The original was sung by Teddy Pendergrass when he was in Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. In the mid-70s. Simply Red did it proud though.

Written by a composer and lyricist. Tried to get Patti LaBelle to do it but she declined. Check out the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes version. Interesting history- "If You Don't Know Me by Now" was originally written for Labelle (a trio led by Patti LaBelle) but they never recorded it. Much like the issue with "I Miss You" and The Dells passing on it, the song's composers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff gave it to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which featured Teddy Pendergrass as lead vocalist. In addition to the single release, the track was included on their debut album I Miss You.

“You’ve got it” is from the same period and an amazing track also. But yeah Mick Hugnall simply has an amazing voice. He is truly gifted, I remember seeing Simply red live once and was amazed how little difference there was between him singing live vs the recorded stuff. Teddy Pendergrass did it first. I thought Simply Red was the first too. I was in high school when this version came out. I remeber it being familiar but it wasn't till years later I found out it was a cover. I've since heard both versions and I can't pick the best. Teddy is phenomenal as usual but when Red does it I'm always amazed that his voice is that beautiful. I'm torn LOL
I've seen him live many times and there is never a bum note. Quite frankly I think he is better live.

This is a very nice cover by Simply Red but this does not compare to Teddy Pendergrass, lead singer, of Herold Melvin and The Blue Notes (1972). So many great songs from them in the '70s known as the Sounds of Philly. Other great songs by them are "Wake Up Everybody", "Bad Luck", "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon"
Mick Hucknall lived in Milan, Italy, in the late 90s. He lived in the apartment above my girlfriend's grandmother's. I met him in the elevator. LOL
