Their career together has produced 18 studio albums - six achieving multi-platinum status - and clocked up six US number one hit singles. They have sold over 40 million albums worldwide, been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and have been awarded their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame."

They went with a bit of a Motown for this song--they did contemporary and pop songs for sure, but they also leaned into a bit of R&B and even blues in their music as well. A number of female performers in the music industry later admitted they really went for Daryl Hall's voice. Ton of hits by this duo--they really churned it out over two-plus decades.

Omg...Hall and Oats is one of mine and my wife's favorite bands. They are pretty unique in the way they create their art because they write their songs, but they do it separately and then come together and put together music to the lyrics. I know with this particular song John Oats wrote this song about the "Girl that got away." Lyrically their songs are brilliant. I'm just mesmerized by their music.

I'll leave it at that. Glad someone turned you on to Hall and Oates. This one song was what ALL of FM radio used to sound like...24/7. These were 'typical' "BANDS" played on the radio -- before the DECADES of turn-tables, 'looks-ism', 'sampling', and 'gimmickry' took over the MUSIC and radio industries. Will share your channel. Yeah, throwback to old R&B! You hit the nail on the head. Hall & Oates cut their teeth on such music mostly out of their hometown Philadelphia.
Daryl did most of the songwriting for the duo but this one is strictly from the pen of John Oates. I think it was the follow-up to the initial success of their opener hit, "Sara Smile." John as songwriter expertly captures the mood of losing at romance. In fact, I think he wrote it while breaking up with a woman and was himself feeling pretty blue.
Meanwhile Daryl was doing fine with his new and (eventually) long-term relationship with Sara.
I guess John's pain at his loss paid off after all.

Hall and Oats were huge in the 80's, as a matter of fact they just started up a new tour. Darryl Hall also plays concerts with other artists that are posted only called "Live From Darryl's House", check it out.

They are the biggest selling music duo in history I believe. So many classics. Kings of "Blue Eyed Soul".

Hall & Oates are amazing! Asia, you have to check out "Sara Smile"...one of the nicest songs ever. Darryl Hall is the one that does most of the lead singing (tall blonde hair guy). "Sara Smile" goes right to the top of the playlist. I suggested it it before, but, now that you`ve started the Hall & Oates journey...Sara Smile, I Can`t Go For That, One on One, You`ve Lost That Loving Feeling, Maneater, ...but, "Sara Smile" is THE Song.

Hall & Oates are an American pop rock duo, and the most successful duos of all times, formed in 1970 in Philadelphia. They have produced hit after hit such as Sara Smile, Rich Girl, Out of Touch and I Can't Go For That.

It is The Philly sound! They both admired black singers growing up. John Oates once said everytime he writes a song he tries to do it like Curtis Mayfield. I got to see them in concert close up 2 years ago. So many great songs.

I was in 8th grade when this song was new, and I liked bands based on loud ass guitars. But this one sure got my attention. Glad to see it’s reaching you too! Can’t go wrong w these guys.

For me one of the greatest lines in a song, and BJ laughed, is she's gone, he is thinking ,walking around and he says, "" could spend eternity in the City let the carbon and monoxide choke my thoughts away"" . Thanks for the video.

Asia & BJ. The funny thing is this was a B-side that a rock and roll station played late night and a R&B DJ heard it and decided to play it on his slow jams and the song jumped up the Soul charts. Which is interesting because their roots were in R&B growing up in Philly…

Love Hall and Oates. Daryl Hall had a tv show live from Daryl's house where he invites many contemporary artists to his house to jam. The videos are on youtuve.

They are from Philadelphia where a lot of R&B artists and groups originated from. That was where there inspiration came from. They started in the 70's and were very good. But when MTV came on the scene it made them a global finommia. They have dozens of great songs from both decades.
