    Hi everyone, thank you so much for watching this video comparison. Please note that while I compared 3 horn sections from each library, I stuck to the smaller ensemble sizes, as each library contains those.
    I will do another video showing the larger sections of some of these libraries to demonstrate their potential. Thanks again!

    For me it's Cinematic Studio Brass. Such a versatile library and is so epic in dynamics, plus legatos are amazing as well. It's a toss up between that and Cinebrass. The thing though with cinebrass is the legatos at the highest dynamic sounds weird and hesitant, not a problem with CSB.

    Thanks Christopher. Again a very informative video with useful information. Most of us just need to rely on the 'honest blue eyes' of the manufacturers of libraries while their demo's are optimized by professionals, which is logical of course. A 'cold comparison' gives an honest impression of the basic color of the library, which is very useful. Thanks for your time and energy ;-)

    Thanks for the comparison Chris! I prefer the tone of Cinesamples Brass and CSB. The Berlin brass recordings sound dated to me, even though it's not an old library. Junkie XL Brass sounds thin and synthy to me, which I'm not a fan of. But, they all have their purposes and everyone has their own music and tastes, so it's nice to hear examples like this :-)

    Nice one Chris! Just got my hands on the solo trumpet and solo trombone from JXL Brass. I think you’ll have a lot of fun with it! From person preference do you prefer the velocity sensitive shorts or modwheel shorts from Cinebrass? In-depth and insightful. Great walkthrough! 🎺

    • @ChristopherSiu
      @ChristopherSiu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jack! It does sound nice. I personally like the concept of velocity-based shorts for volume, but I also appreciate how Cinesamples fit multiple lengths of shorts within 1 patch and used the modwheel to control their volumes. The velocity approach is more intuitive imo, but you would just need more patches or a multi patch with key switches in that case.

    They all sound good. The cinebrass is clearly a different sound from all the others, definitely more on the cartoony side in my opinion. That is a good thing though, It makes it stand out in that niche. Thanks for all the samples really helped me decide my next brass plugin.

  • @alainpatry
    @alainpatry 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Cinesamples, do you have to use the "velocity-based articulation switching" or can you turn that off? I find that this might take some getting used to as it is unique to this library....

    I currently have CSS and CineBrass and I really love both libraries on their own, but I personally have a hard time making them work together, and that's probably just cuz I'm not great at mixing. How do you combine the dark studio of CSS with the bright scoring stage of CB and make them work better together?

    Thank you! This is very helpful to me. Is Cinematic Studio still darker than Cinesamples even with the just the closest mic position? If so, do you think the difference is from the number of instruments, the room they used, post-processing by Cinesamples or something else?

    • @ChristopherSiu
      @ChristopherSiu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alec! Yes, the closeness of the mic affects the detail of the sound the most, rather than the actual tone of the instrument. I think it’s mainly the microphones, mixing, and room recorded in that affects the final sound.

      Me too, especially as it is currently on sale. I really want to see a comparison between the brass instruments sounds from Sample Modeling, SWAM Modeling and Aaron Venture, as they are all advanced modeling libraries. Also curious how much harder or easier they are to program. The SWAM stuff especially is quite expensive for non-students though.

      I'd rather just move up to Berlin or JXL brass for the price rather than Spitfire. CSB is my current go to but I want another to compliment it. The current Cinebrass and Infinite brass sales are tempting, though I'm not a fan of the Cinesamples GUI and it's age makes me a little reticent to jump in

    Hey Chris, I appreciate the comparison, though I do think viewers need to pay attention to your caveat that your preferences are related to your style of music which is the more classical Hollywood style. This is going to present CineBrass, Berlin Brass, and Cinematic Studio Brass in the best light. But you weren't able to show JunkieXL's 12 Trombone, 6 Horn, and 12 Horn sections, as well as the killer Bass Trombone and Cimbassi sections. JunkieXL has so much epic power in those sections that the other ones can't do. Yet it still holds it's own at all the lower dynamics too, which is why I think JunkieXL Brass is the best all around library.
    Not to discount your great comparison at all, you did a great job and made sure to mention that these are your preferences, I just think people listening should know about some the other large sections that didn't make it into this comparison.

    • @ChristopherSiu
      @ChristopherSiu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, yes great point. I might actually do a video solely on the larger sections that these libraries offer, and create a little midi melody to go along with them. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

    • @tickscollector9029

      On the contrary, I think he did well :-)
      He compared few parts of like for like (is this the way to say it?) from 4 libraries, that way letting ppl hear how each libs core tone/recording/scripting compares one to another.
      Personally? I would even preferred if Chris compared them per articulation, legato for legato, staccato for staccato... cause humans hearing memory if pretty iffy lol
      One more thing to consider, while showing only those few articulations and instruments, this comparison still needed a whole half hour...
      How long would it take to go deeper? cause then you can't stop just at JXL's 12 horns and trombones, you need to show also how deep Berlin is... and you know how deep it is :-)
      So Berlin don't have 12 horns, but it has expansions, and many of them, Cine also have 12 horns AND few expansions... it doesn't end.
      Still, I'll gladly watch this 8 hour video :-D

    If anyone's curious about the Spitfire brass library I would personally recommend avoiding. There is a lot of room sound baked into the samples from the air studios in which the library is recorded. In my opinion the studio works well for winds and strings but brass should be more raw. The baked in room sound makes it less malleable in the mix

    a general suggestion. Since you are not a brass player and do not play the instruments in a realistic way that a brass player would (phrasing, breath), it would be helpful to viewers to actually hear compositions written for these instruments. Play a horn concerto for solo or a well known ensemble cue (perhaps Wagner , Holst, Williams etc). Having you noodle on notes and mod wheel does nothing to show how these libraries will actually sound in context of musical phrases written for brass. This type of review helps in finding what these brass libraries sound like in a context they are not designed for. Most composers are looking at brass libraries to hear how they can sound like real brass. Here is a possible way...do an A/B comparison of a cue of [Composer] cue real vs library 1, real vs library 2 etc. Do a few cues to show legato and marcato use. This would let the viewer hear how close a brass library sounds to a real brass ensemble, and you could explain how easy or difficult it is to make that library sound like a real ensemble. Some composers say Adventure Brass can achieve a realistic cue with minimum effort, while other libraries take much more key switching and fine-tuning to get the articulation and phrasing to sound realistic. In a comparison review, you should challenge the libraries to find their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe one library is really good at legato unison, while another excels at marcato ensemble trailer cues. Maybe one has great portamento.
    Whether a library is bright or wet or dry are generalities without context. If I am writing a full orchestral cue with close voicing in the strings and want a horn or trumpet line to cut through, then a bright sound may be the best. If the cue was a quiet intimate one, that bright sound may stick out like a sore thumb. This is not to complain on what you've done, but a suggestion to dig deeper with context.

      Thanks for your thoughts Tony. Will keep in mind for future videos!

    • @ChristopherSiu
      @ChristopherSiu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Generally I consider a library’s quality from a few factors: sound, playability and articulations. Each of these libraries covers all the basics, so when it comes to sound and legato, I find comparing a few patches directly against each other shows how quickly the legato may keep up, how smooth the sound can be, how short the notes can get etc. If the goal was to truly put the libraries in context and have them perform different lines, I would definitely do as you’re saying and see how they keep up. This video is meant more of as an out of the box sound/playability comparison.

    • @maximillianmorrison9865
      @maximillianmorrison9865 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking almost the same thing lol. Play famous brass lines from holst or wagner. I would say john williams but disney ruins everything.

    • @antames
      @antames 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tony, I appreciate your comment. Lots of composers are not well versed in instruments they are writing for, so it is unrealistic to expect this in Chris' demonstration. If you want to hear fully fleshed out cues, then I suggest you visit each of the manufacturers' websites and listen to their audio demos. This video is helpful for those who are wanting a brief comparison of each product on offer and what they can expect out of the box. Thanks.

    • @tonyr.4778
      @tonyr.4778 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@antames That's true that every composer may have different goals or info they want from these videos, and my wants are just my point of view. Sample library developers will of course show their products in the best light and would never mention the weaknesses, so third party reviews are more likely to give you information the developers won't before making purchasing decisions.

      I think you are missing the point of why libraries exists in first place. They provide inspiration for composer because they sound good enough; they can be used to create mock ups; and they can always serve for some arrangement if they are realistic enough; even they can be used to double the orchestra in some productions; or they can be used by amateurs or musicians who don’t have access to an orchestra and want to record their tracks. And maybe there are scenarios I am not considering now. Doing all of that with real orchestra, would be expensive, and calling the whole orchestra each time you have a musical idea if you are a composer would be annoying as well. And yes, scoring is always possible, but as a composer myself I can say it is more inspiring having a nice sound.

    Hallo,
    I just purchased CineBrassPro. Luckily - for 50 % price.
    Some things I had no idea about - there are just four (!) articulations : three short notes of different lengths and one sustain - legato. Important - no possibility of vibrato notes, not even thinking about vibrato crossfade possibilty... ! Shocking. Also - no shakes, no scoops, falls, glissandos, phrases etc.
    As a top of a list - zero feedback from Cinesamples.
