where did you get them funny looking head phones !
got one for ya sweet thing by rufus and chaka kahn short but sweet!
Sara's Smile is a MUST!!!
🤫😉👏🎸🎵😎
John Oates wrote this song after he was stood up. Incredible harmonies. Never get sick of listening to them.
See if you can find the New York Songwriters guild meeting where Jon plays this by himself with just an acoustic and the crowd join in. Its utterly gorgeous and dripping with feel.
Darryl Hall is criminally underrated as a vocalist, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century.
As a teen growing up in the 70's, I loved the music of Hall & Oates. The local radio station in Tarboro, NC played many of their tunes that were popular back then. Such a great musical duo with terrific voices.
I met Daryl around 1977, a few years after "Abandoned Luncheonette"was released...(the luncheonette was in my area too). ...My friend knew him very well so he came over to his home one day....There were 3 of us sitting around on the floor with Daryl just talking and having an everday conversation. He stayed and visited for a couple hours......He was so nice and I also remember how thin he was at that time too. Very nice time....He truly had a phenomenal voice!
Hello, Ms Roars. I'm Japanese. Thanks for your nice analysis of Hall & Oates' old good song. 1980s, they were very famous in Japan, especially young Japanese women liked them very much. My most favorite Hall & Oates' song is 'Wait for me'.
There are very good reasons why Hall and Oats are still the most successful duo of all time and this is my favorite of all their great songs.
Hall & Oates were possibly the most successful mainstream music duo of the late 70's/early 80's with dozens of hit songs to their name. You should definitely do a deep dive into their catalogue. You also owe it to yourself to go down the rabbit hole of "Live From Daryl's House" episodes where the who's who of artists visit Daryl Hall's Club in upstate NY and jam with his house band for a while...he's been doing that since 2007 and there are some amazing performances (check out Joe Walsh's visit in particular).
Personally, I think Todd Rundgren and Daryl did the best session. At least singing wise. They challenged each other to take it up another notch.
I hope she gets LOTS of recs for Live from Daryl's House!
@@VoxTone2009 I still get chills watching that one.
Live From Daryl's House * Tommy Shaw
“The duo reached the US Top 40 with 29 of their 33 singles charting on Billboard's Hot 100 between 1974 and 1991.
PLUS 6 #1 Hits”
Try Live From Daryl's House where he does songs with different artists to show how quickly they do a song mix.
I really liked this analysis, it's because it always brings us something different, I like it
Always been my favourite Hall & Oates song and proof of what great singers they both were and incredible writers.
Man, several years ago Hall & Oates played a concert at a smallish nearby outdoor venue. It ended up being a perfect July night for my wife and I (she is the biggest Hall & Oates fan and got me to appreciate them). Nothing fancy, just amazingly great music and one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Sad to hear they have now had a serious falling out, but they are just two amazing musicians.
I literally grew up listening to Hall & Oates. They are from the Philadelphia, Pa. area are were tabbed by DJs as "Blue Eyed Soul". They had hit after hit after hit. They later parted ways. Both are still in the music industry. Take care....
That was the Righteous Brothers
LOL, just saw this post, it's almost an echo of mine! I grew up in the Philly burbs as a teen in the 70s. SO good. I remember seeing them at the Tower Theater.
@@TxVoodoo_no better venue than the Tower!
@@michaeloreilly2533 Ain't that the truth? Saw so many great acts there over the years. I moved away in the mid 90s, but I'm moving back soon!
@@joer1678 The Righteous Brothers were indeed the FIRST to be known as "Blue Eyed Soul" but the term is generic and was applied to many other white artists including Hall & Oates. Take care...
Always listen to Hall and Oates for the good memories.
The keyboard solo is a replacement for a sax solo in the studio version.
A great song, a great band. It sounds as fresh today as it did nearly 50 years back!
It's adorable (and strangely satisfying) to see you enjoy this so much.
Sound of my teens! I grew up in Philly in the 70s. Pure blue-eyed soul, influenced by the Philadelphia soul groups of the 60s and 70s. From my hometown! Please look at some of their other songs from this era, like Sara Smile. Also, the studio version of She's Gone has a very different, but wonderful vibe.
Also, check out "Live From Daryl's House", which is on youtube. Many, many famous folk do a jam session with Daryl Hall, and there are some spine tingling moments in there! Like Todd Rundgren, among others.
Oates is rarely given his due, either as a singer or creative contributor... Always hoped to hear more songs with him singing lead.
I totally agree! The song "Possession obsession" is my favorite Oates song. Have you heard it?
Also agree. Deserves more attention. His rarer solo vocals with them are outstanding. And his solo work is also great.
Keyboard solo was on a Minimoog
The keyboard in question is a Minimoog synthesizer.
Yeah you cn tell that it's a monosynth.
Depending on the day either "She's Gone" or "Sara Smile" is my favorite song by these guys. Today it's "She's Gone". Listen to the beautiful studio version of "Sara Smile".
Blue-eyed soul at its best!
Love it!! I’m a bass player and you actually gave cred to the bassist…bravo!! 👏🏻👏🏻
I Can't Go for That and Private Eyes are absolutely bangers, listen to those Hall & Oates songs
Hard to believe that you weren't familiar with the most popular duo in popular music history.
The BBC concentrates on playing UK artists, and a lot of folks across the pond have never heard many staples of American radio. I made friends with a middle-aged gal from Norwich and I was constantly shocked at what she hadn't heard.
Most popular? Not hardly
It's not hard at all to believe someone hasn't heard of you've heard of. Also, while Hall & Oates were extremely successful here ("the most popular duo in music history" comes from the band's own website), they were far less successful in the UK. Still a massive hit over there, but far fewer singles and albums made the charts.
I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes people have a different experience of the world than you do.
@@aaronnichols8159
Milli Vanilli! Yes!
@@aaronnichols8159definitely top 10 though.
Old Grey Whistle Test was a great live music show. Some great different takes on hit songs.
Yes, Old Grey Whistle Test was BBC's great music show. When I was a teenager, sometimes I liked to watch them on NHK's program in Japan. Of course, not live shows in Japan. My best favorite program was Blondie's live show. I was in love with young Debbie Hurry.
Holy Smokes, BETH!!!
Talk about taking these reaction vids to the next level!! Thanks for even getting into the technical terms and meanings, AND the instruments and their inner workings!! I love this performance and have seen it before. I usually would not “like” the interruptions, altho I totally get they are required to use the vids at all. BUT if ya gotta do interrupt, it’s so awesome you took the time to make it interesting and educational without becoming a lecture! Next Level for sure!! ❤❤❤
Thanks Bill
Old Grey Whistle Test, sadly missed and the greatest launch pad in the UK for great artists (and I mean A-Z) as well as the greatest into to music lovers...all pre-internet of course and mostly truly live. Fantastic!
Thanks Beth! As always, pointing out details that I totally miss. My first time hearing this sung live, rather more intricate than what I remember the studio/radio-play version being. And always fun to watch musicians ply their craft.
One of my favorite groups in the 70's.
This is by far one of the most sensual songs not only of this duo but of all the music that was made in the 80s, it is so exquisitely captivating that it makes you want to listen to it while you are making love. Hall & Oates certainly went far with this topic.
Daryl Hall is just an insanely great singer. Look at some of his videos in the past 15 years from Live From Daryl’s House- here is a man who has never stoped playing and learning his entire life and you can see him getting even better when you thought I would be impossible for that to happen. They were the first concert I ever saw in 1982. I was so lucky to have them as the soundtrack of a good portion of my life.
Love your insight. I think the keyboard section was originally a sax solo which is even better. This song actually is typical of their catalo, not really a change. They are Philly Blues, the songs you cited of theirs are more ‘pop’ than most. Sara smile is a personal favorite and is why I named my girl that.
LOVE your facial reaction as it hit....one of THE best duos ever and their music is timeless!!
Whenever I think "I need a drink", my mind always follows with "and a quick decision" because of this song.
Fantastic reaction and I learned A LOT from it! Thank you Beth!!
Great memories from the 80's when I was a young teenager living on my own in a new country and a new language. Thank you Beth!!!
Thank you so much for all your insights and explanations.
You nailed it the end. It sounds improvised, but I can assure you, it was many hours of polishing, grinding work. Repetition and hard work pays off.
Glad you felt that a lot of this was improvised, you are correct! Some melody changes and riffing here. This was a great Live performance, but you might want to listen to the studio version as well, which is perfection. This is my favorite song by them!
Awesome! H&O's best song, imo. Deep 70s.
Early Hall & Oates (pre-MTV) put out some awesome music.
I love watching and listening to your reaction, when you hear songs for the first time - that I regrettably grew up with 😊
Beautiful song, gorgeous Beth
Im so glad you found this song! One of my favorites by this duo. Darryl Hall is right up there with George Michael and others as a GREAT male singer of the 20th century.
I was seemingly a fan of Hall & Oates as a kid; my mother’s said I knew some of their song titles. Quite a few years before I truly grasped music. And funny enough, but I never heard this tune until I was an adult. Now it’s my favorite track by them.
Great song and so glad John Oates' singing was highlighted...he really does have a great voice. Unfortunately their relationship is kaput now....but Live at Daryl's House is great on its own. Hopefully it will come back with new episodes. 🖐 Wisconsin...beer and summerfest coming soon!
When Hall & Oates came to Newcastle (Australia) in the early 80's, I had arguably one of the best seats in the Civic Theatre. 20-30 feet above the stage, sat in a chair that was gaffe taped to the flys with a purple follow spot that I had to keep trained on Jon Oates (have you any idea how hard it is to see a purple follow spot?). I was one up on my younger brother in that while we were both up there with follow spots, at least my chair had a seat belt.
love your reactions

Great reaction Beth from your new subscriber wintersun Alex USA. ❄️❄️❤️😆
Love it, love you !!
I met Darryl Hall in upstate NY where I grew up. That's was back in the 70's. I liked this song and so did a lot of other people.
I can see why u like them. Big fan too 😁😎 BTW, speaking of fans, segue, how can you possibly hear them with all that GORGEOUS red hair in your way? No, seriously, i love your descriptions and you've added some nice graphics to your vid. Nice! 😎👍❤️
Their cover of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" is great but they have a lot of great songs. It's both a shame & a huge accomplishment that they recently split after 50 years together.
You go gurl, excellent analysis, and thanks for the Wurlitzer info!
Except that solo was from a synth keyboard, possibly a Moog. An electric piano is what you hear on Billy Joel - "Just The Way You Are", The Doors - "Riders On The Storm" among others. The most commonly used brands/models are Wurlitzer or Fender Rhodes.
Hall and Oates is a huge, huge deep dive. So, so many good songs.
That is a mini-Moog synth, not an electric piano. Electric Piano is what you hear on songs like Billy Joel - "Just The Way You Are" and The Doors - "Riders On The Storm". The two most commonly used are a Wurlitzer, or a Fender Rhodes. Saxophone was used for the solo on the album version.
Daryl Hall is one of the most soulful and talented singers out there. Still making music.
Hall & Oates live cover of "Me and Mrs Jones" us incredible.
Awesome analysis!
Along with Sara Smile, by far their best.
This episode of TOGWT aired in '76 - the song released in '73
Classic H&O
When it was released in '73 it only reached #60 (in the US). After "Sara Smile" became a hit in '76, they re-released it and it went to "#7.
The entire album is great!
Just finished listening to Rick Beato's take on the top ten songs currently on Spotify (Two are by Taylor Swift). This song crushes all of them.
Definitely one of their best imo.
It isn't like this here, but in the '80s - as many folks did - Daryl Hall had epic hair! I remember wishing that I could get my hair to look like that ... I definitely had no idea how much time it probably took to get his hair to look that way, or I wouldn't have wished for it 😄
It's also interesting to see how this version differs from what I bet was the second release, the one I'm more accustomed to. Normally we get your reaction to a newer version of a song!
Beth, I would love to hear your reaction to the Seekers, especially your thoughts on Judith Durham and her voice in the 1960's (The Carnival is Over, etc) and then in the 2013ish tours (any of their songs, but maybe "I am Australian"
Blue eyed soul at its best. Great reaction and review. 👊🏻
Excellent, educational and entertaining reaction to a stone-cold classic. Looking forward to future reactions to H&O.
The Bass player was definately the 'Unsung Hero' of this rendition!
Many people knew them as successful songwriters and performers. Which they were. But they were also talented singers, multi instrumentalists and producers. ✅
They were the second..what was called Blue Eyed soul. The first were the Righteous Brothers. Great stuff.
You're finally getting around to covering overlooked and obscure bands like Hall & Oates. Never mind that they were the most successful band of the 1980s. :-D
Overlooked and obscure? Hope you were kidding.
@@Nightrelic Did you stop reading there? :-D
NIce reaction. Abandoned luncheonette is the album you want to do. Everything on side 1 is amazing. love the electric Oboe.
Man. I forgot about this song. Classic.
Different than the recording I am familiar with. Thanks for the interesting analysis!
For a personal treat, check out some of the guest artists on "Live at Daryl's Place". The guests are awesome and the atmosphere (they're playing in a small wooden house) is wonderful. I have way too many favorites to list, but a big fav is Grace Potter - "Things I never needed" PS I have a huge crush on her!
Exelente cantante es un placer escucharlo tanto como tu reacción exelente las dos partes bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀 mí H Prrj 💙💜
The best of blue eyed Philly soul. Deep rabbit hole.
You should listen to "Sara Smile" from a German show called Musikladen probably from the 70s. Hall's voice will knock you out cold.
I had actually forgotten about this song. It's criminal how radio algorithms (?) just keep on playing the same stuff again and again and neglect tracks like this. Even the "oldies " stations!
You can make an analysis of the music of a Brazilian singer called Guilherme de Sá, specifically "Deo Vero" and "Lonely" there he has an incredible vocal technique it is interesting how he makes a roller coaster of tones
I so wish you would go back to doing studio versions, especially with Hall & Oates ... they studio versions are so much better !!!
your new / old favorite band
Great reaction
You can’t beat Hall & Oates in thier prime🤘🤘
One of the best versions of this and Kiss on my list have beeen with Rob Thomas on Live at Dayrls house
Interesting, I grew up about 35-40 miles from Daryl Hall and more interesting is that we share the same birthdate and same year. I have loved them both from the beginning. Nice review, Beth.
One of H & O rare trips to UK, an appearance on late night music show Old Grey Whistle Test - one singer / band in a basic studio. It is sad they have split with John suing Daryl because of some money dispute. I saw them at what I think was their last trip to UK & they did the concert straight to CD
Blue-Eyed Soul at it's best...🤩
Great analysis Beth from your new subscriber wintersun Alex USA ❄️🫶❤️
Someone often grouped with Daryl vocal wise is Todd Rundgren. I really wish you would react to his song Hawking recorded live in Japan. Rundgren and a number of backing vocalists laying it down
I’ve always liked how obviously high during that live show they were
If you haven’t already, please give a reaction to Sarah Smile.
This is one where you really need to do the studio version. The production is pretty ridiculous.
It's hard to get a good look at it, but the keyboard is probably a Mini-Moog. It would have been a new-fangled toy at the time, only a few years out. Before that it was generally big modular systems.
Both Moog, Arp, and others finally condensed the core aspects of their modular systems into touring friendly packages like the MiniMoog and Arp 2600. And awful lot of the stage synth work you'd have heard back then would have been one of those. And still today of course. The MiniMoog is still going strong, and the 2600 has been cloned by a few different folks and reissued by Korg who bought the name back when.
Not sure if you've reacted to Mary Chapin Carpenter yet but I'd love you to start with Only A Dream by her. Love your channel. Keep up the great work!
Sara Smile is sooooo good. Next please!
