Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes was the original artist and would be proud. Simply Red did a phenomenal job covering this song.

Written by a composer and lyricist. Tried to get Patti LaBelle to do it but she declined. Check out the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes version. Interesting history- "If You Don't Know Me by Now" was originally written for Labelle (a trio led by Patti LaBelle) but they never recorded it. Much like the issue with "I Miss You" and The Dells passing on it, the song's composers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff gave it to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which featured Teddy Pendergrass as lead vocalist. In addition to the single release, the track was included on their debut album I Miss You.

Gotta do "holding back the years" now.. lol a song he wrote when he was like 14 or 15 yrs old. Money's to tight and a fun dance cut "sunrise" where he sings over a Hall and Oats song, i cant go for that (no can do).

It became their first hit after being released as a single in September 1972, topping the US R&B chart and peaking at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

They do a nice cover of the Gamble/Huff composition, but noone sang it quite like Teddy Pendergrass with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. Yeah, part of the Philly soul experience in the 70s. Give it up for Philly soul.

Pure Soul music, the best genre for a badass vocalist like Mick.
