This fight is better than any in the sequel trilogy for one reason: it’s STORY driven.
Notice how there’s barely any actual fighting going on in all of this. Even in Empire, the real conflict wasn’t really physical, but psychological. And that’s what makes the OT so special, even despite some flaws in Return of the Jedi, like the second act & ewoks.
This segment alone stands out as one of the all time great Star Wars moments, and I love it!

you can't even compare the incredible and intense dialogue throughout this scene to any of the new ones.

Wait, the second act of Return of The Jedi? I would have thought people hated how the first quarter of the movie takes place on Tatooine, within the confines of Jabba’s palace and skiff, just trying to get Han Solo back into the squad.
If I saw this for the first time in 1983, I would have assumed that George Lucas spent a lot of time on that one part of the movie, completely forgot that there was all of Endor and Death Star II to film, and then scrambled to get Endor done quickly while also incorporating the Ewoks for the little kids watching.
Not gonna lie though, I loved Return of The Jedi, especially the final space battle.

itwontcomeout5678 I would probably say that this movie pulls a Rouge One/Endgame move in the sense that the third act makes up for almost any complaint you have had with the movie before... if that makes sense?

Vader could've backstabbed the Emperor. Luke alone, or Vader alone maybe couldn't beat the Emperor, but together they could beat him easy. If they had killed him they would both be on the dark side? Is this not what Vader wanted, to rule with his son? If he changed his mind about turning Luke then backstabbing the Emperor seems ideal, but then Vader would stay on the dark side and inevitably Luke would follow? Or was Vader so conflicted that it affected his reason? It seems, for the sake of the story, Vader had to die in order to be redeemed. Him surviving would not have done it. Say he did backstab the Emperor and then turned to the light. What then? That's not enough for redemption, also no one would ever accept Vader back in the rebellion, or new republic or whatever - the "good guys" wouldn't have him that's for sure.

I love how the movie handles Luke's short fall.
it's not the offer of power, or anything like that. Rather it's the fact that wants to protect his sister, it overwhlems him and for a moment he slips and he falls into it. And then seeing his dad's robotic hand, the same to what he has, it pulls him back.
It's the urge to protect his family that pulls him towards the dark side, and it's seeing what the dark side did to his family that pulled him out

In a contrast to the Prequels where Anakin goes through a similar journey. In the first episode, Anakin was selfless, helping a bunch of random strangers with the wise advice of his mother on Tatooine, and again on Naboo when he blew up the Droid Control Ship. Only, unfortunately, Palpatine got his eyes on him, and began the grooming and manipulation. Ten years later, in the second part, Anakin listened to the Jedi not to go back for his mother despite his warnings, being told "dreams pass in time" and other offhanded comments in the novels and comics. When he eventually went back, his mother died in his arms, and the Jedi's lack of understanding basic human emotions led him to his first taste of the Dark Side. His love for Padmé brought him back or else he would have fallen on Tatooine. Palpatine's manipulations persisted throughout the Clone Wars. Having been alienated from Obi-Wan mostly afterwards, their bond was as it could have been. The comment about Anakin saying "Obi-Wan is the closest person he has to a father" is not irrefutable proof that Anakin absolutely saw Obi-Wan as a father figure-it is obviously proof that he *wanted to* but Obi-Wan brushed him off. Anakin is the archetypal *lost boy* who attaches on (rightfully) to any older male authority figure and as sees them as a surrogate father. After AOTC and after this line Anakin never calls Obi-Wan his "father" or anything like it again. By the time of Revenge of the Sith, it is Palpatine to whom Anakin has transferred his need for a paternal figure messed up stuff. Why? Because Obi-Wan had totally refused that role and Anakin, because of various events, no longer felt he should trust him. Just a reminder of the failures of the Jedi Order. In ROTS, his manipulator encouraged him to kill a defeated threat, and he took it as a legal order and did it. He lost sleep, worrying about his wife and child(ren). Like Luke, it was not just about power. It was about wanting to protect the one he loved. Unfortunately, he couldn't pull back before it was too late. Those manipulations piled up, the alienations from his comrades, etcetera, Anakin couldn't bear the stress and all of what he could have lost, and lost it anyhow.

I typically don't get sad about celebrity deaths, but I was truly saddened to hear about the passing of James Earl Jones today. I grew up with Star Wars and always admired his deep, resonant, mellifluous voice (so much so, that I have tried to emulate that voice; the degree to which I have been successful in that regard is up for debate haha). And the facts that he overcame his childhood stutter and rose above the racism of his formative years are so inspiring to me. I am also honored to have shared my birthday with such an iconic actor. Rest in power, James. You lived a good, long life.

It was obvious he wouldnt turn, so the whole dark side aspect was kinda irrelevant. Even more with Lea. She wasnt even a Jedi, why would they try to get her to the dark side?

It made perfect sense, but why Luke??? Palpatine neither manipulated him, and neither did they have Lea or Han as a Hostage. Hell, Palpatine even showed him that the rebellion is ''lost'' and everyone would die, if anything thats MORE reason to destroy Palpatine and NOT join the dark side.
I really dont wanna say this, but this just feels like bad writing. Palpatine should have blown up endor while Luke was on it and be done with it. Luke had 0 reason to join him and was stronger than Vader, so Palpatine literally killed himself.

Don't get me wrong, Luke actually is a talented Lightsaber duelist. His lightsaber skill is actually prodigious, and in this fight, he's actually as skilled as Vader in Lightsaber combat. George Lucas even says that Luke and Vader could have an even sword fight at this point in time without Vader stomping him.
That being said, Vader also wasn't trying to beat Luke for a majority of this fight. During their duel on Bespin, Vader literally uses the Force in conjunction with his Lightsaber. If he was actually trying to kill Luke, Vader would have absolutely stomped him.
But because Vader just essentially limited this to a sword fight, Luke actually stood a chance.
Of course, I think if Luke uses the Dark Side, he's better than Vader in pure Lightsaber combat (we even see Vader get genuinely overwhelmed here), but like I said, Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke. He didn't play smart. He just antagonized Luke and made the young Jedi lose his cool.

Whenever he fights Dooku, Ventress, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Cal, Starkiller, Kanan, even Luke the first time. He's always on the offensive. Always on the attack. This is probably the first time we see him in a duel where he's on the defensive.

For those arguing Luke did indeed surpass Vader once he used Jedi Fury, fully tapping into the darkside.
The novel itself states that Palpatine himself was afraid of that power being used against him, with Sidious saying Luke could destroy them, with many other sources also sighting this.
The novel also says that Sidious confidence in that moment was an act as Luke looked within him and sensed his fear.
So Luke very briefly attained power comparable to and superior to that of Sidious but once he calms down he loses the rage boost and fatigue also sets in(as it happens after a fight is over and you calm down from rage)leaving him vulnerable, along with dropping his lightsaber like the lovable naive fool that he is.
This is impressive for Vader cause he held his own against this power and Luke still had to put a lot of effort to beat him down, this solidifies that Vader is relative to Sidious power in this film,Lucas statement of EP6 Vader being 80% of Sidious makes a lot of sense under this context.
Without using the darkside Luke was an equal overall tier with Vader but definetly weaker and on the lower end, with him somewhat gaining the advantage by using his aggressive feelings when kicking Vader down.
But normally you can tell Vader has a definitive edge

100% agree. I've said before in conversations with people about this scene that in those fleeting moments during Luke's rage, he could've beaten almost anybody, including Palpatine himself. Vader loved his family. He still had love within him. Luke called him on that when he said, I sense the conflict within you, I don't believe you can bring yourself to destroy me... Luke was right and deep down inside Vader knew it. That's one of the reasons this scene is so powerful. Darth Vader is a total bad ass. He's done very bad things. Yet facing his son in battle caused him to show a tremendous amount of restraint. Because in his heart, he's still Anakin... And Anakin ultimatley turned to the dark side to save the people he loved... I choked up when I watch this scene too. Epic cinema and storytelling for sure! I brought up the "find" utility to see if anyone else possibly noticed this small but VERY crucial "tell" as far as what Luke was internally thinking and the possible future path Luke might take as far as his current choices were about to seal the deal for him.
This very small cut of the scene is pretty much what sealed the deal for me on why my vote goes to ROTJ when saying which Star Wars I like best!!
It really highlights the fact we all have choices in life and even in the most dire of situations, no matter how difficult it seems it might be when considering the consequences of our moment to moment choices, at the very worst it's a 50/50 decision and the easy way out never pays off like choosing what is good for us in the long run!!
Thanks for being "that guy!" I was super duper hoping that someone else picked up on this very small detail given the gravity of the scene and how things turned out afterwards!

This scene hits harder when you have a son of your own. When I was a kid I thought this fight was cool. Now that I’m an adult and a father, I think it’s heartbreaking. The way Luke looks at Vader when sidious is talking to him and his eyes say “dad… please help me.”
Honestly this is one of the best stories in cinema history. George Lucas and his crew did an amazing job. It’s a shame Disney came along and fucked everything up.
Edit: also, Vader wasn’t protecting Sideous from Luke when he blocked his lightsaber. He was protecting Luke from the dark side. Vader saved his son not once, but twice in this scene. He didn’t want his child to share his fate.

The anger that Luke felt wasn't an anger of hate, it was one to protect the ones he loves. Much more powerful than Anakin's anger he felt when he wanted to gain power to help those he loved. This movie/scene brings so many emotions that you honestly don't care about the fight itself, rather the battle to save the ones you love from the Dark Side. This movie brings a great moral, it's easy to hate and destroy, but to love and fight for something, someone else is one of the greatest gifts we can give.

Before he was playing quicker and more passive, focusing on blocking Vader's attacks and avoiding him with some grace to his moves, not wanting to fight. But when Vader threatens him with Leia, he goes entirely on the offense and starts slashing everywhere, missing a lot of his attacks at first and just constantly attacking Vader, pushing him back and down. And then he just starts beating into his lightsaber like if he were hitting someone with a bat. He went from defensive and elegant avoidance to rage-induced constant striking, every hit just full of anger towards his father. Hamill is very talented in showing just how careless and angry Luke got during the fight.

Well, Vader has been in Luke’s position before. Anakin should’ve spared Dooku, because it was not the Jedi way to kill an unarmed prisoner. In the same manner, Sidious tries to rid himself of Vader’s unrealized potential. But Luke comes to his senses and tosses down his weapon, declaring himself a Jedi in the footsteps of his father.

I love how Revenge Of the Sith and Return of the Jedi is the turning point for our protagonists.
Anakin had continued to go into the dark side, following the order to kill Count Dooku, indirectly ascending the time of Count Dooku and was worried about Padmé too much to not think straight, causing him to lose her, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Rex, and all of his friends.
Luke had struggled with the dark side and was greyish at this time and was able to resist Palpatine's manipulations, becoming his own person and being the embodiment of what a Jedi should have be. Because of resisting Palpatine's grooming and manipulation, Luke hadn't lost his friends and family and had started a new Order that carried down for generations to come.

Actually this fight is the reversal of Dooku VS Anakin in episode 03: both fights take place in front of Palpatine and end with a cut hand. But while Anakin will let himself to hate and kill his opponent, Luke won't do it.

The way Luke attacks Vader at 4:37 allways give me chills.
You can see and feel his *fear* (for Leia's fate), his *anger* (for being betrayed by his feelings) and his *hate* (for Vader and the Emperor).

This scene works so great because it's horribly realistic (in spite of lightsabers, starships, Jedi and Sith, mental rape, etc., ): a just grown-up child who unleashes murderously against his abusive father, because this one is threatening for the umpteenth time the safety of one of their family women! Chronicles records such cases :(

4:20-4:26 in my mind is the single greatest camera shot I have ever seen. I don't know why but putting it all together with the music and the camera panning to this intense duel between two characters that have gone through so much...it just hits hard in my mind. I try not to tear up when watching this just from my love for star wars and how it has impacted my life. Thank you George Lucas and John Williams for bringing me this beautiful scene. 👏

He is integrated in a *cybernetic* suit that also acts as a life support system. I assume such a complex piece of technology doesn't handle being cut apart very well. Also, his integration into the suit is not without problems, and he is in constant pain from it +his injuries. He is basically a cripple and Luke just took a wheel off his wheelchair...

This is the first time you see Vader in full retreat in the entire original trilogy. Contrast that with the way he walked through the Hoth base, seemingly unstoppable.
Luke's lean body contrasts with the imposing bulk of Vader's cape. For the first part of the shot, Vader's lightsaber isn't hitting its mark. For the next part, Luke seems to have momentum, giving Vader no time to do anything but block while retreating. The shot is a simple pan left, showing the fighters side-by-side, as in a fighting game, with Vader in retreat.
