Here's a lesson on the guitar parts of John Lennon & George Harrison that they played during their rooftop concert at Apple Corps. on January 30, 1969.
John was very fond of the A chord with a D added…..he also uses it in I’ve Got A Feeling…..he even says in the documentary “I’m always using this riff lately.”
Coolest song on the roof. Any other band-with #1 hit songs, as well as the freaking White Album released just a few months before-would’ve simply performed those hit songs they had just done. But not the Beatles…instead they gathered Jan 2 and created all new music, under pressure, toward an as yet unsettled performance! And Why? Because they were ARTISTS and not just pop/rock musicians.
Even though we had the album back in 1970, I had forgotten about this song until the Get Back doc. I was surprised how good it is, & how much it grooves. Great song...great choice Mike!
Amazing how George was able to play those clever and articulate licks in his solo, with his hands basically freezing!!! Shows you that when the money is on the line, George delivers as well as do the other of course!! God Bless thanks for this video!! I'm a pianist and now how hard it is to play with hands cold, and guitar it has to be the same!!

I had heard that one of the reasons that John wouldn't "own" some of the words had to do with the line "I roll a stoney" referring not so subtly to The Rolling Stones. The line that follows - "You can imitate anyone you know..." Of course we know that John, when he was feeling mean, said in an interview that the Stones copied everything The Beatles ever did. As the bands were actually friends, putting this down in a song can end up being a bit awkward when next you see Mick, or Keef, (AWESOME AUTOBIO btw!) Charlie or Bill. For this reason he distanced himself from the lyrics. Privately? I've got to believe, after all the work they put into it, he was damn proud of it. - Maybe he was just sick of it... LOL! In any case I love this song and I always will, and you did an AMAZING job on it. - Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your fam! [OH! One more thing!! I work around the corner from The Dakota (at abc tv on 66th street) and I pass it on occasion when I drive to work. as a way of thanking you for all the work you put into these vids, I did a shout for you - "Mike Pachelli sends hi love and says hi!" Knew you wouldn't mind.]
Great job on this one Mike. I love these Lennon Guitar riff style songs the most of all Beatles recordings. This was one of the last he wrote before the breakup in that style. You do a great job in recreating it. I actually haven't tried to play this one in years .However today I will . Thanks again. Id like to request a lesson on " I call your Name " . Probably my favourite of the Let It Be sessions (maybe along with Get Back). I only play one of those double stop fills each time. No excuse now not to learn some variations! So glad they let you out of prison for the day to make this Mike

Great lesson Mike. What strikes me about this song ( and Yer Blues, and She's so heavy) is Lennon is trying to sound contemporary with Clapton and Hendrix. This is a long way from If I fell or I should have known better. I got burnt out from Sgt. Pepper on, and I enjoy analyzing the early stuff, as I suspect you do since you are just now getting to Get Back
Amazing Mike how close you get here to Johns unique singing style. Your drums don’t sound as muffled as Ringos and I think I actually prefer it! Maybe he overdone the tea towels on the recording! Great analysis and please keep them coming.
John - Thanks! That's very kind of you to say. And yeah - recording equipment has come a long way since 1969 so it's possible to get any sort of sound one would like. I chose not to tea towel the snare and floor tom 'cuz I wanted the drums to ring out more to add to the raucousness of the performance.
That is the best explaination of the main riff. I own a tab book and it's most definitely not as staight forward as your presentation. Kudos for finding the correct way to play it.

Running out of Beatles songs was inevitable, Mike. How about Dear Prudence? It's not a rocker, but it has an endearing/enduring appeal, and is a slower tempo some of us older guys might appreciate.
The A over D chord I really struggled with that I’ll persist but just used the A then to D it sounded ok but it was a bit of a stretch for me Great lesson as usual it’s a great journey I mean I look back at previous lessons you posted I thought no way too hard but I went back and was able to do it Thanks Mike 🏴
Thanks to George Harrison for bringing in the wonderful / cool Billy Preston to get through this final Beatles period. Without him, they probably wouldn’t have finished. Billy’s playing is subtle here, but very effective and without his part, the song would have sound thin! Billy’s presence made them all play and get along better.

Something amazing about their performance of this song on the rooftop is almost micro tempo changes and they all moved together with it. It’s barely transcribable. Their hive mind as a live band.

Great job Mike....... I see you have your brown box in action....... I recently got one and it works great with my 1965 Vox Pacemaker..... Also makes my '94 Matchless Tornado sound better at 115 volts, even though it says 120 volts on the back of it..... less harsh sounding with single coils to my ear at 115 volts....... Bought the Matchless at Thorougbred Music back in '94... always thought it sounded a little harsh ( my word... ha ha) with single coils, but now have the answer...... what will they think of next for us guitar players to buy.... ha ha But I really see how this thing helps no joke......
