Does anyone else consciously feel genuine melancholy coursing through this song? It always makes me feel sad and it lingers after the song is over. The chorus is famously triumphant and anthemic, but it's tinged with a direct yearning that I think people feel but don't exactly register, if that makes sense. A yearning for a kind life beyond a feeling of quiet emptiness, conveyed through the urgency of the music and cryptic lyrics. As the narrator seeks to find someone or something to make him feel whole again, the listener understands how compelling and identifiable that feeling is. It's radiance mixed with sadness and I think that may explain its enormous popularity with the youth of today (and those who fondly remember it from a time long gone). That mix of feeling is so pure and seemingly uncomplicated that it just hooks so many and plucks a deep, resonant chord. Maybe it's just my rueful nature, but I'm sure people of all dispositions can understand this. There's something desperately melancholy about it becoming THE millennial anthem - I believe it's appeal for millions lies in the current political/social climate. It's a catharsis for the young people becoming adults in strange times. (4/4/18)
Wonderfully expressed! I’m also 38 and was in Africa for a few months as a 4 year old when this song came out. I’m a teen of the 80s. I find this song has amazing engineering. Idk who did this. The blends and variety of instruments and vocal harmonies. The base line strings it all together. Just wish I could explain it but this must have been hell to put together. Every time I hear it there is another piece I didn’t notice before.
I've been hearing this song for 40 years, and until I saw this video, it never even occurred to me that the drummer had anything but a typical kit. I was surprised to see him using just two drums and a cymbal!
@@MrHantz101 The video is kind of posed. The drummer, Jeff, recorded this on a standard kit and there was some additional percussion overlayed too. The main beat is actually genius in its simplicity, it's the percussion that makes it sound a little more complicated when put together.

To everyone here reading this, remember that we were here at the BEGINNING of Gibs Ogden's amazing journey. Don't forget this comment if he actually makes it the whole decade. Godspeed.
I can imagine that when Gibs Ogden is crossing the road, shopping, walking through the park, hanging out all the gunmen on the roofs are controlling area so he can safely complete his quest without any threatening.
Weezer showed that the chorus can be done well with electric guitar instead of brass. I was impressed with how well it worked without any accompaniment, but I still like the original more.
You know They're Masters of their craft when they managed to fit the phrase As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti into the song seamlessly
It's far from seamless... there's at least six more syllables than one would normally try to jam into 2 bars of music. :) But they made it work in the song, and it's a very evocative lyric.

The moment Gibs Ogden stops commenting is the moment I lose faith in humanity. Well, that sucks. Or rather, it would if not for the fact that thousands of other people listen to this every passing day.
Even if Gibs Ogden fails (at some point) in their epic quest, they've still achieved legend status for one of the most unintentionally funny, inspiring and straight-the-fuck-outta-nowhere memes in the past decade alone.
The fact that this absolute legendary musician is the son of John Williams AKA the man responsible for for many of the most iconic film scores from the 1970s, 80s and the 90s proves just how talented their family is

Imagine you’re at the end of a fast and furious or marvel or Michael bay movie or the new Disney movies. They sped up, sampled the chorus and had mr. 305 add his artistic opinion to it... really it seems ,to me at least, a piss poor rendition. Haven’t heard the Pitbull version yet, is it really THAT bad?
yes
your ears are gonna bled
it sucks.
Imagine you’re at the end of a fast and furious or marvel or Michael bay movie or the new Disney movies. They sped up, sampled the chorus and had mr. 305 add his artistic opinion to it... really it seems ,to me at least, a piss poor rendition. The words didn’t mesh with the chorus, and while I didn’t see the movie, it may be a stretch for that.
Tl:dr it’s awful
yes, don't listen to it
I miss this song!!!!!!!!
