You are so right there. I remember back in the early 80's when they were at their height in popularity, it seemed as if they never got the respect they deserved. They had more top 40 hits of the 80's and most were between 80 and 85. Yet, rarely, were they ever talked about or had the superstar status like Michael Jackson or Madonna.

Hall & Oates are a great American pop rock duo who had their biggest success in the 70's-80's. They had a lot of great hits such as "Rich Girl", Kiss On My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", "Out Of Touch", "She's Gone", "Sara Smile", "You Make My Dreams", "Family Man", "Say It Isn't So", "Method Of Modern Love" etc.

Spot on - especially in the 80s NYC was like a flytrap for the hopeful rich. John Oates said in an interview : _"It's about greed, avarice, and spoiled riches. But we have it in the setting of a girl because it's more relatable. It's something that people can understand. That's what we do all of the time"_

A couple of Philly guys, they met while matriculating at Temple U., and formed a band in 1970 that would go on to be major players in the pop, and soul, music scenes for a decade and a half, recording SIX # 1 Hits! They should have EIGHT, as their two best songs *"She's Gone"* and *"Sara Smile"* astonishingly did not reach # 1 when they each came out. Hall & Oates are the best-selling duo in music history!

A lot of the 80s saxophone, in my opinion, was a style that seemed to be imitating the sounds of large cities...car horns, trains and harbour ship horns all a part of modern city scapes. The echoes especially remind me of living in Sydney Australia hearing ship horns when sounded bouncing off the harbour cliffs and buildings slowly pettering off after many seconds. I assume these would sound the same in any city.I maybe entirely wrong, but for me the saxophone when played like it is in this sob song certainly reminds me of the city at night.

    So many great songs.

  • @XtheLostGen
    @XtheLostGen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Your take on the lyrics is on point with multiple interpretations:
    1. She's a predator.
    2. She's in it for the bag.
    3. He's not seeing red flags (her eyes on the door).
    4. She's not hiding who she is, so don't fall for the her that his mind made up.
    5. She's not a Maneater. He's been dumped/ rejected & he's lying bc he doesn't want anyone else to have her.
That last one's a stretch, but this was the early 80's when songs about stalking were popular, like the Police's "Every Breath You Take".
There were lots of songs @ the time with the "Woman is bad" theme or woman is an object & not seen as a whole person.
    To name a few:
"Roxanne" (Sting threatens a sex worker) & "Don't Stand So Close to Me" (Sting is a child predator) by the Police.
"Billy Jean". ("She Trapped Me by Getting Pregnant". We need Maury Povich's help with a paternity test.)
"Centerfold" & "Pretty Woman" (The relationship only exists in the man's mind. They've never even spoken to her).
"Is She Really Going Out with Him" by Joe Jackson, a song from the POV of an incel "nice guy".
On the flip side, there's 1980's live version (Providence, RI) of the Kinks' "Lola", which is a song about a young man who falls for a trans woman. In the lyrics, he actually sees her and has genuine affection for her.

Produced by Daryl Hall and John Oates. Written by them and Sara Allen.
    Signature song for the duo.
2 years later, Daryl Hall sang backing vocal for INXS in the song Original Sin. Produced by Nile Rodgers.
3 years later, John Oates flew down to Sydney, Australia. He and Iva Davies wrote Electric Blue. Iva Davies is the only original member for his band Icehouse.
All-star in the band. In the video and in the studio. Lead guitar by GE Smith from the Saturday Night Live Band.
Drums by Mickey Curry. No relation to Stephen Curry. MC played drums for Steve Jones, Andy Taylor, The Cult, Alice Cooper and Tom Cochrane. MC quit Hall and Oates. He became the drummer for Bryan Adams.
30 years ago, MC was the studio drummer for Steve Jones, Andy Taylor and Bryan Adams. MC was smoking hot! L🤣L
Then the manager for Hall and Oates was Tommy Mattola. He was promoted to executive. He later married Mariah Carey but got divorced. TM is married to Thalia.
RIP Tom Wolk, bass guitar, Michael Hutchence, who sang with Daryl Hall.
