Fun fact: Originally, Lucas planned for the Emperor to be a weak figurehead puppeted by his advisors. Can I just say how grateful I am he changed his mind and gave us this awesome villain instead?
Yea and the black cloak isn't what most people think of when they think of an emperor. Most think of either militaristic uniforms like of German Empire emperors, battle armor or Roman togas of the Roman emperors, or the glamorous robes of Chinese and Japanese emperors. Imagine if Palpatine wore a uniform similar to Grand Moff Tarkin, Palpatine wouldn't be as iconic as a villain I don't think. Palpatine just looks so out of place as a position as emperor that it just works in an unexpected way. With the Force lightning even more so, nobody expected that for their first time watching that at the theater.
@@GothRailfanNope. He is symbolic of a dark wizard which is necessary to keep the fantasy element of Star Wars. Luke is a white knight saving a princess against a dark knight (darth vader) who is manipulated by a dark wizard using mind control spells (psionic powers known as the force). Assisting Luke is a white mage (yoda) and old monk (obiwan who trained vader) who use white magic to bring light to the galaxy to counter the dark. Light wakes Darth from ignorance to fight mind control to fufil a prophecy of the chosen one who defeats the dark wizard. The costume choices are intentional because its a fantasy world. Han Solo the smuggler looks like a cowboy to act as our gateway into the mystical world of star wars because like us he lives in modern time and doesn't believe in magick, preferring to trust his sidearm like modern day people. The magick of the wizard is clearly more powerful than machines and battle droids which are the local peasant workers with low status and low IQ. Star Wars is also a religious movie since the khights adhere to moral codes to never betray the light side guidance or else they become corrupted and fail to keep themselve pure. In martial arts if a warrior betrays the purpose for fighting it makes him rogue and no longer serving the purpose of helping people and defending peace. Like a corrupt cop who no longer has the right to wear the badge. The moral code is what defines knight and so without approval from the light side, you lose your right to be hero now. (just like in religions the high priest needed to be clean to enter the temple where God is to commune with him) It is the moral code that distinguishes light from the dark and if you are seduced by the dark, you lose the spiritual battle and become an agent of the dark. (which symbolises the sinful side of man) Knights would not be virtuous heroes if they did what they want rather than what the light side of the force wants. There is a spiritual connection between the light side and the knights who must do the will of the force. (which is the god of star wars basically - light are good guys and the dark are the bad guys. When light overcomes dark is the balance. Many fans falsely believe light and dark in equal amounts means the force is balanced. (they got the idea from the Yin and Yang symbol) No dark is evil, light is good and good overcoming evil means peace in the galaxy thus balance and people living in harmony together. Like when nature is going according to its order rather than being perverted and used and weaponised to control people. Waterfalls are peaceful because nature created them. But what if you used the nature to make terrible weapons like took wood and stones to make clubs to kill people? That's imbalance since you took nature and perverted it to your selfish will to control and enslave people with it ie the dark side bringing imbalance and disharmony. )
Ewan McGregor, Ian Diarmid and Liam Neeson were all pretty good. I might get slaughtered for saying this, but I believe Hayden Christensen wasn't that bad either.... Just Lucas' fault for making him that whinny character he is potrayed as.
Interesting how Lucas recruited Ian McDiarmid to play the Emperor way back in 1983 (Return of the Jedi). McDiarmid was playing an 88 year old man when he was 39 years old, then a 52 year old version of the character when he was 55 (and finally 65 when he was 61, playing an older character again).
MiyaSamaCo So true! Vader gets all the credit for being the big bad of Star Wars bits it’s the Emperor and he’s awesome and a great villain. Doesn’t get enough credit.
I have to admit the sith are onto something when they say "your anger gives you focus, makes you stronger" it is very true and is a useful fighting technique if used properly haha
Dennis Williams Vader was also dealing with the rather world-shattering realization that he not only had a daughter but had personally tortured her as well. Sure, he had enormous self-control (probably why he was able to fight as all) but you have to admit that he was probably "slightly" distracted by that realization.
My favorite part is when he gets sarcastic and says "I'm afraid the shield generator will be quite operational when your friends arrive..."...smiles....
@@nickniehaus1763 No they are not. Are you even a star wars fan? Vader was pretty much a new person and he himself was referring to his old self as "Anakin Skywalker". Anakin came back in the end and brought balance to the force.
I like how Anakin didn't even question the fact that Palpatine had obviously been lying about having the power to save Padme. After the Mace Windu/Unlimited Powaaaaa scene, Anakin's all like "Teach me your ways... I'll do anything to save her" And Palpatine's like "Uhhh, well... actually, I don't have that power... but but if we work together, we will figure it out!"
+ElderSnake90 He realized that but he also knew that he would likely be expelled from the Jedi order for his role in Windu's death. He felt he had no other choice.
ElderSnake90 he figured at least he's my real friend and will help me. The jedi don't trust me or care about me and will expel me if they learn I'm married.
@@TheGoodLuc Probably a pun for "INvader" (since Anakin helps destroy the Jedi from within). Just as Sidious is a pun for "INsidious", and "Tyranus" is a pun for "Tyrant".
Darth Sidious searching his pockets, when suddenly he finds a credit he thought he had lost somewhere on the street: -GOOOOOOOOOD GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
It's ironic that patience is a cornerstone of a Jedi's belief. Yet it was arguably the most powerful Sith Lord ever, that showed the ultimate level of patience beyond anything a Jedi achieved 👌
"So be it.....Jedi." The delivery, especially from Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor, makes the whole dialogue between himself, Vader and Luke one of the greatest things I've ever witnessed. I just absolutely LOVE everything in the Star Wars films to lead up to these final moments with the ultimate power in the galaxy finally meeting his match, in a father's love for his son being the ultimate victor........
If Star Wars was a tragedy in the Ancient Greek style of Athenian tragedy, there wouldn't have been a redemption arc for Vader. But that's not to say that Luke and Anakin wouldn't have that father-son attachment. The love and attachment between father and son is all over in Greek literature. Palpatine would've killed Luke, and then probably Vader afterwards, or have Luke kill Vader, and/or all three of them would die.
I'm really happy that they realised this characters arc and place in the franchise was finished and never brought him back in some ridiculous, ambiguous way.......
"everything that has transpired has done so according to my design" what makes that quote legendary is that it was said even before the clone wars was made (i know it was mentioned in ANH but i mean before the prequel trilogy was made). it works perfectly seeing as palpatine really was the mastermind behind everything, dating back to the prequel trilogy. sidious is a muthafucking genius
@Captain Barbossa Nope. It's stated many times his injuries keep him from tapping into his full potential. Otherwise you're right, anakin would've become a god.
@Captain Barbossa Compare how easily Palpatine overpowered Luke who is on par with Vader. Vader had more potential but he got weaker do to his robotic body that is obvious. He could only kill Sidious by suicide
"Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design." That right there is my favorite line from Palpatine. It just goes to cement the fact that he is the ultimate evil in the Star Wars universe. He literally made sure that everything that happened in the Empire was under his control. He's not scared of defeat by the Rebels simply because he *knows* that there's no way short of a miracle that they can win. Had it not been for outside help (in the form of teddy bears, but still...), there's no way the Rebels could have prevailed. The Emperor was simply too powerful.
***** Were it not for outside help, the Rebels would have lost. The only reason they found the shield generator for the Death Star was because the Emperor basically told them where it was. He hoped to get them and all of their leaders in the same place so he could wipe them out in one shot, and he did.
***** Honestly, I'd be a Rebel, mainly because I'm not a fan of dictatorships. I don't like bullies who think they can impose their will on others. Also, Stormtroopers apparently aren't trained to shoot for shit.
Palpatine was overconfident. He seemed to know how to create his empire, but not keep it. The He supposedly was using a battle meditation that was making the imperial fleet win against the Rebels. After his death it assured the rebel's victory. Palpy also didn't oddly forsee Vader's care for his own son, thus he got thrown into a pit
THE greatest villain to ever exist. He literally represents the darkest version of the devil that exists on screen. Ian is one of the best actors of our time
Man, he is so goofy, yet so iconic and threatening. Really, he is one of the fa greatest movie villains of all time. While a lot of his dialogue is pretty corny, his delivery makes it so great. I especially like how after he reveal himself in episode III, he just go all out with his mimic and crazy attitude; he's been suppressing that side of himself for a long time, so of course he will go to extreme extends when he comes out. Oh, that last part could be interpreted very differently, but I can't really find another way to describe it.
Emperor Palpatine is such a well-acted and written, compelling character. When I was younger, that scene beginning around 7:00 minutes into this video used to scare me. Palpatine is creepy to begin with, but something about seeing a dark robed, disfigured shadowy figure that is the most powerful man in the universe walking slowly towards Luke (and me, the viewer, from a nearly first-person perspective), while mockingly intimidating the hero, was a very frightful experience the first time. The various laughs he does are also great. I still regard the Emperor as one of the very top characters in the series, perhaps ranked above Darth Vader in intimidating and interesting qualities, or perhaps above all others. I even completed the main quest in Skyrim as Palpatine, in a strange scenario in which he found himself within another world, all for the taking.
YoungSocialist True and false. While as a Sith he truly cared only for himself, at the same time he did believe that his imposed "order through fear" was best for the galaxy at large, and that he was restoring balance to the Force by giving the dark side chance to reign after thousands of years of light side incompetence.
I feel like Sidious' character is a lot better in the original trilogy; he seems a lot darker and more sinister, and his lines were written better. Of course this has nothing to do with the actor who is phenomenal in both trilogies.
You could look at it this way the emperor just got more sinister and darker as he got older. Personally I like ians portrayals in both trilogies. Yeah Ian and ewan were the true mvps of the prequels.
I hate how they made him so dumb in The Rise of Skywalker. Nothing like Darth Sidious at all man. Breaks my heart. His lines in the movie are so bad, do not match the level of villain he was before

Fun fact: Originally, Lucas planned for the Emperor to be a weak figurehead puppeted by his advisors. Can I just say how grateful I am he changed his mind and gave us this awesome villain instead?
Lucas was also outplanned by Palpatine.
(just like in religions the high priest needed to be clean to enter the temple where God is to commune with him)
It is the moral code that distinguishes light from the dark and if you are seduced by the dark, you lose the spiritual battle and become an agent of the dark.
That's imbalance since you took nature and perverted it to your selfish will to control and enslave people with it ie the dark side bringing imbalance and disharmony. )
Did you just call vadar ignorant
Vadar was cool
Darth Sidious was the most powerful Sith Lord to exist. Ian deserved an Oscar for his portrayal and I was glad they kept him through the prequels.
Prequels had less than stellar acting (being kind) but the guy that plays Palpatine/Sidious was on point IMO. Ewan McGregor also good.
"I don't want to hear anymore about obi-wan."
+Bobby Flay I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere
Ewan McGregor, Ian Diarmid and Liam Neeson were all pretty good. I might get slaughtered for saying this, but I believe Hayden Christensen wasn't that bad either.... Just Lucas' fault for making him that whinny character he is potrayed as.
+Dan .B Hayden, when he didn't have dialogue and relied on visual acting was actually compelling..
+Dan .B Agreed except for Ian McKellen. I don't remember him playing the emperor, I'm sure he's good, but I liked Ian McDiarmid better.

I hate that when they talk about "the best movie villains", they never even mention Emperor Palpatine - who is no doubt the best!
MiyaSamaCo So true! Vader gets all the credit for being the big bad of Star Wars bits it’s the Emperor and he’s awesome and a great villain. Doesn’t get enough credit.
MiyaSamaCo I wouldn’t call him a Villain. That’s why
Sidious > Vader
Well vaders not really a villain he's kinda a tragic misunderstood hero, the real villain of starwars has always been palpatine.
Hes way better than the over rated darth vader
I have to admit the sith are onto something when they say "your anger gives you focus, makes you stronger" it is very true and is a useful fighting technique if used properly haha
Indeed.
"if used properly"
That is the key thing that people have been messing up for millennia. Blind rage against a focused opponent is a major liability.
I mean Luke used blind rage against Vader and it worked.
Dennis Williams Vader held back.
Dennis Williams Vader was also dealing with the rather world-shattering realization that he not only had a daughter but had personally tortured her as well. Sure, he had enormous self-control (probably why he was able to fight as all) but you have to admit that he was probably "slightly" distracted by that realization.
As a kid, i thought Sidious and Palpantine are 2 different people. So i guess he did his job right !

"Wipe them out......all of them"

It will be done my lord
"Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design."
That right there is my favorite line from Palpatine. The Emperor was simply too powerful.
alice dela cuesta ... Ooookaaayyy... Not sure what I did to deserve that, but ok...
"I know you would," as Anakin holds his sabre to Sidious' back. That's got to be my favorite. Don't know why. It just is.

8:04 when he switch his voice is priceless. 😆 🤣 😂
The Emperor was such a smug twat.
what i love about palpitine is he truly believes what he is doing is for the good of the galaxy

YoungSocialist True and false. While as a Sith he truly cared only for himself, at the same time he did believe that his imposed "order through fear" was best for the galaxy at large, and that he was restoring balance to the Force by giving the dark side chance to reign after thousands of years of light side incompetence.

I like the heavily manipulative nature he had in the prequels.
Yeah, I really enjoyed that plot. If the prequels had been directed better I feel like they would have been really good.
