I Want You (She's So Heavy)- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

- I Want You was the first song recorded for the Abbey Road album on February 22nd, 1969. The backing track was recorded at Trident Studios in London. The Beatles taped 35 takes, and then made a composite from takes 9, 20 and 32
John Lennon played lead guitar on his Epiphone Casino, into a Fender Twin Reverb amp. George Harrison played rhythm guitar on his Gibson 'Lucy' Les Paul, also into a Twin Reverb but making use of an Arbiter Fuzz Face pedal
I was able to revive some hidden guitar parts by isolating Ringo's drum track, which revealed John and George's backing guitars that were later taped over (outro only). Many overdubs were recorded, mostly at the beginning and end of the song. It can get a bit confusing, because there are 8-10 guitars total on the song. So I'll break it down as best I can:
Intro: 5 guitars total
0:00
John's backing track guitar is one of the arpeggio Casinos
George's backing track guitar is doing leads (bottom left on the grid)
1 John arpeggio Casino overdub
2 George lead guitar overdubs (top left and right on the grid)
Main Section: 2 guitars total
0:14
John's backing track guitar
George's backing track guitar
Outro: 8 guitars
4:38
John's backing track guitar (deleted, heard in background of Ringo's iso drums)
George's backing track guitar (deleted, heard in Ringo iso drums- includes a hidden guitar solo)
4 guitars in Drop D tuning- 2 George, 2 John playing same notes
2 John arpeggio Casino guitars- both overdubs
I'm using my 2021 Epiphone USA Casino into an Analogman King of Tone boost pedal, into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb. Like John, I'm keeping the bridge pickup knobs on full, then turning down my neck pickup tone knob down (to 3-4)
For George, I'm using my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard into an Analogman Sunface BC108 (Fuzz Face clone), into the 1974 Fender Pro Reverb. George kept both his volume knobs down, with the fuzz face on the whole time. This was a trick that Jimi Hendrix used with his fuzz faces- turning down the volume knobs with the pedal on cleans up the signal, picking harder or turning the knobs up produces more distortion. My Les Paul knob settings:
Neck Vol: 4.6
Bridge Vol: 4.6
Tone Knobs on 10
MY GEAR:
2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard (OX4 Low-Wind PAF pickups)
2021 Epiphone USA Casino Royal Tan
Analogman King of Tone
Analogman Sunface BC-108
1974 Fender Pro Reverb
Neumann TLM-103

One of John’s best songs, and it has less words in total than the shortest song on the album. You did the song justice, Sam. I applaud you 👏👏
actually, the solo closes before the 8 min. mark
@@Belchmaster41??
Fewer words.
That secret solo blew me away. That is the most George in minor thing I've ever heard.
Extremely George! So cool.
So bluesy and cool. The interplay between John and George on this song is fantastic. It has a real stoner rock groove.
and if you watch another cover, you'll see that this track opens on an "open" D chord
EPIC! Beatle nerd key moment # 213 is the flip up of the pickup switch while holding the chord! Gotta have it!
This is the product of some insane audio forensics - congrats!
The one we've all been waiting for! Stunning job Sam!
I love that you're wearing denim for George and white for John...
Great job i DIG IT 😂
BLOCDY MARVELOUS! It’s really a dual lead guitar song and I bet GH cane up with that descending “DOOM” riff in the CODA. FANTASTIC !
I wanted this song so bad, it's so heavy... Thanks for doing it, it's perfect 😊
Great job, Sam. That riff so expressive of obsessional feelings that keep coming back relentlessly like a stuck record. No one beats Lennon's genius for expression in a song.
That hidden solo hit me so fkin hard, never heard of it. It was perfect
What a great birthday surprise! That hidden solo was pretty cool.
Happy birthday man!
It's exactly the sound I want!
Amazing sam!
Yes!!! Given your excellent attention to detail, I would’ve been shocked if you didn’t include the hidden solo. Thanks, Sam! 🎸
I didn't know that George and John both wore a wedding ring ;)
Once again: great job Sam !!
wow I just searched this up last night hoping for you to cover this then I check my feed today to see that you just uploaded this!
It was telekinesis
Casi 55 años despues y recién me entero que había un solo de guitarra "descartado". Me acabas de volar la cabeza y no dejas de sorprendernos a nosotros, los fans de los Beatles. ❤❤❤
So great that you put the hidden parts as well.
The GOAT strikes again. One of the greatest songs I've ever heard, and your cover blew me away
sounds totally great.. congrats! the change of pickups is so important for the song and makes a big different on lennon's epiphone
I love the constant layering of these chords
The incredible attention to all the details. Simply amazing as always! Thank You for the hidden solo as well, Sam!
I think Lennon and Harrison really blended well together in their latter years on guitar. And I imagine Harrison was upset about another solo of his being wiped out. He wasn't a happy guy with the Beatles and that just added to his discontent and seeing the royalties the others were getting for songwriting. Another fine job Sam 👏
one of my new favourite beatles covers now. i never knew about the deleted original track guitar unique parts. i always notice the amount of overdubbed guitar for the outro is different for each youtuber. matiboo used like 9 guitar overdubs for the outro. and nick dalwood had a great cover of this to but i forgot how many he had
It’s hard to say how many guitars were on it for sure. But you only really hear 2-4 of the drop D guitars when listening closely
You've captured that swampy feel the song has. Great job!
Quite possibly my favorite song from John and you knocked it out of the park!! Keep up all the great work you do on this channel!
This is the one we all have been waiting for! This is just amazing Sam!
Really amazing performance! 🎉
Love the deleted trucks!
You really teach, man!!
Super bravo!
Absolutely superb. Loved every moment of that. Thanks for all your hard work.
It is absolutely perfect! Thanks Sam!
Love the pick-guard removal, was wondering when that would happen!
I'd been waiting for you to do this one, Sam! It's one of my favorite songs on Abbey Road, and you definitely gave it the justice it deserved! Hope to see more Abbey Road covers!
Just perfect Sam!
An amazing performance for an amazing song!!😊😊
Absolutely amazing, this was exactly what I wanted your teaser to be for. Without a doubt one of my favourite songs, it's so powerful!
Legendary stuff Sam! Once again absolutely nailed the guitars! Definitely some of John and George’s greatest lead work! Really enjoyed John’s playing and was crazy seeing him play it while doing the lead vocals in the get back doco. Also really enjoyed hearing the hidden guitar parts, think I vaguely remember hearing George’s but Lennon’s was a surprise. Overall you’ve outdone yourself on this cover!
Incredible! Knocked it out of the park yet again Sam
I've noticed just now that you removed the pickguard of the Casino.
Also good job! Kind of a big request to cover this song and to have this uploaded is brilliant
This is the most brilliant Beatles video about John and George playing guitars.
Love it!
My fav song from Abbey Road album.
Thanks for sharing mate!
It took me a while to realize the abbey road cosplay going on 🤣. great as ever
Love it, well done - I don't usually praise Beatle covers, but you did a great job. :)
Been waiting for this one for a while. Incredible job sam!
I just listened to this song yesterday and when I searched for the guitar playing of the song you uploaded this clip the next day which is awesome.
This guitar work is like a conversation! Great stuff!
Good job 🎉
Abbey Road was my 1st Beatles album when I was 12 years old 😮
Really good, you nailed it again Sam as you always do.
Wow John was the lead they both killed it on this song. The best of John period
They should have kept that hidden track in it's crazy. I LOVE this song so much
Well done Sam that was fabulous thank you 🏴
One of my favs by the boys ..great job Sam!
I love that you added the solo
Nicely done! The tone, the expression...great!
Wow. Congratulations. Astonishing work.
Beautiful job on the tones! Dead on! Have to love Harrisons sound going evil cheery. Johns pretty much sounds like a poor man BB King with johns arrpegiations. Love the new technology digging out the hidden guitars. Kinda like the guitar wall of sound more then the released version.. nice job as all my man ✌ 👍
This is actually incredible to practice the bass line, just as I am learning this beast of a song you release this video, thanks! ❤
The end to this song is the best. Keep it on forever
Great, great tone! Beautiful!
Absolutely incredible, what an amazing song and an amazing cover !
Wow! Fab Sam absolutely Fab! Getting better all the time ….. Again THANX for your passion doing this!
Superb. Thanks, Sam.
beautiful as always sam!
I was so dumb that it took me as long as it did to figure out that they tuned E down to D for the "monster" riff.
I thank the algorithm gawds for bringing me here. Outstanding work sir!
ohh unreal tone sam!
haha the abrupt ending, i forgot about that part 😅
great cover! soon you'll have the full album lol
AGAIN, GREEEAAAT JOB, SAM!!!!!
Amazing, Once again!
nice job sam! one of my all time favs
Waooo congratulations Sam, one of my favorite Beatles songs, excellent work and George's hidden solo is impressive, greetings from Guadalajara Jalisco México, by the way George's Gibson Les Paul (Lucy) was recovered here in GDL from a Mexican musician He bought it in L.A. in a musical instrument store.
I just read about that guitar story in the new Mal Evans book. Apparently there were even talks of a murder plot to scare the guy who bought Lucy unknowingly. I love Mexico btw ✌🏻
I can't wait to hear with headphones
1:40 dude, I went to check the original and you even nailed the pickup change on the Casino!!
Great great great!!!
Excelente trabajo bro.
John does such a nice bluesy lead on this song
Beautiful les paul!
woah! it sounds perfect!
Stunning 🤩
Fantastic job.
Just this one track must have influenced the sound of many future bands.
Arpeggiation nation!
Thank you so much 😁!
P.S. still awaiting Please Please Me cover from you 😊!
Sexy!!! I wish they would’ve kept the hidden guitar tracks in the final mix, it feels like “heavy” and just eerie like you’re in a final boss fight
Plus that guitar arpeggio at 5:53 gives me shivers down my spine. Fab work
Wow, it’s amazing !
Really cool!.. You really did well the fills and licks done by Harisson.. I noticed on the original recording more than likely John's guitar did a short feedback prior to starting the solo.. I know one of the many reasons they liked the Casino it's that it could be played and heard without an amp and also you could voluntarily do some feedback..
Bought some new speakers (again) this was the second song I ended up playing - good grief blew my mind such a dirty sexy string sound!
You’re saying I broke them in? :)
@@sampopkin Indeed! Bought some Tanoy Gold 7 for my desktop and holy wow.
Gotta keep my gear game up with the pro!
@@sampopkin I predict a long night on your channel :)
@@siflex I Can’t how imagine how good that must sound. (Not my videos but your speakers) lol
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful day Sam ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
The outro section riff actually starts with only one guitar(with low-end) on the left channel. Then with the descending line (C, B, Bb) comes the second guitar(with high-end) on the right channel.
Huh that must be a different mix than I had
@@sampopkin hey Sam. It’s actually the same case in both 2009 remaster and the 2019 mix. Here’s an isolated version.
th-cam.com/video/SARi5jAx15I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=OICg_a7BrcR2MWfZ
Just beautiful - thank you!
I really love the interplay of the guitars on this track! Great job.
I was wondering if you would ever want to do a CCR cover? I’m sure you would knock it out if the park!
Yeah I love ccr
Thank you Sam
Muy bién!!..excelente!!..gracias por el video!
Cheers, dude!
Love that original deleted section. Wish they kept it
Wow, i didn’t know about the hidden tracks
Bravo! Bravíssimo!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Song was 50 years ahead of its time
Oh that's awesome 👌
Impressive 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Incredible effort Sam, I love your attention to detail! I don't think anyone could play it better than this, in fact, are you a time traveler Sam? Did you actually record this one for The Beatles? 😂
Excellent Job 👏
Thanks, Paul! Not many people know this but I did this video in 1966 and the Beatles nicked it 🥺
@@sampopkin 🤣 I knew it!
Arguably the first doom metal song in existence 👍
Excellent, thank you 👍
