What I find the funniest about Jirard threatening to sue is that Karl won't actually have to worry about it for another 10 years until Jirard finds the right lawyer to do so. 😂
He didn’t forget, there’s no way you forget 600k in the bank. It’s super plausible he had the money in an account to get easier access to better financial offers.
They didnt forget, they were siphoning off funds from both charities and using the balance to qualify for financial instruments like loans that they wouldnt have access to if they didnt have a 600k account balance.
It’s not an apology video, it’s a response. He didn’t say the word sorry once and the title says it. I genuinely wonder if he thinks he’s done nothing wrong or if this is pure damage control because he only cares about his career. I don’t know which is worse.
My mom died of dementia. It was a decade-long nightmare for the whole family but especially her. How the hell you could go through that and then not try to help preventing it when you have the means to do so is perplexing as hell.
I think it's really cool that they all really went and put themselves in the shoes of someone with dementia and forgot to ever donate the money. Truly inspirational!
What hit me the hardest was The Completionist saying in his initial response how he has "JUST found out the money had never moved and how DISGUSTED he was when he found out" just to turn around and say a week later "ummm actually it was SUPPOSED to sit there the whole time guys that was the plan all along!" Like how dumb does he think we are?
@@marcosdheleno he's got some poor excuses of friends, but at least I can't fault projared. He had a huge controversy a while ago but he was innocent, and it feels like he's blindly trying to defend an old friend under the pretense he's in a similar situation. I feel bad for him, pbg, and the other normal boots guys for getting roped into this honestly.
Not to mention it was one of the charities that was already at the forefront. Like, it wasn't an obscure charity that they had never heard of that satisfied all of their needs, it was the AFTD, aka the most prominent charity directly related to the cause they were attempting to support.
@@DarkArmageddonyup, funny how years of investigation just instantly disappeared once they were exposed and immediately donated. The only silver lining is at least the organization did receive the donation vs other scams where people made off with the money.
The great thing about the response is that Karl is so used to people threatening lawsuits as a scare tactic that he sees Jirard’s threat as just another Saturday
It feels extremely insulting that Jerard would say so many times about how he raised money for dementia for his mother yet does this to his community. His mom must be rolling in her grave
I'm in the same boat as Charlie. I had a lot of respect for Jirard and normally I don't believe one mistake ruins that. Now what DOES get rid of that is not taking the L, constantly lying, bout it, and threatening. You can tell who a person is when they are backed into a corner. Shameful and disgusting.
Yea, it definitely looks worse as it goes on (especially with the bad response), but I still personally remain in the middle for several reasons. The money actually being donated is part of that. It's understandable that many people are absolutely dogpiling Jirard, but I have to stress that it's VERY important to remember that he is not the only one responsible for this outcome. Many people are painting it like he is which I find odd. It was mentioned in the call that Jirard was having some internal conflict with his family regarding the matter in the past couple of months and nobody knows the details of this, but it's safe to assume that this has a part in why there are inconsistencies between the call and the response as well as his statements after learning that the money was still there. Another thing; after the first set of videos, people deducted that he didn't have ill intent. At this moment and time, it still hasn't been proven that he did. Most of the videos after the first did not add much (if any at all) new information, yet people keep shifting what they think based on what they say. Karl goes from saying he never accused him of embezzlement to now saying he did when it's pretty obvious that when Jirard says "we don't touch any of it" and "it all goes to charity", it's referring to the fact that any form of support is going towards the main pool (which again, many people have said that it's completely reasonable to use those funds for administrative costs). Lack of clarification =/= ill intent through a perceived inconsistency. This was a very weak point so to see them fill the video with clip after clip after clip thinking they had their "gottem" moment, it doesn't come off right. The response wasn't great, but lets not pretend like the many people who curated it didn't consider this aspect. People have ALSO said that they don't doubt that they could pass a present-day audit so why is the argument still on missing money? Personally, it feels like a lot of goal-post shifting. The only thing they should be arguing at this point is the charity fraud gray area and if they did all of this only for "charity PR". Now, I don't know about you, but I highly doubt that the intention over the course of 10 years of raising money for a cause they have a personal stake in was for charity PR. Let it be known that letting the money sit there for that long is not good, but the accusations just went off the rails after that. The embezzlement claim especially is a huge red flag to me. Regardless of the details of the response; the truth is until someone can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they had other plans for the money besides charity, it is not fair to say that they are guilty to the degree that people are making it out to be. It's as simple as that really and we will see if anything in the coming weeks brings a definitive answer to this question.
@@FlameHricanesorry but one important aspect of that is wrong: "the money" wasn't donated, only the 600k. But a huge chunk of the money seems to be lost or off the books, or illegally spent. Like hundreds of thousands over the years are just missing.
@@Quintessence4444 dont forget the fact that he intentionally dodges every single tax year that both Mutahar and Karl mentions and he only mentions 2014 and 2023 tax filings which dont actually matter in the conversation... totally innocent maneuver /s
The worst and most damning evidence to me is the golf event money. He never addresses it and it is not ever reflected in any year's tax filing. It just goes missing.
He argues that it didn't make any money, but that excuse stinks to me. If it didn't make any money, then it would be fraud to have all these corporations on the banner, because it would mean that they're not actually affiliated with the charity anymore (if they ever were), and if those companies were legitimately affiliated with the event, then Jirard is just lying about it not making any money.
@@brofist1959 It doesn't really matter if it made any money they or not, they still need to declare how much money the event raised and how much money it cost to hold the event for tax reasons.
When Jirard was threatening and thiking of filing defamation lawsuits when people like Muta, and Karl rightfully calling out the mishandling of the funds is actually so disgusting.
I mean there was some people that really were just totally lying about the situation. Talking like they company had somehow pulled money and got a mansion or some crap. Which wasn't the case, is his response really oh yeah there is something going on.
What blew me away was the defense arguments that it was just negligence. I'm sorry, I have zero idea of how to set up a charity fund or fundraiser or what paperwork would go into it, but if I had a platform with which I'd be able to do so and decided to do so because of the death of my own mother, the single most important person in my world, I would have learned how to handle EVERYTHING a whole lot quicker then a fucking decade.
Even then, negligence doesnt tend to excuse things like this in the first place. Negligence when it comes to finances in this country tends to lead to legal issues or jail time
I agree with both of you. I'm saying that negligence is a terrible excuse for what he did, because in his shoes, I can't imagine it even being a possibility. The people saying it's a viable excuse are disgusting given the circumstances.
Yup incompetence is still punishable and not a "free out of jail" card . And his latest response video moved this from negligence , to sheer malice , with his attacks on those that shed light on the issue
It’s so precious for Jirard to say they were waiting to make a restricted donation because they didn’t want the money to cover operational costs for another charity, while using donations to cover indieland expenses.
THIS. why are people not calling him out on this? He literally said, "I want the money to go to research, not some doctor's salary." 1. Who do you think does the research?! 2. Why are YOU taking administrative costs out of the funds?!
They had a fake thank you from USCF on their website. It was written by a guy who had not been associated with the university for years. karl has it on the video
He's the Completionist!!! He's just 100%-ing his career and he's at the "corporate greedy" level. I'm really excited for his "apology music video" level
It's absolutely disgusting how he's using his mother, who can't speak for herself anymore, as a weapon to gain sympathy and a shield to deflect more than legitimate criticism. I guess that's to be expected from a guy that lies about donating to charity for 10 years though.
His dad is also involved with the charity. I wonder how aware he was of this whole situation. If he is as surprised as we the public are, or he was complicit.
@@kelsoRulezz Considering the fact that the brother also seems to be in on the fraud AND the golf tournament that's proceeds completely vanished is ran by the dad, I think it's safe to say the entire family is in on the scam. It's okay though, they'll answer for it, in this life or the next. Karl and Muta's videos on this subject are amazing, especially Karl. Watching Karl pick apart that response is honestly one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen. Also, seeing the Competionist threaten Karl with a lawsuit after all the rigmarole he’s going through with Billy Mitchell is just... adorable
The wild part is the Completionist originally apologized, appeared remorseful, vowed to correct the wrong. Instead he flipped, played victim then attacked Karl!
When did he apologize, appear remorseful, and vow to correct it? I've been following this whole saga and at no point do I recall any of those things happening.
He has likely spoken to a laywer for legal advice since and figured out this whole thing will likely land him in jail (his whole family is) so now he is on the hard deny path to try and stop that from happening.
100% on the advice of a lawyer. Lawyer gave him a script, said to follow it, including the legal threats. Lawyer probably did not fathom Karl's history of dealing with people who abuse the legal system.
My grandma passed away to dementia in May this year and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. Seeing the smartest woman in my life who helped me find my faith slowly degrade to a screaming shell of herself was heart shattering. And the FACT that Jirard lied is really disappointing for a creator I enjoyed.
You deserve extra sympathy... I can imagine the guilt of trusting someone who would later be proven to have lied about dimentia charities when your own grandmother was a dimentia victim, thus feeling like you were unwise with your grandmother's legacy.
I’m right there with you, bro. My grandma passed away in October to dementia and everything you said about her is true for mine as well. The loss still stings. I used to love watching The Completionist so this is all extra heartbreaking. You are not alone here.
I'm sorry man, I unfortunately witnessed my grandfather pass from dementia and saw how he forgot who I was. It's a terrible disease, I hope you have been able to find peace.
Sorry for your loss and the loss of others who share similar experiences. I haven't personally gone through that, but I had to learn about it in a class I took and it was horrifying. Also, fuck The Completionist for being a scumbag and adding to that trauma.
What's with people threatening to sue when they get called out on shit they did, instead of just taking the L with some dignity left and NOT risk digging their own graves?
It is a scummy thing to do and when I was in the paralegal field we were taught pretty quickly that America is a very sue heavy nation. People see it as a tool to shut people up, control people, ruin their lives, or another way to win the lottery. There are no regulations to prevent this unlike in Australia. Which is why I recommend all the good people left in America to move away.
I’m a caregiver at an assisted living and we have two memory care wings, 30 residents total. I don’t understand how you could watch your mother die from that disease and not want to use at least SOME of that money to help people who’ve been in his situation
For those that don't know basically the only crime jared is guilty of is miscommunication. What Jared was doing was a thing called an endowment fund, which is where you put money into a interest account and let the money accumulate and while the initial deposit can't be touched all the interest can and essentially provides a long-term donation where the charity continually gains interest and uses the interest to have a life long payment that the actual research organization can use.
He pretty much said "we wont be raising anymore money at these things" as if it was Karl and Muta's fault these charities wont be getting anymore money
well the good news in that is that the people looking to donate will probably just give to someone else who might actually give the money to the charities
It's fine though because it's Karl and Muta's fault that the charity (singular) got any money. Speaking of which, there sure still is the whole calling out by name charities they claimed to be donating to that still haven't received a penny, so...
@@khit007There's probably a not insignificant portion of those people who will be put off from charities for at least a while after being betrayed like this.
Threatening legal action is usually done to say "Look! Im Serious! Now believe me!" but they will never actually do it since the investigation phase will almost always fuck them over.
I think that the asshat saying he is thinking of suing Karl is just as bad considering he basically made a hot sauce untastable and made a steak turn into a charbroiled mess in "Asshat" Mitchell
I think you missed the part where Jirard literally said in the call with Muta and Karl that the reason they were scrambling to donate was the notice Karl and Muta gave of their breaking the story. It's not speculation, its fact. He wouldn't have donated if nobody knew
It’s a classic that he donated RIGHT after Karl called him out. If he didn’t call him out, that money would still be sitting in a bank account. Shameful
If youtubers didnt think views were more important than justice he couldve been charged. But now that the money has been donated theres probably not much that could be done. Similar situation happened in czechia a while back - streamer promised to donate money to a charity, kept it to herself, and the youtubers who exposed it just made a video on it, allowing her to quickly make a donation so there was nothing she couldve been charged with.
@@icedcat4021 Wouldn't be surprised this isn't how it works in the US. Legally it also doesn't make sense to me (as an amateur): so you steal something, get caught, give it back. No crime committed?
My grandmother had dementia towards the end of her life in and passed in 2020 because of it. I've seen what it can do to a family so this story is really personal in so many ways. The fact that it has taken Jirard this long to donate the money and his behavior during his response video truly says a lot about his character. I always get the thought of "Maybe that money throughout the years could've gone towards helping my grandma with her dementia. "Hell, not just my grandma , but that money could've helped so many people struggling with it but the fact that he chose NOW to do it after public scrutiny is truly deplorable. He seemed like a good guy at the time but this is truly disappointing.
yeah the tricky thing with cases like this is that even with the money finally donated, that's a decade of research that could've been done by now. Time the families will never get back
Apparently some people are, (I have no clue how true this is) but on Karl's most recent video going over this charity, one of the top comments were saying they filed a suit, gave out the information on how to look it up and said if you've been affected you should be able to either join or help provide evidence for this case.
If he hasn’t spent any of it, it hasn’t been embezzled. It’s weird, for sure, that this money has just been sitting in an account for who knows how long. As far as I know, it isn’t technically illegal and he could clear the whole thing up by giving the money to an organization that will actually do something with it.
@@derekeastman7771 except for the part where it can totally be considered embezzlement, did you miss the part where The Completionist said in his apology video "some of the donations were used to offset production costs" Literally in every stream with Indie Land hed say something along the lines of "All donations, super chats, shirts you buy, anything that you spend money on towards Indie Land will ALL be donated" Lying about where someone else's money going is a big no no.
@derekeastman7771 He used charity money to bolster his online presence and purchase gear/equipment for his business. He also mixed business money (twitch + youtube bits/donations/subs etc) claiming that all of it was going to charity. Not a single one of those were itemized in the reporting of the income for Open Hand. This means that he mixed charity and business funds, and didn't differentiate them. That is a MASSIVE issue.
@NateDates using charity money to offset production costs aren't embezzlement though. All the production costs are accounted for and he has been audited twice and then checking up and getting the "all clear" from the IRS. It's truly baffling to me that you guys trust the words of a drama-youtuber over actual professionals. Like, there's no wonder misinformation is being spread on social media with you guys who just give up your frontal cortex in the name of parasocial relationships. That being said, it's incredibly manipulative and evil to not donate money you've held for over a decade while promoting the organisation. It's just not right.
And its so cringe people were crying that Muta was "Milking this drama" when he only put out like 5 videos in 4 weeks and actually put research into his videos
And this isn't drama still! This is actually literally crime!! That's the thing that I find the most bonkers this isn't a slap fight this is straight up money stealing!!!
I like how the completionists response video just made his case worse than it already was and now the situation leans even more against the completionist than before.
I wanted to add thanks for having their back. They are getting attacked by his fans and threatened for exposing charity fraud. Your adding your voice in support matters a great deal. I have a lot of respect for you and the positions you take.
Guy literally just ran an event after "discovering" no donations left the bank and still claimed he was working with groups he admitted he never made deals with.
No wonder Jirard said "this will be my only response", because he knew there was absolutely no response to the inevitable follow up video. Absolutely damning.
My acid reflux is getting kind of bad right now. I’m trying to not eat as much at night because I think it gets worse when I do. Do you have any advice for me? My throat was burning last night
@IsraelLlerena in the short term a round of omeprazole would make a huge immediate difference. of course there’s health risks from being on it long term esp in women but the short round should be harmless. in the long term try to drink more water than acidic drinks, smaller more frequent meals rather than giant ones, and eat low acid foods like avocado, dark leafy greens, rice/quinoa, etc. there are ways to make it delicious and over time you will crave high acid foods less. and your throat will thank you :)
I used to admire Jirard and his channel. I want to make content about video games and he served as massive inspiration for me. On top of that, as someone who lost someone from Alzheimer's, I was in full support of the Open Hand Foundation. To say this whole ordeal has been like a knife to the heart from someone I idolized sucks to say the least. I guess the lesson here is not get emotionally attached to an online personality
You’re just now learning that people’s online personalities aren’t who they really are? Also, nice gaming content. You definitely don’t seem like a mentally deranged 8 year old by watching any of your videos.
You still should. the problem was that Jared didn't communicate well what the plan was. The plan was to make a endowment fund which is when a charity deposits money to accumulate interest which the interest and money is given to a research body. On the condition that they can't touch the actual donated money but they can use all the interest it accumulates. It was going to provide the foundation to give the recipient life long donations basically. The problem was he didn't communicate that.
Jirard was one of the last people I thought would ever do something like that. It really sucks that it seems like more and more "good" youtubers are turning out to be like this
@@dantebordi4122lol nah. I'll never forget when he wrote off games as bad/slow when he didn't even figure out how to use core mechanics for entire playthroughs.
Nah, I liked his content, but he always gave off weird vibes. He was overly "nice" and respectful, but it never felt genuine. It's difficult to explain, but it felt textbook. Considering his response video was full of emotional manipulation, I think my intuition was right.
Not gonna lie, he has always shown red flags of being exactly like this. Learn from this and you'll see the snakes in the grass easier. There are plenty of good TH-camrs who don't show the red flags. Jirard has always worn a mask in his videos, he's fake. That's the only red flag you need. Stick to genuine folks. Anyone acting like Jirard in their videos is fake for a reason.
Part of the money was used to keep the charity running, and funding expenses for the indieland events. Running the events, in turn, was also good PR for Jirard's public image, probably got him quite a few subscribers and followers over the years, indirectly.
Whats weird is how he acts during the discord call vs how he acted during his response. Doing right by the people calling him out by suing them is extremely insane.
I bet he has spoekn to a laywer and figured out he is likely going to prison for this. That would explain the pivit in the way they are handling this. Denying his own involement was unlikely to work so now the plan is to deny any wrong doing ever happened at all.
Honestly makes it feel like he is really manipulative. In private he acts nice and remorseful with somw defensiveness but wants to make things right but acts super defensive and aggro in public while trying to create the narrative that the two who were calling things out are leeches trying to get clout from him. He is thanking and sucking up to them in private and trying to make them pariahs in public
I can answer why so many people were convinced by Jirard's appology. It's because they like him and want him to be a good person, so they're willing to take any excuse they can to say he just made a little mistake and is actually a good guy. I know because I fell into that trap at first until I thought about it more.
Yep i agree i also fell into the trap because i respected jirard so much that i was hoping so badly that he wasn't actually a complete scumbag yet this is reality and nothing can be changed about it
Jirard inadvertently admitting to lying to donators and using the money how they chose rather than it going “directly to charity” was also the moment I understood he cannot be trusted and very likely criminal activity has been occurring for years.
Honestly, i think hes lucky it wasnt Coffeezilla who did this investigation. He wouldn't have threatened to sue, let along have people who *still* defend him.
The Xwitter and Jirard fanboy crowd would call Coffeezilla as a "TH-cam drama" channel anyway, just how they did with Karl and Muta. Don't doubt how stupid those crowds can be
@@dread46yeah they didn't do their research without the perfect lawyer lol. Also in Australia if you sue with this type of case and lose you have to pay the defendant all legal fees.
It's actually insane how terrible of a response the completionist gave. The claims before were that there was gross negligence and incompetence in the charity cause they never decided where to send the money, and Jirard just wasn't paying attention to it. But now it's pretty clear that they were outright malicious and lied about everything going on, while pretending that doing nothing with the money was no big deal (and actually somehow a good thing) despite it being "not fucking cool" just a few weeks ago.
Based on other reporting here, I think I know what’s going on. It seems like Jirard’s rich family had been running a charity scam through their golf tourney for a while now. Like they underreported the amount made from donations there and kept a small amount. Once Jirard started doing Indieland donations, that larger sum was used to hide ALL the money collected via the golf tourney, and they’ve been stealing that. Once direct donations got big enough that was ALSO used to hide his twitch donations and merch being pocketed instead of donated. I think it’s fair to say close to a million dollars has actually been donated to his organization, but he’s just pocketed the difference with some shady accounting.
I think what you’re saying. But it’s probably actually his dad or something doing the scam. Would explain why he wasn’t aware of the situation for so long, but also why he’s trying really hard to do damage control now.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case, nor would I be surprised if all the fund raising was genuinely done with the best intentions for the stated cause. That’s not a defence of them as best case scenario is that they neglectfully procrastinated on doing their one job with the money they raised, a chunk of which they very likely wouldn’t have if the donors weren’t lied to. That’s definitely plenty bad enough that it needs addressing.
@@bensonk1939But he admits he was aware since 2022. And when he talked to them he said he would “do right” and then did a heel turn to sue. AND ALSO he stated numerous times they were the main contributors to certain donations. The Conpletionist can only feign ignorance for so long here 😂
Regardless if he is disgusted if its true that he just find out, he is still screwed Regardless. All he can do if he legit wants the least worst sentence is throwing his entire family to the wolves 😂
This situation is particularly hard for me handle. I was his devout fan since I was a stupid 10 year old. Imagine the people that went without aid during that money sitting there that otherwise would have been helped. It's painful to hear about stuff like this, I had an uncle with dementia, luckily he had care but the thought of the strain that would put on a family otherwise. side note, he still has yet to donate the rest of the money, in the account the value was around 655k. the reason they donated only 600k, is because that's the number people online were pressing them to donate. so you know, something extra shady is going on in there.
@@marcosdhelenoThat's also not to mention the undisclosed amount from Subs, Bits, Merch etc which apparently ALL went towards "production costs"?? As a longtime viewer of the Completionist channel, I only found out about this situation when they posted the response video. I only made it about a third of the way through the response video before I had to stop and turn it off because I was so viscerally uncomfortable. For reasons I couldn’t pinpoint, it just made my skin crawl. To hear that at the end of that same video Jirard went as far as to threaten legal action against the investigative journalists who broke the story is shocking to me, especially since he claims to be a journalist himself. I was already seriously considering unsubbing just for how weirdly uneasy the first part of the response video made me (I’ve learned not to ignore my gut when I get that feeling), but hearing that was the final nail in the coffin for me. I can get my video game journalism elsewhere.
Also, NoClip, though they have yet to remove or comment on their relatively recent documentary praising Jirard. They also produced the official Half Life 1 anniversary documentary for Valve this year.
the saddest part about this whole thing is that he's tarnished his own tribute to his mom. He's fighting to preserve it but it's just making it worse. He needs to accept that done goofed so he can rebuild and do right by her
I don't think he will, though. Someone who's gone to such extends of evil as using his dead mother to scam people for a decade and resorting to remorseless manipulation and threats when called out on it is not someone with a right enough head to ever change for the better. This is a textbook case of narcissistic psychopathy, and that shit is chronic.
I will never forget Muta's entire breakdown after the "apology" came out. He was getting flamed when he didn't back down and backed it up by proving how contradicting Jirard was. Then he posted the full call. That was the final nail in the coffin.
I really wanted to believe Jirard. I really did. But with all that’s been revealed and seeing how he reacted… yeah. Huge letdown. Props to Karl and Mutahar for bringing light to this.
It really hurt me to see this, as someone who works with adults with disabilities and mental health issues I have seen how dementia can break down a person, I know I would've given them money because most people who has seen how destructive dementia is would have.

Yeah, the only reason the money was still there was because they were waiting for the moment they were sure they could get away with it. Also, at the end of 2022 they had roughly 650k, now a year later, after they did indieland and the golf tourny, they only donated 600. At bare minimum they are 50k short but probably closer to 100k, and that doesn't include the golf money missing from the total figure to begin with.
The balls to do something this intense still baffles me. I mean after years of support from the community you’d think this level of deceit would eat at you slowly over time.
@@FlameHricaneYou know money can be moved between accounts right?
@@FlameHricanesorry but one important aspect of that is wrong: "the money" wasn't donated, only the 600k. But a huge chunk of the money seems to be lost or off the books, or illegally spent. Like hundreds of thousands over the years are just missing.

Jerard is delusional and thinks the court will side with him when they've exposed so much of his lies.
What blew me away was the defense arguments that it was just negligence. Just threaten them and they might shut up without you having to do anything else.

On top of that, as someone who lost someone from Alzheimer's, I was in full support of the Open Hand Foundation.

I bet he has spoekn to a laywer and figured out he is likely going to prison for this. That would explain the pivit in the way they are handling this. Denying his own involement was unlikely to work so now the plan is to deny any wrong doing ever happened at all.

What's ACTUALLY insane were the people falling over themselves to laud it as a great video that totally redeemed him.
Yep, pretty much what I think too.
