@Kerry Fitzharris hi Kerry, thank you so much for your kind comment, you made my day! I am glad you find the video helpful😊 I posted a new one a week or so ago as an update to cleaning the grinder and I think you'll find it very helpful. Have a great week 🙂👍☕️
Wow, thank you very much for such an amazing comment - you made my day! I'm so glad that people such as yourself found the video helpful. I've made an updated video with some time-saving hacks in our "Shorts" section. The video says "Update" on it. If you've done the main cleaning video, the update shows you how to streamline the cleaning process. If you've not yet subscribed to our channel, please do so. It will really help us out! Hi Olivia! LOL, no worries about the felt washer, even if you lost or damaged it. Breville informed me that the felt washer is really more for preventing damage during shipping and is not an integral component for the grinder. We've used ours for well over 2 years without it and have had zero problems. We also bought the Breville Smart Pro grinder, which is essentially identical, and it did not have the felt ring from the factory. Thank you for watching and commenting. If you're not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it really helps us out! Have a great weekend! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffeethanks for the reassurance, Just broke mine and have been searching the internet for any type of info as to how important it is, and if it needs replacing..
This is fantastic. We've owned the machine for 5 years and I've never even taken the but out. This gave me the confidence to get it out (I've watched 5 other videos but it was just stuck). Little did I know there were so many more cleaning possibilities below!
Thank you Kate! I'm glad you found the video helpful! If you go to our "Shorts" video section, there is a shortened updated version. It will show you how to clean the grinder in a quick manner after you've done the initial big cleaning. If you haven't subscribed to our channel yet, please do so - it really helps us out! You are a saint. This video helps save people living in some countries where customers receive very little/minimum support about Breville from either retail shops or wholesalers. Great job Grounds for Divorce Coffee.
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words - I really appreciate it! I'm so glad that this video has helped out so many people. Hi there...have you removed the steam wand tip and cleaned? Check out this video from Breville, it is very good. th-cam.com/video/qzONnMd4rsU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8DQ0bmUPZvS6E0UV Please let me know if this helped or not. If not, I will see what I can do further for you. If you're not already subscribed to our channel, please do - it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕
Wonderful learning experience! I regularly have cleaned out the top grinder for at least 7 years, but this video convinced me I could complete the entire process. The felt washer was almost impossible to see with all the coffee on it. And, thank you for the very clear re-assembling instructions! The tip about using the hairdryer was genius!
@lauriemoomjian4999 hey Laurie, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm glad you found the video helpful. 😊 You can discard the felt washer, it is not essential to the grinders operation. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
LOL...thank you Andro 😆 It is surprising how much of a flavour difference there is in coffee made with a well maintained grinder! I hope you will subscribe to our channel, lots of fun stuff on there and more coming! Thank you for your support! Cheers, Rick
Fantastic video, I made the mistake of pouring water into the grinder instead of the usual water thing. This video saved me quite a bit of cash, could clean on the gunk out and works perfectly now. Thank you! Side note, I vacuumed up the felt washer, but found it in the vacuum bag luckily.
Hey, that's great it helped you! Don't worry about the felt washer, it is not an important piece. It is really more for stopping damage during shipping. The Breville Parts Rep told me it did not need replacing, as mine disintegrated. We bought the Breville Smart Pro grinder, which mechanically is almost identical to the one on the Barista Express. It did not even have the felt washer from the manufacturing process. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it'll really help us out! Thank you, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
Great presentation! Thanks for sharing👏🏻👏🏻👍🏿 4:41 … My 2021-22 Oracle has a 10mm nut, lock & flat washers, but NO additional washers, except felt, below the “fan.”🤔 Great tip using vac to lift the “fan!” FYI: no need to actually wash anything if you use the Breville “Scoop Brush” to clean the fan blades & burr grinder… then use paper towel or microfiber cloth to wipe down parts. Breville “Customer Service” is quite excellent via phone. They sent me videos for this cleaning process. FYI: you cannot over torque the nut, as the shaft will turn. Breville recommends turning grind setting to highest (coarsest) setting to remove the upper Burr Grinder… clean/vacuum it before “popping” it out to avoid a mess of beans/grinds… mine was frozen… twist L-R-L at the base of the folding wire handle. Patience may be required… it will eventually break free.
I've had my Oracle Touch for almost 4 years. Best espresso machine ever! And I've had a few. I am fastidious about my daily, weekly, and machine-initiated cleaning BUT...I've never taken the grinder completely apart. Thank you SO much for this easy-to-follow, clear and concise video. This will now be part of my cleaning regimen.
Thank you so much Kim! Now that the big cleaning is done, there is a short video in our "Shorts" section called "Update" that will give you fast, easy maintenance cleaning tips. Thanks for a great video. We are working our way through. The basket at 1:45 refuses to budge on our machine and I'm hesitant to use force in case I break metal clip away from plastic ring. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.
Hi there, thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! Yes, there is an easy fix. Dial your grind setting all the way to the most coarse setting. There is likely some small chunks of beans creating pressure between the top and bottom burr, which is preventing you from turning the top burr. Let me know how it works out. If you're not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Wow! Thank you for your quick response. Our machine goes to 16. I've tried that with no success. I took over from my partner who had removed the centre nut and I replaced it and set to 1 then moved to 16. I got a fine wooden skewer and worked around the rim and lifted a little bit of coffee ground residue but still no progress. I have tried small movements back and forth but no success. I could try brute force but I'm reluctant. I can't see how to add an image
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Good news I worked away scraping ail I could with my small wooden skewer from around the rim of the upper burr component and eventually it let go and released, thanks for the help and encouragement. I'll do the rest tomorrow
Thankyou so much for doing this videos. I followed what you said step by step and managed to clean my machine and get it working again after it stopped grinding. Thankyou Thankyou thankyou
You're most welcome & that is so great to hear! There is a more condensed version of how to clean the unit in our TH-cam Shorts section that you'll find helpful. Thanks for this video. It is really clear and comprehensive. Also, even if you don’t pull the mechanism apart, it’s a good idea to at least check the hex nut is secure from time to time. I took mine apart for the first time since I bought it 5 years ago and found that the hex nut was nearly falling off. A stitch in time!!!
Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate your review! Sounds like you caught things in time on yours. I highly recommend a thorough cleaning at the minimum of monthly (depending upon use). This is a great and very informative video. Very much appreciated by me. Saved me from going out and buying a new one at $200, Breville Smart Grinder. Mine is now back up and grinding perfectly and I’ve added the full maintenance to my monthly chores. Thanks so much for this.
Hi John, thank you very much, I am happy to hear it helped you out! I was raised with the saying "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure". Regular maintenance on your grinder will not only help your machine last longer, your coffee will taste a lot better for it! Try doing this in between changing roasts/brands, it makes a huge difference. If you only drink one brand/roast, I'd recommend doing this cleaning every couple of weeks. Once you become comfortable doing it, you will have a turn around time of less than 10 minutes. I hope you'll subscribe to our channel, we need your support! Great guide, thank you for sharing. I have managed by accident to destroy felt ring with high power Dyson vacuum ;-) Silly me. As someone actually pointed out in comments it does not matter and grinder works well without it too.
Hi Adam, no worries about the felt ring. Been using ours without it for over 2 years and no issues. Breville told me the ring is more for shipping protection. Hi, good tutorial, I did this also and one key point is to make sure all parts are completely dry with trapped water. Especially the fan spreader. This will cause too much humidity in the area that cause a blockage. Dry parts completely. Possibly use compressed air.
@dashbmw thank you, glad you liked it. Yes, drying is essential. You could use compressed air or even a hair dryer to make sure it is all fully dried. 😎👍☕️

Good video thanks for making it for us. I think you must have vacuumed up the thrust washer that is under the fan, at least mine had one when I disassembled it, I hope you find it.
Hi Stacy, thank you for watching and commenting, it is appreciated! Some of these units have 2 washers and the felt ring, others seem to only have one washer. I'm not sure why there are differences, but I still have the thin single washer mine came with. I've made an updated video that is in our TH-cam Shorts section called "update". Great video on the cleaning procedure! I followed all the steps and reassembled the Breville to get rid of the sound of the clutch engaging (it was having issue grinding some beans). Now, I cant get any pressure from my espresso. What might have gone wrong?
Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm not sure why your pressure is acting up, the boiler is a totally different part of the machine. Check out this link and see if it helps www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/cannot-generate-any-brew-pressure-whatsoever-with-breville-barista-express-bes870xl-t66020.html Try the steps recommended (pull a shot with no coffee. Great video just watch and instead of using vacuum I used the skewers to get the felt wash up two of them! Thanks for your video as my grinder was blocked now working again
Awesome video... Just a note: maybe mention/warn that the felt washer is there BEFORE you suggest using a vacuum to release the fan. My vacuum had a bit too much suction and I destroyed the felt washer before I learned it was there. Breville is a bit slow in sending replacement parts, but it is received now. Totally my fault, but your video made everything else progress brilliantly. Thanks!
Thank you for watching and your comment, that is a good idea going forward! Just an FYI to help you when the felt washer breaks down, it is not required for use on the grinder. My felt washer disintegrated, and when I spoke to Breville, the repair guy told me not to worry about it. I've been using our machine heavily for 2+ years with zero issues. Apparently, the felt ring is to absorb bumps during shipping. It makes life WAY EASIER without it lol. In fact, our Breville Smart Pro grinder we bought 6 months ago did not even have the felt ring installed. Thank you again for the really positive feedback on the video, it is appreciated! I hope you've subscribed to the channel, we need help to grow the following. Cheers, Rick 😎👍☕️
Can you run the grinder to remove old coffee grinds without the top burr in place. I just bought an almost new Breville Barista and unlocked the burr before realizing I need a vacuum to clean it out and the top burr won't lock back on because the old grinds fell down into the grinder. Thanks!
Hi Suz, thank you - I am glad you enjoyed it! Yup, the dental floss works great just make sure it doesn't fray in the fan. I hope you will please support our channel by subscribing, we really need the help! Cheers, Rick :)

Rick - thanks for the fantastic video - it was exactly what I needed to ensure I got all of the washers replaced correctly and I especially appreciated the dental floss tip - hadn't recognized the need to get that deep into the fan.
I also wanted to mention I used "canned air" to follow a good drying of the washed parts. It also worked well on the felt ring but you do need to be careful to not direct the pressurized air directly at the felt - use it at an oblique angle to blow the ground coffee off the surface of the ring.
Hi Ken, my pleasure, and thank you for the great feedback! It always makes my day to know that my videos help people out, and I do my best to answer any questions. Once you've got the machine well cleaned out, doing weekly maintenance cleanings is a breeze and you'll be able to skip using the floss, etc. I have an updated clip in the video Shorts category. The felt ring can be tossed out, and it turns out to be non-essential for the grinder operation. I have been told by the Breville parts department that it is really more for shipping the unit. I've used our grinder without it for over 2 years with no issue. In fact, our Breville Smart Pro grinder did not even have the felt ring from the factory. Using the compressed air canister is a great idea! Get yourself a set of grinder cleaning brushes off Amazon, they are inexpensive and really work great. Thanks for making this video. It is very helpful. I do have one question about the grinding fan washers that weren't able to be shown during removal. Do you know the size of those washers? We just ordered a whole new grinding fan kit from Breville and that washer below the fan was not included. I think I may have vacuumed that washer out a while ago and now the grinder is not grinding fine enough. Thanks very much for you help.
Hi John, Thank you for watching and commenting, I am glad you've found the video helpful. I did some research for you regarding the metal washer that goes under the fan in the grinder. It is a bit of a tricky part to find information online. I know some variants might have 1 or 2 washers, but I believe the 2 washers together would equal the same thickness as the single washer. It is my thought that these washers just act as a shim to ensure the fan is at the correct height. I have found a page you can order the washers: www.ereplacementparts.com/breville-bes870xl-the-barista-express-parts-c-116052_116055_290179.html I believe the washer you need is listed on 06.28 and is part number SP0001574 and lists for $3.99. I hope this helps you out, let me know how it goes! If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕
I didn't think I was having grinder problems but thought I should clean it, I cleaned all in the basket but I cannot twist the top piece out and afraid the wire might break trying to twist it to get it out. It's really locked in there. Anny suggestions?
Hi Karen, thank you for watching and commenting. Don't panic, this can happen if you did not turn the grind setting dial all the way to the coarsest grind setting. Doing so takes pressure off the burrs and will allow you to twist the top burr basket off. Oftentimes a piece of a bean gets wedge in between the burrs and causes the pressure. Just turn the dial to the highest number and the pressure will come off. If this does not work, toss a few beans in the grinder and run them through to clear out the burrs. Let me know how it goes for you! I hope you will please subscribe to our channel, we need help to grow the following! Cheers, Rick 🙂
Thanks I kept trying and finally it worked, it kinda flew off. It's really got a lot grind powder. Now I can get the fan off. 1st time doing this clean so ty for your video. My first ring is not completely closed it's round but has a slit it Iooking like itis joined is this normal?
Hi Steve, no worries, this can happen. I use either 2 chopsticks or bamboo skewers to remove the fan. Put one stick on the opposite side of the fan, press in towards the center to pinch it between the skewers and lift. If this doesn't work, you could use your vacuum to suction onto the top of the fan. Let me know if this helped, and if it didn't, I'll see what other ideas I can come up with for you. Cheers, Rick
I thought I had the same problem, but realized that this video doesn't apply to my Breville Dose Control Pro, Model BCG600 SILUSC /B. On my grinder, the Grind Size adjustment wheel stays on the grind. The disassembly process to get to the fan chamber is substantially different. Its shown in th-cam.com/video/SoVMNke1tEg/w-d-xo.html I'm not brave enough to do this every time I want to clean.
Hi Max, thank you for watching and commenting! Deep cleaning is important, as it removes the build-up of old beans and oils.
Obrigado! Rick :)
Thanks for the detailed video! After removing the nut and washers you can easily take it out. However mine is hard stuck. Any tips for getting it out without damaging it?
Hi Mikkel, thank you for watching and your kind comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. When you say the part is stuck, I'm assuming you're referring to the bottom burr grinder. Are you able to lift up the bottom burr grinder and the fan as one piece from the body of the machine? If so, I would be inclined to soak the bottom burr and the fan in quite hot water (not boiling hot, you don't want to melt or deform the plastic body of the fan). The hot water should cause the metal to release. If unable to lift it out, you might try very carefully tapping on the bottom burr. I'd highly recommend putting something (piece of plastic or wood or a cloth) on top of the surface of the burr before tapping on it so you protect the teeth of the burr from damage. *I've never experienced the unit being stuck like this, so I am using my best guess how to separate it. Let me know if any of these ideas work...Best of luck on it! Cheers, Rick 😊 👍☕️
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Hi Rick, Thanks for the help! Unfortunately I am completely unable to lift up the bottom burr and therefore also the fan. I can move it +-10 degrees to each side, and lift it 2mm up, but thats it. It seems hard stuck to the bolt in the middle. I've tried tapping it with a wrench, but nothing happens. Haven't tried water, as i'm afraid of the implications of it. I was trying to clean it, because it kept jamming on some of the lighter roasted beans i bought.. Have you had anything similar happen?
@@mikkeld5995 Hi Mikkel, that is a tough situation! I know this is a stupid question but I will ask it just in case - did you remove the nut on top of the bottom burr? Also, when I said to use water, I meant only after the bottom burr and fan came out and if still stuck together. Do not use any water in the actual grinder machine mechanism! Is the unit still under any warranty program (either 1yr Manufacturer's Warranty or did you buy an extended warranty)? If no longer under any warranty, I would look to get a pair of pliers and then put some sort of covers over the teeth on the pliers to protect the teeth on the burr from getting bent or crushed. If they get damaged, it will not align properly with the top burr and will cause further damage. Once I had something to make sure the burr does not get damaged, I would use the pliers and try working the burr loose. You will need to be very careful not to damage the bur and/or the metal drive shaft. It is extremely unusual to hear of it being so badly stuck to need this level of force. However, it sounds like the mechanism is having some sort of mechanical issue doing the grinding. If you are still unable to remove the burr, I would suggest taking it to a repair depot and asking for a repair price quote. Please let me know how it works out for you and I wish you success! Cheers, Rick

Just put about 750g of cumin seeds, through the machine. didnt realise i probably need to clean it out everytime i need to use it as a spice grinder. Still looks easy enough. thanks
Yikes! Lol...I'd recommend buying one of those cheap electric coffee grinders with the spinning blades for doing spices. They're relatively inexpensive to buy and worth it to keep your barista grinder in top shape. Keep in mind that the plastic body of the grinder on the barista machine may absorb the flavors & aromas of the spices you are grinding. Thank you for watching and commenting, it is appreciated. @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Personally I'd be more opposed to soap residue...hot water works well and less corrosion risk... I'd want to clean after some 'flavored' beans went thru as well...

Great video. Another easy way to get the coffee out of the crevices and to ensure it is dry is to use an air compressor to blow it out of you have one. I’m sure canned air works also but an air compressor is much stronger if canned air isn’t getting it out well enough.

Hello Rick, I followed all the cleaning steps just to make sure I was keeping up on maintenance of my machine. However, now I can get the grinder to grind my coffee fine enough to get correct pull pressure - never had an issue before and I’ve gone through the steps again on the grinder. Not sure what happened.
Hi Scott, No worries, sorry you've had some hiccups. I've never encountered any issues where cleaning will cause the coarseness to become affected. How do the teeth look on both burrs? Are they still even (no nicks or dings)? Are the edges still readonably sharp? If all looks good, then you need to look at the parts to ensure you've put them back in order. Also, let a tablespoon or so of grounds run through first to fill the fan up. It may need to fill in some of the cleaned voids to provide back pressure in the grinder (this is just an assumption though). If that is not the issue, how does the unit sound when operating? Does your model have the adjustable ring on the top burr? If it does, you can undo the metal clip that looks like a handle, then rotate the top ring one number smaller to go finer. Try these steps and then let me know what you find. Fingers crossed for you! 🤞 Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕️
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Thanks for the reply and I did go back and double check how I installed the grinder parts. All looked good from that end, and the parts look to be in good condition. The machine is about 3 years old and has been amazingly consistent (until now). The main thing I noticed after doing the deep clean of the grinder is that the grounds setting seems way off and too course. I can get good pressure on the gauge if I put the grinds through a second grind with another coffee grinder I have. Not ideal! Also, a question I have is that my grinder settings on the Breville go from 1 to 16. In the instructions that came with it, it said to reset the grind level to 5 but that is still too coarse and even going to 1 and setting the adjustable ring to a finer setting doesn’t seem to make enough difference. Not having my machine working perfectly feels like having a car in the shop - life is on hold without a good cappuccino in the morning!
@scottdouglas7781 Hi Scott, sorry for the delay, I didn't get a notification of your reply. 😖 Okay, so we can take the assembly and parts condition off the table. Check out this video link, he does a good job explaining the grinder settings th-cam.com/video/sa8siw_bw6g/w-d-xo.html Short of this, I've done some research, and it could possibly be one of the following issues: 1) Are you positive that you replaced the metal washer(s) that go under the impeller fan? They act as shims to lift the fan, which also raises the lower burr. The washer(s) are very thin and will make a huge difference in the performance of the grinder. I'm thinking you may not have replaced them. 2) I've read that a slipping clutch could also be the issue, but I think you would hear it slipping. Take the grinder apart again and double-check for the washer(s) under the fan. Short of this, I would recommend calling Breville to see what they suggest. Let me know how you do with it, fingers crossed for you! Cheers, Rick 🤞😬
Hi there, I use this vacuum and it works brilliantly for it! amzn.to/3xpDMgV It is dedicated to only cleaning my grinder and was a great purchase! @thomasgentil4907 Hi Thomas, thank you for watching and commenting. Two important things to remember: 1) Clean the grinder whenever you change roasts or brands to ensure proper flavor. 2) At a minimum, clean the grinder out at least every couple of weeks. Oils from the coffee beans will go rancid and will negatively alter the flavor of your coffee. Once you've done a deep clean like the one in this video, you can get away with a condensed version. Check out our TH-cam Shorts section for a 1 minute video showing a simplified cleaning that I think you'll like. @StephanieFazioLealouCooks Hi Stephanie, I'm glad you found the video helpful. Don't worry about replacing the felt washer. It is not an essential component for operating the grinder. I've used our grinder for over 3 years without the felt ring with no complications. I was told by Breville Parts dept that it is primarily in place for shipping protection and is not required to operate the grinder. In fact, we also have a Breville Smart Pro grinder (pretty much identical components), and it did not even have the felt ring from the factory. I hope this helps you out! Hi, many thanks for the vid. I notice your top burr does not have the ability to alter the grind settings. But confused as I thought an alterable top burr was an integral part of the grind settings.
Hi David, Thank you for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it! I was also surprised to find that our particular machine does not have an adjustable top burr. It appears that some models do not have the selectable to burr, which is somewhat frustrating. The adjustable one will have a number ring on it and typically is set at 6 from the factory. Higher than 6 is getting coarser and below 6 gets finer. Remember, you still have the grind selector on your machine, so I recommend slow increments of change to be able to dial it in just right. I hope this helps and that you've subscribed to our channel. Thanks again, Rick 😎👍☕️
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Hi Rick. Thanks again for taking the time to answer. I bought a second hand Sage/Breville last week and was having problems with the pressure. On inspection of the top burr I was surprised to see the non-adjustable top burr. On purchasing of an alterable top burr I was able to get the pressure right.
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee On further investigation it looks like the 2017 machine had a non-adjustable top burr. And to take up even more of your time, now that I have the extraction at the right pressure, although I think the coffee tastes fine, it is a very fast extraction time much less than 20 secs, any thoughts? Again many thanks and I’m off to clean out the grinder properly, as per your instructions.
thanks so much rick for a every detailed video, the filter size on my machine keeps on flashing and the grinder is not working, do you think this is the case? thankyou!
Hi Aquilanisss, thank you for your compliment- I really appreciate it! Please tell me the make and model of your machine. I will do some research to see if I can find out the likely problem. Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
@@Aquilanis my pleasure! The lights for the Single/Double Shot will flash if the hopper is not locked in place. Additionally, the hopper needs to be locked in place or it won't operate for safety reasons. Thak your hopper off, dial your grind setting to max coarse grind and then remove the top burr, bottom burr and fan. Clean everything well and put back in place. This should correct the issue. Let me know if it doesn't and I can offer some other tips. Good luck! Cheers, Rick 😊👍☕️

Hi Pat Rick...We suggest doing this each time you switch from one type of coffee to another and if you are using the same coffee consistently, do this clean every couple of weeks or so. Oils from the coffee beans go stale and if left long enough go rancid, this will cause unpleasant tasting coffee. Once you get the hang of it, the process only takes a few minutes. You can skip washing the parts each time and wash them every 3rd or 4th cleaning. Trust me, you will notice your coffee tasting much brighter when you keep the machine cleaned regularly! Thank you for watching and commenting and we thank you for subscribing to our channel, we really appreciate your support! Cheers, Rick & Paula 🙂
Great video. I found this video because the grinder on my espresso machine stopped working and was making a loud noise. Unfortunately, I can not remove the upper burr to save my life! I've read that it can be difficult, but it is impossible. I've warped the handle a bit trying to get it off. What can I do?
Hi Catherine, thank you for watching and commenting! Make sure you dial the grinder setting all the way to coarse before removing the top burr. If it is not dialed back to as coarse of a setting as possible, it puts upwards pressure from the bottom burr onto the top burr. If you have any beans or pieces of grinds still in between the 2 burrs, it can also cause pressure. This pressure can cause resistance and prevent the top burr from being able to be unlocked. I hope this helps, let me know! If you haven't already subscribed, please do...we need your help! Cheers, Rick 🙂
Thank you for your response. I ended up taking the machine to a commercial repair shop and it turned out there was a metal piece in the burr he believes was the tip of a screw. Thank you again.
@@catherineperez8559 HI Catherine, my pleasure. I'm glad you got it fixed! You have wonder how a part of a screw got in there to begin with...yikes! Does this actually make a difference in the taste of your coffee? I am worried about doing the full disassembly because I might screw something up, especially the felt washer. I understand that all of the coffee grinds in the nooks and crannies will be cleaned out, but won't they just be replaced by new grinds after you use the grinder a few times. Won't any grinds in there just become inert and neutral regarding flavour transfer?
Hi Wayne, Yes, cleaning it regularly makes a big difference in flavour of your coffee. The grinds are organic and the oils in them will go rancid over time. It will taint the flavour of your coffee. Cleaning it out will also extend the life of your grinder. Dont worry about the felt ring, Breville had told me it is really only for shipping purposes and does not require replacing. We have operated ours for over 2 years without it and have not had any issues. I hope this helps you out and if you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it'll really help us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
Little late the party, but I would definitely recommend a telescoping magnetic pick-up tool from your local auto shop or hardware store for taking out those washers more easily and not dropping them into the thing. A narrow brush or old toothbrush would also be better for unseating all those fines, and possibly be better than the floss for the "fan gaps". You probably could have soaked and dried out that felt ring, too, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy a pack of new ones online for cheap. Thanks for showing the process, always makes one more confident after seeing it done.
Hi there, welcome to the party 🥳 lol. Those are some good tips as well. Thank you for watching and commenting with them! The felt washer is not a necessary component, per the guy from the Breville parts department. I've not used one in our machine for over 2 years. It was in place for shipping purposes and did nothing essential for operation. In fact, our new Breville Smart Pro grinder never came with one in place. Those felt rings are ridiculously delicate and soaking it would likely cause it to disintegrate. If you have a minute, go look in our Shorts video section. You'll find a few updated tips for cleaning, which actually mention similar tips you gave. This video was a first go at making the cleaning video, and I developed some ways to do it more easily over the past couple of years. Your magnet tip is a really good idea, I appreciate that! @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Thanks for the reply! I just got a second-hand Barista Express as a gift for my mother, hence searching up a few vids on how to clean it back to near new. @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee hello, I did this today and rinsed the felt washer and let it dry. Would it be better if I just take it out since you said the felt washer isn’t really necessary?
Thank you for watching and commenting! Cleaning the grinder is critical to ensure longer lasting equipment and preventing the old oils from the bean causing the flavour to go off. The oils will eventually go rancid and significantly changes the taste of the coffee. If you're not already subscribed to our channel, please do so - it will really help us out! Have a great weekend! Hi , thank you so much , I’ve learned a lot from this video , it’s very helpful 🌺 I cleaned the grinder as shown in the video for the first time since I bought the machine , I was surprised with the amount of ground coffee residue in there 😰😰 finally no loud noise from the grinder now 👍👍 thank you so much
Hello Hiba! You are very welcome & we are delighted to hear the video helped you out! Regular maintenance of your grinder & the barista machine will help you enjoy amazing coffee. As a rule of thumb, I clean our grinder weekly. It keeps everything running smoothly & I get to see if any parts look like they are wearing out. Being a coffee company & avid coffee drinkers, our Breville gets a ton of use. You should also notice better flavour with your coffee after cleaning the grinder too. Hi Peggy, thank you for watching and commenting. Typically, the issue you are having is due to the grind setting being cranked up, causing pressure between the top/bottom burrs. Dial the setting to the most coarse (16 or so) and it will remove the pressure and you should be able to remove the top burr. Let me know if this helped! Please subscribe to the channel, we need help growing our following! Cheers, Rick 🙂
Hi Keith, have you cleaned the grinder thoroughly? There may be small pieces of beans that is affecting the switch that recognizes the hopper is in place. Try using either a small brush to clean it out or if possible, use a vacuum to extract any difficult to reach pieces. Give the hopper a good brushing as well, not just inside the grinder. Let me know if this corrects the issue. Cheers, Rick 🙂👍☕

Hi Zach, thank you for watching and commenting. No worries about the felt washer. It was really intended to be in for shipping but not necessary for proper operation of the grinder. I checked with Breville about it even ours started to disintegrate. The guy said to just toss out the felt washer. We've been using ours since the Spring of 2021 with zero problems. Keep your grinder clean to enjoy the best flavor possible from your coffee and you're golden! I hope you've subscribed to our channel, we need your support! Cheers, Rick 😎👍☕️
Has anyone encountered the clip not moving the burr when you try to turn it counter clockwise? How did you unstick it? I emptied the hopper, ran our final grounds, vacuumed the grinder and the clip won’t budged. It is truly stuck. Is our machine dead? 😢 It works fine otherwise.
Hi Caroline, Thank you for watching and commenting. Dial the grind setting all the way back to the coarse setting. This will take upward pressure off from the bottom burr and will free up the top burr so you can turn the clip. You likely have part of a bean stuck between the burrs. Please let me know if this fixes it for you. If it doesn't, I will see what else I can think of. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do - we need help to grow the channel. @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee thank you so much. I tried that and it was still stuck. I hadn’t ever cleaned out the grinder as you describe since we bought the machine three years ago, so it was caked with coffee bean oil, and it acted like glue almost. So I ran a 1/4 cup of rice through the grinder and I think that absorbed enough of the oils to clear the gunk enough so I could twist the clip part out. Then I watched your video and followed the instructions to clean the parts and reassemble step by step. Thank you soooo much. This is such a helpful video. And yes, will subscribe right now. I also sent your video to a friend with the same machine so she can clean her grinder too.

Hi there, don't panic - it is no issue. After posting that video, I spoke with the Breville Parts Rep and they advised that felt washer is of no real consequence. It is primarily installed to reduce vibration during shipping. Our felt ring disintegrated over 2 years ago and I never replaced it. I've not had any problems with it not being installed. Additionally, the Breville Smart Pro grinder we bought (identical grinder components) did not have a felt ring from the factory. Rest easy, your machine is still fully usable without it! Hope this puts your mind at ease. Now go make yourself a nice latte and enjoy your day! If you've not yet subscribed to pur channel, please do, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎👍☕️
My coffee machine has been making noise , and it sounds like the coffee is getting stuck in the grinder. I tried to remove the top grinder component, but it seems stuck and won't come out easily. It doesn't seem as simple as yours, where you can just turn it and take the whole thing out. Could you provide some guidance?
Hi Stephanie, no worries - it is an easy fix. Sometimes small pieces of coffee bean remain stuck between the top & bottom burrs. This causes pressure that makes removal of the top burr difficult. All you need to do is dial back the grind setting to the most coarse setting. This widens the space between the burrs and releases the pressure. You will then be able to easily remove the top burr. If you have any issues with it, feel free to let me know. Thank you for watching and commenting. I would really appreciate you subscribing to our channel, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😀👍☕

Hi Arooj, the felt ring is not required and you're okay to use the grinder without it. It was more of an item for shipping protection. I've used ours without it for almost 2 years with no issues. A Breville Rep told me it was not necessary and is not even a regularly stocked inventoried parts item. Hi Jeremy, make sure that you put all the components back in their proper place in order. For example, if you removed metal washers under the fan. Cleaning the grinder will not have damaged the machine, but it may slightly alter grinds if the machine has not been cleaned. Grinds get under things and can ever so slightly alter grind settings. Does your particular machine have the adjustable top burr? If it does, remove the metal handle clip and pay close attention to the number that the burr is set at so you can go back if needed. Adjust to a lower number for finer, but do it incrementally. Let me know if this helped. Cheers, Rick

Hi, my smart grinder pro suddenly dropped from the usual 14 to 6 settings. Does this means the upper burr assembly has been worn out? Does anyone can confirm this?
Make sure you still have the bottom washer under the bottom burr, The width of that washer can cause the burrs to be too separated to grind as it did before that washer was removed. In my case I inadvertently vacuumed that washer while cleaning, but I was lucky to have found it while emptying my "coffee only" vacuum. That explains why I had to grind finer and finer to get a good shot of espresso. Now I'm in the proper range for my grind settings.
Great video, thank you! I will definitely do this today. My machine has never been cleaned. I just ordered the tablets to decalcify. For some reason, my coffee is just not tasting great like when the machine was new. The steamer isn't really frothing up the oat milk. Does anyone have any suggestions for milk alternatives that froth well? Much appreciated!
Hi Jill...thank you for watching, Subscribing and commenting...we really appreciate your support! We're glad to hear you liked the video, your coffee will taste a lot better after cleaning your machine! Soy is a great alternative and frothy well. Oatmilk is real best used for iced coffees, not for frothing. Additionally, you can try Almond milk but to us it often times has a scorched taste. Look out for 'barista edition' when choosing an oat milk (or any milk alternative) you want to froth. I believe it has something to do with the protein content. They add an ingredient that makes them froth better. I recently tried the Oatly oat milk barista edition and am quite happy with it. Best of luck!
hello, i did clean everything, but when I start the grinder, it makes an extra sound, as if it needs oil or I don't know... I say that it could be one of the following reasons: I tightened the nut too much (with a tool) maybe because of cleaning the up and bottom burr with water is it normal since it was recently cleaned what do you advise me? I'm worried.
@bluxen16 hi there...try to loosen the nut and only tighten finger tight. It does not need to be torqued on. Cleaning with water as I did won't harm the burrs, but make sure they're dry before re-installing. There is nothing requiring oiling, and it will only clog things up. Take it all apart, put back together, but don't over tighten the nut. Let me know how that works for you. If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so. It really helps us out! Hi Paul, this is a very good question. My best advice is to dial down the grind setting to the coarse grind. I'm having trouble opening the top burr. Mine is jammed .. I tried to push all the left over coffee beans and brush off the residue but it just wouldn't unlock , any ideas ? Thank you
Hi Jessica, thank you for watching and commenting. Dial the grind setting to the most coarse grind you can. This will take pressure off the burrs for you to remove the top burr. If still jammed, run a few beans through at this setting then try to remove. Sometimes a piece can get stuck and this will help run it through the grinder. Hey there BobaFett2243, thank you for watching and commenting. The nut for the bottom burr grinder is 10mm. You may need a socket for the initial removal, but when putting it back on, only tighten it finger tight. You don't want to torque it on tight. Also, remember that it is a Left Hand Thread (reverse thread). Turn it it to the right to loosen and turn it to the left to tighten. Hope this helped you out. Please subscribe to our channel. Just a note whilst everything is apart it would be good to inspect the burr edges of upper and lower burr for sharpness , wear and damage. This is a high wear item and if worn will not allow a proper grind.
@dashbmw agreed, that is a valid point to note. We've been fortunate, even with heavy use for about 9 years, the burrs are still in sharp condition. It's always worth inspection, though, as something hard, like a pebble, may have gotten past the sorter at the coffee plant and into the bag of beans. Thank you for watching and commenting, we appreciate it! If you've not already subscribed to our channel, please do so, it really helps us out! Cheers, Rick 😎 👍 ☕️
Is the grinder turning? High pitched sound makes me think there is no resistance (like when the grinder is put of beans). I would do the cleaning steps I show but if nothing is grinding, I am inclined to say there is some form of connection from the motor that drives the grinder to the burr shaft. I would investigate that first.
@GroundsForDivorceCoffee each time I clean it, a few grinds get through and then it stops and makes the high pitch whirring noise, and the burrs stop rotating. This happened when I accidentally changed the grinder setting on the side by 1 mid grind. Not sure what that's done, but something is causing it to not grind. I've cleaned it x2 now so not sure :^( !

THE FELT WASHER!!!!! This video saved me. I pulled it out of the vacuum. Had NO idea. Thank you!

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffeethanks for the reassurance, Just broke mine and have been searching the internet for any type of info as to how important it is, and if it needs replacing..

Wonderful learning experience! I regularly have cleaned out the top grinder for at least 7 years, but this video convinced me I could complete the entire process.

Thanks for this video. It is really clear and comprehensive. Also, even if you don’t pull the mechanism apart, it’s a good idea to at least check the hex nut is secure from time to time.

Great video on the cleaning procedure! I followed all the steps and reassembled the Breville to get rid of the sound of the clutch engaging (it was having issue grinding some beans). Now, I cant get any pressure from my espresso. What might have gone wrong?

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee So good to know! Thanks!
Can you run the grinder to remove old coffee grinds without the top burr in place. I just bought an almost new Breville Barista and unlocked the burr before realizing I need a vacuum to clean it out and the top burr won't lock back on because the old grinds fell down into the grinder. Thanks!

Hi John,
Thank you for watching and commenting, I am glad you've found the video helpful.
I have found a page you can order the washers: www.ereplacementparts.com/breville-bes870xl-the-barista-express-parts-c-116052_116055_290179.html
I believe the washer you need is listed on 06.28 and is part number SP0001574 and lists for $3.99.
I hope this helps you out, let me know how it goes!

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffeeThanks so much the assist. I appreciate it.

Thanks I kept trying and finally it worked, it kinda flew off. It's really got a lot grind powder. Now I can get the fan off. 1st time doing this clean so ty for your video. My first ring is not completely closed it's round but has a slit it Iooking like itis joined is this normal?
I got it out with the bamboo stick, I also brushed around the fan. It is really packed.
I can't remove the fan. It doesn't come out easily like you show in the video. It is totally jammed in there. Any suggestions?
Hi Steve, no worries, this can happen. I use either 2 chopsticks or bamboo skewers to remove the fan. Put one stick on the opposite side of the fan, press in towards the center to pinch it between the skewers and lift.
If this doesn't work, you could use your vacuum to suction onto the top of the fan.
Let me know if this helped, and if it didn't, I'll see what other ideas I can come up with for you.
Cheers,
Rick

I thought I had the same problem, but realized that this video doesn't apply to my Breville Dose Control Pro, Model BCG600 SILUSC /B. On my grinder, the Grind Size adjustment wheel stays on the grind. The disassembly process to get to the fan chamber is substantially different. Its shown in

Obrigado!
Cheers,
Rick 😊 👍☕️
Cheers,
Rick

Just put about 750g of cumin seeds, through the machine. didnt realise i probably need to clean it out everytime i need to use it as a spice grinder. Still looks easy enough. thanks
Yikes! Lol...I'd recommend buying one of those cheap electric coffee grinders with the spinning blades for doing spices. They're relatively inexpensive to buy and worth it to keep your barista grinder in top shape.
Keep in mind that the plastic body of the grinder on the barista machine may absorb the flavors & aromas of the spices you are grinding.

Hi Scott,
No worries, sorry you've had some hiccups.
Cheers,
Rick 🙂👍☕️
Okay, so we can take the assembly and parts condition off the table.
Check out this video link, he does a good job explaining the grinder settings
th-cam.com/video/sa8siw_bw6g/w-d-xo.html
Short of this, I've done some research, and it could possibly be one of the following issues:
1) Are you positive that you replaced the metal washer(s) that go under the impeller fan? They act as shims to lift the fan, which also raises the lower burr. The washer(s) are very thin and will make a huge difference in the performance of the grinder. I'm thinking you may not have replaced them.
2) I've read that a slipping clutch could also be the issue, but I think you would hear it slipping.
Take the grinder apart again and double-check for the washer(s) under the fan. Short of this, I would recommend calling Breville to see what they suggest.
Let me know how you do with it, fingers crossed for you!
Cheers,
Rick 🤞😬

How often do you recommend doing this type of cleaning / disassembly?
1x a month?
@thomasgentil4907 Hi Thomas, thank you for watching and commenting. Two important things to remember: 1) Clean the grinder whenever you change roasts or brands to ensure proper flavor. 2) At a minimum, clean the grinder out at least every couple of weeks. Oils from the coffee beans will go rancid and will negatively alter the flavor of your coffee.

Hi, many thanks for the vid. I notice your top burr does not have the ability to alter the grind settings. But confused as I thought an alterable top burr was an integral part of the grind settings.
Hi David,
Thank you for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it!

My machine is Brand new, at what stage do you recommend performing this cleaning?
Thanks 🙏
@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee thanks 🙏 so much for your response.
I’ll certainly use this advice to a guide to my cleaning frequency. 👍

Hi Wayne,
Yes, cleaning it regularly makes a big difference in flavour of your coffee.

Hi Peggy, thank you for watching and commenting. Typically, the issue you are having is due to the grind setting being cranked up, causing pressure between the top/bottom burrs. Hey! I have the breville barista pro and it keeps saying lock hopper while it’s already locked in any advice? Thanks in advance

So Bout the felt washer. Does it make an impact if I break it and don't replace it?
Hi Zach, thank you for watching and commenting. No worries about the felt washer. It was really intended to be in for shipping but not necessary for proper operation of the grinder. I checked with Breville about it even ours started to disintegrate. The guy said to just toss out the felt washer. We've been using ours since the Spring of 2021 with zero problems.
Hi Caroline,
Thank you for watching and commenting.

You know the felt washer you specifically warned not to break? Yeah, I broke it. What now? 😢

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Top man! Thank you! 🙏

Hi Arooj, the felt ring is not required and you're okay to use the grinder without it. It was more of an item for shipping protection. I've used ours without it for almost 2 years with no issues. A Breville Rep told me it was not necessary and is not even a regularly stocked inventoried parts item.

I just did this exactly (before watching) and now my finest grind is too coarse - any suggestions?
Hi Jeremy, make sure that you put all the components back in their proper place in order. For example, if you removed metal washers under the fan.
Cleaning the grinder will not have damaged the machine, but it may slightly alter grinds if the machine has not been cleaned. Grinds get under things and can ever so slightly alter grind settings.
Does your particular machine have the adjustable top burr? If it does, remove the metal handle clip and pay close attention to the number that the burr is set at so you can go back if needed. Adjust to a lower number for finer, but do it incrementally.
Let me know if this helped.

Rick

I say that it could be one of the following reasons:
I tightened the nut too much (with a tool)
maybe because of cleaning the up and bottom burr with water
is it normal since it was recently cleaned
what do you advise me? I'm worried.
@bluxen16 hi there...try to loosen the nut and only tighten finger tight. It does not need to be torqued on. Cleaning with water as I did won't harm the burrs, but make sure they're dry before re-installing.
There is nothing requiring oiling, and it will only clog things up.
Take it all apart, put back together, but don't over tighten the nut. Let me know how that works for you.

@@GroundsForDivorceCoffee I was waiting for your quick response but TH-cam didn't notify me. so, in the end I did what you mentioned, I screwed the nut with my hands, I put everything dry and clean, and it still has that loud sound. I'm already used to it, but I do miss the normal sound of the machine. thanks for answering
So Informative and help full. Thankyou

Hi There, any idea on what to do when the top burr doesn't want to release? Its so tight i feel like I'm going to break the wire handle
Hi Paul, this is a very good question. My best advice is to dial down the grind setting to the coarse grind. That should release the upward pressure on the bottom bur onto the too bur and allow you to turn and remove the top bur. I hope this helps, please let us know if it did. @@GroundsForDivorceCoffee Hi Rick, thanks. Yeah I had it on the coarsest setting already. Happy to report it eventually let go, just prior to my fingers and/or the metal D clip breaking! All good now and no more awful noise 🙂
@@paulacklam1172 hi Paul, I'm glad it became unstuck but sorry the clip broke. There must've been a really hard bit of coffee bean wedged in at just the right angle to jam it. Thank you for letting me know and I hope you have a great day! 😎👍☕️
Just wondering I have the earlier model of this machine and it doesn’t appear to have the nut to remove but I can’t figure out how to get the burr out? Any tips would be most appreciated
Hi Dean Family, unfortunately I am not familiar with older models. I would suggest calling Breville for a starting place if you cannot find anything on TH-cam by searching your make/model. Sorry I don't have better info for you. Please let me know what you find out! Cheers, Rick & Paula :)
you said you used a vacuum cleaner. Did you use a regular household vacuum cleaner or a special one?
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, I simply use our normal household vacuum to extract the grinds and the fan. The orifice of the vacuum is the perfect size and does a great job. Since I wipe everything down once apart, there is no concern about germs, etc.
Let us know how it works for you! If you haven't already subscribed to our channel, we would really appreciate your support by doing so now.

I'm having trouble opening the top burr. Mine is jammed .. I tried to push all the left over coffee beans and brush off the residue but it just wouldn't unlock , any ideas ?
Thank you
Nvm I was able to get it out . I've got small hands ..needed an extra pull to unlock it hahah 😅
Let me know if this helps and if it doesn't, I'll see what else can be done.

What size is the nut? Standard or metric?
Hey there BobaFett2243, thank you for watching and commenting. The nut for the bottom burr grinder is 10mm. You may need a socket for the initial removal, but when putting it back on, only tighten it finger tight. You don't want to torque it on tight. Also, remember that it is a Left Hand Thread (reverse thread). Turn it it to the right to loosen and turn it to the left to tighten.
Hope this helped you out. Please subscribe to our channel. We need your help to grow!

Heya, my sage isnt grinding any beans and is making a really high pitched noise ! Not sure what's happened? Any ideas?
