deal with that for a good deal of time and encounters where if you were spotted and caught you were basically dead. Basically speaking, if you made mistakes in the first game on harder modes you were punished big time and better off restarting that section, and smart play was rewarded.
      Is there dodge spam in the harder modes of Part II making them much easier than the first game?

      Could have told the same story and kept the character consistent with the version we knew of him from the first game.
      Imagine: Joel gives her a fake name, then when Ellie calls him by his real name when she gets there. They knock Ellie out. Joel dies defiant and with his head high. Then Ellie thinks she is responsible, and transfers that guilt onto Abby.

    The companion AI is leaps ahead of what it was in the original game. I played it on Hard and had very few instances of immersion-breaking. In the prequel the companion would run in front of enemies but that rarely occurs here. Companions will also help you unexpectedly like stealthily taking out an enemy for you if you encounter a two-man patrol. Dina also does a solid job of mirroring your position when you're hiding too.

      Think of Watchmen. It blew comics' world back then. It also resulted in some authors and editors who really didn't get why it worked, thinking all was in the deconstruction tropes, and applying that to existing characters and settings. Went about as well as you can expect, you really can't deconstruct things that actually fit within the very work they are from. Yet deconstructing this game seems easy enough. Cycles of revenge? @@toolshedvideo Death Stranding isn't boring though. That's just how some people translate "delivery man" and "walking simulator" which I guess is what you COULD boil DS down to in the simplest terms, but it's so much more than that. Every game with a human avatar has walking and traversal. Death Stranding gamefied the basic act of walking, making traversal at all stages engaging.
      As for TLOU2, I've played it now 6 times and got the plat on my 2nd run. I don't find this game exhausting at all. The audiovisual presentation is unparalleled, and I'm a PC gamer. The gameplay, while not perfect, is fantastic and fluid. At one point I realized that I had a stark feeling about almost every character and was constantly analyzing their motives and decisions. This tells me just how invested I was and was the main reason I couldn’t get enough. I honestly loved this game and would recommend it to anyone no problem.

    Regardless of whether or not you liked the order of the plot, it was put in that order for very specific reasons. Personally, it was extremely effective and I’d like to share why. Hopefully this can provide some reasoning for those of you that did not feel the same way.
    MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD
    Joel’s sudden death is meant to evoke anger and surprise from the player, setting them in line with Ellie’s motivations on her quest for revenge. Playing as her for all three days after that keeps that same mental perspective for the player.
    Yes, it’s a bit jarring to play as Abby back at day 1 (I was pissed at the time and told myself I wouldn’t agree with her), but after a while I really began to understand, empathize, and enjoy that cast. It was a really powerful feeling knowing what I had already done to them as Ellie, and ESPECIALLY because I was completely mentally on board with Ellie as I committed those crimes. Having the player sympathize with Abby’s crew earlier would have shattered that close relationship between the player’s and Ellie’s motivations.
    The growing sense of dread that I felt when playing as Abby, knowing what she would inevitably find after pouring her heart and soul into trying to save Yara and Lev was just heartbreaking, and not only knowing that I had already committed those crimes, but knowing that I had been mentally on board with it was far and away the most powerful thing in the game for me.

    I respect ACG’s reviews a lot. You can tell he’s very passionate about gaming but having played and finishing the game. For me personally it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. Never as a game got me feeling this many emotion’s from fear to down right feeling uncomfortable. I understand the cons with the length of the game and the “padding” but the so called padding parts of the game was necessary to find and collect resources and explore the many derelict buildings plus many interesting character interactions. Which I never felt like a chore. The games combat and mobility it’s greatly improved on the original which for me felt stiff and limited. Yes the length could of been shorter yes the story could of gone in a different direction. But the flashbacks for me only got me caring about the characters more gave me a back story to them. I personally loved the space shuttle scene. The set pieces are amazing. The graphics the music score both amazing. Voice acting and the emotion in the characters faces is some of the best of seen if not the best. I could go on and on. But I feel people are not appreciating how great this game is because the way Joel died or the story direction in which you play as Abby. But to say this is a wait for sale as much as I respect ACG’s opinion i have to utterly disagree. Is the game perfect? No but for me it’s a beautifully crafted masterpiece in which will take a long time to beat.

      I just got the platinum on Days Gone. I finally decided to buy it, considering the mess that TLOU2 appears to be and the fact they've spent a year updating and patching up Days Gone.
      It was AWESOME. Anyone who even has a passing interest, I say do it! Just know that it does not make a great first impression, there is jank in the cutscene (not gameplay - the gameplay is really tight, I might suggest using the "small" deadzone setting and dialing your sensitivities to taste).
      The world is gorgeous and detailed, the gameplay loop is fun, and the hordes are like playing Dead Rising except every zombie is Usain Bolt.

I acknowledged a lot of the things that bothered you about the game as I played it, but I never felt like they got in the way of my enjoyment. For a while I thought it dragged a little, but by the end I realized why it had to be that long. There are so many people and places mentioned throughout the story, and by the end you got to see all of it. Most games would leave that to imagination but this one left no stone unturned. Great review, great game.

      completly 120% agree with this sentiment. Felt it did drag, expecially towards the end of the second act I would say, but by the end of the game it all made sense why they did it. I do think they could have chopped a couple of houers off of the second act, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment. I think this is a must play if you are a person emotionally willing to accept the game's narritive.

      Same.. I thought godfather dragged a bit but it’s still one of my favorite movies. I also think that this game needs to be played in smaller chunks rather than long drawn out sessions as the somber tone and bleak atmosphere start to weigh on your after a while. For my first playthrough I was glued to the screen for hours on end so certain bits felts a bit drawn out. My second playthrough I played in 90 - 120 minute sessions and I found that I didn’t get fatigued like I did the first time around and it certainly helped diminish the slog. All in all, fantastic game.

    The Last of Us has always been a single player narrative. I still found the the sections they built in this game were so much larger than the first. True they only have one open worldish area akin to The Lost Legacy but the path they want you to follow is why you play their games. You are playing a narratively driven single player experience not an open world so I don’t think that should be a complaint personally 🤷🏽‍♂️
    I love that ND made such a challenging narrative and personally I think this game as much a masterpiece as the first even if emotionally the first left me happy and this one made me bawling like a baby lol. I also did not find pacing issues myself, I liked the out of order narrative and it helped flesh out the emotional depth of the characters pulling back the curtain bit by bit.
    Also the enemy AI is insanely hard if you played through survivor mode, which is the only mode I think both games should be played on and with no listening mode. Took me 33 hrs to beat this game on my first playthrough

    The first game had that same quirk w/ the friendly AI. I believe that was an intentional design choice because they felt that having an NPC break your stealth felt worse to the gameplay than a bit of immersion breaking. I think people are a little bit harsh on this tittle right now. I'll try and explain what I love.
    I loved the map section, downtown. And I wish that they added this type of exploration to later sections in the game.
    This type of unlocking the areas to explore and crossing them off the map was really cool.
    Graphics and characters were pretty much flawless.
    Atmosphere. Top draw. My fave areas were spore infected areas. The tunnels was an excellent level and the game did give you that feeling of dread on hearing a clicker. Or that you were being chased.
    The chase scenes were some of the best ive seen a real feel of thank god I escaped that lot did come over me.
    Combat. Full on and brutal.
    I felt a difference in combat. From infected to humans and even a difference in humans when encountering the scars.
    All in all the a.i was for me good at certain types of things.
    Athough easy to hide from enemies made you plan a route to take them out, chose which weapons to use and who to attack 1st. Plenty of choice in there and alot of ways to approach it.
    I'm glad this game goes on. Hell I'd of been fuming if it was short. The attention to detail throughout and the look and feel of the areas for me are worth the price alone.
    Some nice bits in the story. And nice link ups. As well as approaching the game from other groups perspectives. Really well done.
    The museum flash back for me was spectacular. Bits really did make me laugh out loud and Joel and Elle getting back together despite Joel's demise made you realise how well they nailed that relationship. The moment is the Rocket, outstanding. At times I really felt these characters emotions.
    Not often can a game draw you in as well as this. And make you care about the characters.
    The underwater city was also a spectacular area.
    The bottom level of the hospital. Heavily guarded.
    The cinema.
    The music shop.
    So many areas and so many interesting buildings each telling their own story and sometimes places you never really visit in a video game.
    It all helped make this game feel so real. And that exploration is key.
    The game felt like it rewarded you for checking that wall or that vent or even looking for another way to flank an enemy.
    There's so many things to like in this game.
    I never felt like it dragged on at all. In fact I just looked forwards to see where the story took you. And what the next area would look like and who you would encounter.
    Some wonderful cut scenes and animation. The bit playing the guitar or just the general conversations between the characters felt natural and weren't in any way boring or just filling gaps.
    I guess you can see I really liked this tittle.
    By far one of the best games I have ever played.
    Some nice improvements from the 1st whilst keeping the general stuff in there for you.
    Nice development guns could handle different situations nicely.
    Alot of player choice in there and replayability.
    I can't wait to play thru this again all in all.
    Top draw review again.
    Can't really say I disagree on anything you said.

      One of the reasons why factions was so necessary too, once you got used to the game's ai it was pretty easy. This game being entirely single player though, the difficulty isn't there. I'm doing survivor+ right now, and even though I thought I would have to sprint through sections where I got caught and be out of ammo... I really don't. You can still take 4 to 7 bullets (I play with the health bar off) and lose line of sight on enemies like a batman game, while keeping some guns fully stocked on ammo for emergencies.
      The challenge in the first game came from playing online against people, it was beautiful because unlike other games where they design it to play a certain way so it gives the game a certain feeling and then people just do what they want (battlefield games with 60% snipers and people using helicopters and jets as personal taxis)... TLOU is a survivor game where the more players scrap together "whatever works" to try and survive online, the more they try to exploit, the more immersive the game is. TLOU Factions was the game representation of the majority of online gaming, making playing online with randos feel as immersive as joining up with a sim battalion on arma because that's just how people play when left to their own devices.
      My review score of this game is truly represented by Ellie playing guitar at the end of the game. Something's missing that makes it not worth playing.

    I feel video game reviews have stopped working for me, since most reviewers focus way too much on the story these days and apparently have no expertise when it comes to gameplay mechanics.
    As a TPS with stealth and melee thrown into the mix Part 2 is definitely a new benchmark. How did RDR2 and RE2 Remake achieve such high review scores with much more basic gameplay than you'll find in Tlou2?

  • @BenyaminLorit
    @BenyaminLorit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    The ally AI thing was something that I've grown accustomed to in Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy where they literally walk past an enemy yet still somehow invisible. It happened to me less often here though but I really wish that would've been fixed totally.

    • @Bakalar
      @Bakalar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Though still not great, the companion AI has been improved leaps and bounds compared to the previous TLoU and Uncharted games. In my games, they'll actually make an effort to get out of sight of approaching enemies.
      And I could have sworn sometimes when I pushed too far with my companion, then fall back afterwards, the enemies actually spotted my companion which broke the stealth. Best part was, after all the enemies were killed, my companion actually apologized for it.

    • @Tool0430
      @Tool0430 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Don't they do this purposefully though? I know it can be a bit immersion breaking when your companion is clearly in the line of sight of an enemy but it would be more aggravating if you're sneaking around and each time your companion is spotted all hell breaks loose. AI just isn't good enough to work as its own body yet

    • @Hoopla10
      @Hoopla10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Bakalar I would agree it's a lot better than TloU1. There's a few nice touches like they stop suddenly (nicely animated) when a clicker does its loud clicks or if you're crouched and move along cover the companion will shift and hug the cover tighter in order for you to pass. There's only been a couple of times I've felt the companion really stray out into an area that broke immersion where in the first game they'd often run around like a mad person.
      A lot gets talked about next gen' graphics but honestly AI in all games are pretty crappy (let alone companion AI) it's something I'd rather devs concentrated on going forward.

    • @CluelessMarvin
      @CluelessMarvin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hoopla10 It will be interesting to see if the next generation improves on AI. I wonder what is currently holding it back. The hardware? For now unjustifiable effort in development?

    • @Hoopla10
      @Hoopla10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CluelessMarvin It's presumably a mix of both. Alien Isolation is probably the best developed AI tree(s) this gen and that only had to focus on one NPC (the Alien). If we want all NPC to behave realistically then it takes more computational power. Plus it takes energy and work to develop, which costs money. It's hard to sell a game on AI when pretty graphics do a better job. But we must be reaching a point of reduced benefit of visual fidelity when even TLOU2 (a this gen' game) looks really good. We saw in the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo where this is probably heading and it actually benefits development pipelines rather than overwhelms them. So hopefully a lot of publishers will start looking in other areas of development to showcase their new games. Because done well it'll not only influence every part of a game it could entirely revolutionize all games going forward.

      That's what I liked about it. I loved the jumping, climbing and rope physics. The first game was so dull. It was just shoot, sneak, boost me up! Shoot, sneak, boost me up! I also thought the aspects of revenge, redemption, and good vs evil had much more depth than the "go from point A to point B" plot the first one had.

    Thanks for a well thought out review, Karak. I love this game but acknowledge some flaws, which for some people really affected their immersion. We're spoilt nowadays. Its fucking epic. The amount of times my brain thought I was in an actual survival situation, then finaly getting through it with fossilised primal instincts and finding my jaw was on the floor. Yes its a bit bloated, pun intended, but playing at my own pace it was a great journey. I know its not faultless, mainly regarding the human enemy ai - but I think the cinematic encounters and brutal gameplay are easily worth the price tag. Fascinating how differently people receive it though.

      A lot of the areas were phenomenally immersive so just to imagine an open world game with exactly how it is that would be absolutely amazing. Dying Light is the only one close to something like that, but I love the emptiness and a lot more gritty how TLOU is.

    • @Hoopla10
      @Hoopla10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SugarW1thC0ffee I agree, I was constantly astonished with the amount of work that had gone into every area I passed through. The semi-open world bit I loved but how you balance that with narrative if you expand it out even further where you're no longer in full control of how the player moves around the map. I thought Horizon Zero Dawn was excellent and loved the story but it sort of fell victim of that problem where only very clear sections the story/narrative is fed to you.

      That's the rating I gave the game too. And, the ending is one of those you have to think outside the box for a second. Ellie has mentioned in the first game (and I think the Left Behind DLC) that her biggest fear is being alone. Not only that, the path of revenge usually puts you in a deeper hole (depression and guilt). Because of Ellie trying to get her revenge (and of course ultimately not killing Abby), she ends up being alone and losing the people she loved. Now, I would like to think at the end that she goes back to her family and Tommy and tell them what happened and hope the best for Ellie. But, oh well. I thought the ending was sort of well done. If some of the scenes were rearranged to where they help the story progress smoother, I'd give it a 10 for sure.
