Hello, yes you can. Early on near launch, some had issues relating to the USB c power. This was an effort to alleviate that through a powered dock. I've heard of a number of folks having no issues plugging in directly.
If you get a Legion Go from Microcenter they offer an upgrade from from the 512 model (only size in store) , to a 1tb $750 or to a 2tb for $800. So $50 more from the 1tb to a 2tb.
Thanks for the video but it looks like they want you to register a new account now just to use use their trial. I sort of didn't want to do this but I guess I don't have any other choice unless I look for another video. 😊
@@okestgamer yeah no paying right now either. I'm upgrading from my 512GB to 2TB rn but the cloning is taking longer than I expected. It's been like an hour now and it's only 61% done hehe. Well I did load up the 512GB almost to the max so hehe. I noticed in your video you didn't tho. Either way it's better than having to reinstall everything
@@okestgamer thx. Mine is at 80% now. I did walk away from my Go earlier but I have it set to not power off while plugged in. I thought it would be done by the time I came back but I guess not. It might've slowed down while I was gone. Either way I should be done in another 20 mins or so.
How crucial is the foil shield on the new ssd? I couldn’t cleanly get the one off the old ssd so I just put the new one in. I’ve been monitoring heat and it seems fine but I wanna get maybe another shield online but the adhesive on the old ssd was crazy sticky!
Can you please give me advice ? I have 2tb ssd in steamdeck with dual boot and want to use it in legion go. Should I format it when conecting via enclosure and than follow your guide ?
Do I really need to buy the whole $75 ifixit kit just to upgrade the ssd? This seems a little steep. Is there a cheaper option that's only have the required tools for this particular upgrade?
Yeah that will over heat and damage your screen. Don't use the cheap m.2 Microcenter was using, and you need the heat shield off your old one plus put a thermal pad on it if you plan on going bigger then 1TB. I would go Gen3 2TB, or Gen4 1TB, nothing higher.
Hasn't overheated at all under stress. There was definitely issues with the microcenter ones though. If you're worried, there is also some community made backplates that have ventilation
What SSD do you recommend i was looking at the corsair 600 mini or western digital black and not sure which is better? Doing the clone pulls everything including the bios updates so its ready to go no additional set up correct?
Sorry for delayed reply I had not seen this. I personally used the 2230 ssd with an adapter. I got the sabrent. Cloning should carry absolutely everything over
I will use dynamite to open up my Lenovo Go... Then l can easily get to all the components and all l will need to do os just reassemble it and walla l did my upgrade
do you know if the Legion comes with "Windows 11 Home" or "Windows 11 Pro" out of the box? I recently upgraded my SSD without cloning and am not sure which windows to download. Does windows 11 home vs pro even have an effect on gaming? I'm just in fear that installing the wrong windows version would collide/cause some of the legion go drivers not to function properly. Thanks for your time
Thanks for your support! Cloning is good due to maintaining the drivers and everything as it was originally setup. If you start fresh with windows you need to make sure you get all the drivers from the manufacturer. This just makes it much simpler for the upgrade process. Aside from that, all files are also kept intact
Getting that silver insulation tape of the stock SSD drive is almost impossible to get off in a condition to be able to apply to the new SSD. Is there any other form of insulation tape you can use to put on the new SSD? I tried putting the silver tape from the original SSD on the new one but the unit went bang and no longer works, I presume it shorted out the unit from not being covered correctly?
I bought a similar ssd adapter but noticed that it lifts the ssd a bit and the middle screw touches the board, i have added a piece of tape on that middle screw and used the foil that came with the original ssd to avoid any short. Do you have the same issue with your adapter?
So wait can I use my anker 737 power bank for this process? Kind of a noob but I wanna do this and the cloning is a bit confusing, are using the cloning download/website on the legion go itself with the device plugged into the power bank and the new ssd plugged in the other slot on my power bank?
You should be fine, you can also just use the wall charger and other port as the SSD. In the early launch days there was USB power issues, so I suggested a dock early in because of that.
Personally the one I used in the video is a great option. It runs cool enough that heat hasn't been an issue. You just need that little extension piece I used.
Question about cloning with new device. If the unit is brand new straight out the box and I update everything first could I just swap out the old ssd card with new 2TB one will it work with out cloning or is cloning required at all times? I watched a video on TH-cam but he had the ROG ALLY and all he had to do was updated everything first software firmware all that stuff then installed his 2TB ssd and just powered everything up all working fine he didn't have to clone the ssd card, could this also work on legion go? Another question is there a difference between the 2230 or the 2242 cos I've come across a few videos like this one as well using 2230 ssd is the 2230 better or something in performance or is it just cheaper to buy then the 2242 one
At launch a 2230 was cheaper than 2242 (not sure on prices today). You will need to clone to have your files, drivers, or really anything present on the SSD. The other video you would have watched for the ROG Ally is likely a cloud recovery option that is present in the ROG Ally bios (I did a video on that as well). That option is not present on the legion Go, so cloning is your best option.
@okestgamer yeah cool thanks for the info I ended up buying the ssd enclosure and a 2230 2Tb gen4 with also the extender and a heat sink to go with it hopefully it will keep temps down just waiting on parts to arrive now, I also bought that silver foil that goes around the ssd for a 2230 I guess it would save me time pulling off the old one and destroying it out of the 2242 which probably won't sit nice on the 2230 with the extender bracket
@@okestgamer I ended up cloning the ssd. I cloned the SSD from Lenovo to the SSD from ROG, which is 1tb. so I had everything I needed there. However, the problem was that the 1tb SSD looked like 500Gb😱 Anyway, according to the instructions, I expanded the SSD to 1tb and hooray. everything works
One thing is it could be the boot order issue. That or maybe during the cloning you may not have copied all partitions. For that menu, you likely will need to use the dpad.
In the tutorial portion of macrium reflect you want to make sure to click shrink or expand storage. I briefly go over that in the video and you can see the new drive has the main portion expanded
Early on some folks mentioned issues with the usb disconnecting so I suggested the dock because it can be powered. In the end it seems that solution wouldn’t have addressed the previous issue anyways.
Technically yes, but also no. It’s soldered to the board, so it would take a person with skills in removing and replacing components, after that they would need to modify the bios.
I am using a 2230 sabrent. The cost was lower and performance was higher than the 2242 I was seeing online. I wanted to show an option for people wanting to reuse their steam deck or other ssd upgrades they were transferring over. Just to show other options.
@@okestgamer how do you check the performance of the ssd? i need a guide if what kind of ssd should i pick for my legion go. should i go for 2240 or modified 2230?
You should be able to plug in directly, I had heard some users had some issues with external SSDs directly so I included the dock option so the ssd is powered in hopes it would help
Everything went fine on the cloning, but legion go is not showing my new ssd in bios so will not boot into os, any ideas? the ssd is a kingspec which I saw used in another vid
so if you clone you done need the key and you will have windows and legion space right ? and if i cant get the clone to work does the key come with legion space ?
Honestly that is very strange. I’ll have to look that error up. There is a chance that you may be experiencing the connecting/disconnecting bug some users have reported. It’s something Lenovo is investigating
Love this device but the AMD drivers need to get fixed ASAP. So far, Ori and the Blind Forest works but the screen is flipped, Ratchet and Clank / Starfield Crash upon start.

Yes that is good to look out for
If you get a Legion Go from Microcenter they offer an upgrade from from the 512 model (only size in store) , to a 1tb $750 or to a 2tb for $800. So $50 more from the 1tb to a 2tb.
Yup it’s a good option if you’re purchasing from micro center
Really well done video
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it!
My 1TB ended up with a seperate partition.
So I had 2 partitions after using this method.
There should be the same amount of partitions as your previous drive. It's a clone of the original drive
Thanks for the video but it looks like they want you to register a new account now just to use use their trial. I sort of didn't want to do this but I guess I don't have any other choice unless I look for another video. 😊
Oh they must have changed it. Before you sign up with an email and they send a code. Never had to pay previously
@@volcalstone yeah some folks have had it take like 12 hours. Mine was fresh so it only took like 2 min to decrypt
@@okestgamer thx. Mine is at 80% now. I did walk away from my Go earlier but I have it set to not power off while plugged in. I thought it would be done by the time I came back but I guess not. It might've slowed down while I was gone. Either way I should be done in another 20 mins or so.
thank you for this video. I also have a 2tb SSD from Sabrent for my Rog Ally. Don't I lose performance/speed through the adapter?
Nope, the adapter just bridges the gap between the end of the 2230 and the 2242 screw hole. It’s not on the connection end.
your content is great, thank you. I just subbed
Thanks man! Appreciate the support and kind words
I went step by step and it's popping up with error code 8 when l start cloning. Apparently it's bad sectors. Need help
Interesting, I've never encountered that. Maybe you could reformat it and give it amother run
Why is your adapter height wonky? The adapter should be flush with the drive or the alignment will be off.
It’s the way that adapter is designed. The ssd attaches on top
How crucial is the foil shield on the new ssd? I couldn’t cleanly get the one off the old ssd so I just put the new one in. I’ve been monitoring heat and it seems fine but I wanna get maybe another shield online but the adhesive on the old ssd was crazy sticky!
I didn't put it back on mine and it has been completely fine
Can you please give me advice ? I have 2tb ssd in steamdeck with dual boot and want to use it in legion go. Should I format it when conecting via enclosure and than follow your guide ?
You can actually just follow the guide. It will format the drive during the process
04:07 So the software makes a backup copy of the drive? If so where is it located at how do you delete the backup after your done?
The backup option wouldn't be a full copy, aside from the actual cloning I am unsure where it stores the 'backup'
Do I really need to buy the whole $75 ifixit kit just to upgrade the ssd? This seems a little steep. Is there a cheaper option that's only have the required tools for this particular upgrade?
Yeah basically any kit that has those size bits should be fine, and then a guitar pick. The kit is good if you plan more than just this repair.
Cloning should carry absolutely everything over
What's the reason for cloning instead of just doing a clean Install? Drivers not available on Lenovos website?
Its a little simpler doing the cloning, you can also do a fresh install, but a lot of people tend to miss a driver or 2
Is cloning still recommended if you upgrade the SSD of a LeGo that's straight out of the box?
Yes I would still suggest it so you get all the drivers and software carried over
Just upgraded mine.
Nice! Congrats and hopefully it went smoothly
@@okestgamer it did.
Guess my ally 2TB is going to get moved once my Legion GO arrive then :D
Yup very easy to do with the adapter
Very nice
Thank you! Hope it was helpful
I will use dynamite to open up my Lenovo Go... Then l can easily get to all the components and all l will need to do os just reassemble it and walla l did my upgrade
That’s one way to do it lol
What if don't clone the SSD ?
It's hard to reinstall the OS ?
You should be able to load windows onto it and then install all the drivers and software
do you know if the Legion comes with "Windows 11 Home" or "Windows 11 Pro" out of the box? I recently upgraded my SSD without cloning and am not sure which windows to download. Does windows 11 home vs pro even have an effect on gaming? I'm just in fear that installing the wrong windows version would collide/cause some of the legion go drivers not to function properly. Thanks for your time
It has windows 11 home. If you install home it should use the license the device itself has registered
@@okestgamer thanks so much
No problem
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
@@okestgamer I just need to get a m.2 2230 to 2242 extender
@@JaimeRodriguezzz yup, they are cheap
Looking at purchasing a 2TB SSD between an Inland or Sabrent. Which one would you recommend?
I can’t say I have experience with inland, but my Sargent has been good
@okestgamer Great video, new subscriber here. I’m new to this tech I want to upgrade my storage. What is the reason for cloning? Thank you.
Thanks for your support! Cloning is good due to maintaining the drivers and everything as it was originally setup. If you start fresh with windows you need to make sure you get all the drivers from the manufacturer. This just makes it much simpler for the upgrade process. Aside from that, all files are also kept intact
@@okestgamer Thanks for explaining.
That’s super bizarre, I actually hadn’t transferred it over to the new one, so I’m not entirely certain which type of tape they used.
Had the same problem, mine would rather ripped apart than let itself peeled..
So I ordered some on ifixit, but they are only for the 2230 ones.
What if you don't want to transfer and just want to start fresh with the 2TB drive?
You can manually download the drivers which I believe is on Lenovos site.
I bought a similar ssd adapter but noticed that it lifts the ssd a bit and the middle screw touches the board, i have added a piece of tape on that middle screw and used the foil that came with the original ssd to avoid any short. Do you have the same issue with your adapter?
Mine didn’t seem to have any issue, but it does lift the ssd a little.
@@okestgamer thank you for the quick response. Subbed
Are you still using the same SSD and how is it holding up?
I am yeah, it has been working well for me
@@okestgamer Thanks for the reply, I've just ordered the same one 👍
Is it recommended to change the ssd and use an adapter? Is the 2230 a superior series?
It’s more for those who have one from their ally or steam deck. It just gives you more options if you want to use it on another device in the future
What’s the best brand recommendation for the ssd upgrade
So I have to buy a dock to be able to connect the ssd Enclosure?
No you should be fine to upgrade without. Early on there was some USB power issues that have since been addressed.
You'll need to format the previous drive and start fresh with it
@@okestgamer I ended up cloning the ssd.
Do I need to factory reset my legion go to swap my 2TB ssd that’s installed in my steam deck that I want to put into my Lenovo legion go
Nope, you should be able to clone overtop the 2tb ssd. It will erase everything on the 2tb ssd
I get boot fail and goes to the boot menu to change the option but have no active touchscreen. Any reason why?
One thing is it could be the boot order issue. That or maybe during the cloning you may not have copied all partitions. For that menu, you likely will need to use the dpad.
must i use the dock?what if i just plug in ssd enclosure to the lego?
You can just do plugged into the legion Go. Early on there was usb power issues, so I showed with a dock to prevent that. It’s no longer an issue now
Anyone got the screw stripped? Any tips to remove the stripped screw?
You can get a screw extractor, although I haven't had luck with them. Last time that happened I had to drill out the screw
I cloned the original SSD to my 2 TB Sabrent SSD using the program but now my 2 TB SSD is 512 GB. how can I solve the problem?
In the tutorial portion of macrium reflect you want to make sure to click shrink or expand storage. I briefly go over that in the video and you can see the new drive has the main portion expanded
How come I need the dock? Can't i just plug the ssd adapter into the legion go?
Should have read the comments. Don't actually need the dock. I have my ssd and USB c adaptor coming in tomorrow!
Early on some folks mentioned issues with the usb disconnecting so I suggested the dock because it can be powered. In the end it seems that solution wouldn’t have addressed the previous issue anyways.
hy, beside adding storage, does it actually increase performances adding space with a 1tb ssd?
No performance increase
what do i do if my 1tb ssd is only reading as if i still have the 512gb sd card inserted
There is likely a partition that was made. Check the windows disk format software to see if it split your ssd into two parts
Now can you do a ram upgrade ? ;) pretty please ;)
That’s beyond my abilities…currently

so you went from the 512gb to 1 tb? the software cloned all the folders from the drive that was installed?
Yup it clones everything over and acts as if you never changed it. Very simple
@@okestgamer is 2tb the largest ssd that the legion can use?
It’s the largest 2242 I’ve seen. There could be larger but I never found it.
hey do you think its necessary to take the foil off the orignal ssd and place it on the ssd.
Some have mentioned it’s best to do so, I personally had not and it seems to be fine.
Do you need to clone the software across? Is there a way to cloud restore like the ROG Ally?
It doesn’t have the same setup as the ally for the cloud recovery. The clone will make an exact duplicate of your ssd to the new one.
Is the ran upgradable as well?
Technically yes, but also no. It’s soldered to the board, so it would take a person with skills in removing and replacing components, after that they would need to modify the bios.
Can I just plug the ssd enclosure straight to the GO and "skip" the dock?
Yes you can, I had suggested it due to some early issues folks were having with the usb c port power.
@@okestgamer ok cool, thank you.
No problem
Hi do I download the 64bit or 32bit?
You want 64bit
what kind of ssd did you use for this? if that is the 2242 why still use SSD adapter?
I am using a 2230 sabrent. The cost was lower and performance was higher than the 2242 I was seeing online. I wanted to show an option for people wanting to reuse their steam deck or other ssd upgrades they were transferring over. Just to show other options.
@@okestgamer how do you check the performance of the ssd? i need a guide if what kind of ssd should i pick for my legion go. should i go for 2240 or modified 2230?
Do you actually need the docking station? Can't you just connect the SSD enclosure directly to the Legion Go?
You should be able to plug in directly, I had heard some users had some issues with external SSDs directly so I included the dock option so the ssd is powered in hopes it would help
the easiest umpc for changing sdd
It’s pretty simple, I would say the ally is a touch simpler due to the clips being less tight but very easy nonetheless.
Hello. Do I need to clone it even if the legion go is brand new? TIA!
It’s the easiest way to setup a new drive. This way you get all your drivers and software that’s needed
Everything went fine on the cloning, but legion go is not showing my new ssd in bios so will not boot into os, any ideas? the ssd is a kingspec which I saw used in another vid
That's very odd about the bios. The SSD should have nothing to do with that. It does take a few min to boot up after the swap
@@okestgamer
It's weird because the drive shows in Windows but not the bios, I'm wondering if not all 2242 are compatible
That may be the case. Some others had an issue when the side that plugged in wasn't compatible with the slot
I wonder if the device is still under warranty after doing this?
If you keep your old ssd and put it back in when returning it should not be an issue
Is there room for a 2 sided ssd? Looking at the SABRENT 2TB Rocket
I think it would fit, but I usually steer away from double sided in a handheld due to potential heat issues.
Good question because I was looking at the same one.
@@devilstrider289 I ended up having micro center install a 2 tb ssd. A little pricey but no problems so far
