Dig A Pony- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

- Thanks Eric Mason (and @wmvansise8797) for lending me the Rosewood Tele!
This cover is based on the full unedited version from the Rooftop Concert, before Phil Spector cut it down. You can hear it on the 2022 release: Get Back - The Rooftop Performance
Specifically, Phil Spector cut the 'All I Want is You's' at 0:19 and 3:42
And cut John's guitar mistake at 3:30
Dig A Pony was recorded live on Jan 30th 1969. You can see the rooftop footage in the Let It Be and Get Back movies. The song begins with a false start because Ringo was smoking a cigarette and shouts 'hold it!' 0:02
John Lennon played his Epiphone Casino, and George played his Fender Rosewood Telecaster. They were both plugged into Fender Twin Reverb amps. George's guitar solo is my favorite Beatles solo, I love the energy of this whole performance
Let's talk about the guitar tone on the recording. Their Twin Reverbs were rated at 100 watts, making them very clean and loud and difficult to distort. This has puzzled Beatles gear nerds for years, and I don't have an answer as to why the tones are so crunchy. One explanation was that they had to play much louder on the rooftop outdoors, driving the Twin's preamps. Another theory is that their amps were early UK imported prototypes of the Silverface line of Fender amps, which had a different circuit
I'm achieving this crunch by using boost pedals into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb, a very similar amp to their Twin Reverbs. I'm plugged into the vibrato channel, set clean on volume 3
John used the bridge pickup of his Casino, but rolled the tone knob down almost all the way
For my cover I also am on the bridge pickup. My volume knob is on 9.5 and my tone knob at 1
I'm using an Analogman Bad Bob boost pedal into a Klon KTR
George used the middle position of his Telecaster. He is seen turning up the volume and tone knobs at various points of this song (see timestamps below)
For George's Tele, I'm using my Analogman King of Tone (boost side) into the Bad Bob Boost
Interesting notes:
0:02 George plays the false start Low G note, but John does not
0:44 George is seen turning up his vol knob
0:54 Check out this scene in Let it Be- George kneels below John, and John reacts by turning his Casino up and away. He pauses strumming briefly
1:13 George is seen turning up his tone knob
1:29 George switches to fingerpicking, hiding his pick between his index and middle finger
1:39 George switches back to a pick, and turns up his tone knob again
1:43 George moves his left hand up the neck, but doesn't play much
2:09 Before the solo, George turns up his tone knob
2:13 For the beginning of the solo, George uses his thumb instead of pick
2:19 George switches to a pick, while John plays a cool double stop
3:27 George messes with tone knob, while John accidentally plays riff too early

Thank you for the demonstration of George's leads, fills, and solo. The Let It Be film does not show enough of his playing in the Rooftop session. He was a subtle and creative guitarist and obviously knew his way around the instrument. John really did drive the band with his rhythm guitar.
The nuances of George’s guitar work are quite superb.
It's absolutely amazing that you even replicate the false start and the noodling at the end
Those George fills are SO tasty.😎
3:30 John starts too early. On the rooftop footage you can see him make a face at that moment.
Sticks his tongue out lol
This made me appreciate Ringo a whole lot more
Sam always captures the little nuances and even errors which makes it more authentic. John had a lot of boo boos in the rooftop show.
Right? He even de-tuned John's guitar a little bit compared to George's guitar!
I've seen George Harrison in concert in 1974 , now it's like I'm back then! 👏
So perfect. What a service you provide here in addition to entertaining us - I remember watching a grainy vhs of LiB as a teen, trying to suss out the parts, getting some but not others, and with only a very amateur ear, and if this video existed then, 14 year old me would have been in Valhalla. As it is, 47 year old me is diggin this pony big time!
Yes! You did the little thing John did at 3:30. Spectacular video
How the hell did you comment three weeks ago?!!

@@perfectpiano1871 yeah what the hell??
Are you a time traveler or something?
@@perfectpiano1871he discovered a secret on my channel 😁
god the rosewood telecaster is straight up sexy
Yeah
@@sharp_object it ALWAYS catches my eye. And I guess George soon after gave it away. 🤷♂️
Dude, that Rosewood Tele is sweet! Always appreciate the authenticity and frequency of your covers. Cheers!
My god...those back and forth triplet double stops at 2:50 took me a hot minute to wrap my head around.
This is the definition of "excellence".
This performance was one of my favourite bits of Get Back. Seeing them enjoy the performance, John messing around, and georges solo nearly brought tears to my eyes. I can't explain why
Same here. And my wife walked in on me watching and sobbing and though something was was wrong. I can't really explain it either. Guess it just touches something deep inside.
"The Beatles are mediocre musicians..? Are George or John good guitarists?" Oh, come on, people. Look at this!!
Literally no one says this. You're arguing against people who don't exist.
@@harold3165 i guess you just havent seem them people yet. trust me, youd be surprised just how many there are who thinks they were mediocre musicians
@@harold3165 false actually. Alot say they wasn't good at all. Even tho John played chords no one ever used
Who says George Harrison was a mediocre guitarist? Musicians respect Harrison's guitar playing on Beatles records
@@donjohn2695 there are loads of people who think the beatles were "mediocre" at guitar when it came to their technical abilities, isolated tracks on most their songs prove that claim false but still, its a surprisingly common thing that people think
Your attention to detail is absolutely fantastic! I don't think I've ever seen anything so true to the originals. Your channel is a treasure trove of content. I want to learn these masterpieces as accurately as possible, so I'll be spending a lot of time here.
One of my favorite songs
George and John merged almost as one great guitar player. They always played for the song as all the Beatles did. Love these two guitar parts!
Check out Mike pachelli he does a version also and breaks down all.guitqr parts and history of the song. It's pretty awesome
Thanks Sam! Well done…as usual. Really enjoy hearing and watching these guitar parts…from one Beatle nerd to another. Cheers!
Insane you even got john 0:54
Love the chord progression on this one
What's amazing is George was able to do those bends on heavy ass strings.
Hey Sam I Dig a Pony and yes I dig This cover as well. Great style and Tone. Please keep it up
What a great cover, if i wanted a a casino, I want one even more now😂
Is it a natural one or sunburst. If it is a sunburst, Do you plan to put a bigsby on like George's or Paul's?
One of my favourite solos and you always nail it! Good one Sam:)
this was the song that got me into the beatles, and its held so dear to my heart
Sweet! Amazing talent, thanks for sharing.
Great original tone on both your Casino and Tele...fantastic perfect replica of a great Beatles rooftop track. Your attention to detail is much appreciated especially when attempting to learn this on guitar..many thanks.😊
I was thinking yesterday if you already uploaded this oneeee perfecttt Sam, thanks 🙏
This is such a pleasure to watch and listen to.
Masterful performances!
Absolutely a pleasure to watch and hear.
Once again Sam INCREDIBLE job!!!
Grateful for all these covers man, been on a bit of a Stones phase but it's really helpful to have someone meticulously digging through the Beatles' catalogue.
This solo. 🤤❤
Very nice. As a new to guitar. Your videos help me learn beatles songs.
Great video…Keep em coming love his channel!
Excellent.
Incredible.
👏👏👏
Thank you for doing these covers these are great for learning the song cause you show the whole guitar!!
Spot on Sam, terrific... Even down to the wardrobe 😊
Wonderful!!! Thank you very much!!
You more than nailed it!
Top notch. Thank you.
Fantastic job!
I LOVE playing this on guitar so much, you’ve inspired me to play it again
Excellent
Bravissimo. Un Beatle👏👏👏
Super!! Very Nice!!
Awesome!
Excellent work, Sam.
I Dig This Song ❤
Incredible job!
We need a video showing your set ups and effects to see how you get the perfect tone!
I love how you even wore the outfits!
sweet playing and attention to detail, even down to John and George's clothing they wore on the rooftop performance!
You even got John's mistake! Excellent!
I love how you matched their outfits
Superb Sam, especially George’s part.😊🎸☮️👏
What is the fantastic cover this one ❤😊 have a wonderful day Sam
Great! Can you do get back next? I wanna see how you are gonna tackle that tone!
Hi Sam, you are simply one the best out there when it comes to musical reconstructions of this terrific band and I could think of no one better to come to to make a simple request. I've been listening to the Anthology and the new Revolver Remaster and the Alternate First Version of "And Your Bird Can Sing" has mesmerized me for the better part of a week. I could not seem to find any resources on that version anywhere online until I realized how amazing it'd be if you'd take a shot at reconstructing it. Again, I don't know if you take kindly to song requests or not but it'd be simply marvelous if you could try to recreate that.
Thanks so much. I love that version, I’ll definitely give it a go!
Ah, it was a cig. Someone (MacDonald?) said Ringo had to blow his nose! The rooftop tunes really showcase how tasteful and sensitive to dynamics George's playing was. Awesome job! It was impressive how nimble their playing was considering the temperature and wind.
Why have only just found your site..! Hard subbed.
The best, I personally much prefer this song with the ‘All I Want Is You’s’. Your tones always sound amazing Sam well done 👏🏻
Top demais 👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing as always Sam :)
No wonder they chose George when he auditioned in the bus. He was great at adding small parts that did so much for the song.
Great job on George’s part Sam.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
WOOOOOOOOO
Well that was perfect. I caught the clothing you are wearing also. Nice touch.
I love the attention to detail. John had a false start to the last riff that he and George did together. Or maybe that was on purpose, it's genius
Yeah that was just John making a mistake there. You can see in Get Back he makes a face
what a great channel matey I can play them properly now. Ta tony Leics uk
Please keep doing the stuff you're doing...it's an unbelievable joy to see how you play the guitar parts of John and George....P.S. do you know where I can get any of the suede Beatle boots rubber sole era?... Thanks keep up the great work!
Thanks! I’d check modshoes.uk
I’m just in love with the “growl” that John’s Casino had on the roof; no effects, just the Fender amp?
Yes just guitar into amp (for Lennon). See my description for my signal chain
Why is this video only visible from your covers playlist?
I’m waiting to release it. You’ve found out my secret stash
that's so cool!
Congratulations, you're the shit!!!
nice job sam! sorry for late comment since my dad took away my phone at the time this video relased
Beautiful!
I was lazy and my tuner was 3 flights up...I used this to tune my Casino and play along :) Thanks for reacquainting me with it after a few months of neglecing to play it!
LOS DIÁLOGOS DE LAS GUITARRAS DE GEORGE HARRISON Y DE JOHN LENNON😊😊
You are very good brother, where do you get the tablatures?
Learned purely by ear. Sorry I don’t have tabs
I just have a question, why did Phil Spector cut out the “All I Want is” part when the song was released on the Let It Be album in 1970?
Not sure. I kind of like it
@@sampopkinOh Ok.
I'm currently working on this piece but it's been so long since I last touched a guitar that it's not going as well as you! In any case it's great to have your video to see how George played it! Besides, I think you play it better than him!
😂
Do you know how to fix an Epiphone input jack falling inside the guitar? Thanks
That's a pain, I'm sorry. If you're epiphone has f holes, you could try to wiggle it back towards the input jack hole. If not, try tweezers maybe. But don't damage the guitar
@@sampopkin Yeah I’ve tried that but it doesn’t work unfortunately. It’s a natural Epiphone casino with no pickguard I kinda modded like johns. Any other suggestions?
Not sure, I would google it
@@sampopkin Ok thanks
The Beatles were great, Sam Popkin is great
Is it possible that the amps weren’t running at the correct voltage causing lower output?
Yes
where did you bought that fender rosewood telecaster?
Borrowing it from a friend
Insanely good. How many takes do you covers usually take?
Depends but I do a lot. For these about 25-30 to perfect it
For Helter Skelter bass it was like 88 lol
@@sampopkin Woww thats impressive, do you ever get anoyed? I'm trying some covers with a friend of mine lately but recording really anoys the hell out of me sometimes hahaha
@@milan5079 oh god yes. My GoPro camera dies after about 30 mins or so and that’s usually right when I get a good take. Sometimes it dies mid-take when I’ve perfected it and I get so mad
@@sampopkin Oh wow that sucks damn. Do you think the beatles took so many takes too?
@@milan5079 yeah they did. Some songs only had 6-7 takes. But later on they did Maxwell’s silver hammer like 107 times lol
Argggg long life
How do you like the tele?
It was borrowed and a Japanese fender reissue. It was nice but I much prefer my 52 reissue. The rosewood felt plasticky
衣装合わせたんだね❗👍
the funny thing is that in the upper section video, he's wearing green trousers and in the lower section he's wearing a brown fur coat. Just like Harrison & Lennon in the movie👍😂😂😂
Apparently John disliked this song of his, but I think it’s great, and I think most ppl agree.
George's fills remind me of the Hawaiian music
This is not George and John playing.
Hold the phone
Is this for Rainbow Dash? Sorry, wrong pony!
Not a single episode of the show was called 'Dig A Pony' such a shame :p
I'm glad the naked version of the album exists, Spector ruined the original album for me.
John's mistake at the end...
