  • What I learned from standing on one leg every day. In this video, I am going to show you how to improve single leg balance. Some benefits of single leg balance include:
    -improved hip stability
    -improved core strength
    -posture correction
    -better ankle stability.
According to American Council On Exercise “Balance not only enhances physical performance, but also contributes to improving psychological and emotional states by building self-efficacy and confidence.

I am 75 and started doing this a bit over a year ago EVERY DAY. And my balance has improved in a tiny, very tiny, amount- but my goal is 30seconds. If I do three on my left and five seconds on my right I am gratified. But I shall not quit!

I could have done without seeing this. I was expecting much faster progress. I'm 84. By the way, you might try balancing on alternate legs on a firm cushion. Maybe standing on one leg is too discouraging for a beginner. (Sat Jul 30, 2022)

I used to stand on one leg half an hour in the subway on my way to high school, and back home I stood on the other leg and just had a pole close to me in case I loose balance when the subway turn or breaks. After a semester even if I was among the slimmest lightweight guys in my tae kwon do club no one could push me down when we had one leg competitions of wrestling and pushing and pulling each other down from one leg in the whole group of 20-30 students, I won every time and the big 85 kilo instructors could never get how this little 67 kilo teen could keep winning and being the last man standing in the room week after week…
So, ya to practice standing on one leg does work!

I’ve been doing this for many years….I started doing it after I caught a virus which amongst other things badly affected my balance. Standing on one leg was something I started doing as part of my recovery…..but as mentioned here, I also found that it had many other benefits so I continued even after I was fully recovered. I’m now even able to do it with my eyes closed.

Great stuff, Ms. Simon. Simple and clear. Many tai chi players do this as forms of Zhan Zhuang standing meditation. Besides the many points you cover, tai chi teachers emphasize that it helps practitioners distinguish the 'yin' and 'yang' states so central to tai chi movement. They can be smooth and continuous with each step or weight shift. Real balance is attained by letting go, rather than holding on. That becomes clearer when standing on one leg, especially as the supporting leg muscles get tired. If one can stay balanced and centered, while letting go a bit, it feels like one is being inflated or held up. It contributes to building a "whole body power" quite different than simply muscular strength. Following one's breath going in and out in a relaxed (LSD: light slow & deep) way helps a lot.

And as a next step I really recommend standing on one foot with closed eyes. Totally new world for your body knowledge

I have done this for years. I know more people will try doing this. We I have encouraged people to do this they try and say I can not do that . They give up right away

I've just started doing this, I've done yoga for a while but never focused on balance too much... I've realised that if I can not shake my whole body feels relaxed (or i should say the correct muscles are engaged), breathing becomes easier....this isn't swaying and falling which is prefectly fine, I'm talking about shaking try and tell yourself I'm not going to shake its a nervous system response there's definitely something to it.

RIGHT, Yet, as aformer military person, let me introduce a similar training having been practiced for centuries: MARCHING. If added by your system, i.e. raising knees interrupted for say 10-30 seconds, couold make so many recruit , if not happier, than healthier. Paul, 67, retired instructor.

The mechanics of being able to stand on one leg is determined by the three arches in your feet, especially the lateral arch due to its anatomical position. The improvement of the corporal equilibrium comes to having strong leg, leg anatomically being below the patella, muscles and organized correctly and furthermore it corrects flat feet overtime. Think of a bridge and what holds it together, tension and compression. The rest of the benefits are cherries added to the cake.

Three arches in the foot? Obviously I can figure out where everyone is… This explanation sounds very very interesting but way over my head anybody can explain to me?

You also can mix standing on one leg with other activities like brushing your teeth, washing dishes, eating, etc. I highly suggest walking on a rail, if its available in your vicinity. 5-10 minutes a day is good practice. When you become advanced walker - walk backward or with your eyes closed, eyes-closed and backward. :-)

This could be a good video for golfers like me, so here I go on the single leg balancing, great video thanks.
ps Try standing on one leg with your eyes shut , super difficult.
