  • With the hardware installed in part 2, it's time to install Windows XP, take it for spin and take a look at some of the software and games from the early 2000s. Of course it's never quite that straightforward, but lets give it a try...

    I had an Athlon XP 2800+, 512MB DDR 333, GeForce 4 Ti 4800, and Sound Blaster Audigy. I then went to a laptop as I needed mobility. That had an Athlon 64 3200+ (S754), 1GB DDR 400, Radeon 9600XT (MR9700), and later an Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. That was an absolute beast of a machine.
    Now have a Shuttle XPC Athlon 64 3200+ (S754), 2GB DDR 400, Radeon X800 XT PE, and Audigy 2 ZS. That is my retro gaming PC for all things Windows XP. Only real change is an SSD instead of a hard drive.

    is it just me that whenever you install windows xp, desktop or not, it always feels nostalgic and overall better than installing newer versions of windows and such?
    watching someone install it triggers some part of my brain that gives me joy, but when you're doing it yourself just feels more special fsr
    anyway, again, this is such a good series, watching the hardware get inserted to the case, and finally installing windows xp is such an enjoyable experience
    might also try this on an old desktop that was given to me from a relative, and turn it into my first ever retro machine!

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, installs of new versions of Windows feel sort of cold and clinical somehow, I guess a bit like how the looks of the OS have become. I know it's a massive dose of nostalgia talking (and to be fair the new installs of Windows tend to just work), but installing an older OS is just more special.

      @@RetroSuperhighway god dammed!!! I just wrote a half hour answer to this and accidentally closed it, so lets start again 😀😀😀
      I just want to write to you, that still this pc looks like an ideal candidate for beast W98 PC, I think for WinXP games its still slow... And i want to give some inspiration, with my few setups 🙂
      P1 200 MMX, 32 MB RAM, S3 Trio 4 MB, 8.4 GB HDD (partitioned), some kind of CDROM, ESS 1869 ISA sound card, DOS + W95
      I wish to find a reasonable priced voodoo1 or 2 card for that pc, my dream
      PII 400, 128 MB RAM, Voodoo 3 2000, 80 GB HDD, some kind of CDRW burner and DVDROM, SB Live!, W98SE
      This PC was made just because I want to test voodoo 3 card and I had some parts lying around, case even doesn't have a side panel 🤣
      P4 3.2 GHz, 2x 512 MB DDR400, ATI Radeon 9550 128 bit 256 MB (modded to 9600, bios replacement, even little bit faster, with zalman cooler), 120 GB HDD x3 (yep, 3 times, lot of ISO images), Audigy 2 (non ZS), DVD burner, W98SE with unofficial SP3), because of memory, and because I want to have 2 same RAM stick together.
      Funny fact about that pc, it goes in win98 little, really really little bit faster with 1 stick of ram (512 MB) in 3d mark 99 and 2001.
      Main reason of that pc was ability to play games in high resolution and high refresh rate, thru DVI to HDMI reduction on my modern high refresh LCD and it works flawlessly, so I can leave my 2 big crts in basement and eventually to take it to the land parties
      I5 920 or 960 not sure right now, 4 GB RAM, Radeon 7870 2 GB, 1 TB HDD, SB X-Fi (with that i had a very big problem to find a correct drivers, forced to reinstall windows maybe hundred times), DVD burner, WinXP
      Still didn't test it enough, but I tested there games like Q3, RTCW to Far Cry and Crysis, works perfectly.
      And of course main PC, where I can play some of that old XP games, but u need to patch it and commonly lan games dont work etc etc so lots of problems, in sort Ryzen 5600x, 16 GB 3600MHz, Radeon 6700 XT, 1 TB NVMe, 2x 1TB SDD, 2 TB + 4 TB HDD, no burner any more 😀
      So If i want to go to LAN patry, I can take 3 PCs. 1 LCD, and I can play games from W98 to W10 games there, uff 😀😀😀

      Those are some great systems! I agree that it would be a beast of a Windows 98 PC, but this is one of the retro PC's that I have out to use all the time. I have a few of these, each one is a copy (or as close as I can get) to the hardware that I had at the time. So for example, this is a near copy of the PC that I first ran Windows XP on, I have a K6-3 system that I had Win 98 on back in the day an so on.
      So yeah, not the fastest systems for each OS, not by a long way, but they extra nostaligic to me because they are what I had. Having said that, there is something totally cool about having a beast of a PC, way in excess of anything that OS would have had back in the day :)

      @@RetroSuperhighway OK, understand, i'm also thought to made my first pc, but its impossible to buy parts. it was regular p166 (no mmx), 32 mb ram, first matrox millenium with upgrade to 8mb, which I found later for price of chocolate, SB AWE 32 not sure if opl version or not, I was wondered all the time, why there was slots on sound card, so my first pc replaces it...
      Went to retro too late 😞at least i found exactly same case, remember father then, when I moved away from home, decided to give away that pc kindergarten with complete commodore 64 even with all boxes, and i found it many years later, my heart is crying even now 😞

      Yeah the 2nd set of RAM is strange one. Perhaps a weird incompatibilty as you say, I do have other boards I can try it on. Maybe the motherboard in the video is on it's way out or the caps are getting close to failure? Either way, more testing needed.

      @@RetroSuperhighway *Edit* oh just reached that part you mentioning the troubleshooting lol.
      Thinking it's not quite feeding enough voltage too be stable on those other ram sticks, specially if they are high density you'll probably need a slight overvolt on them or if they are higher speed ram sticks at like 333 or 400 mhz you might need it on some boards with bad caps or low voltage output on the ramslots.
      If you don't mind leaving it too dry for a day or two spraying some contact cleaner in the ram slots & a toothbrush scrubbing the ram slots & the ram sticks a bit might help also.
      As who knows what environment the board has been in over the years.
      Had an issue with voltage droop on my old AM3 board whenever i used 4 ram sticks in it as the board wasn't stable even at the standard 1333 mhz ddr3 is specified at & these were just corsair valueram 2 gb sticks which didn't have any tight timings or anything. a voltage increase too 1.55v though & it's rock solid even when overclocking a phenom II x6 1090t at 3.8 ghz.

    • @RetroSuperhighway
      @RetroSuperhighway  ปีที่แล้ว

      The ram issue is the only thing still bugging me about thie build to be honest. I'm going to try the sticks in a different board first, as it easiest to do, just try and confirm if they are good/bad and go from there. Good point about the ram slots. I cleaned the contacts on the ram sticks, bit I was a bit reluctant to start spraying the contact cleaner on the board while it is in the case and then the contact cleaner gets all over everything! After I've tested the ram on another board, I'm going to pull this board out of the case and clean the ram slots to see if it helps.
