I'm proud someone has done Windows XP on Haswell. Now we need the Ultimate Windows XP machine with i7-4790K and GTX 980 Ti (maybe even a Titan X). ;)

i have a 4820k at 4.7ghz and gtx 980ti classified running winxp with no issues at all and all devices detected , potentially i could run the 4960x or an unlocked xeon like the 1660 v2 (6core) or 1680v2 (8core). I have heard that not all titan x maxwells work under xp and it depends on the firmware revision.

Haswell is great - and with AVX2 and FMA3 support it's right up there with the latest i9-9900K in terms of instruction set support. Another neat thing about Haswell is that the L1 cache is twice as fast per clock as Sandy/Ivy Bridge (Intel had to do that, in order to keep the SIMD units properly fed when running AVX2 optimized code). However, the stupid-fast L1 also makes Haswell great for pushing really high frame rates in older XP-era games, where single-threaded CPU performance is the primary bottleneck. 500 fps in Far Cry, anyone?

True that. In Canada, the cheapest I could afford a motherboard (a refurbished/used one) that costs 50-60 Canadian dollars while most CPUs themselves ranges from the pentium ones costing 60-70 at the cheapest to the most expensive yet affordable for value ones such as the i5 and i7 for $120 or less to over $200 respectively. Thankfully I've built my haswell-based gaming PCs back when they were fairly cheap to get (prior to the release of Skylake).

If you're already versed with slipstreaming for a Windows XP iso file, you should consider integrating Dibya's alternative ram patch, which allows the kernel to actually support PAE as intended and elevates Windows xp 32bit to support up to 128gb of installed memory. At that point, the only thing XP can't install to, based on inference, is nvme ssd's.
It's my understanding that evga even made custom Windows xp drivers for their x299 Dark motherboard. Couple that with nvidia's latest driver supporting the Titan Z in the OS, it is then possible to make a ludicrously expensive, overkill machine to run Windows XP on. 😀👌

    • @arnox4554
      @arnox4554 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Some XP drivers may not like PAE though and have a risk of not working properly somehow. Usually exhibits in the form of BSODs.
Honestly, it's really damn neat to run such an overkill system on XP, but I think it would be much better idea in the end to consider using 7.

If you get interested someday, VMWare hypervisor has a very decent virtual video adapter which can accelerate using your GPU (that's not a passthrough). If you buff the ram to 6-8 gigs and launch the same XP workplace in VM (drivers for emulated hardware come on mountable iso for everything since w95) that could be an interesting Thursday bonus video. If somebody does not have a room for dedicated retro-gaming rig, that could help.
Why this exact software? Because Virtualbox emulates Geforce2-tier GPU and fresh Hyper-V is buggy on anything pre-Skylake, while VMWare Player is free and has a decent GPU emulation.

Intel's HD Graphics 4000 series isn't bad at all whatsoever. I have the 'HDG4600' powered by an i7-4700MQ on my laptop and I can play all of my older games at high-maximum quality from 2006 and back. 2007-2009 and a few modern titles do need some tweaking (shadows, quality, etc) but most of the time I just drop the resolution enough (to an extent; 1280x768 or so) and keep everything on max when possible. It all of course depends on the game. Crysis runs surprisingly well at 1280x768 with everything at high or very high except for shadows and shaders; I keep those at medium. Fully playable and enjoyable. Really awesome and it suits my general everyday use.

Passmark and similar sites like UserBenchmark and CPUBoss are dismissed because people desire game-specific benchmarks, but that's impractical when considering years worth of CPUs (or GPUs). Many of them are never benchmarked at all, like the cheap E3 Xeons that most motherboards take but don't advertise. Passmark is a valuable resource when you consider that results have a bit of play and that, as you said, when you consider singe-thread and total performance in tandem.

Hi Phil, Have you experienced any issues with the Haswell (1150 platform) regarding Win XP and games ?
I have a HTPC where I use a Broadwell i5-5675C (also socket 1150) which has the superb onboard Iris Pro 6200 iGPU. I am tempted to try this as an XP Gaming rig. Should be able to handle all XP games at max settings if I can get it to work (besides Crysis) :)

Graphics driver is going to the issue I think. You might have to use a dedicated GPU...

You may not know this and it's okay if you don't respond but I am having some trouble installing Windows 10/7 on my Dell XPS 630i, the system originally came with windows Vista but I can't get it working it stops at completing installation and it doesn't continue oddly enough windows 8.1 is the only OS I can get working, which is weird, but do you have any ideas?

I'm curious if you use a game controller for those racing games, or if you just use the keyboard? I always hated racing games until I bought an Xbox360 controller for my PC, now I feel like I really missed out on some really cool games back in the day!

E2B already includes Snappy Driver Installer Origin at \_ISO\Windows\installs\SNAPPY. You can run it and update it from there. It is used by the SDI_CHOCO unattend install process which E2B uses to do unattended installs of Windows 7/8/10 with drivers + apps + Windows updates (fully automated).

also my AsRock Z97 Anniversary board i got for free has a PCI-E 16x slot issue where it doesn't read tha GPU at all but reads tha integrated graphics just fine. should i flash tha bios? i'm scared to do it tho, oh and i have MSI Z97-S01 which i just purchased in new condition for $96 USD just in case. should i flash & update my bios on y AsRock Z97 now and see if tha PCI-E 16x slot would work, or should i wait for my MSI Z97 come in?
