I love how he's able to be over-the-top without acting badly. Sort of like Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Ryan Reynold's Deadpool, Claude Rains' Invisible Man or Heath Ledger's Joker.
He became more brazen and arrogant as his plan came closer to fruition. And once it was realized all he had to do then was bask in his own glorious victory.
Revenge of the Sith was the best day of his life. He finally got the power he's been building towards for so long and he finally got to go mask off and blast lightning and use a lightsaber. He literally revels in the violence he commits in that movie, he rarely gets to personally do that (with his last time probably being the Savage and Maul duel).
@@MariOmor1 I love his creepy clone zombie thing he had going on at first, I like how he’s presented in a different way in all the trilogies yet it still feels like the same character
I never realized how little screen time he's had until now. Yet he's still one of the greatest villains of all time. I guess there are benefits of not over exposing your villain too much. Adds a veil of mystery to them.

One of the worst decisions made was decanonizing the Darth Plagueis novel. Reading how Palpatine was a vile, muderous, power hungry, sadistic, criminal mastermind even as a child makes him all the more bone chilling. Seeing how he murdered his parents, joined the Sith Order, manipulated his way to becoming a senator then Chancellor of the Republic. The fact that he was evil from the start, no tragic backstory, no manipulation and turn to the dark side by a dark lord like Vader, Sauron, etc. He's truly the SW version of the Devil. Makes Voldemort look tame.
he even killed his own master and took his place Lol 🤣 he is unapologetically evil, people over here complaining about sympathetic villains, and praising little jack horner by dream works, and completely ignoring the Original Palpatine LMAO 🤣👌
At this point, there's enough allusions to the ancient Sith, Plagueis himself, the role he played in orchestrating Palpatine's rise, and what he taught his apprentice (especially powers over life and death - Lucas himself didn't want that, but both canon and legends decided to do it anyways) that the novel is basically canonized. Officially, Plagueis even still died around the same time as he did in Legends: sometime around TPM, after Maul had been taken and trained.

One thing that fascinates me is how the Clone Wars makes Palpatine and Anakin's close friendship seem so...realistic and understandable. Like, I can finally understand why Anakin was so manipulated and why he didn't suspect anything.
If you needed that lore destroyer junk TCW, then you aren't very bright. Anakin didn't have one reason to be loyal to jedi. And yes jedi were plotting to take over in movie, they forced Anakin to spy on Palpatine, and when they should follow jedi rules, Mace windu war ready to broke them which showed Anakin sith and jedi are no different. In movies was also obvious that Palpatine guided Anakin in ep2 as Anakin confirms "your guidance more than my patience" TCW is trash for kids and it isn't part of movie canon nor it will ever be. I would rather saw sequels every day than 5 minutes of TCW junk and i hate sequels

I feel like Palpatine even if he wasn't a sith, he would still be the best villain of all Star Wars. The way he manipulated the entire galaxy to his will by orchestrating a war is incredible and also scarily realistic if we compared him to contemporary world leaders.

1:13:53 Is where we see how evil Palpatine truly is. He's completely gleeful while Vader is in absolute anguish and despair. It's a beautifully done scene.
Fun fact: It was originally suppose to be Sideous himself how ordered the clone army under the alias “Sido Dias”. But Lucas made a typo in the script, and he liked the name Sifo Dias so much he decided to make him into his own character.

As a Sith Lord, he represented the threat most in the galaxy long considered a “myth”. He played off of this myth, using it to keep people afraid and on edge, concealing his true identity from the Republic and the Jedi, hiding in plain sight. For decades he was right under the Jedi’s noses, and they didn’t learn the truth until it was too late. He led the Republic, and the Confederacy, essentially fighting a war against himself, all as a pretense to weaken democracy and the Jedi. And once firmly ensconced as Emperor, he transformed the galaxy on an unbelievable scale in two short decades. Even after his first death, his legacy loomed large over the galaxy, and mere news of his return years after Endor very nearly destabilized the entire galaxy. Darth Sidious is far and above the deadliest mastermind in all of Star Wars. No other villain manipulated events on the scale he did, or played so many elaborate schemes aimed at so many myriad objectives at once, often times maintaining multiple schemes with the same focus, several of those often being intended as contingencies. While most would play chess with pieces on a board, Sidious played chess with planetary systems, armies, and untold billions of lives. All I can say is long live the Galactic Emperor!
Facts idk how he did it I probably would of slipped up and make it obvious because of the fact he led two armies to fight and he had to tell lies and make everything organized so he wouldn’t lead suspicion on himself
@@JournaloftheWhills as much I love darth sidious/sheev palpatine his appearance in the sequel trilogy was a complete waste and made no sense to the plot at all
I believe the senator bane killed was related to one of the individuals who ordered an assassination contract on palpatine and plagueis, so papa palps definitely went easy on him for that reason if that's true.
This is a great line at 21:13 He calmly plays off the fact that he has an emergency escape route, making the implication that he did not want one or had anything to do with it, when in all likelihood he commissioned it personally.
I'm so happy that George Lucas picked the right actor for this role as Palpatine / Darth Sidious. Ian was born entirely a Palpatine and plays with him masterfully without limits. Thanks george. I cannot introduce any other actor than Ian.
This man was playing both sides the whole time, switching his personality on a dime, every move extremely calculated. He pitted an army of expendable droids against the clones, a proxy war to distract everyone from his decades long plot to take full control. His plan was to play 4-D chess with himself, legend.
There was a Clone Wars comic where it showed him learning that Maul is still alive. The artist did a fantastic job drawing his reaction (perfect blend of “WTF” and “Oh Sh*t””). Wish they had recreated the moment on the show itself before the scene where he tells the Jedi to not focus on Maul

Finally. The proper cut of the saga I’ve been waiting for. Be it the prequels or sequels, there was never a moment where that man was onscreen that didn’t make me happy.
I have plenty of problems with RoS but Ian’s performance certainly wasn’t one of them, the moment where he shoots enough lightning to take down a whole fleet felt very Force Unleashed to me
The Zillo Beast arc rocks, bceause it's one of the few times in the entire story Palpatine was legitimately surprised and had no plan to deal with it. That nervous look he gives it when his impromptu attempt to exploit it fails and it comes for revenge (at around 21:00) is genuine.
@@aidan0275 animals can sense evil 80% of the time. Also he was just a sick in front of him. Sidious is egotistical and didn’t think it was dumb to say kill “it” to “it’s” face and it was too dumb to understand.
He wasn't just unprepared, he was helpless. There was practically nothing he could do, because not only did he lack a plan, he couldn't use his abilities with the force, else he would risk blowing his cover.
The guy literally hid in plain sight in a position of power, it would’ve been absurd to suspect him just as suspecting the president to be a serial killer
0:47 In the end, underestimating Padmè was Palpatine’s worst mistake. Without her, Anakin would have been lost to the Dark Side forever, and the Sith would have won. Her moral strength and her compassion, living on through both Anakin and the twins, are what ultimately defeated the Emperor.
Tbh Emperor Palpatine might be the best and most evil cinematic villain of a time! He’s got everything you look for High IQ Manipulation Iconic lines and acting A Brilliant and successful plan (for 23 years) A genuine threat Raw unmatchable power An amazing over-the-top performance by an amazing actor And loyal and equally as iconic followers Long live Emperor Palpatine!
Palpatine makes me appreciate the political overhaul in Phantom Menace. He was the phantom all along, never Maul. Understanding that makes the whole film hit different.
I can’t believe when I was little, I didn’t put two and two together that Palpatine and Sidious were actually the same guy. I picked up on the voice, but I thought Sidious was an evil twin. 😂
38:55 is probably my favourite scene. It followed the exact moment Darth Maul killed Satine, and in a way it foreshadows the terrible fate that Maul cast upon himself by angering Sidious. It's interesting because the emperor's theme is playing over Palaptine while he's still in his bubbly chancellor form, but the window is still casting a shadow over his eyes to hint his true nature
I am super suprised that Palpatine maintained a nice personality to hide his true identity from the Jedi for a long time, he even risks himself getting killed by his own minions to further prove his Innocence, speaking of minions, his identity was so well disguised that his minions don’t know that they are capturing/hurting their own leader
6:46 - 7:06 “You don’t need guidance Anakin. In time you will learn to trust your feelings, then you will be invincible” 7:28 - 7:36 “What if I told you that the republic was under control by the dark lord of the Sith?” 29:16 - 29:46 “Isn’t it remarkable, that one can have all the power in the Galaxy, and yet the words of a single senator can sway the thoughts of MILLIONS?!” 33:01 - 33:32 “You cannot deny your feelings Anakin, they are what make you special.” 47:00 - 47:11 “We must direct our attention back to the war at hand. Each day we grow closer and closer to VICTORY.” Darth Sidious was always the villain that planned ahead of everyone, manipulated everyone, his friends close and his enemies closer (which was everyone),and planting seeds of darkness in Anakin.
One thing I noticed which I’ve never noticed before, when Ian is playing the chancellor he changes his accent to an English one and when playing sidious he goes back to his Edinburgh Scottish accent
I mean, he did return in Legends through essence transfer. His portrayl is pretty accurate tho, it does change a few things. Say what you will about the sequels, but bringing Palpatine back what the one thing that saved them.
@@rafmonkey96 Saved them? Nope, that just made their burning of the OT complete. Anakin's sacrifice did nothing, Luke and the Rebellion somehow got worse after the Empire fell, and even the 2nd deathstar was ok.
I just realized whenever I’m watching Chancellor Palpatine talking to people and acting like a normal person, I’m watching an actor act out a character who is acting. Like I always knew this but it just hit me.
Leader of the Republic: Chancellor Palpatine Leader of the CIS: Darth Sidious Leader of the Empire: Emperor Palpatine Leader of the Rebel Alliance: Mon Mothma
It’s only second to the ahsoka vs Vader fight for me. That was so emotionally charged. Third would be a tie between ahsoka vs maul, maul vs Pre Vizla, and Obi Wan Vs Vader (ROTS)
@@mahirrughani2485 I don't know. I think Ahsoka vs Vader is floating on nostalgia mostly, for the Clone Wars aging audience, but the duel itself -- the technique, the intensity of the fight -- these are a lot less impressive than those of Sidious vs Maul and Savage. Ahsoka vs Maul and Obi-Wan vs Vader (ROST) are good ones, but Maul vs Pre Visla seems kinda weak for me.
Sometimes I just forget how brilliant Sidious is. Every move benefits him while he comes off as the warm trusting friend. Orchestrating a war where he is the leader of both sides is just insane. A Sith lord sitting with the entire jedi council and calling them friends is the cherry on top. Sidious could not be more evil though.
"With this power, I will create a Grand Army of the Republic" *Like 2 Days Later* "Oh wow, here was one that was just Sitting around all this time, now aint that Impeccable timing"
I love thinking about his plans and trying to perceive his intentions at every point. He truly is Satan incarnate and you can see the vailed evil in every scene. Each plan or event he orchestrates is helping him achieve multiple ends, and his ability to adapt and still win in the end is unreal. It’s so much fun to watch him on screen and try and work out what’s really going on.
30:30 “I myself don’t support it” I love the foreshadowing here for the eventual replacement of clones to conscripted soldiers for the empire. Palpatine never saw the clone army as a long term fighting force rather just as a tool to destroy the Jedi with.
At 1:35 is by far the greatest assemblage of villains in film history! In one shot, is SIX of the greatest villains of all time, w/in arm's length of each other! Incredible! From left to right: General Zod, The Emperor/Palpatine, Ras Al Ghul, young Darth Vader, Jar Jar Binks, and Jackie Kennedy! Wow! Next to Binks, I don't know which is the most evil of them all!
Jar jar was a Sith Lord. He made waving movements to influence people while he mouthed their words. I think Jar Jar is one of The Sith Lords maybe even Plaguis himself...or possibly someone else.
In my opinion there are so many astonishingly well written monologues for Palpatine, monologues full of intelligence and irony, such as S4 Ep16 when Palpatine tells Anakin after Hardeen "killed" Obi-Wan "You cannot deny your feelings Anakin; they are what make you special"; S4 Ep18 (21:05) where Palpatine tells Anakin and Obi-Wan (disguised) "One shudders to think where the galaxy would be without the Jedi"; S6 Ep4 where after the whole inhibitor chip malfunction arc, Palpatine tells jedi master Windu and grandmaster Yoda "We can finally put this wretched situation behind us. We must direct our attention back to the war at hand. Each day we grow closer and closer to victory"; S6 Ep7 when Palpatine tells the senate after the whole Clovis & Banking Clan arc "During these treacherous times, we cannot in good conscience allow our money to fall under the manipulations of a madman, like Count Dooku or separatist control again" .But there is one scene that might slightly top all of these but it is in the same theme. S5 Ep20 (14:05) It is during Ahsoka's trial, when Palpatine says "I'm sure many of you look at this former jedi and think, surely she cannot be this murderer, or saboteur that they speak of, and yet (this is the best part) *think of all the times we have been fooled by the separatists and how they have infiltrated the republic* and ask yourself is this yet another separatist scheme? Another way to rip the jedi, and subsequently all of us, apart?" That is absolutely magnificent writing for Palpatine and I am so glad that these moments exist. They make even myself interested in politics.
Ian is such a quality actor, you can see from his performance in Ep 1 that Palpatine is very believable, affable and charming as a regular up-and-coming politician - then as the PT goes on and the years pass he gradually becomes more and more consumed by the Dark Side and finds it harder to separate the behaviours, conversations and tells within his Chancellor role from his Darth Sidious persona. A Jedi Knight has to work to carefully master the Light Side of the Force, whereas a Sith Lord gives themselves to the Dark Side. Brilliant
1:08:07 “To cheat death is a power only one has achieved” So you’re telling me that Darth Sidious had already started working on his contingency plans before the Empire was even created? Jesus, how prepared is this guy?
George Lucas is clearly a student of history. Palpatine seems to be a well put together combination of Hitler, Stalin, Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Caligula and Diocletian. George also seems to have mirrored historical events when writing about Palpatines plans, for example, Order 66 is an obvious copy of the Night of the Long Knives. This is very effective, as it makes the events in an otherwise unrealistic fantasy land seem very plausible. The fans who criticised the prequels obviously knew Fuck all about the world around them to not see that
Well yeah the fall of the Galactic Republic is meant to mirror the fall of the Roman Republic, Weimer Germany, Etc. George has said stuff like this multiple times. The whole idea with Sidious's plot is it's a story about a man can use fear to convince a generally free society to give all of that up and give one person ultimate power and authority in the name of "security".
He controls everything. Which is very hard to find .only characters are ras al ghul from Gotham,Thanos from mcu,the illusive man from mass effect.can't think of any others. If anybody can think of anybody else let me know
The old republic was basically weimar germany, eternal instability and no army and active insurgencies everywhere the second they put the wrong guy in power he managed to dismantle the entire thing and go on a rampage
Agreed, Palpatine is a terrifying example of all those listed dictators combined. No other fictional ultimate evil comes close to the level of control and manipulation - not micromanaging decisions, but stacking a power structure with individuals that shared a limited narrow scope of his vision. He controlled the war by measuring the inclination and limits of those around him.
Let's take a moment to appreciate Palpatine's most genious part of the plan: Becoming BFFs with Anakin in order to turn him against the Jedi. He really acts like he cares, unlike every Jedi that's not Obi-Wan and Ahsoka
Obi Wan and Padme were pretty abusive/grooming to Anakin though. Ahsoka and Anakin were too much jerks and she gave him the cold shoulder. Really Palpatine was the only one who ever behaved respectfully with Anakin (+ his mom I guess).🫤
Palpatine is DEMONICALLY clever when it came to him NOT APPEARING to be SO powerful even in situations when he NEEDED to defend himself but chose to just ride it out.
6:25 At that moment you realize that Sidious and Palpatine are the same person, that smile is the same one from Episode 6. In Episode 1 it goes unnoticed but in Episode 2 I realized his identity thanks to this scene.
so fasinating to see how Ian adapts his way to speak. his voice and pronounciation get more cracked and evil over time and more and more fit his portrayal in the old trilogy. Thank you for the hard work!
I still say Darth Sidious was more powerful in episode 3. Most of his minions failed him more times then Vader. He hates all Jedi. Two of his former Apprentices used to be Jedi. Doing things in the shadow is what he does best.
Anyone watching this really comes to realize just how much of a satisfying climax Episode III is for every Palpy fan after waiting so long to see his grand plan come to fruition. Palpatine’s the key foundation of the whole story throughout the saga.
If you’re going into this knowing he becomes the emperor you watch all this knowing he has something planned throughout the whole prequel trilogy and you just have to sit there and watch his plan come to fruition in episode 3 it’s crazy how long he’s planned this master plan and HES GOT LIGHTING he’s too cool for the republic also dooku was older than palps when dooku died
38:40- I like the brief transition to Tim Curry- best known for his villain roles- in the midst of the Ian Abercrombie- showing his grandfatherly facade is slowly giving way to his more villainous nature and that by the time he's in full Tim Curry mode, the people are too blind to see his obvious evil traits.
I get a little bamboozled with the live action portrayals because Ian was in his 30’s when he played Palpatine in his 70’s, around 50, playing Palpatine in his late 40’s, and in his mid 60’s, playing Palpatine at 119 years old. Also puts things into perspective by just how much this evil man has reigned fire and destruction for 3 eras
I love the imagery at 5:30. There's a cloaked individual there, just a couple seats from Palpatine, giving a clear indication (perhaps unneeded but a nice touch) to his identity.
about 1:19:57 on, the genius of the scene still holds up. we see why luke starts to wane in his confidence, because this frail looking old emperor who used a walking stick up to the very last scene, just effortlessly glides over to him menacingly with the line "it is you who are mistaken". decieving both luke and the viewer (us). and from there the trap was sprung. the intoxicated, mesmerising, unblinking emperor is deception personified up until the very end. he said "i am defenceless, strike me down" but was he ever truly defenceless? no, because not only does vader defend him, but at any time sidious could shoot power from his hands, like many crackling lightsaber blades at once, to shock or kill anyone who crosses him.
He is by far the best VILLAIN of all time!! Thank you for posting this. Me and cousin quote him all the time and laugh!!! We'll speak using his lines and it's like we're speaking another language

He's such a good villain. He designed the entire conflict and played both sides and in the end, no one wins except for him. He's truly worthy of the name Sidious.
My headcanon is that Sidious had never heard of Cad Bane before the Senate hostage crisis, but was so impressed with how Bane pulled it off that he was the first person Sidious thought to hire when he needed that holocron stolen. I know canonically the holocron theft happens first, but it's a lot funnier to me the other way around.
To those who wonder who was the biggest enemy and opposition of Sidious....it was Padmé. She was the wife of Anakin, the mother of Luke and Leia, and the inspiration for the Rebellion. SHE was the cause of his fall in the end. If not for Padmé, Luke and Leia wouldn’t have ever been born, thus Luke wouldn’t have ever turned Vader back to his true self of Anakin who nelly killed Sidious and fulfilling his destiny as the Chosen One.

In movies was also obvious that Palpatine guided Anakin in ep2 as Anakin confirms "your guidance more than my patience"
TCW is trash for kids and it isn't part of movie canon nor it will ever be.
I would rather saw sequels every day than 5 minutes of TCW junk and i hate sequels

This dude had his blood enemies defending and saving his life so many times while thinning out their herd. Genius
If anybody can think of anybody else let me know
The old republic was basically weimar germany, eternal instability and no army and active insurgencies everywhere
the second they put the wrong guy in power he managed to dismantle the entire thing and go on a rampage

Heck, even Obi-Wan and Padme could be mean. Palpatine was probably the only person Anakin could turn to for a very long time.
Agreed 👍💯 it's quite simple yet powerful, anyone would be more supportive and for someone who is nice to them, than those who treat them poorly.

Palpatine is DEMONICALLY clever when it came to him NOT APPEARING to be SO powerful even in situations when he NEEDED to defend himself but chose to just ride it out.

Ian McDiarmid is by far the best part of the prequel trilogy
And Ewan McGregor
Palpatine: nice cool elderly man
Sideous: the jolliest villain ever
What a man
27:39 Palpatine: "Now lay down your arms and come quietly"
Cad Bane: "No"
Palpatine "You win, Bounty hunter"
Not to mention in the scenes prior, he was using a cane to make everyone think he was weak.
@@Hunter11725 yeah i mentioned that he was doing that in scenes leading up
He is by far the best VILLAIN of all time!! Thank you for posting this. Me and cousin quote him all the time and laugh!!! We'll speak using his lines and it's like we're speaking another language
Honestly really seeing Palpatine loving the zillo beast admiring at 18:15 its size and power he’s probably thinking if he could compare himself to any creature it would be a zillo beast
Your comment make me imagine what will Palpatine say if he meet Godzilla.. he likely will be more fascinated towards him than he did to Zillo Beast
No he was probably thinking about the armour and how the stormtroopers could use it
@@KENSHIROez3260 Ghidorah would be right up his street.
@@minicle426 interesting thing is.. if King Ghidorah exist in Star Wars universe.. his existences likely can be considered as the wound of the Force like Darth Nihilus did and the disturbance of the Force can be sensed everytime they end all life in one planet
I love how you can slowly see him turn from Senator Palpatine to Darth Sidious
The picture-in-picture bit showing the Emperor's speech as seen in different shows was pretty cool.
He's such a good villain. He designed the entire conflict and played both sides and in the end, no one wins except for him. He's truly worthy of the name Sidious.
6:14 I don’t remember Yoda giving him this look, it’s literally the look of “A sussy little Baka, you are”.
Master Yoda, I was simply in Admin, doing my tasks

Not even the most powerful sith in the galaxy can withstand Chad bane's swag

Palpatine - “Lay down your arms and come quietly”
Chad Bane - “No”
Palpatine - “You win bounty hunter”
I love the editing
My headcanon is that Sidious had never heard of Cad Bane before the Senate hostage crisis, but was so impressed with how Bane pulled it off that he was the first person Sidious thought to hire when he needed that holocron stolen. I know canonically the holocron theft happens first, but it's a lot funnier to me the other way around.
Palpatine was pure gold in TCW.
It makes me appreciate the prequels more.
My mother knew from the moment she saw Palpatine in person, he was Sidious. She paused our VHS (those were the days) and said "Thats the cloaked guy from the start."
