Some clarification for anyone worried about UV lights: This was not caused by standard stage lighting. The bored ape event in Hong Kong was using non-coated mercury vapor lamps, a special type of light only used in industrial and scientific equipment. Regular 'Black Light' fixtures use a mercury vapor tube that comes from the factory with a coating that only passes deep blue and near ultraviolet light, which is safe to view. Bare mercury vapor lamps emit a small amount of visible cyan glow and a large amount of deep ultraviolet, which is invisible to the eye but very harmful to tissue. I do not have any information about the production of this event, but I doubt that they were supplied by a reputable production company. In my experience as a lighting and laser tech in the US, it would be nearly impossible for this to happen at a professional production here. I don't have any experience in Hong Kong, but industry standards there appear very different.

Having sunglasses at clubs/venues that go berserk with stupid lights is actually a really good tip I can give y'all as a raver. I've been to clubs where people ask me "why are you wearing sunglasses" so I'd lie about being intoxicated just so I don't have to explain them while yelling how I don't appreciate getting randomly flashbanged by an underpaid light technician.
Given the wavelength of light used here, sunglasses wouldn't do much if anything at all. There aren't universal glasses for lasers either, you need specific ones for specific colour's / wavelengths and there aren't any universal glasses to protect against lasers.
As a welder, if it is uv light the damage could be long lasting. We will get eye burns if someone arcs off when you're not ready. Often times won't feel it till the next day but most the time feels like you have sand in your eyes all day. I've seen cases though where the eyes are really bloodshot and constantly tearing up. Depending on how strong the light was and how long you were there it could definitely have long term vision affects
As a blind man I feel bad for these people that shit had to be horrifying for them. People don't ever think about their eyes so when you get a sight scare that shit must be horrible. (To avoid further confusion I have septo-optic dysplasia I can still see weakly out of my left eye)
UV damage could very, very easily be permanent. No one likes nft-bros, but I wouldn't wish vision loss/blindnesss and severly increased risk of cancer. Its like they put up mini suns as lights like....
so, as far as I understand, the issues people are having are a result of exposure to UV-C lamps, someone bought the germicidal kind of ultraviolet light, not the fun kind, but these kinds of lamps tend to have one really strong spike in the uv-c and relatively low emission of longer wavelength light, UV-C is high energy, but because of its short wavelength it’s really bad at penetrating more than a millimeter or two into the skin, you might get a mild sunburn, but you probably won’t meaningfully increase your risk of cancer or cataracts or anything. it still sucks though.
@lettersnstuff still, prolonged exposure, say a few hours. But interesting I had heard alot pop up abour products with uv-c but I aint exposing my eyes to that shit, thats almost like looking intl the sun, almost. Makes you wonder how this ever got approved or checked
One reason why office workers may be at higher risk for developing malignant melanoma is their exposure to UVA wavelengths filtered through office windows. Lack of Vitamin D production from lack of sun exposure. Full spectrum sunlight exposure is necessary and beneficial. Yes, excessive UVA from sunlight is bad, but reasonable amount of UVA actually helps the body produce nitric oxide, which is a good thing by helping your arteries to relax and help normalize your blood pressure.
I am truly sorry for everyone affected by this and I pray they will recover 100%. The idea of going somewhere to have fun and enjoy yourself and lose your eyesight as a result is sickening.
They used UVC STERILIZATION lamps. These things are meant to kill pretty much all life on contact and do in fact, produce the worst wavelengths of UV. Note that these lights are a very attractive light blue color.
@@MrPaxio If this is trying to sound smart to you, I'd hate to see what you're like in normal conversation. You know any words 6 letters or longer, by any chance?
I went into this video thinking the situation could be some kind of unfortunate coincidence, or a mass psychogenic illness. But ultraviolet radiation is nothing to mess around with, and if the Apefest crew did use unprotected UV lighting, that's negligent as hell, and they should be sued. I hope the victims make a full recovery. Losing your eyesight is frightening. EDIT: I just wanted to share a quote from a Fortune article about this incident. If what Fortune is claiming here is true... this is one of the worst fuckups of 2023. Jesus Christ. "Instead of using harmless black fluorescent lighting for effect, organizers appear to have used germicidal disinfectant lamps, either by mistake or through negligence. These produce a form of UV light strong enough to kill organic matter at a cellular level and are commonly used in the food and beverage industry as a chemical-free method of sterilization. Their high-power bulbs likely burned the corneal epithelium, causing the pain."
Woah, holy shit. If that's really what happened, that's insane. Most of the reputable germ-killing UV lights come in enclosed devices - both because the enclosure helps the effectiveness, and because you're not supposed to look at the light for this very reason.
I know the situation sound silly, but for people with pre-existing eye conditions its scary as hell. I have a rare eye disease called Coats Disease, where the blood vessels in the back of the eye leak causing fluid build up that can detach the retina and permanently damage your eyesight. I had to go to Miami 3 times for laser eye surgery, if I had gone to that event (just as a hypothetical, I hate nfts) I fully believe that could have reopened my eye damage and made me have to remove my eye. Thats scary.
5:23 gonna have to side with red boi here. Wearing sunglasses at raves while intoxicated is a pro strat. Especially when you’re on psychedelics. Genuinely so much better to slightly filter out the intensity and brightness of it all, rather than getting blasted with the lights all the time.
Once had a very mild case of this. Everything was green and blurry but not to the point of blindness. My lips were so burnt I couldn’t even speak so I can’t imagine the pain they’re in. It usually takes weeks to heal so they should get income restitution at the very least!
I heard speculation that these weren't regular UV lights like for like growing plants either these were the type specifically made for sterilizing germs, so if that's true that means those lights were legitimately made to kill some things.
Apparently it was UVC. Legit, the kind of light they use to sterilize lab equipment. The kind of shit with mandatory "DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE LIGHT, JACKASS" warnings plastered directly on the device.
I hear they used UV-C lights, which aren’t cheap either. As in, they’d be significantly more expensive than standard stage UV lighting. Apparently they spent more money just to vaporize peoples eyeballs. I can’t imagine the motivation behind this if true other than spies infiltrating the nft community just to slander it from within. Or incompetence.
one of the top comments is some guy whose a literal lighting and laser lights, technician; and his assumption is basically exactly what you’re assuming too. they (allegedly) were the same power of uv light that’s used for sterilizing entire rooms and large areas.
the funniest part is that the nft bros will most likely NOT sue because theres a high chance that they could win that lawsuit and if they do, it will affect the image of NFTs and further hurt they abysmal value

BigClive did a great video on this issue. The offending germicidal UV lamps, only occupied a small area of the event. Those lamps, when new, aren't that cheap. Probably someone's cousin did the decor, with used lamps pulled from some hospital, undergoing construction.
As someone who has developed an eye disease and saw one of my eyes go downhill for about a year I feel really terrible for these people. I’m not even blind in that eye but it still sucks. My prayers go out to the people affected.
I’m sure the event goers were blindsided. They never saw this coming! It has to burn knowing that this was preventable. Eye think that the event organizers really dropped the eyeball on this one. I’m in tears! Even if nfts are very cornea, it’s not an excuse to be lazy. I hope all affected can see the bright side to this, and I hope everyone lens a hand to one another. This must be very sclery to experience, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for situations like this in the future
I'm glad someone finally made fun of the NFTs bros without forgetting that they are not responsible for being torched by UVs and are still victims of a criminal negligence from someone else.
I don't want to victim blame, but how many times do you let someone dip their hand in the piranha tank before you just remove their ability to continue hurting themselves?
@KeithPickeringGuy I'm gonna be honest, starting a sentence with "I don't want to victim blame", just to go on and immediately victim blame is wild. There's an obvious difference between the financial irresponsibility of buying NFTs and being fucking blinded.
Holy shit, when I saw "eye-related issues" I assumed it was an outbreak of pink-eye...this is genuinely horrific! Who the hell does this?! This isn't "haha funny monkey people be stupid" this is genuine negligence and how it happened should be investigated!
"They probably already forgave them" Yes, because to do anything else would be FUD, so I wouldn't be surprised if they started stifling any discussion of this mistake. Only positive discussion of the event will be allowed. Hell they'll probably start saying this was all a conspiracy.
From everything I’m reading it isn’t even just unshielded UV lights. They used like medical grade germicide UV bulbs (I think it’s called UV-C) which are like turbo charged UV lights made to fry germs
Holy-moly! You can see on the video of the stage that they used some brutally powerful blacklight! Normally you shouldn't be able to see it, but you can clearly see the beams! I read somewhere that the organizers wanted to be extra fancy and didn't use normal UV lamps made for stages and such, but super expensive industrial grade lamps. The ones used for sterilizing stuff. Tricky stuff 'cause it is invisible but causes the same kind of eye damage as any powerful light source.
Blue lasers with a bad diode can end up emitting very dangerous spectra of light and the scariest part is you wouldnt even know it until long after exposure. This is why they reccomend not to cheap out on laser pointers and the like, let alone lighting for a public event.
But in this case, they literally used UV-C germicidal lamps because they have the prettiest blue... serious. This is also twice this has happened in Hong Kong
I mean the eye damage is only a small part of the problem. Long term exposure to unfiltered UV light is linked to skin cancer.... it's the reason you're told to wear sunscreen because while the atmosphere does protect you from some of the UV light it does not protect you from all of it. It's the reason why tanning beds are so dangerous. This was completely moronic and, in my opinion, criminally negligent but I highly doubt they will be held accountable or even liable.
These are honestly worse than tanning beds, these types of lights are used to sterilize environments. In which cases, they evacuate the room before using the lights because of the damage it can do. They're designed to kill things on a microscopic level.
Man… I already get clowned on for wearing hearing protection at concerts and big events, but now I hear enemies in video games much sooner than my friends. I guess I’m gonna have to be that douchebag that wear sunglasses inside as well 😔
@@ChrisCherchant concert earplugs are amazing, i can even hear my friends talking but everything is at a way more comfortable volume. I tried taking them out once during a heavy metal performance just to see the difference and I have no idea how people can listen to that at full volume!

This specifically happens with UV-C lighting, which is typically used in the food industry and HVAC industry because UV-C is has germicidal properties. TH-camr BigClive has a video about it if you want to learn more.
From other comments, it seems these lights are way more dangerous than was let on. I was originally worried this would cause a form of skin cancer to those that were in prolonged contact with those lights, now i’m fearing to may be so much worse.
My contact lenses have UV protection built into them. I never considered it might protect me at an event like this, although I trust any show I go to will take more care when choosing lighting than this one did
The light situation makes me think of a Doofenshmirtz level plan, from Phineas and Ferb. "You see Perry the Platypus, my eyesight has been really bad lately, so I made a convention where the lights will make everyone's eyesight worse than mine with the Blindinator 3000!" 🤣🤣🤣
This happened to my brother while fishing. He kept moving to where the fish are and he kept sitting in a direct reflection of the sun on the water. It wasn't near as bad as this but he couldn't keep his eyes open for more than a few minutes.
I’m horrified and on one hand feel awful for the people affected but at the same time my a**hole instincts are coming out and I kinda wanna say “if you not only buy an NFT but in November of 2023 are still GOING to events for them?? Maybe they should buy some critical thinking instead”
As a metal fabricator thats exposed to uv rays constantly. That shit HURTS. It cause blisters in your eyes and it feels like sand is getting rubbed into them. Scary part too is you dont know you got exposed till about 4 hours later
@EmyN yes I'll be ok thank you and it only last for a short while depending how long you got exposed for. As a fabricator you tend to know pretty quick when you get flashed so you can pull yourself away. But with these event goers cause it wasn't obvious and the constantly exposed themselves it made their symptoms much worse
There may be better jobs out there, and I say that as someone who sometimes delivers 600 pound saunas by myself. I'll take muscle pain over eye blisters.
i've had photokeratitis (welder's flash). the most painful thing i've experienced, worse than broken bones imo, though my case was pretty severe. feels like the insides of your eyelids are like sandpaper, any and all eye movements are horribly painful. i can point at myself and laugh about it, but really only have sympathy for others
I remember my boss describing it just like that when I started my apprenticeship and that the only way he could sleep was by getting so drunk he passed out lol. It definitely scared me into sticking to the H+S rules though because even after my 14 years of welding I’ve luckily never experienced it! 🤞🏼
I worked in a fireplace factory setting up parts for wire welders. The arc flash from 8 hours of exposure was incredibly painful and required about 2 hours a night with a wet cloth over the eyes.
In college, our welding instructor taught us all a lesson about welders flash by stepping out of the way after the speel as the other instructor struck an arc behind him. Afterwards we were issued our helmets. 1/10 would not recommend looking at the very pretty bluish-white light.
Charlie calling something Weenie Hut Jr is absolutely my favourite burn of all time. So simple and I imagine it cuts deeper than if he just outright called the thing dumb. 😂
A similar thing from a Big Clive video about fluorescent lamps: Someone thought they had bought a new cool looking clear variant of those harmless "blacklight" UVA fluorescent tubes that make certain things glow, but instead bought germicidal UVC-tubes (clear quartz-glass tube) and caused skin and eye problems to a bunch of people who reported smelling ozone at the hall. Normally fluorescent tubes are normal glass that won't even let that kind of UV through, with a fluorescent coating inside that converts the UV to visible light.
That's even worse. Those lamps are designed for disifection and surely works wonders against mold. That's also what welding emits as a byproduct. Pain kicks in after 6 hous (so typically in the middle of the night) and it makes the lens sore. Is the case you are talking about in Hong Kong? Because that's where such a thing happened.
@@Mi_Fa_Volare Just google bored ape eye damage. Yes it happened this weekend in Hong Kong, and yes, it has happened BEFORE in Hong Kong. They had an art exhibit that looked like a bathroom, with paint splatters all over it and at the top of the wall was tons of germicidal UV-C lamps wrapping around the area, you can tell these are UV-C lamps because the tubes have standing-wave patterns in them that are unique to UV-C tubes. This happened at a prior event, and several people have also tried to use UV-C bulbs as decorative lighting at home, which didn't go too well for them.

Dude I have LED grow lights for my fun plants and if you just look in it's direction you see spots for a minute! I couldn't imagine standing under it for more than a few seconds!
Apparently most of the lights there was LED lights but for some reason they decided to use clear mercury vapor fluorescent light that produce UV C in the toilet showplace(It is just two toilets and some other props) .The thing is that venue had this accident before and they literally decided to reuse the props despite knowing it had something wrong with them. This is blatant disregard of the human health rather than ignorance or a mistake. How expensive is to buy a proper normal flouracent light with uv filter could be? They should get sued.
I have a feeling the NFT bros aren't going after the organizers because deep down they know they are in deep shit and last thing they need is for the organizers to use what is left of their assets to fight the lawsuit
I imagine that losing that much money on a doomed investment would cause many of the attendees to go for a lawsuit in the hopes of making back a shred of what they lost.
Sometimes clubs will have DJs that aren't the main event/headline and they'll turn down the other sets to make the main guest sound like they are "really bringing the energy". Other times, they point the lights at the crowd. They are clearly blatantly unaware about lighting on accident
The dude with the sunglasses literally saved himself. He probably couldn't afford a rave mask, cuz he blew all his cash on apes, and thought: "Yeah... the sunglasses will be cool enough." Turns on, he was right.
Tragically, this isn't even the first time this has happened. BigClive has an explanation of these types of UV germicidal lamps in one of his older videos, and how they have previously been used with complete negligence at other events in the past.

@@lettersnstuffEvery sunburn you get increases your risk of cancer. It may not be by much, but it does.
Majority of melanoma cases are in people who have office jobs, not outdoor jobs.

I hope the victims make a full recovery. Losing your eyesight is frightening.

Holy shit, that really is a massive fuck up if it's true. Probably didn't have an actual professional managing the lighting, like Charlie said.
the ghost haunting Alec Baldwin has found himself a new medium...
There is NO WAY they bought those lights without knowing they were sterilizing UV lights. It’s awful.

Green because the visible light spectrum for humans is centered at 556 nm, actually interesting to hear that lol
The best part of this was them trying to minimize what they did.. "well, ya know. We didn't damage THAT MANY peoples eyes"
From everything I’m reading it isn’t even just unshielded UV lights. They used like medical grade germicide UV bulbs (I think it’s called UV-C) which are like turbo charged UV lights made to fry germs
good GOD! who the fuck thought any of this was a good idea?!
Well, at least they were clean by the end!
Surely there was a warning when they hired or bought them? There's no way they didn't
There's a video about how it also happens if you get them cold, makes them invisible too. Glad ANTIFA just had blue instead of shit like that.

@@allegorx58 what's the issue?
@@robertmoog3 i did get it wrong and it's green lasers that are dangerous at cold temperatures but idk about the rest.
@@caffeinatedpossum yeah I guess I didn't get that across correctly. This is completely unfiltered UV light, which even tanning beds don't do.

As someone who now has permanent tinnitus from the years I went to concerts without hearing protection: you're the smart one here. I'm happy earplugs are a lot more common sight now at concerts, at least around where I'm from.
Beyond UV-C?
My contact lenses have UV protection built into them. I never considered it might protect me at an event like this, although I trust any show I go to will take more care when choosing lighting than this one did
That's really useful, it might save your eyes.
