      they did a lot of crazy stuff back then. they never had sharks from what I heard but this is still a work of fiction and it was definitely a creative touch to the fight scenes. Rome was insane so they could have done anything to get the sharks in there. especially in this fictional version of the roman coliseum.
      They did have monkeys though. I know that.

    It was certainly a lot better then I was expecting. If you go into the movie with negative expectations, and nittpicking the whole 2 hours and 30 minutes, you simply won't enjoy it. However if you are hyped and want to watch a good movie about dudes fighting while tying in the 1st Gladiator movie and second movie better than expected, you'll most likely enjoy it. The first movie is better no doubt, but the 2nd one is not as bad some people are making it out to be.

    • @jctheii
      @jctheii หลายเดือนก่อน +88

      EXACTLY dude. The insane nitpicking and expecting a masterpiece like the first one is absurd. I went in being excited for the story to continue on the big screen and i got my money's worth. No expectations besides hoping being a decent movie, and it was that

    • @theidlemindsAU
      @theidlemindsAU หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      Does nit picking include not liking a totally ass and laughable CGI monkey fight which also applies to a a ridiculous rhino and shark fight? The movie just doesn't even bother building stakes. Pedro Pascal doesn't want to be there, the awful dead wife setup isn't even a setup, I don't care about any of these people and in general the movie sucks whether you stop and think about it or not. The Tigris of Gaul fight from the first movie has better stakes, feels more visceral and has a sense of danger more than any of the garbage "dudes fighting" in this mess of a film. Turning your brain off is fine, but the movie constantly asks you not to by making you wonder why it sucks so hard when all the bits are there to make it awesome.

    • @Apocalypse3434
      @Apocalypse3434 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I agree. If someone is expecting it be as good as the first one then the standards are already too high. There were things I didn't like about G2, mostly involving animals, but I still have recommended people to watch it (just tempering expectations a bit).

      I totally agree. Imagine being so mediocre that you have to ask your audience to shut down their higher brain functions because you can't be arsed to come up with an actual story.
      Ffs man, this was a literal carbon copy of the original.
      Like I understand the "overlook the part where non of this is actual Roman history" but everything else worked in the original.
      A superb cast and a strong classical heroe's story leaving you feeling like a hero yourself after watching this.
      The end message of this movie is literally "Yeah the Roman dream is dead, it's up to you now. Go figure something out. Bye"

It's something that actually bothered me, he has a great chance there at the beginning to kill the emperors but doesn't take it (when they are at their weird party thing). He doesn't HATE Rome, he hates Acacius and it's a massive flaw in the screenplay. Making Acacius the personification of Rome and his rage to take it down. @lemmypop1300 i see your point but british accents in Hollywood, and in particular, old world accents are utilized in period prices taking place in classical antiquity. The actress that portrays Lucilla, she's american and she puts on a british accent bro. American accents feel off in movies like this, its def not just me. Denzels character was probably representing someone from Mauritania, numidia, former punic territory. We saw how different those dudes sounded from him doe at the beginning of the movie and through interactions with other gladiators in the keep. IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE bro. I just looked it up, marcrinus was from a berber equestrian family in present day Alegria.

      I saw the comment about Denzels accent in the film on another channel, but considering the channel it just seems to morph into unnecessary hate for Denzel and how he is a terrible actor and never has been. Or people say he's just a movie star not an actor. Im pretty sure they where speakng in certain context because the general hate for the movie sunk down to Denzel and how terrible he made the movie.

    Generally agree but Charlie missed a lot of big hints I think lol, like the smaller twin is insane because of syphilis. Denzel's character worked out himself who luscious is pretty much and targets the bald dude because he is known for having spies everywhere so he can get the details of the plot he worked out must be going on, and ties into his plot he already had to take over by accumulating power/wealth. To me it didn't make sense why the bald dude told him though because Denzel is not gonna give him his house back anyway. Luscious forgives the general because he's not the type to slaughter a dude who got on his knee's and said he loved his father and mother so just submits. Denzel's character is an ex gladiator who was good enough to buy his freedom and actually gets the better of luscious easily but is thwarted by Maximus's armour, the ultimate plot armour lol. Also I'm pretty sure luscious was aiming for the general with the crossbow and missed.

    I wished they had done a better job playing up the parallels between Lucious and Denzel’s character. They’re both people who were burned by Rome and lost faith in its ability to be redeemed so they just want it to burn. Lucious learns to let go of his hatred and see the potential in Rome whereas Denzel can’t. It’s like the opposite of the first Gladiator where the solution isn’t revenge, but learning to work past it and see the good which hatred blinded you to (not that this solution would have worked for Maximus since Commodus could only be killed for Rome to have a chance). There were a lot of interesting concepts that just didn’t really come out well in the end. Would have liked to see a more natural transition for Lucious.

    Yes there’s films being recreated all over but this one is not one of those. Ridley Scott always wanted to make a second one but he couldn’t find the right time for it or something like that. My point is that this is not a case of studio forcing a sequel down our throats like they love to do, but it is instead a project a little more close to heart for the director.

    I was hoping that Charlie would plug in Gladiator 2 to the ol' Moist Meter. The sequel obviously is not as great as the original classic starring Russell Crowe. I don't think anyone actually thought that Gladiator 2 was ever going to equal or even surpass the original masterpiece that was Gladiator 1 but Gladiator 2 is still a thrilling & fun epic adventure film with cool fight & battle scenes, a solid sequel to an all-time magnificent Oscar-winning epic. Gladiator 2 is not as brilliant as Gladiator 1 but its still a fun time at the movies. I just wish they hadn't recast Lucius.
    FUN FACT: Lucius being revealed as Maximus & Lucilla's son was made canon long before Gladiator 2 was even in development, in the pages of the official Gladiator movie novelization book that was released in bookstores when Gladiator 1 originally released in theaters.

    The way I viewed it was that his lashing out at his mother was an instinctual reaction due to him sort of denying his past all this time stating that that boy is dead. Once he had more time to sit with the thought and connect back with his past which is now seemingly becoming undeniable and inescapable. I think that it feels “fast” because of how severe his reaction was to his mother but in reality it was already happening well before that confrontation the second he entered Rome again.

I think the classic story of the original will never be beaten as it is just seen as perfect however I do think that gladiator 2’s deep dive into some of the characters flaws/mistakes (Marcus Aurelius) will be appreciated in the years to come and the movie will be viewed just like Star Wars KOTOR 2. A very tough watch at times due to the opposite tone from the first film in some places however a good movie in my opinion and defo not what some critics are calling bad compared to the stuff that cinemas are putting out today.

At the start when Marcus and his men were coming to attack, you see the ship go right against the walls so they can climb it with ladders. However, like 30 minutes later in world, you see Lucius walk like 60 meters from land into the sea and the water only comes up to his chest. I know things like this are insignificant but when teams focus on making sure every bit of detail fits and works, it makes the entire movie look better
