Thanks for this Hoon. What you did to clean the grinder is too much work. Here's what I do. Unplug it, then take the top cup/Bean holder off. Then I remove the top grinder piece. You can see all of the beans that are in and around the blades. At this point, I Take out the water tank, and the drip and utility trays. I then bring the unit into the driveway, outside and put onto a table. Then I take a can of "Air Duster" and spray it into the grinder, and it blows out everything in there and it is crystal clear. Then just put the top back in and lock it. Then you are good to go! works like a champ!
I have been using this site for my Breville Infuser and the stand alone Breville grinder for about 2 yrs now your great. Thank you for the thorough step by step video.
Agree a magnet pick up tool would make it way easier to get those washers out. Thanks for another great video of something I probably wouldn’t have attempted
Love Hoon. He always gives great explanations and helpful tips on keeping the Breville Barista espresso machine in top shape. I have been watching you videos for about two years. When I first started I was all over the place with a consistent cup of espresso. Now I always weigh my beans and time my pour. My pours are more consistent for a perfect espresso now. Currently my grinder is not grinding my beans. Searching Hoon's site I found a video detailing how to correct this problem. I honestly don't know what I would do without these videos. Thanks to Hoon, I can keep this machine in the best condition possible. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you and keep up the great work.
Thanks so much for sharing! Was able to clean my Breville grinder perfectly and reassemble. It was EASY with your video! Now I’m gonna have some coffee!
I started watching your videos very recently. I’ve owned my machine for a couple of years now and started having pressure problems. I clean the portafilter when needed, descale, but had never really gone deep into the machine’s operation. After watching a few of your videos I was able to get the machine running with grinds between 12 and 8, whereas I was at 2 or 1 and the pressure was still too low! I watched your video adjusting the water temperature and then this one to deep clean the grinder. Voilà - a significant improvement. Thank you! Now I’m starting to look at calibrating my machine for the perfect infusion, by weighing out my beans and timing it. I’m getting better coffee every week and am getting the full potential of my machine. Next, special tools and techniques. I’ll keep watching!
I notice in their instructions they say that the felt washer is placed first when putting it all back together, before the behind the metal washer. Also it states that the grind size should be set to 16 before starting. Any of these make a difference? Without your video, most people would not attempt this. Thanks!
My grinding is not working both manual or auto.. Already cleaning like this no rock or any coffee bean stuck but still not working.. do you know how to fix😢
Thank you so much for the video Hoon I just cleaned my grinder and descaled my machine when I was cleaning the grinder there was a lot of coffee in it and I was able to get it out thanks again!
for anyone like myself that might have destroyed the felt washer they are available on the Breville site, www.breville.com/us/en/parts-accessories/parts/sp0001575.html you can also google sp0001575 felt washer and you might be able to find it outside of Breville.
Thanks so much for the video. My grinder stopped grinding entirely, so I thought cleaning might fix it. The weird part I’ve noticed your grinder acts differently. For example, I have to use a screw driver to stop the grinder from spinning while I take the very top nut off. I’m trying to figure out if that’s normal or not.
The felt washer can be obtained through Breville but they no longer have phone support for this, nor can you order it online. Send them a message through their website. They will email you back and ask you where the Breville was purchased and the date, the model number and the 4 digit batch number which is stamped where the label is on the bottom of the machine. After you send that along with your name, address and phone number, they will then send you an invoice for about $12 ($6 for washer and $6 for shipping) BUT THIS IS FOR ONE WASHER!!, it used to be for a pack of 3. So don't bother unless you want to pay $12 for a piece of felt. Go to Michael's and get some felt and punch out your own.
Hoon it helps if you tap the top of the hopper and use the lid as kind of a air thing to push air through it by pushing it on and off fast and then hitting the top of the hopper
Use an empty ice cube tray to keep track of the order of the nut, washer and locknut and ring and washer etc. Place parts in empty cube holes from left to right and reverse the order when re-assembling. You don't want to get the order mixed up!
hello my friend and thank you for all your informative videos!!!! thank you for all your information about the breville!!!! but too bad that on TH-cam it is not in French translation but thanks to you!!!
When you're cleaning the coffee grinder instead of using tweezers to get the washers and parts out trying extendable magnet you can buy them at the auto shop
There is absolutely no reason to replace the top burr unless you've screwed it up somehow. It'll last for hundreds of kilos of coffee before you need to change it. Just adjust it down a notch if you're not getting a fine enough grind. The motor will most likely die before the burrs wear out.
@@HoonsCoffee I was getting no pressure even at finest setting 1, my Barista express is about 5-6 years old and has a non adjustable top burr, so I just ordered a new adjustable top burr, cleaned out grinder with rice and put in new burr, top burr set at 5 and side at 7 and now working perfect and with the same bag of lavazza cream E aroma coffee beans as before. So if anyone is not getting pressure and has an older machine with non adjustable top burr, getting the new adjustable burr is a good fix for about $25, even sounds totally different when grinding now... Good luck!

Should've watched your video first! - tried it on my own and ripped that delicate felt ring on my standalone Breville BCG820 model. So I had to make a replacement by cutting out a microfibre kitchen towel! Also on my BCG820 unit it had two large washer rings and one small ring (so nil of the tension washer matching the small washer as in your video).
For some reason I can’t screw the final part on with the two washers. Had to use one washer instead and was able to screw on. Any tips on what I might be doing wrong? Is it ok to use just one washer?

While i was extracting my espresso, the portafilter started moving to the left and eventually unlocks itself and falls off the espresso machine. I’m not sure why I hope you know what I can do to fix it :(
Thank you for the video. I have a quick question, the reason why I viewed the video as my barista express was making a ratcheting sound, only after I tried a new bean (very light roast of Ethiopian yirgacheffe., small bean and quite hard). I clean everything, I run the hopper empty its fine. I put a little bit of beans it and it appears to grind ok. I fill the hopper and again, I get the ratcheting sound. It sounds like a gear cant engage and keeps skipping. No grinds come out when the machine is ratcheting. Any thoughts on what this might be?
After purchasing the machine, I occasionally cleaned the grinder, but today I completely disassembled it and deep cleaned it. But I found that there was no last washer. So, I found that no washer went right under the star-shaped blade. Is this normal or have to purchase the washer? Thank you.
I just noticed the same thing with my machine. I would assume it's important as it should help reduce friction and heat. I purchased mine 2nd hand and it was previously refurbished by Breville. I'm planning on calling Breville to see if they can send a replacement.

This is exactly what I needed to see. There is so much oily buildup under the blade that won’t vacuum out it doesn’t work well anymore.
You did a great job explaining everything. Thank you very much for doing these videos. It helps a lot of viewers like me out a lot.

Hi Hoon, did the clean. Double checked the fitting. The finest setting is not fine enough.
If you add a little strong magnet to your tweezers itvmay help taking out the washers
Super easy! Thanks for the video, as always super well explaining!
Great vid Hoon! I think a retrieval magnet would help the the small parts out.
